Abstract:Lignin, characterized by its amorphous, heavily polymerized structure, is a primary natural source of aromatic compounds, yet its complex constitution poses considerable challenges in its transformation and utilization. Therefore, the selective cleavage of C–C bonds represents a critical and challenging step in lignin degradation, essential for the production of high-value aromatic compounds. In this study, we report a simple electrocatalytic approach for lignin valorization via C–C bond cleavage by developing a nonmetallic electrocatalyst of carbon-based materials. It is found that the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the electrocatalyst have a significant effect on the degradation process. Under mild conditions, the hydrophilic carbon paper exhibits 100% substrate conversion, yielding 97% benzaldehyde and 96% quinone with ionic liquid electrolytes. The mechanism study shows that the carbon catalyst with higher surface defects favors electron transfer in the oxidative cleavage process of C–C bonds. These results signify a substantial advancement in lignin degradation, offering an environmentally friendly, metal-free electrochemical route.

However, the existing electrocatalysts (traditional bulk metal and metal oxides) for C-C bond oxidative cleavage suffer from poor selectivity and low product yields. We show for the first time that atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites planted on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Pt-1/N-CNTs), constructed via a stepwise polymerization-carbonization-electrostatic adsorption strategy, are highly active and selective toward C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage in beta-O-4 model compounds under ambient conditions. Pt-1/N-CNTs exhibits 99% substrate conversion with 81% yield of benzaldehyde, which is exceptional and unprecedented compared with previously reported electrocatalysts. Moreover, Pt-1/N-CNTs using only 0.41 wt % Pt achieved a much higher benzaldehyde yield than those of the state-of-the-art bulk Pt electrode (100 wt % Pt) and commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 wt % Pt). Systematic experimental investigation together with density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that the superior performance of Pt-1/N-CNTs arises from the atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites facilitating the formation of a key C-beta radical intermediate, further inducing a radical/radical cross-coupling path to break the C-alpha-C-beta bond. This work opens up opportunities in lignin valorization via a green and sustainable electrochemical route with ultralow noble metal usage.

Abstract:Lignin is the most promising candidate for producing aromatic compounds from biomass. However, the challenge lies in the cleavage of C-C bonds between lignin monomers under mild conditions, as these bonds have high dissociation energy. Electrochemical oxidation, which allows for mild cleavage of C-C bonds, is considered an attractive solution. To achieve low-energy consumption in the valorization of lignin, the use of highly efficient electrocatalysts is essential. In this study, a meticulously designed catalyst consisting of cobalt-doped nickel (oxy)hydroxide on molybdenum disulfide heterojunction was developed. The presence of molybdenum in a high valence state promoted the adsorption of tert-butyl hydroperoxide, leading to the formation of critical radical intermediates. In addition, the incorporation of cobalt doping regulated the electronic structure of nickel, resulting in a lower energy barrier. As a result, the heterojunction catalyst demonstrated a selectivity of 85.36% for cleaving the Cα-Cβ bond in lignin model compound, achieving a substrate conversion of 93.69% under ambient conditions. In addition, the electrocatalyst depolymerized 49.82 wt% of soluble fractions from organosolv lignin (OL), resulting in a yield of up to 13 wt% of aromatic monomers. Significantly, the effectiveness of the prepared electrocatalyst was also demonstrated using industrial Kraft lignin (KL). Therefore, this research offers a practical approach for implementing electrocatalytic oxidation in lignin refining.

Abstract:Lignin presents as a renewable aromatic resource for value-added chemical production. However, it remains challenging to cleavage C-C bonds in lignin under ambient conditions. Electrochemical oxidation as a renewable energy technology presents an attractive alternative to traditional processes. Herein, we report an efficient electrocatalytic strategy for C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage of the beta-O-4 linkage in lignin model compounds at room temperature with platinum as the anode and tert-butyl hydroperoxides (t-BuOOH in water, 70% aq soln) as the oxidants, exhibiting high yields for the aromatic aldehydes and phenols. This electrocatalytic strategy is demonstrated to be highly selective for the transformation of a broad selection of lignin model dimers, polymeric compound, and even real lignin into the desired aromatic aldehydes. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction may proceed via a C-beta radical process involving a peroxide intermediate. This work opens up opportunities in electrocatalysis to selectively break C-alpha-C-beta bonds and transform lignin to valuable chemicals under ambient conditions by using renewable electricity.

