Abstract:A measurement of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2\mathrm{S})$ production is presented. It is based on a data sample from Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $0.42\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ and $25\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ in Pb+Pb and $pp$, respectively. The measurements of per-event yields, nuclear modification factors, and non-prompt fractions are performed in the dimuon decay channel for $9 < p_{T}^{\mu\mu} < 40$ GeV in dimuon transverse momentum, and $-2.0 < y_{\mu\mu} < 2.0$ in rapidity. Strong suppression is found in Pb+Pb collisions for both prompt and non-prompt $J/\psi$, as well as for prompt and non-prompt $\psi(2\mathrm{S})$, increasing with event centrality. The suppression of prompt $\psi(2\mathrm{S})$ is observed to be stronger than that of $J/\psi$, while the suppression of non-prompt $\psi(2\mathrm{S})$ is equal to that of the non-prompt $J/\psi$ within uncertainties, consistent with the expectation that both arise from \textit{b}-quarks propagating through the medium. Despite prompt and non-prompt $J/\psi$ arising from different mechanisms, the dependence of their nuclear modification factors on centrality is found to be quite similar.

Abstract:The production of $\psi(2S)$ mesons in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16$ TeV is studied with the LHCb detector using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 nb$^{-1}$. The prompt and nonprompt $\psi(2S)$ production cross-sections and the ratio of the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ cross-section are measured as a function of the meson transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame, together with forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors. The production of prompt $\psi(2S)$ is observed to be more suppressed compared to $pp$ collisions than the prompt $J/\psi$ production, while the nonprompt productions have similar suppression factors.

Abstract:We report our latest results on charmonium suppression as measured at the CERN-SPS in Pb-Pb interactions at an incident beam momentum of 158 GeV/c per nucleon. Preliminary results obtained from the most recent sample of data collected in year 2000 under improved experimental conditions are compared with published results. For the most peripheral Pb-Pb collisions, J/psi suppression agrees with the normal absorption measured from interactions of lighter nuclei while a steady increasing abnormal supression is observed with increasing centrality.

Abstract:The data for (p(t)(2))(E-t) of J/psi produced in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-SPS contain information about when anomalous suppression is active. A general transport equation which describes transverse motion of J/psi in the absorptive medium is proposed and solved for a QGP and a comover scenario of suppression. While inconsistencies appear in the QGP, the comover approach accounts for the data fairly well. For central collisions the bulk of anomalous suppression happens rather late, 3-4 fm/c after the nuclear overlap.

Abstract:The NA50 Collaboration has recently observed a strong suppression of J/Psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 Gev/n. We show that this recent observation finds a quantitative explanation in a model which relates the suppression mechanism to the local energy density, whose value is higher in Pb-Pb collisions than in any other system studied previously. The sensitivity of the phenomenon to small changes in the energy density could be suggestive of quark-gluon plasma formation.

Abstract:The second-order ($v_2$) and third-order ($v_3$) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/$\psi$, as well as prompt $\psi$(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb$^{-1}$ recorded with the CMS detector. The J/$\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The $v_2$ and $v_3$ coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measured $v_2$ values for prompt J/$\psi$ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/$\psi$ mesons. The prompt J/$\psi$ $v_2$ values at high $p_\mathrm{T}$ are found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/$\psi$ meson $v_3$ and prompt $\psi$(2S) $v_2$ and $v_3$ values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm AA}$ of prompt and non-prompt J$/\psi$, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity ($|y| < 0.9$) in the transverse momentum region $1.5 < p_{\rm T} < 10$ GeV/$c$. Both prompt and non-prompt J$/\psi$ measurements indicate a significant suppression for $p_{\rm T} >$ 5 GeV/$c$, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlapping $p_{\rm T}$ intervals, and cover the kinematic region down to $p_{\rm T}$ = 1.5 GeV/$c$ at midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J$/\psi$ in central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J$/\psi$ production from recombination of c and $\overline{\rm c}$ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J$/\psi$. For non-prompt J$/\psi$, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark$-$gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties.

J/ψ Production and Suppression in High Energy Proton-Nucleus Collisions

Abstract:We apply a color glass condensate + nonrelativistic QCD (CGC + NRQCD) framework to compute J/psi production in deuteron-nucleus collisions at RHIC and proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC. Our results match smoothly at high p(perpendicular to) to a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD + NRQCD computation. Excellent agreement is obtained for p(perpendicular to) spectra at the RHIC and LHC for central and forward rapidities, as well as for the normalized ratio R-pA of these results to spectra in proton-proton collisions. In particular, we observe that the R-pA data are strongly bounded by our computations of the same for each of the individual NRQCD channels; this result provides strong evidence that our description is robust against uncertainties in initial conditions and hadronization mechanisms.

