Abstract:The filamentous microalga Oedocladium carolinianum is a promising strain for co-production of lipid and astaxanthin with advance of easy harvesting, high growth rate and anti-grazers. However, low nitrogen concentration (NC) limited its growth, while high NC abated lipid and astaxanthin accumulation. Here, the responses of O. carolinianum under varied NCs (0 N, 1/6 N, 1/2 N and 1 N-mBBM) with three light spectra of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were investigated. The results showed that red light (RL) could increase lipid and astaxanthin accumulation under higher NCs and improve biomass production under lower NC when compared with other lights, which could partially reduce the adverse effects of NC on this alga. Moreover, RL could promote the biomass, lipid and astaxanthin productivity dramatically under 1/2 N, reaching up to 290.76, 124.09 and 2.89 mg L-1 d-1, respectively. These results suggested that RL could balance the negative effects of NC and enhance biomass and metabolites accumulation in O. carolinianum, which could provide feasible strategies for highly efficient production of lipid and other value-added compounds in related species/strains.
