Here, we propose a method of chip-based 3D nanoscopy through a tunable spatial-frequency-shift effect capable of covering the full extent of the spatial-frequency component within a wide passband. The missing of the spatial spectrum can be effectively solved by developing a spatial-frequency-shift active tuning approach through wave vector manipulation and operation of optical modes propagating along multiple azimuthal directions on a waveguide chip. Besides, the method includes a chip-based sectioning capability, which is enabled by the saturated absorption of fluorophores.

Abstract:Spatial frequency shift (SFS) microscopy with evanescent wave illumination shows intriguing advantages, including large field of view (FOV), high speed, and good modularity. However, a missing band in the spatial frequency domain hampers the SFS superresolution microscopy from achieving resolution better than 3 folds of the Abbe diffraction limit. Here, we propose a novel tunable large-SFS microscopy, making the resolution improvement of a linear system no longer restricted by the detection numerical aperture (NA). The complete wide-range detection in the spatial frequency domain is realized by tuning the illumination spatial frequency actively and broadly through an angle modulation between the azimuthal propagating directions of two evanescent waves. The vertical spatial frequency is tuned via a sectional saturation effect, and the reconstructed depth information can be added to the lateral superresolution mask for 3D imaging. A lateral resolution of λ /9, and a vertical localization precision of ∼ λ /200 (detection objective NA = 0.9) are realized with a gallium phosphide (GaP) waveguide. Its unlimited resolution enhancing capability is demonstrated by introducing a designed metamaterial chip with an unusual large refractive index. Besides the great resolution enhancement, this method shows better anti-noise capability than classical structured illumination microscopy without SFS tunability. This method is chip-compatible and can potentially provide a mass-producible illumination chip module achieving the fast, large-FOV, and deep-subwavelength 3D nanoscopy.

Abstract:In this Letter, we show how to obtain high-contrast widefield evanescent wave illuminated subdiffraction imaging through controlling nanoscale light-matter interaction. The light coupling, propagation, and far-field imaging processes show strong polarization selectivity and film quality dependence, which is used to improve the imagecontrast- to-noise ratio (CNR) and to enlarge the field of view (FOV). A Compact Upconversion Single-Photon Imager for Full-Range and Accurate 3-D Imaging

Abstract:The rapid development of single-photon detection technology offers the possibility for an imaging system to go beyond traditional limits. Recently, single-photon imagers based on the upconversion technique have achieved unprecedentedly high resolution and noise tolerance in 3-D imaging. Nevertheless, the limited imaging range, complicated optical path, and long data acquisition time impose remaining challenges to practical applications. In this work, we build an upconversion single-photon imager for full-range and accurate 3-D imaging. A compact all-fiber design allows our system to work robustly in an open environment. Compared to the previous imagers, the imaging speed is increased by three orders of magnitude due to the high upconversion efficiency and photon-efficient algorithm. With the application of a high-repetition laser and a nanosecond optical delay line (ODL), we achieve full-range imaging under the upconversion scheme against high solar background noise. For close-up scenes, our imager achieves ultrahigh axial resolution up to 20 mu m, which is not affected by the time jitter or pileup effect of the single-photon detector. Our proposal can stimulate practical applications in sophisticated scenarios.

Abstract:Abstract Mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging has become an indispensable tool to spatially resolve chemical information in a wide variety of samples. However, acquiring three-dimensional data cubes is typically time-consuming due to the limited speed of raster scanning or wavelength tuning, which impedes real-time visualization with high spatial definition across broad spectral bands. Here, we devise and implement a high-speed, wide-field mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging system relying on broadband parametric upconversion of high-brightness supercontinuum illumination at the Fourier plane. The upconverted replica is spectrally decomposed by a rapid acousto-optic tunable filter, which records high-definition monochromatic images at a frame rate of 10 kHz based on a megapixel silicon camera. Consequently, the hyperspectral imager allows us to acquire 100 spectral bands over 2600-4085 cm −1 in 10 ms, corresponding to a refreshing rate of 100 Hz. Moreover, the angular dependence of phase matching in the image upconversion is leveraged to realize snapshot operation with spatial multiplexing for multiple spectral channels, which may further boost the spectral imaging rate. The high acquisition rate, wide-field operation, and broadband spectral coverage could open new possibilities for high-throughput characterization of transient processes in material and life sciences.

