Abstract:The precast segmental column (PSC) is gaining growing research attention owing to its notable advantages. Past studies have identified concrete crushing of the precast segments and insufficient energy dissipation (ED) capacity as primary challenges for PSCs subjected to seismic loadings. This study introduced a PSC with earthquake-resistant features and its seismic behavior was investigated experimentally. In order to reduce the local concrete crushing damages, concrete-filled double-skin steel tubes (CFDST) precast segments were utilized in the proposed column. In order to enhance the ED capability of the PSC, a combined ED system was introduced, which consisted of internal shape memory alloy (SMA) bars and external steel ED devices, and subsequently implemented within the column. The internal SMA bars that installed near the plastic hinge region could dissipate energy without increasing the residual deformation of the column, while the external ED device could further improve the ED capacity of the bridge column. The external design of the external ED devices made the post-earthquake inspection and replacement more convenient. A PSC with steel-reinforced solid segments and internal steel ED bars was also prepared and tested as a reference. According to the test results, the proposed novel column had better seismic performance than that of the reference column, including less damages in the segments, smaller residual displacement, better ED capacity, and higher post-yield stiffness. Finally, finite element models and analytical models were developed, and the modelling results were compared with the test results.
