Abstract:China, the world’s largest CO2 emitter, has promised to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. The hydrogen economy is one of the most promising alternatives to cut emissions. The planning of the hydrogen economy should consider the diversity of China, such as renewable energy distribution, industry distribution, etc. In this work, the impact of renewable energy availability on the production cost of hydrogen and the impact of hydrogen transport are explored on a national scale. A comprehensive techno-enviro-economic analysis of the hydrogen economy in China from its production to utilization is carried out. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to optimize the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and CO2 emissions of hydrogen (CEOH) utilizing local solar, wind, and grid electricity. Key questions, such as import H2 from where via which form for what application, are answered for each province. These are crucial and useful for decision-makers to plan hydrogen economy development.

Abstract:Synthetic hydrocarbon fuel, derived from renewable energy and captured carbon dioxide from flue gas and/or ambient air, can close its carbon cycle and is an important approach to sustainable energy. In this study, the thermodynamic performance of a co-electrolysis process for producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide from water and captured CO2 is investigated, based on current carbon capture and high-temperature electrolysis technologies. The exergy analysis is useful because it can reveal the energy losses due to irreversibilities and indicate possibilities for improvement of a process. Fuel synthesis systems integrated with or separated from different carbon capture technologies were evaluated and the analysis results have indicated that compared to the energy/exergy consumed by electrolysis, the energy/exergy penalty from CO2 capture is insignificant. The thermodynamic efficiency of fuel synthesis could be increased by developing fuel generation technologies with lower electricity requirements, especially when using solar and nuclear energy.

Abstract:The 2021 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, for the first time, stated that CO2 removal will be necessary to meet our climate goals. How-ever, there is a cost to accomplish CO2 removal or mitigation that varies by source. Accordingly, a sensible strategy to prevent climate change begins by mitigating emission sources requiring the least energy and capital investment per ton of CO2, such as new emitters and long-term stationary sources. The pro-duction of CO2-derived products should also start by favoring processes that bring to market high-value products with sufficient margin to tolerate a higher cost of goods.

Abstract:Abstract Since natural photosynthesis in our biosphere does not have the capacity to cope with the additional atmospheric CO 2 due to combustion of fossil fuels, CO 2 has to be actively removed. Efficient methods are currently being developed, but the captured gas has to be dumped in safe and permanent storage environments. Alternatively, it has to be purified before it can be recycled catalytically, using renewable energy, to high-value chemicals as feedstock for the synthesis of polymers, fine chemicals, or in large quantities liquid solar fuels. The combustion of solar fuels is carbon-neutral. If produced at locations where renewable energy is cheap, they become an important economic opportunity. The requirement to achieve a carbon-zero energy supply also for air traffic allows planning for an as yet unknown higher price compared to that of fossil fuels. Use of solar fuels in closed cycle applications may also relieve the energy situation in the large number of off-grid households in rural Africa. The availability of energy, in particular of electricity, is essential for advanced living conditions, prevents migration to urban areas, and therefore protects a rich variation of tribal cultural, religious and social traditions. Abstract:The Earth's environment is threatened by an increase of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. One of efficient methods for diminishing the imbalance of CO2 should involve the rapid conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals. One of the major challenges in the reduction of CO2 is the development of economical hydrogen sources. Water is the most abundant hydrogen resource. The direct utilization of water for the reduction of CO2 would be one of the most promising approaches for sustainable development in energy and environment. This paper outlines some recent advances in our researches on the reduction of CO2 with biomass as a reductant under hydrothermal conditions to directly utilize hydrogen in water.

Abstract:Climate change has emerged as one of the major challenges worldwide.Since the First Industrial Revolu-tion,the discovery and utilization of fossil energy has promoted the great prosperity and development of human society.Meanwhile,serious issues of environmental and climate change have arisen.In May 2021,CO2 concentra-tion in the atmosphere reached 419.13 ppm,observed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA)of US,which arrives at the highest value in human history[1].The CO2-based greenhouse gas emissions lead to global warming,which causes a serious threat to the survival of human being as well as sustainable development of society.In September 2020,it was announced that China would scale up its nationally determined contributions and adopt more vigorous policies and activities to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), a member of greenhouse gases, contributes significantly to maintaining a tolerable environment for all living species. However, with the development of modern society and the utilization of fossil fuels, the concentration of atmospheric CO2 has increased to 400 ppm, resulting in a serious greenhouse effect. Thus, converting CO2 into valuable chemicals is highly desired, especially with renewable solar energy, which shows great potential with the manner of photothermal catalysis. In this review, recent advancements in photothermal CO2 conversion are discussed, including the design of catalysts, analysis of mechanisms, engineering of reactors, and the corresponding techno-economic analysis. A guideline for future investigation and the anthropogenic carbon cycle are provided.

