Abstract:Surface-based measurements from the EMEP and Airbase networks are used to estimate the changes in surface ozone levels during the 1995–2014 period over Europe. We find significant ozone enhancements (0.20–0.59 µg m−3 yr−1 for the annual means; P-value < 0.01 according to an F-test) over the European suburban and urban stations during 1995–2012 based on the Airbase sites. For European background ozone observed at EMEP sites, it is shown that a significantly decreasing trend in the 95th percentile ozone concentrations has occurred, especially at noon (0.9 µg m−3 yr−1; P-value < 0.01), while the 5th percentile ozone concentrations continued to increase with a trend of 0.3 µg m−3 yr−1 (P-value < 0.01) during the study period. With the help of numerical simulations performed with the global chemistry-climate model EMAC, the importance of anthropogenic emissions changes in determining these changes over background sites are investigated. The EMAC model is found to successfully capture the observed temporal variability in mean ozone concentrations, as well as the contrast in the trends of 95th and 5th percentile ozone over Europe. Sensitivity simulations and statistical analysis show that a decrease in European anthropogenic emissions had contrasting effects on surface ozone trends between the 95th and 5th percentile levels and that background ozone levels have been influenced by hemispheric transport, while climate variability generally regulated the inter-annual variations of surface ozone in Europe.

Abstract:The trends per 5th percentile interval of European surface ozone concentrations over urban, suburban and rural sites in the period 1995–2012 have been estimated based on observational data from the European Environment Agency air quality database. Consistent with previous study results, we find a rapid decline of relatively high ozone concentrations after the year 1995, especially of rural summertime ozone. However, the decreasing rate has slowed, and even reversed, of low-level ozone, especially in the urban environment for all seasons. Although the ozone air pollution problem has been declared to be effectively resolved by achieving European air quality goals, our results indicate that ozone remains to be difficult to control for a long time into the future. Global and regional models poorly reproduce the measured differences in ozone and trends in different levels and regions. Thus policy guidelines from the model should be considered with care.
Changes in European surface ozone air quality over the 21st century

Abstract:Surface ozone is a criteria air pollutant, formed by photochemical reactions involving nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Despite recent reductions in the surface ozone burden following precursor emission controls (predominantly concerning NOx) the recent European air quality report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) highlights that to date still 17 EU member states are reporting ozone concentrations that exceed the target value set for the protection of human health (120 &#181;g/m&#179;, maximum daily 8-hour average (MDA8) not to be exceeded more than 25 times per year (3-year average)). In total, 20 percent of all ozone monitoring sites showed ozone concentrations exceeding the EU target value for the protection of human health, and only 5% of monitoring sites showed ozone concentrations in compliance with the more stringent WHO target value. Here we focus on past and future changes in European surface ozone abundances in a set of simulations performed with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) chemistry-climate model CM3. First, we evaluate the general model performance for the recent past by comparing model output to observations available from the EEA Airbase database. The evaluation is performed on the basis of interpolation of the historic site level observations to a grid of 2.5&#176; x 2&#176;, matching the dimensions of the CM3 model. Our results for the recent past show that the modelled ozone abundances are biased high compared to observations. Therefore, we apply a suite of correction techniques (quantile mapping, delta function) to obtain modelled ozone fields in agreement with observations. Emanating from remediated model data the correction functions derived are applied to transient (2006-2100) simulations following selected Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). Using these bias-corrected future simulations we illustrate next potential changes in future European surface ozone air pollution over the course of the 21st century.

