Abstract:Discrete fracture network (DFN) simulation is one of the most effective ways to study the properties of a rock mass. The three-dimensional (3-D) density is a basic parameter for constructing DFN. Since most of the fractures are buried in the rock mass, it is difficult to obtain the 3-D density directly. In contrast, the one-dimensional (1-D) or two-dimensional (2-D) density can be easily obtained from the boring hole, rock outcrops, and tunnel walls, and the relationship between the 3-D density and 1-D or 2-D density can be used to infer the 3-D density. Recently the universal elliptical disc (UED) model has been proposed, which can represent various shapes of fractures, especially slender ones. This study aims to develop the relationship between the 3-D density and the 1-D or 2-D density for the UED model. According to the stereological relationship, the formulae of the 3-D density for the UED model are proposed. A series of hypothetical 3-D elliptical DFN is constructed using Monte Carlo simulations, the algorithms for obtaining the 3-D density based on 1-D density and 2-D density are developed, and the results show that the proposed formulae of the UED model are valid. Moreover, the basic process of application of 3-D density formulae to generate a DFN based on the UED model is summarised. A hypothetical rectangular DFN is also constructed, and the circular disc, non-universal elliptical fracture model (Non-UED) and UED models are used to represent it, respectively. The error rates (ERs) of the 3-D density of the three models are compared, and the results show that the ERs of the UED model, Non-UED model, and circular disc model are around 5 %, 40 %, and 90 %, respectively.