Abstract:The production of inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/$\psi$ was studied for the first time at midrapidity ($ -1.37 < y_{\rm cms} < 0.43$) in p$-$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 8.16$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive J/$\psi$ mesons were reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel in the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) interval $0 < p_{\rm T} < 14$ GeV/$c$ and the prompt and non-prompt contributions were separated on a statistical basis for $p_{\rm T} > 2$ GeV/$c$. The study of the J/$\psi$ mesons in the dielectron channel used for the first time in ALICE online single-electron triggers from the Transition Radiation Detector, providing a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $689 \pm 13 \mu{\rm b}^{-1}$. The proton$-$proton reference cross section for inclusive J/$\psi$ was obtained based on interpolations of measured data at different centre-of-mass energies and a universal function describing the $p_{\rm T}$-differential J/$\psi$ production cross sections. The $p_{\rm T}$-differential nuclear modification factors $R_{\rm pPb}$ of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/$\psi$ are consistent with unity and described by theoretical models implementing only nuclear shadowing.

Abstract:The recently published data for <p(t)(2)> for J/psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are analyzed. For low values of transverse energy E-t, where normal suppression dominates, <p(t)(2)> (E-t) scales with the path length of the gluons which fuse to make the J/psi. In the E-t domain of anomalous suppression <p(t)(2)> (E-t) is found to rise linearly with the relative amount of anomalous suppression. This empirical law is reproduced within an analytically solvable transport model which allows high p(t) J/psi 's to escape anomalous suppression. Interpreted in this way, the data for <p(t)(2)> (E-t) lead to an estimate of t(A) similar to 4 fm/c for t the duration of anomalous suppression. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
Measurement of the polarizations of prompt and non-prompt J/$ψ$ and $ψ$(2S) mesons produced in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:The polarizations of prompt and non-prompt J$/\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, using data samples collected by the CMS experiment in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 103.3 fb$^{-1}$. Based on the analysis of the dimuon decay angular distributions in the helicity frame, the polar anisotropy, $\lambda_\theta$, is measured as a function of the transverse momentum, $p_\mathrm{T}$, of the charmonium states, in the 25-120 and 20-100 GeV ranges for the J$/\psi$ and $\psi$(2S), respectively. The non-prompt polarizations agree with predictions based on the hypothesis that, for $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\gtrsim$ 25 GeV, the non-prompt J$/\psi$ and $\psi$(2S) are predominantly produced in two-body B meson decays. The prompt results clearly exclude strong transverse polarizations, even for $p_\mathrm{T}$ exceeding 30 times the J$/\psi$ mass, where $\lambda_\theta$ tends to an asymptotic value around 0.3. Taken together with previous measurements, by CMS and LHCb at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV, the prompt polarizations show a significant variation with $p_\mathrm{T}$, at low $p_\mathrm{T}$.

$J/ψ$ and $D^0$ production in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV PbNe collisions

Abstract:The first measurement of $J/\psi$ and $D^0$ production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of $J/\psi$ and $D^0$ mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5 TeV per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The $J/\psi/D^0$ production cross-section ratio is studied as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. These data are compared with measurements from $p$Ne collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed $J/\psi$ suppresion trend when comparing $p$Ne and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions.

Abstract:We present a complete evaluation for J/psi(psi`) prompt production at the Tevatron and LHC at next-to-leading order in nonrelativistic QCD, including color-singlet, color-octet, and higher charmonia feeddown contributions. The short-distance coefficients of P-3(J)[8] at next-to-leading order are found to be larger than leading order by more than an order of magnitude but with a minus sign at high transverse momentum p(T). Two new linear combinations of color-octet matrix elements are obtained from the CDF data, and used to predict J/psi production at the LHC, which agrees with the CMS data. The possibility of S-1(0)[8] dominance and the J/psi polarization puzzle are also discussed.
J/psi azimuthal anisotropy in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