Abstract:Air pollution and heat events present two major health risks, both already independently posing a significant threat to human health and life. High levels of ground-level ozone (O3) and air temperature often coincide due to the underlying physical relationships between both variables. The most severe health outcome is in general associated with the co-occurrence of both hazards (e.g. Hertig et al. 2020), since concurrent elevated levels of temperature and ozone concentrations represent a twofold exposure and can lead to a risk beyond the sum of the individual effects. Consequently, in the current contribution, a compound approach considering both hazards simultaneously as so-called ozone-temperature (o-t-)events is chosen by jointly analyzing elevated ground-level ozone concentrations and air temperature levels in Europe.Previous studies already point to the fact that the relationship of underlying synoptic and meteorological drivers with one or both of these health stressors as well as the correlation between both variables vary with the location of sites and seasons (e.g. Otero et al. 2016; Jahn, Hertig 2020). Therefore, a hierarchical clustering analysis is applied to objectively divide the study domain in regions of homogeneous, similar ground-level ozone and temperature characteristics (o-t-regions). Statistical models to assess the synoptic and large-scale meteorological mechanisms which represent main drivers of concurrent o-t-events are developed for each identified o-t-region.Compound elevated ozone concentration and air temperature events are expected to become more frequent due to climate change in many parts of Europe (e.g. Jahn, Hertig 2020; Hertig 2020). Ozone Trends over the United States at Different Times of Day

Abstract:In the United States, the decline of summertime daytime peak ozone in the last 20 years has been clearly connected to reductions in anthropogenic emissions. However, questions remain about how and through what mechanisms ozone at other times of day have changed over recent decades. Here we analyze the interannual variability and trends of ozone at different hours of day, using observations from about 1000 US sites during 1990–2014. We find a clear diurnal cycle both in the magnitude of ozone trends and in the relative importance of climate variability versus anthropogenic emissions to ozone changes. Interannual climate variability has mainly been associated with the detrended fluctuation in the US annual daytime ozone over 1990–2014, with a much smaller effect on the nighttime ozone. Reductions in anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen oxides have led to substantial growth in the US annual average nighttime ozone due to reduced ozone titration, while the summertime daytime ozone has declined. Environmental policymaking might consider further improvements to reduce ozone levels at night and other non-peak hours.
Rapid Assimilations of O 3 Observations – Part 2: Tropospheric O 3 Changes in 1 the United States and Europe in 2005-2020 2

Abstract:13 Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) concentrations have declined dramatically over the 14 United States (US) and Europe in recent decades. Here we investigate the changes in surface 15 and free tropospheric O 3 associated with NO 2 changes over the US and Europe in 2005-2020 16 by assimilating the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), and US Air Quality System (AQS) 17 and European AirBase network O 3 observations. The assimilated O 3 concentrations 18 demonstrate good agreement with O 3 observations: surface O 3 concentrations are 41.4, 39.5 19 and 39.5 ppb (US) and 35.3, 32.0 and 31.6 ppb (Europe); and tropospheric O 3 columns are 35.5, 20 37.0 and 36.8 DU (US) and 32.8, 35.3 and 36.4 DU (Europe) in the simulations, assimilations 21 and observations, respectively. We find overestimated summertime surface O 3 concentrations 22 over the US and Europe, which resulted in a surface O 3 maximum in July-August in simulations 23 in contrast to April in observations. Furthermore, our analysis exhibits limited changes in 24 surface O 3 concentrations, i.e., decreased by -6% over the US and increased by 1.5% over 25 Europe in 2005-2020. The surface observation-based assimilations suggest insignificant 26 changes in tropospheric O 3 columns: -3.0% (US) and 1.5% (Europe) in 2005-2020. Future Local Ground‐level Ozone in the European area from Statistical Downscaling Projections Considering Climate and Emission Changes

Abstract:Ground‐level ozone is a major air pollutant harmful for human health. In the scope of climate change, it is essential to provide high‐quality local‐scale assessments of the anticipated changes for public health and policy interventions. Assessments and projections of ground‐level ozone usually rely on numerical modeling, but statistical approaches are also available. The present study enhances the validity of statistical downscaling by taking climate change as well as air pollution changes into account. Besides considering meteorological predictors such as air temperature, short‐wave radiation, humidity, and wind, ozone trends from changes of precursor emissions were included in the statistical models. Meteorological and ozone predictor information extracted from reanalysis data for the observational period and output of seven Earth System Models (ESMs) for the projection periods were used, with three of them having interactive chemical modeling, while the other four used prescribed ozone changes. Ground‐level ozone, more precisely daily maximum 8‐hr running means (MDA8) as well as daily maximum 1‐hr values (MDA1), at 798 measurement stations across the European area in the "ozone season" from April to September were assessed. Results depended strongly on whether only meteorological information or additional information about emission changes were considered. As a general picture under the consideration of climate and emission changes, decreasing ground‐level ozone concentrations were projected under the moderate SSP2‐4.5 scenario, while for the more pessimistic scenario SSP3‐7.0 increasing ozone concentrations over Europe, especially at the end of the 21st century, were assessed.