Abstract:It is very urgent to mitigate CO2 discharge with the more and more global climate disasters resulted from green house effect. Zero emissions could be reached in application sector in the case of taking hydrogen as the ideal clean energy resources. However, CO2 must be recovered in the sector of hydrogen-producing from fossil fuels to realize the life cycle CO2 mitigation. In this paper, several technological processes of hydrogen-producing are simulated with Aspen Plus™, and theirs energy and economics were analysed after investigating the technological processes of large scale hydrogen-producing methods such as steam methane reforming (SMR), auto-thermal reforming (ATR), partial oxidation and cool gasification in common use at present. It is pointed out that the configuration of coal gasification with quenching and hot gas feasibility, and could be further expanded into poly-generation systems based on coal gasification, which is very significant for China's sustainable development.

Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven CO2 conversion to hydrocarbon fuels is a sustainable approach to synchronously alleviating the energy crisis and achieving net CO2 emission. However, the dependence of conversion process on solar illumination hinders its practical application due to the intermittent availability of sunlight at night and on cloudy or rainy days. Here, we report a model material of Pt-loaded hexagonal tungsten trioxide (Pt/h-WO3) for decoupling light and dark reaction processes, demonstrating the sustainable CO2 conversion under dark condition for the first time. In such a material system, hydrogen atoms can be produced by photocatalytic water splitting under solar illumination, stored together with electrons in the h-WO3 through the transition of W6+ to W5+, and spontaneously released to trigger catalytic CO2 reduction under dark condition. Furthermore, we demonstrate using natural light that CH4 production can persist at night and on rainy days, proving the accomplishment of all-weather CO2 conversion via a sustainable way.

