Abstract:Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) are high-performance cementitious materials that exhibit multiple cracking under uniaxial loading and self-controlled crack width less than 100 mu m, which can lead to a low permeability. Previous investigations into the rules of permeability for cracks in ECC were based on the surface crack profiles, which were not the real water flow path, and to better understand and quantify their permeability, it is necessary to establish models based on the inner crack morphology. In this study, the water flow rates of a crack in ECC were measured under various pressure gradients, and the presented water flow behavior was analyzed based on the inner crack morphology obtained from mu CT images. The results revealed that the Forchheimer's law can properly describe the transition of water flow behavior from linearity to nonlinearity with increasing pressure gradients, and the crack geometrical properties of inner crack profiles were closely related to the parameters in Forchheimer's law. Based on these findings, a new permeation prediction model for ECC was proposed.