Investigating Zonal Asymmetries in Stratospheric Ozone Trends From Satellite Limb Observations and a Chemical Transport Model

Abstract:Abstract This study investigates the origin of a zonal asymmetry in stratospheric ozone trends at northern high latitudes, identified in satellite limb observations over the past two decades. We use a merged data set consisting of ozone profiles retrieved at the University of Bremen from SCIAMACHY and OMPS‐LP measurements to derive ozone trends. We also use TOMCAT chemical transport model (CTM) simulations, forced by ERA5 reanalyses, to investigate the factors that drive the asymmetry observed in the long‐term changes. By studying seasonally and longitudinally resolved observation‐based ozone trends, we find, especially during spring, a well‐pronounced asymmetry at polar latitudes with values up to +6 % per decade over Greenland and −5 % per decade over western Russia. The control CTM simulation agrees well with these observed trends, whereas sensitivity simulations indicate that chemical mechanisms involved in the production and removal of ozone, or their changes, are unlikely to explain the observed behavior. The decomposition of TOMCAT ozone time series and ERA5 geopotential height into the first two wavenumber components shows a clear correlation between the two variables in the middle stratosphere and demonstrates a weakening and a shift in the wavenumber‐1 planetary wave activity over the past two decades. Finally, the analysis of the polar vortex position and strength points to a decadal oscillation with a reversal pattern at the beginning of the century. The same is found in the ozone trend asymmetry. This further stresses the link between changes in the polar vortex position and the identified ozone trend pattern.

Abstract:Tropospheric ozone ( O 3 ) formation depends on the relative abundance of precursor species, nitrogen oxides ( NO x ), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Advancements in satellite retrievals of formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide ( NO 2 ) vertical column densities (VCDs), and the corresponding HCHO/NO2 ratios (FNRs), provide the opportunity to diagnose the spatiotemporal evolution of O 3 production sensitivity regimes. This study investigates trends of Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI)-derived summertime VCD HCHO, NO 2 , and FNRs in the Northern Hemisphere from 2005 to 2021. FNR trends were analyzed for polluted regions, specifically for 46 highly populated cities, over the entire 17-year period and in 2020 when global anthropogenic emissions were reduced due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. It was determined that OMI-derived FNRs have increased on average by ∼ 65 % across cities in the Northern Hemisphere. Increasing OMI-derived FNRs indicates a general transition from radical-limited to NO x -limited regimes. The increasing trend is driven by reduced NO 2 concentrations because of emission-control strategies of NO x . OMI FNR trends were compared to ground-based in situ measurements in US cities, and it was determined that they can capture the trends in increasing FNRs ( R =0.91 ) and decreasing NO 2 ( R =0.98 ) occurring at the surface. OMI FNRs in urban areas were higher ( ∼ 20 %) in 2020 for most cities studied here compared to 2019 and 2021. In addition to studying the longest period of OMI FNRs across the Northern Hemisphere to date, the capabilities and challenges of using satellite VCD FNRs to study surface-level O 3 production sensitivity regimes are discussed.