Abstract:Fossil fuels are currently the major energy source and are rapidly consumed to supply the increasing energy demands of mankind. CO2, a product of fossil fuel combustion, leads to climate change and will have a serious impact on our environment. There is an increasing need to mitigate CO2 emissions using carbon–neutral energy sources. Therefore, research activities are devoted to CO2 capture, storage and utilization. For instance, photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels is a promising avenue to recycle carbon dioxide. Here we review the present status of the emission and utilization of CO2. Then we review the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 by TiO2, modified TiO2 and non-titanium metal oxides. Finally, the challenges and prospects for further development of CO2 photocatalytic reduction are presented.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO 2 reduction to hydrocarbon fuel technology is directly driven by solar energy and converts CO 2 into directly usable chemicals. It is a transformative technology to help carbon peak and carbon neutrality. The efficient and low-cost operation of this technology is determined by light absorption and utilization,the morphology and structure of photocatalysts, the interfacial catalytic reaction, and mass transfer etc. In general,the internal energy and mass transfer of this technology is a multi-scale spatio-temporal process and needs to be studied by using a multi-physics field coupling model from both theoretical and application aspects. In this paper,the fundamental theory and the state-of-the-art are summarized. Also, we present the development tendency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology from aspects of light absorption expansion and utilization, photogenerated carrier separation enhancement, oxidation/reduction half-reaction optimization, and mass transfer enhancement.Then we discuss the matching strategy between energy transfer and chemical reaction within the whole process,which provide the way for reducing the energy loss, promoting performance, and future industrial application of solar-driven CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:Excessive CO2 emissions in the atmosphere from anthropogenic activity can be divided into point sources and diffuse sources. The capture of CO2 from flue gases of large industrial installations and its conversion into fuels and chemicals with fast catalytic processes seems technically possible. Some emerging technologies are already being demonstrated on an industrial scale. Others are still being tested on a laboratory or pilot scale. These emerging chemical technologies can be implemented in a time window ranging from 5 to 20 years. The massive amounts of energy needed for capturing processes and the conversion of CO2 should come from low-carbon energy sources, such as tidal, geothermal, and nuclear energy, but also, mainly, from the sun. Synthetic methane gas that can be formed from CO2 and hydrogen gas is an attractive renewable energy carrier with an existing distribution system. Methanol offers advantages as a liquid fuel and is also a building block for the chemical industry. CO2 emissions from diffuse sources is a difficult problem to solve, particularly for CO2 emissions from road, water, and air transport, but steady progress in the development of technology for capturing CO2 from air is being made. It is impossible to ban carbon from the entire energy supply of mankind with the current technological knowledge, but a transition to a mixed carbon-hydrogen economy can reduce net CO2 emissions and ultimately lead to a CO2 -neutral world.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into fuels via solar-driven thermochemical cycles of metal oxides is promising to address global climate change and energy crisis challenges simultaneously. However, it suffers from low energy conversion efficiency (ηen) due to high sensible heat losses when swinging between reduction and oxidation cycles, and a single product of fuels can hardly meet multiple kinds of energy demands. Here, we propose an alternative way to upsurge energy conversion efficiency by integrating solar thermochemical CO2 splitting with a supercritical CO2 thermodynamic cycle. When gas phase heat recovery (εgg) is equal to 0.9, the highest energy conversion efficiency of 20.4% is obtained at the optimal cycle high pressure of 260 bar. In stark contrast, the highest energy conversion efficiency is only 9.8% for conventional solar thermochemical CO2 splitting without including a supercritical CO2 cycle. The superior performance is attributed to efficient harvesting of waste heat and synergy of CO2 splitting cycles with supercritical CO2 cycles. This work provides alternative routes for promoting the development and deployment of solar thermochemical CO2 splitting techniques.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels, an artificial photosynthesis, is based on the simulation of natural photosynthesis in green plants, whereby O2 and carbohydrates are produced from H2 O and CO2 using sunlight as an energy source. It couples the reductive half-reaction of CO2 fixation with a matched oxidative half-reaction such as water oxidation, to achieve a carbon neutral cycle, which is like killing two birds with one stone in terms of saving the environment and supplying future energy. The present review provides an overview and highlights recent state-of-the-art accomplishments of overcoming the drawback of low photoconversion efficiency and selectivity through the design of highly active photocatalysts from the point of adsorption of reactants, charge separation and transport, light harvesting, and CO2 activation. It specifically includes: i) band-structure engineering, ii) nanostructuralization, iii) surface oxygen vacancy engineering, iv) macro-/meso-/microporous structuralization, v) exposed facet engineering, vi) co-catalysts, vii) the development of a Z-scheme system. The challenges and prospects for future development of this field are also present.

Abstract:Abstract Coal consumption leads to over 15 billion tons of global CO 2 emissions annually, which will continue at a considerable intensity in the foreseeable future. To remove the huge amount of CO 2 , a practically feasible way of direct carbon mitigation, instead of capturing that from dilute tail gases, should be developed; as intended, we developed two innovative supporting technologies, of which the status, strengths, applications, and perspective are discussed in this paper. One is supercritical water gasification-based coal/biomass utilization technology, which orderly converts chemical energy of coal and low-grade heat into hydrogen energy, and can achieve poly-generation of steam, heat, hydrogen, power, pure CO 2 , and minerals. The other one is the renewables-powered CO 2 reduction techniques, which uses CO 2 as the resource for carbon-based fuel production. When combining the above two technical loops, one can achieve a full resource utilization and zero CO 2 emission, making it a practically feasible way for China and global countries to achieve carbon neutrality while creating substantial domestic benefits of economic growth, competitiveness, well-beings, and new industries.

Abstract:The survival and sustainable development of humanity are gravely threatened by climate change, which has recently been elevated to the status of one of the greatest threats to humanity's survival and security on a worldwide scale. In response to global climate change, how to obtain renewable and clean fuels is an important challenge for the sustainable development of human society. In order to reach the carbon peak and attain carbon neutrality, using CO2 as a resource has become a crucial aim for human civilization. Converting CO2 into chemical products with higher added value, that is, CO2 resource utilization technology can not only achieve CO2 emission reduction but also have certain economic benefits. The technologies of CO2 resource utilization primarily include photocatalytic reduction, electrocatalytic reduction, thermal catalytic reduction, and relay catalysis. This paper mainly summarizes the mechanism of CO2 catalytic conversion technologies and the research status of related catalysts, and summarizes and discusses prospects for the development of the CO2 catalytic reduction system (catalyst modification, product selectivity improvement, etc.). The ideas and guidance are provided for the development of efficient and stable CO2 reduction catalysts and the application of CO2 catalytic reduction technology in the areas of environment and energy.
