Abstract:The structural color of photonic crystals has garnered considerable attention in the domains of coded information security and anticounterfeiting technology mechanisms. However, most alterations induced by structural color hinge on dynamic regulation triggered by external stimuli, limiting their utility in static settings. Herein, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) photonic films with a bilayer inverse opal structure are engineered to enable the display and concealment of coded messages contingent on the observer's viewing angle. The inherent attributes of PVDF polymer confer upon photonic films high stability and flexibility, as confirmed through curling, friction, and tensile tests. Notably, the upper inverse opal structure layer serves as the background, while the bottom inverse opal structure layer functions as the pattern in these PVDF bilayer photonic films. Owing to angle dependence of the pattern layer and the shielding effect of the background layer, the pattern remains concealed at viewing angles above 45° and becomes visible at angles below 30°. These photonic films have been adapted for use in touch-tone numeric keypad protective patches by optimizing particle size and thickness parameters. According to these findings, the coded information security systems based on the angle dependence in highly ordered photonic crystal structures offer substantial promise for applications in static environments.