Analysis of the spatiotemporal changes in global tropospheric ozone concentrations from 1980 to 2020

Abstract:Tropospheric ozone affects human health, ecosystems, and climate change. Previous studies on Tropospheric Column Ozone (TCO) have primarily concentrated on specific regions or global geographic divisions. This has led to insufficient exploration of the spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors of TCO in global and rational subregions. In this study, TCO is calculated using the Modern Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis data and corrected using satellite data. Cluster analysis is conducted to explore the temporal characteristics of TCO variations in different regions. The results show that the global TCO is basically distributed latitudinally, with higher TCO in the northern hemisphere, which is related to atmospheric circulation, radiation, stratospheric transport, and the distribution of ozone precursors. Between 1980 and 2020, the global average annual TCO showed an increasing trend at 0.09 DU yr-1 due to rising anthropogenic emissions of ozone precursors (NOx at 589547.86 t yr-1 and NMVOC at 1070818.24 t yr-1), increasing tropopause height (-0.10 hPa yr-1), and the enhanced ozone flux at the tropopause (0.22 ppbv m s-2 yr-1). Cluster analysis reveals different trends in TCO changes across regions. The ocean south of 60°S and parts of West Antarctica (Region 2), the region from 30°N to 60°N and the western oceanic region of 30°S (Region 3), and the region from the equator to 60°S and the region north of 60°N (Region 5) exhibit increasing trends (with rates of 0.08 DU yr-1, 0.07 DU yr-1, and 0.11 DU yr-1, respectively), linked to the enhanced ozone flux at the tropopause, the rising tropopause height and increasing ozone p precursors. Conversely, the decreasing TCO trends in the equatorial Pacific (Region 1) and East Antarctica (Region 4) (with rates of -0.01 DU yr-1 and -0.02 DU yr-1) may be related to increased cloudiness and weakened photochemical reactions.
Trend analysis of surface ozone at suburban Guangzhou, China

Abstract:The long-term variations of ozone are the combined results of climate change and air quality management. As Guangzhou is under the influence of both subtropical monsoon climate and rapid economic development, the ozone trend in recent years is uncertain. This paper presents the trend analysis of maximum daily average 8 h (MDA8) ozone and daily meteorological observations in Guangzhou from 2008 to 2018, using the Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter method. The observations were conducted at two sites in suburban Guangzhou, thus the datasets were processed in two periods. The first period (P1) is from 2008 to 2013, and the second period (P2) is from 2014 to 2018. Results show that the KZ filter method separates the short-term, seasonal, and long-term components efficiently, leaving a covariance term of 7.3% (5.4%) for P1 (P2). Through linear regression of long-term components, the trends were inferred as -0.06 ± 0.04 ppb year-1 (R2 = 0.00, p < 0.05) for P1, and 0.51 ± 0.08 ppb year-1 (R2 = 0.11, p < 0.05) for P2. It is found that the solar radiation has the strongest impact on ozone. With inclusion of temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed, these four meteorological factors held 71% (76%) variability in baseline ozone (sum of seasonal and long-term ozone) for P1 (P2). After applying the KZ filter method, the results reveal that the variance contribution of emission to long-term ozone variation is larger than that of meteorology in P1, while smaller in P2. Furthermore, 59% of the emission-induced ozone change in P2 could be explained by nitrogen dioxide variation, and their inverse correlation suggests that Guangzhou is mainly under volatile organic compounds-limited regime, despite continuous nitrogen oxides reduction.
Spatial and temporal variation of total ozone over east Asia and Europe: An inter-comparison

Abstract:Using the daily data of TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) from 1979 to 1994, the spatial and temporal variations of total ozone over East Asia (69.375 degreesE similar to 139.375 degreesE; 14.5 degreesN similar to 54.5 degreesN) and the west part of Europe (20.625 degreesW similar to 40.625 degreesE; 35.5 degreesN similar to 70.5 degreesN) were analyzed to make an intercomparison. Results showed that the mean ozone concentrations over the two regions similarly evolved in one year, with sinusoid curves which reached a maximum in spring (March for East Asia, April for Europe), and a minimum in autumn (October and November for East Asia and Europe respectively). With a higher annual mean concentration over Europe, the amplitude of seasonal variation was also larger in comparison to those of East Asia. Annual mean ozone concentrations showed obviously decreasing trends during the period from 1979 to 1994, over both regions, but the net reduction over Europe was approximately twice the amount as over East Asia. Spatial distribution pattern of total ozone showed clear differences over the two regions, as well as their seasonal evolution.
Deciphering multi-temporal scale dynamics in the concentration, sources and processes of near surface ozone over different climatic regions of India