Abstract:Cleaving the C-C bonds in lignin to afford value-added low-molecular-weight aromatic products is promising but a challenging project. In this contribution, a mild and efficient strategy for one-step selective C-C bond cleavage in beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models has been developed over pyridinium-based photocatalysts. The strong electron-accepting ability of the pyridinium core unit and the neutral nitrogen atom of the pyridazine substituent group provide a proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) channel to promote hydrogen dissociation from the OH or CH groups to form the corresponding free radical intermediates, thus directly triggering the cleavage of C-C bonds via a beta-scission process. Benzaldehyde and phenyl formate are eventually formed as the main products. This work not only enriches the application of the pyridinium family as a low-cost, eco-friendly, and sustainable alternative for producing value-added chemicals from renewable biomass resources, but also provides a new idea for designing novel organic catalysts with PCET features to decrease the consumption of precious metals.

Abstract:Lignin, as an intriguing native renewable aromatic polymer, can be depolymerized into aromatic platform chemicals by catalysis procedures, and its high-value conversion is of great significance for realizing the green and sustainable production of biofuels, fine chemicals, and bulk chemicals. With this regard, catalytic oxidation of lignin through electrochemistry offers an economized energy nature with tunable potential or current to determine the products selectivity and conversion rate. However, to realize the controllable degradation of lignin, the electrocatalytic system, including the catalysts, electrolyte, reaction cell, etc., should be rationally designed based on the well-understanding of the depolymerization mechanism. In this review, we focused on the bond cleavage mechanism of C—C bond and C—O bond, respectively, in the depolymerization of lignin. Research works based on the different bond cleavage mechanisms in the electrochemical oxidation of lignin and its model compounds to aromatic monomers in recent years were reviewed here, including the different types of catalytic systems, electrocatalysts, and free radical initiators. Of which the free radical intermediates play decisive role in the highly selective cleavage of C—O and C—C bonds. Finally, the challenges and development perspectives in the future of electrocatalytic lignin depolymerization are also provided.

Abstract:Lignin, which is an important component of biomass in nature and is constantly produced in industry, becomes potential raw material for sustainable production of fine chemicals and biofuels. Electrocatalysis has been extensively involved in the activation of simple molecules and cleavage-recasting of complex scaffolds in an elegant environment. As such, electrocatalytic cleavage of C−C(O) in β -O-4 model molecules of lignin to value-added chemicals has received much attention in recent years. This mini-review introduces various anodes (e.g., Pb, Pt, Ni, Co., and Ir) developed for electro-oxidative lignin degradation (EOLD) under mild conditions. Attention was placed to understand the conversion pathways and involved reaction mechanisms during EOLD, with emphasis on the product distribution caused by different electrodes.

This protocol exhibits a broad scope of lignin models and excellent compatibility of functionalization reagents, constructing a series of functionalized lignin-based aromatic compounds. Highly selective formation of alkyl radical species through a proton-coupled electron transfer and beta-scission process provides the opportunity to form new C-C and C-N bonds by reaction with electrophilic reagents.