Abstract:Objective The mid-infrared band(2.5-25 pm)has important applications in the field of spectroscopy and imaging.Spectral migration technique up-converts mid-infrared signal light to visible/near-infrared light through a non-linear frequency process,which is then detected using high-performance detectors based on wide-band gap materials such as silicon.Compared to schemes directly using traditional semiconductor detectors,this technique has the advantages of fast response and room temperature operation.Bulk crystals have large aperture to realize array detection.In particular,chirped polarized crystals have obvious advantages in imaging acceptance bandwidth and field of view due to their large phase-matching bandwidth.Previous up-conversion imaging theory,however,didn't consider the nonlinear process of signal light in the crystal to affect the propagation.Therefore,there is some deviation between the theoretical analysis and the up-conversion imaging results under the weak signal light condition.Based on the basic imaging principle,a simple physical model of the up-conversion imaging process is presented by solving the coupled wave equation using finite difference method and considering the effect of nonlinear process on the optical propagation.On this basis,a theoretical derivation for up-conversion imaging under coherent/incoherent radiation illumination conditions based on chirped polarized crystals is provided. Methods A mid-infrared up-conversion detection imaging system based on a chirped polarized crystal is built(Fig.3).The target object is illuminated by the thermal radiation of an electric soldering iron,then the visible light in the signal is filtered out by a band pass filter(BP1).A strong 1 080 nm pump light is directed into the crystal through a dichroic mirror(DM)along with the signal beam.Through a 4fsystem,the up-conversion results of the target are imaged on the EMC CD.A chirped polarized lithium niobate(CPLN)crystal with a period interval of 0.01 μm and a period range of 21.6-23.4 μm is used in the experiment.The length of the crystals is 40 mm and the cross section size is 2 mm×3 mm.The temperature of CPLN crystal is controlled by a home-made temperature controller,whose fluctuation is±0.002 ℃. Results and Discussions By using a mature spectrometer to measure the spectrum after up-conversion and combining with the law of conservation of energy,the accepted spectrum of the up-conversion process in the corresponding mid-infrared band can be obtained(Fig.4).The corresponding mid-infrared acceptance range is 2 915-3 512 nm,and its full-width of half-max(FWHM)is 597 nm.Due to the low transmittance of the DM at wavelengths greater than 3 400 nm,the actual conversion bandwidth is larger than the direct measurement results,which is in agreement with the numerical calculation results(Fig.2).In contrast,the wavelength acceptance bandwidth of single-period polarized crystals is only on the order of nanometers.In the up-conversion imaging results(Fig.5),the largest one-dimensional size of the target is 3.62 cm,corresponding to 125 mm propagation distance,thus the full angle of the field of view is 16.59°,which is slightly smaller than the numerical calculation result in Fig.2.Under the condition of weak signal light,the background of pattern directly imaged by mid-infrared light through the mercury cadmium telluride thermal imager is full of white noise,making it difficult to identify the target contour information,while the pattern obtained by the up-conversion method with the same power of light has clean background and high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),which also can realize high SNR of the single photon level imaging(Fig.6-7).In addition,applications of up-conversion imaging under coherent/incoherent radiation illumination conditions are reported.The optical edge enhancement imaging is realized for the objects illuminated by mid-infrared coherent light(Fig.8).Real-time video frame rate imaging of incoherent illuminated objects is realized,and its temperature characteristics can be analyzed(Fig.9). Conclusions In the experiment,chirped polarized crystal is used to realize the up-conversion imaging detection of the mid-infrared receiving bandwidth of 597 nm and the field angle of view of 16.59°.By comparing with traditional mercury cadmium telluride mid-infrared detector,the up-conversion imaging technique has obvious advantages in improving the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity of imaging,and the low-light imaging of mid-infrared is realized by using the photon flux of 1.05×105 Hz.The paper further shows the application of the up-conversion imaging system to the objects illuminated by correlation light and incoherent light.This work has conducted a comprehensive study on the up-conversion based infrared imaging system,which will provide a basis for the design of various application scenarios and improve the system design.
Single-Photon Infrared Imaging With a Silicon Camera Based on Long-Wavelength-Pumping Two-Photon Absorption