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the factors influencing seasonal and long-term (2003–2021) changes in the near surface ozone (850 hpa) concentrations over different climatic sub-regions of India. Detailed comparison of daily (2019–2021) near surface ozone values of ERA-5 and CAAQMS (Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations) ground-based measurements revealed that ERA-5 is temporally in phase with CAAQMS measurements falling indifferent climatic sub-regions of India. ERA-5 near surface ozone shows statistically significant long-term (2003–2021) positive trends [2–4 percent per decade (ppd)] over most of the climatic sub-regions, over Indo-Gangetic Planes (IGPs), Southern and Central India trends are particularly strong. Trends were also estimated for each season separately, which were largely positive (2–6 ppd) over Central and Southern India in the Autumn and Winter seasons. Extensive climatological analysis reveals that the reversal of winds in the Indian monsoonal system plays a vital role in such trend patterns across the Indian subcontinent. South-westerly winds from June through September presumably bring ozone deficit air of marine origin, thus causing a dilution effect while the North-easterly winds during late Autumn and early Winters plausibly bring ozone-rich air from the stratospheric-tropospheric efflux dominated Himalayan region. It allows near surface ozone enhancement over Central and Southern India. Seasonal Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that precursor gases (CH 4 and NO 2 ) and climatic variables especially specific humidity (SH) are the primary drivers of near surface ozone variability in the Winter season, while in Spring, climatic variables like boundary layer height (BLH), temperature (T) and SH have a significant role. Principal component regression (PCR) reveals a long-term increase in near surface ozone levels mostly dominated by precursor concentration over IGPs and Southern sub-regions. Whereas, BLH, T and SH significantly explain near surface ozone trends over North-eastern and Coastal India.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although short-term ozone (<math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math>) exposure has been associated with a series of adverse health outcomes, research on the health effects of chronic <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> exposure is still limited, especially in developing countries because of the lack of long-term exposure estimates.OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of monthly mean daily maximum 8-h average <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations in China from 2005 to 2019 at a 0.05° spatial resolution.METHODS: We developed a machine learning model with a satellite-derived boundary-layer <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> column, <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> precursors, meteorological conditions, land-use information, and proxies of anthropogenic emissions as predictors.RESULTS: The random, spatial, and temporal cross-validation <math><mrow><msup><mrow><mi>R</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math> of our model were 0.87, 0.86, and 0.76, respectively. Model-predicted spatial distribution of ground-level <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations showed significant differences across seasons. The highest summer peak of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> occurred in the North China Plain, whereas southern regions were the most polluted in winter. Most large urban centers showed elevated <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> levels, but their surrounding suburban areas may have even higher <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations owing to nitrogen oxides titration. The annual trend of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations fluctuated over 2005-2013, but a significant nationwide increase was observed afterward.DISCUSSION: The present model had enhanced performance in predicting ground-level <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations in China. This national data set of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> concentrations would facilitate epidemiological studies to investigate the long-term health effect of <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> in China. Our results also highlight the importance of controlling <math><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>O</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>3</mn></mrow></msub></mrow></math> in China's next round of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP9406.

Ozone Trends Across The United States Over A Period Of Decreasing Nox And Voc Emissions

Abstract:In this work, we evaluate ambient ozone trends at urban, suburban, and rural monitoring sites across the United States over a period of decreasing NOx and VOC emissions (1998-2013). We find that decreasing ozone trends generally occur in the summer, in less urbanized areas, and at the upper end of the ozone distribution. Conversely, increasing ozone trends generally occur in the winter, in more urbanized areas, and at the lower end of the ozone distribution. The 95(th) percentile ozone concentrations decreased at urban, suburban, and rural monitors by 1-2 ppb/yr in the summer and 0.5-1 ppb/yr in the winter. In the summer, there are both increasing and decreasing trends in fifth percentile ozone concentrations of less than 0.5 ppb/yr at urban and suburban monitors, while fifth percentile ozone concentrations at rural monitors decreased by up to 1 ppb/yr. In the winter, fifth percentile ozone concentrations generally increased by 0.1-1 ppb/yr. These results demonstrate the large scale success of U.S. control strategies targeted at decreasing peak ozone concentrations. In addition, they indicate that as anthropogenic NOx emissions have decreased, the ozone distribution has been compressed, leading to less spatial and temporal variability.

