Abstract:Different types of maritime accidents will exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of the causal mechanisms related to human factors. In the present study, five maritime accident scenarios are defined to investigate and compare the similarities and differences in the contribution of human factors. To achieve this, a data-driven approach that integrates the superiority of HFACS (Human Factors Analysis and Classification System), grounding theory, ARM (Association rule mining), and data-driven BN (Bayesian network) is proposed. First, HFACS and grounded theory are employed identify and classify human factors based on 383 maritime accident reports. Second, ARM is introduced to capture the causal relationships among these factors within HFACS for different scenarios, thereby providing an interface for the BN structure. Finally, a data-driven BN is developed by mapping the ARM results. The criticality, sensitivity, as well as causal chains associated with human factors across the five scenarios are identified and ranked by BN forward and backward inference. Furthermore, a novel risk matrix is generated for each scenario by the extraction of both criticality and sensitivity of human factors, which enables crew, shipping companies, and other stakeholders to differentiate or tailor targeted safety strategies for preventing different types of maritime accidents.