Abstract:It is challenging to realize the selective C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 linkages for production of high‐value aromatic chemicals due to its intrinsic inertness and complex structure. Here we report a light‐driven, chlorine‐radical‐based protocol to realize the oxidative C‐C bond cleavage in various lignin model compounds catalyzed by commercially available TPT and CaCl2, achieving high conversion and good to high product yields at room temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferential activation of Cβ‐H bond facilitates the oxidation and C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 model via chlorine radical. Furthermore, this method is also applicable to the depolymerization of natural lignin extracts, furnishing the aromatic oxygenates from the cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds. This study provides experimental foundations to the depolymerization and valorization of lignin into high value‐added aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Lignin represents the most abundant and sustainable aromatic resource to produce value-added aromatics. However, an efficient and selective cleavage of recalcitrant C–C bonds in lignin under mild conditions remains challenging. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for such a C–C bond cleavage under ambient conditions, although the activity and selectivity need to be further improved. Herein, using polyimide as a photocatalyst, we report an efficient and selective C–C bond cleavage in a β-O-4 lignin model under visible light at room temperature. The lignin model was converted into aromatic products with >99% substrate conversion and >99% C–C bond cleavage selectivity, which are superior to previously reported photocatalytic systems. Experimental investigations together with theoretical calculations indicated that the superior performance of the polyimide photocatalyst was attributed to its strong photooxidation capability and efficient charge carrier separation efficiency. Mechanistic studies revealed that the dehydrogenation of the lignin model driven by photogenerated holes was the rate-determining step. This work provides useful guidance for the design of high-performance photocatalysts for selective C–C bond cleavage of lignin.

Abstract:The photocatalytic selective breaking of recalcitrant C alpha-C beta bond in real lignin to product value-added chemicals under mild conditions is intriguing but remains challenging. Herein, a sustainable strategy for the efficient and selective breakage of C alpha-C beta bond in lignin beta-O-4 model compounds and lignin over porous tubular g-C3N4 (PTCN) photocatalyst was designed under ambient conditions. Compared with bulk g-C3N4, the construction of PTCN not only facilitates photogenerated charge separation and transfer, but also provides more exposed interior active sites, which is conductive to reactant adsorption on the surface of PTCN, thereby resulting in the higher photocatalytic efficiency. With this strategy, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol as the typical model substrate was completely converted into aromatic monomers with C alpha-C beta bond cleavage selectivity of 97.2 %. Both mechanistic studies and theoretical calculations revealed that the photogenerated holes, electrons and center dot O2- respectively played an essential role in the C beta-H dehydrogenation and C alpha-C beta bond breakage. Native lignin samples (alkaline, pine and wheat straw) were applied to these photocatalytic systems and successfully depolymerized with C alpha-C beta bond cleavage under optimal reaction conditions. This work could provide an in-depth insight into photocatalyst design for the economical and efficient valorization of lignin.

Abstract:Despite the promise of photocatalysis for extracting aromatic compounds from renewable lignin feedstocks, the selective cleavage of C α –C β bonds in lignin under mild conditions poses a persistent challenge, primarily due to their elevated dissociation energies and steric hindrance. Herein, an efficient photocatalytic strategy for selectively breaking the C α –C β bonds of lignin with visible-light irradiation and room temperature is proposed, facilitated by the Zn(II)-doped porous graphitic carbon nitride (Zn/CN) photocatalyst. Reduced energy band gap and photoluminescence, along with intensified visible-light absorption and enhanced photocurrent of Zn/CN, contribute to its efficacy in photocatalytic activity. Consequently, the lignin model compound (2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol) achieves a conversion rate of 99 %, demonstrating a notable selectivity of 97 % in specifically breaking the C α –C β bonds. Mechanistic investigations identify that photogenerated holes play a pivotal role during the photocatalytic conversion. Additionally, the activity and selectivity of Zn/CN photocatalyst are further confirmed by the successful photocatalytic conversion of pine kraft lignin, yielding high-value chemicals such as benzoic acid and vanillin. This research proposes an economical, efficient, and facile method for utilizing renewable lignin feedstocks under photocatalysis, thus advancing the production of high-value aromatic compounds.