Abstract:Understanding the local-scale spatial and temporal variability of ozone formation is crucial for effective mitigation. We combine tropospheric vertical column densities (VCDTrop) of formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), referred to as HCHO-VCDTrop and NO2-VCDTrop, retrieved from airborne remote sensing and the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) with ground-based measurements to investigate changes in ozone precursors and the inferred chemical production regime on high-ozone days in May-August 2018 over two Northeast urban domains. Over New York City (NYC) and Baltimore/Washington D.C. (BAL/DC), HCHO-VCDTrop increases across the domain, but higher NO2-VCDTrop occurs mainly in urban centers on ozone exceedance days (when maximum daily 8 h average (MDA8) ozone exceeds 70 ppb at any monitor in the region). The ratio of HCHO-VCDTrop to NO2-VCDTrop, proposed as an indicator of the sensitivity of local surface ozone production rates to its precursors, generally increases on ozone exceedance days, implying a transition toward a more NOx-sensitive ozone production regime that should lead to higher efficacy of NOx controls on the highest ozone days in NYC and BAL/DC. Warmer temperatures and enhanced influence from emissions in the local boundary layer on the high-ozone days are accompanied by slower wind speeds in BAL/DC but stronger, southwesterly winds in NYC.

Abstract:Surface ozone air pollution is unequally distributed in space and varies over urban and surrounding nonurban areas. Traditionally, urban ozone levels tend to be lower than their nonurban counterparts, resulting from discrepancies in emissions and nonlinearity in photochemistry. However, how the differences in urban vs nonurban ozone evolve over the past decades is uncertain. Here, we construct 6361 pairs of urban and nonurban ozone measurement sites based on available surface monitoring networks to analyze the long-term changes of their ozone differences. We show that urban vs nonurban ozone differences have narrowed substantially in North America, Europe, South Korea, and Japan over the summers of 1990–2020. The hemispheric mean urban vs nonurban ozone differences have decreased by 90% from −5.0 ppbv in the 1990s to −0.5 ppbv in the 2010s. We estimate that the anthropogenic emission reduction of nitrogen oxides is the dominant driver of the narrowing trends. It has suppressed the urban ozone titration and led to closer ozone formation regimes over urban and nonurban areas.

Abstract:Ozone (O 3 ) is produced by photochemical reactions of NO X and VOCs in the troposphere under sunlight. The column densities of formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), derived from satellite data, serve as indicators of VOCs and NO X emissions in the troposphere. Through analyzing the unique characteristics of the threshold range for the HCHO/NO 2 ratio (FNR), the mechanisms of O 3 formation across different regions over a prolonged period can be identified. In this study, we utilized the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) technique to characterize O 3 patterns during the warm season (April to October) spanning 2013–2019. This period is divided into three stages: 2013–2014, 2015–2016, and 2017–2019. Using the third-order fitting model, we assessed the FNR values across different regions in China: BTH (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei), YRD (Yangtze River Delta), GD (Guangdong), and CY (Chuan-Yu). The FNR value ranges for these regions are as follows: ([1.2,2.0], [1.3,2.1], [2.4,3.2], [1.4,2.2]) during 2013–2014, ([1.1,1.9], [1.2,2.0], [2.0,2.8], [1.2,2.0]) during 2015–2016, and ([1.0,1.8], [1.0,1.8], [1.7,2.5], [1.1,1.9]) during 2017–2019, respectively. Ultimately, our research indicates a shift in certain regions from a VOC-limited regime towards a transitional regime. This shift correlates with a significant decline in anthropogenic NO X emissions, attributed to the stringent emission control strategies extensively implemented between 2013 and 2019. The spatial expansion of the transitional regime aligns with increasing O 3 concentrations, simultaneously offering guidance for the development of effective emission reduction strategies.
