Abstract:The employment of fluorescence sensors provides a platform for rapid and efficient in-field detection of nitroaromatic compounds and is gaining increasing reserach ground. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterisation of three new fluorescent Al(ΙΙΙ) MOFs, structurally analogous to MIL–53, with the assigned formula {Al(OH)(bdc)1-n(L–1)n}·xsolv (bdc2- = terephthalate; L–1 = 2–((benzyl)amino)-terephthalate). L–1 is a strongly fluorescent dicarboxylic ligand with a pendant π–electron rich aromatic group suitable for electron transfer processes towards electron–deficient nitroaromatic guests. Our MOFs show strong fluorescence quenching upon exposure to vapours of nitrobenzene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, 4-nitrotoluene, 2,4-dinitrotoluene. Additionally, we prepare and study MOF-polymer composites in the form of thin films that are strongly quenched in the presence of nitrobenzene vapours.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop an efficient, portable and sensitive fluorescent sensing material for detecting nitro - aromatic hydrocarbon (NACs) vapors. Nitro - aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of highly explosive compounds, which are widely used in military, industrial and other fields, and also pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Although traditional detection methods such as gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC - MS), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), Raman spectroscopy, etc. are effective, they have disadvantages such as high cost, poor portability, and the need for professional operation. Therefore, researchers are committed to developing new methods based on fluorescent sensing technology to achieve the goal of rapid, on - site detection of nitro - aromatic hydrocarbons. In this paper, the authors synthesized and characterized three new fluorescent aluminum(III) metal - organic frameworks (MOFs). These MOFs are similar in structure to MIL - 53 and have strong fluorescent properties. By introducing the fluorescent ligand L - 1 with π - electron - rich aromatic groups, these MOFs exhibit significant fluorescence quenching phenomena when exposed to nitro - aromatic hydrocarbon vapors such as nitrobenzene, 1,3 - dinitrobenzene, 4 - nitro - toluene, 2,4 - dinitro - toluene, etc. In addition, the authors also prepared MOF - polymer composite films and tested their sensing performance in practical applications. Specifically, the paper mainly solves the following problems: 1. **Synthesis of new fluorescent MOFs**: By changing the ratio of L - 1 and terephthalic acid, three different MOFs (Al - 1, Al - 0.5, Al - 0.25) were synthesized, and their structures and properties were characterized in detail. 2. **Fluorescent sensing performance**: The fluorescence quenching behaviors of these MOFs when exposed to different nitro - aromatic hydrocarbon vapors were studied, and it was found that they have high sensitivity and selectivity to compounds such as nitrobenzene. 3. **Sensing mechanism**: The mechanism of fluorescence quenching was explored, and it was considered that it was mainly caused by the photo - induced electron transfer (PET) process. 4. **Practical application potential**: MOF - polymer composite films were prepared, and their feasibility in practical applications was verified, showing good sensing performance and reusability. In conclusion, this paper provides a promising method for the rapid, on - site detection of nitro - aromatic hydrocarbon vapors by developing new fluorescent MOFs.