Abstract:The study of J/psi azimuthal anisotropy allows for a disentanglement of various production mechanisms and possibly an access to charm quark azimuthal anisotropy. J/psi meson produced from direct pQCD processes have little azimuthal anisotropy due to the lack of collectivity or azimuthal preference of initial emitting, while J/psi meson produced from recombination of charm quarks in the medium are expected to inherit the azimuthal anisotropy of the constituent charm quarks. We present measurements of J/psi azimuthal anisotropy, with J/psi reconstructed via the di-electron channel, as a function of transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. This analysis is carried out with data taken by the STAR experiment during RHIC operation in year 2011. Combined with the published results using 2010 data, the updated results provide further support to the conclusion that J/psi production above 2 GeV/c is unlikely to be dominated by regeneration of fully thermalized charm quarks.
Nuclear absorption and anomalous $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions

Abstract:We discuss $J/\psi$ suppression in a QCD based nuclear absorption model. Centrality dependence of $J/\psi$ suppression in S+U and in Pb+Pb collisions are explained in the model. However, the model fails to explain the centrality dependence of $\psi\prime$ suppression. $\psi\prime$ suppression in S+U or in Pb+Pb collisions require additional suppression. Additional suppression of $\psi\prime$, due to hadronic comovers or due to QGP formation could not be distinguished in Pb+Pb collisions. We then show that the centrality dependence of the ratio, $\psi\prime$ over $J/\psi$, could possibly distinguish two scenario (e.g. QGP or hadronic comover) at RHIC energy.

Abstract:The production cross-section of $J/\psi$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.2 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment. The measurement is performed with both $J/\psi$ mesons in the transverse momentum range $0<p_{\text{T}}<14$ GeV/$c$ and rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. The cross-section of this process is measured to be 16.36$\pm$0.28(stat)$\pm$0.88(syst) nb. The contributions from single-parton scattering and double-parton scattering are separated based on the dependence of the cross-section on the absolute rapidity difference $\Delta y$ between the two $J/\psi$ mesons. The effective cross-section of double-parton scattering is measured to be $\sigma_{\text{eff}}=$13.1$\pm$1.8(stat)$\pm$2.3(syst) mb. The distribution of the azimuthal angle $\phi_{\text{CS}}$ of one of the $J/\psi$ mesons in the Collins-Soper frame and the $p_{\text{T}}$-spectrum of the $J/\psi$ pairs are also measured for the study of the gluon transverse-momentum dependent distributions inside protons. The extracted values of $\langle\cos2\phi_{\text{CS}}\rangle$ and $\langle\cos4\phi_{\text{CS}}\rangle$ are consistent with zero, but the presence of azimuthal asymmetry at a few percent level is allowed.

Energy dependence of coherent photonuclear production of J/$ψ$ mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$=5.02 TeV

Abstract:The cross section for coherent photonuclear production of J/$\psi$ is presented as a function of the electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) of Pb. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. Cross sections are presented in five different J/$\psi$ rapidity ranges within $|y|<4$, with the J/$\psi$ reconstructed via its dilepton decay channels. In some events the J/$\psi$ is not accompanied by EMD, while other events do produce neutrons from EMD at beam rapidities either in one or the other beam direction, or in both. The cross sections in a given rapidity range and for different configurations of neutrons from EMD allow for the extraction of the energy dependence of this process in the range $17 < W_{\gamma\, \mathrm{Pb, n}} <920$ GeV, where $W_{\gamma\, \mathrm{Pb, n}}$ is the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon of the $\gamma\,\mathrm{Pb}$ system. This range corresponds to a Bjorken-$x$ interval spanning about three orders of magnitude: $ 1.1\times10^{-5}<x<3.3\times 10^{-2}$. In addition to the ultra-peripheral and photonuclear cross sections, the nuclear suppression factor is obtained. These measurements point to a strong depletion of the gluon distribution in Pb nuclei over a broad, previously unexplored, energy range. These results, together with previous ALICE measurements, provide unprecedented information to probe quantum chromodynamics at high energies.

Abstract:The recently published data for 〈p2t〉 for J/ψ production in Pb–Pb collisions at 158 AGeV are analyzed. For low values of transverse energy Et, where normal suppression dominates, 〈p2t〉(Et) scales with the path length of the gluons which fuse to make the J/ψ. In the Et domain of anomalous suppression 〈p2t〉(Et) is found to rise linearly with the relative amount of anomalous suppression. This empirical law is reproduced within an analytically solvable transport model which allows high pt J/ψ's to escape anomalous suppression. Interpreted in this way, the data for 〈p2t〉(Et) lead to an estimate of tA∼4 fm/c for the duration of anomalous suppression.