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated an ultra-sensitive imaging system for telecom photons based on the non-degenerate two-photon absorption in a silicon-based electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD). The proposed long-wavelength-pumping scheme with mid-infrared pulsed excitation could not only effectively increase the two-photon absorption coefficient, but also significantly suppress the background noise caused by the harmonic absorption of the strong pumping field. In comparison to the photoelectric response via the degenerate two-photon absorption, the implemented configuration could offer over 30-folded enhancement of the photon-counting rate in the infrared imaging. The resulting detection sensitivity up to 1 photon/pixel/pulse was unprecedentedly approached, thus facilitating the single-photon operation. The elimination of the stringent phase matching as typically required in the optical parametric conversion has led to a high spatial resolution of 13$\mu$m. Moreover, the on-chip nonlinearity of the optical imager would enable a broadband spectral window and an enlarged field of view. In combination with the 5-ps temporal resolution due to the coincident optical gating, the presented imaging system would find various promising applications, such as low-light fluorescence lifetime microscopy and photon counting time-of-flight 3D imaging.

Real-time Ultra-Sensitive Anisotropic Edge Enhanced Imaging Based on Frequency Upconversion

Abstract:Edge-enhanced imaging is invaluable in feature extraction, fingerprinting analysis, and biomedicine due to its ability to accentuate peripheries. Nevertheless, in systems employing vortex phase plates, the modulation of the phase mask is suppressed, resulting in the inability to characterize the modulation function during image reconstruction. To address this need, we propose a nonlinear reconstruction method that incorporates a superimposed vortex phase filter (SVPF) designed to modulate the spectrum of the target. In this paper real-time ultra-sensitive edge enhanced imaging in the short-wavelength-infrared (SWIR) region is demonstrated using nonlinear frequency upconversion. The SWIR signal at 1550 nm is spectrally converted to 864 nm for detection by a quantitative CMOS (qCMOS) camera. Anisotropic edge enhancement with controlled amplitude can be achieved by the SVPF. The imaging sensitivity at the single-photon level is realized by increasing the conversion efficiency and reducing the background noise of the upconversion system. By rapidly switching a series of specific phase patterns with a spatial light modulator, we also present the ability of the scheme to detect outlines and gradual edges in real time. The implemented SWIR edge-enhanced imaging system is expected to be directly used in non-destructive defect inspection and infrared monitoring of low-light objects.

Abstract:Millimeter-wave imaging has the unique potential to penetrate through poor weather and atmospheric conditions and create a high-resolution image. In pursuit of this goal, we have implemented a far-field imaging system that is based on optical upconversion techniques. Our imaging system is passive, in which all native blackbody radiation that is emitted from the object being scanned is detected by a Cassegrain antenna on a rotating gimbal mount. The signal received by the Cassegrain is passed to an optical modulator which transfers the radiation onto sidebands of a near-infrared optical carrier frequency. The signal is then passed to a low-frequency photodetector that converts remaining sideband energy to a photocurrent. Even though optical upconversion can produce loss, our system demonstrates low noise equivalent powers (NEP) due to the low-noise of the photodetection process. Herein, we present our experimental results and images obtained by using the far-field scanning system, which was assembled with commercially available components. In addition, we detail efforts to increase the resolution of the image and to compact the imaging system as a whole.

Abstract:Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.

Abstract:Converting the medium infrared field to the visible band is an effective image detection method. We propose a comprehensive theory of image up-conversion under continuous optical pumping, and discuss the relationship between the experimental parameters and imaging field of view, resolution, quantum efficiency, and conversion bandwidth. Theoretical predictions of upconversion imaging results are given based on numerical simulations, which show good agreement with experimental results. In particular, coherent and incoherent light illumination are studied separately and the advantages and disadvantages of their imaging performance are compared and analysed. This work provides a study of the upconversion image detection performance of the system, which is of great value in guiding the design of the detection system and bringing it to practical applications.

Abstract:Ghost imaging in the time domain allows for reconstructing fast temporal objects using a slow photodetector. The technique involves correlating random or pre-programmed probing temporal intensity patterns with the integrated signal measured after modulation by the temporal object. However, the implementation of temporal ghost imaging necessitates ultrafast detectors or modulators for measuring or pre-programming the probing intensity patterns, which are not available in all spectral regions especially in the mid-infrared range. Here, we demonstrate a frequency downconversion temporal ghost imaging scheme that enables to extend the operation regime to arbitrary wavelengths regions where fast modulators and detectors are not available. The approach modulates a signal with temporal intensity patterns in the near-infrared and transfers the patterns to an idler via difference-frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal at a wavelength where the temporal object can be retrieved. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate computational temporal ghost imaging in the mid-infrared with operating wavelength that can be tuned from 3.2 to 4.3 μm. The scheme is flexible and can be extended to other regimes. Our results introduce new possibilities for scan-free pump-probe imaging and the study of ultrafast dynamics in spectral regions where ultrafast modulation or detection is challenging such as the mid-infrared and THz regions.