Abstract:The intricate structure of lignin poses significant challenges to its high-value utilization. Electrocatalytic conversion of lignin into valuable aromatic compounds using spinel catalysts under mild conditions is a promising approach. The electrochemical conversion of lignin and its model compounds was conducted using Ni-Fe spinel catalysts, achieving selective cleavage of the C-O bond in lignin model with 72 % phenol selectivity and 82 % conversion. Additionally, efficient electrochemical cleavage of the C-O bond was achieved using alkali lignin. Structural characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the Ni-Fe spinel catalyst exhibited a uniform electron distribution, enhancing the adsorption of the C-O bond and lowering the activation free energy associated with C-O bond cleavage. Moreover, the heterogeneous interface of NiFe 2 O 4 further accelerated the reaction kinetics. This study represents a significant breakthrough in active site identification and mechanistic analysis, facilitating the selective conversion of lignin and providing an efficient method for lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a potentially promising approach to harvest aromatic compounds from lignin. However, the development of an active and selective solid photocatalyst is still challenging for lignin transformation under ambient conditions. We herein report a mild photocatalytic oxidative strategy for C-C bond cleavage of lignin beta-O-4 and beta-1 linkages using a mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride catalyst. Identifications by solid-state NMR techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that pi-pi stacking interactions are most likely present between the flexible carbon nitride surface and lignin model molecule. Besides, low charge recombination efficiency and high specific surface area (206.5 m(2) g(-1)) of the catalyst also contribute to its high catalytic activity. Mechanistic investigations reveal that photogenerated holes, as the main active species, trigger the oxidation and C-C bond cleavage of lignin models. This study sheds light on the interaction between complex lignin structures and the catalyst surface and provides a new strategy of photocatalytic cleavage of lignin models with heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Abstract:Depolymerization of recalcitrant lignin is a crucial step in realizing the full potential of transforming biomass to value-added small organic molecules. Herein, we report a photocatalytic system consisting of ultrathin CdS nanosheets decorated with first-row transition metals (M/CdS) for the direct photocleavage of lignin model compounds to small aromatic products. In the meantime, the reducing power of M/CdS is utilized to simultaneously generate another valuable product, H-2, hence eliminating the necessity of sacrificial reagents and maximizing the energy conversion efficiency. We further demonstrate that, by judiciously modulating the photocatalytic conditions, it is feasible to yield different products with very high selectivity using the same catalyst of Ni/CdS. A series of control experiments were performed to investigate the mechanistic steps of each reaction and highlight the important roles played by both solvent and base in the photocleavage of the beta-O-4 bond in lignin valorization.
Interfacial High-Valence Ni(IV)-enabled C-H Activation for Photoelectrochemical C-C Bond Cleavage of Lignin to Exclusively Produce Aromatic Carboxylic Acids

Abstract:Sustainable upgrading of biomass to high-value chemicals is greatly dependent on catalytic C-C/C-O bond cleavage of high selectivity. Here, an oxidation-enhanced photoelectrochemical protocol was developed to be capable of breaking different types of C-C bonds for efficiently producing aromatic carboxylic acids (85.0–99.8% yields) from lignin. Ni local electronic state of the prepared F-Fe2O3-Co:NiOxHy with excellent durability could be modulated, and high-valence Ni(Ⅳ) reactive species played a key role in the oxidative C-C bond scission of various lignin models. In-situ characterization and control experiments indicated that photocatalytic radical and electrocatalytic interface facilitated C-H/O-H delocalization, contributing significantly to the enhanced oxidation process. In addition, quantum calculations elaborated that photo-excited holes and Ni(Ⅳ) are key reactive species for enhancive electrocatalytic cleavage of different C-C bonds in lignin to exclusively furnish aromatic carboxylic acids. This research provides a renewable funnel strategy for using solar energy to produce high-value mono-functional products from biomass.

Abstract:Electrochemical oxidative lignin cleavage and coupled 2‐furaldehyde reduction provide a promising approach for producing high‐value added products. However, developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts with noble metal‐like activity still remains a challenge. Here, we report an efficient electrochemical strategy for the selective oxidative cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds in lignin into aromatic monomers by tailoring the electronic structure through P‐doped CoMoO4 spinels (99% conversion, highest monomer selectivity of 56%). Additionally, the conversion and selectivity of 2‐furaldehyde reduction to 2‐methyl furan reached 87% and 73%, respectively. The in situ Fourier transform infrared and density functional theory analysis revealed that an upward shift of the Ed upon P‐doping led to an increase in the antibonding level, which facilitated the Cα‐Cβ adsorption of the lignin model compounds, thereby enhancing the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of the active site. This work explored the potential of a spinel as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the oxidative cracking of lignin and the reductive conversion of small organic molecules to high‐value added chemicals via P anion modulation.