Low Noise Infrared Imaging Based on Frequency Upconversion

Abstract:In this paper, a low noise infrared imaging based on frequency upconversion is proposed. A function based on the quasi phase-match of two acquired images within 3dB width is formulated to evaluate the maximum step size of the nonlinear crystal temperature for each acquisition. The measurement time is reduced by acquiring images at these specific temperatures. The integration time of each frame is reassigned to improve the signal noise ratio of the acquired images. Comparing scanning the object, our method reduce the noise in background area to 17.14%.

Abstract:Mid-infrared spectroscopy probes molecular vibrations to identify chemical species and functional groups. Therefore, mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging is one of the most powerful and promising candidates for chemical imaging using optical methods. Yet high-speed and entire bandwidth mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging has not been realized. Here we report a mid-infrared hyperspectral chemical imaging technique that uses chirped pulse upconversion of sub-cycle pulses at the image plane. This technique offers a lateral resolution of 15 $\mu$m, and the field of view is adjustable between 800 $\mu$m $\times$ 600 $\mu$m to 12 mm $\times$ 9 mm. The hyperspectral imaging produces a 640 $\times$ 480 pixel image in 8 s, which covers a spectral range of 640-3015 cm$^{-1}$, comprising 1069 wavelength points and offering a wavenumber resolution of 2.6-3.7 cm$^{-1}$. For discrete frequency mid-infrared imaging, the measurement speed reaches a frame rate of 5 kHz, the repetition rate of the laser. As a demonstration, we effectively identified and mapped different components in a microfluidic device, plant cell, and mouse embryo section. The great capacity and latent force of this technique in chemical imaging promise to be applied to many fields such as chemical analysis, biology, and medicine.

Abstract: Ultra-broadband imaging devices with high performance are in great demand for a variety of technological applications, including imaging, remote sensing, and communications. An ultra-broadband up-converter is realized based on a p-GaAs homojunction interfacial workfunction internal photoemission (HIWIP) detector-light emitting diode (LED) device. The device demonstrates an ultra-broad response ranging from visible to terahertz (THz) with good reproducibility. The peak responsivity in the mid-infrared (MIR) region is 140 mA/W at 10.5 microns. The HIWIP-LED shows enormous potential for ultra-broadband up-conversion covering all infrared atmospheric windows, as well as the THz region, and the pixel-less imaging of the MIR spot from the CO2 laser is further demonstrated. In addition, the proposed up-converter also performs as a near-infrared and visible detector under zero bias by using a bi-functional LED. Thanks to its ultra-wide response, the HIWIP-LED up-converter has great promise for stable, high-performance ultra-broadband pixel-less imaging and multi-functional analysis systems.

Abstract:Abstract Single-pixel cameras have recently emerged as promising alternatives to multi-pixel sensors due to reduced costs and superior durability, which are particularly attractive for mid-infrared (MIR) imaging pertinent to applications including industry inspection and biomedical diagnosis. To date, MIR single-pixel photon-sparse imaging has yet been realized, which urgently calls for high-sensitivity optical detectors and high-fidelity spatial modulators. Here, we demonstrate a MIR single-photon computational imaging with a single-element silicon detector. The underlying methodology relies on nonlinear structured detection, where encoded time-varying pump patterns are optically imprinted onto a MIR object image through sum-frequency generation. Simultaneously, the MIR radiation is spectrally translated into the visible region, thus permitting infrared single-photon upconversion detection. Then, the use of advanced algorithms of compressed sensing and deep learning allows us to reconstruct MIR images under sub-Nyquist sampling and photon-starving illumination. The presented paradigm of single-pixel upconversion imaging is featured with single-pixel simplicity, single-photon sensitivity, and room-temperature operation, which would establish a new path for sensitive imaging at longer infrared wavelengths or terahertz frequencies, where high-sensitivity photon counters and high-fidelity spatial modulators are typically hard to access.
