Abstract:Phase diagrams of two isothermal sections of the Ni–Ti–Ta ternary system at 1000 and 1200 °C in a full composition range were determined by X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The experimental results indicated a ternary compound τ phase with low solid solubility and composition ranges of (16.3–22.4) at.% Ta, (15.9–24.1) at.% Ti and (58.5–60.0) at.% Ni at 1000 °C. The two terminal solid solutions (bcc-(Ta) and β-Ti) formed a continuous solid solution at 1000 and 1200 °C. A certain amount of Ti can dissolve into Ni–Ta intermetallic compounds near the Ni–Ta side, with the highest value of 21.9 at.% observed in the Ni2Ta compound at 1000 °C.

Abstract:The isothermal section at 900°C of the Fe–Nb–Ti system was determined using the diffusion couple approach with the aid of equilibrated alloys. The specimens were examined by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. No ternary compound was found. The isothermal section consists of five single-phase regions, six two-phase regions and two three-phase regions. The solubility of Nb in TiFe were determined to be 6at.%, and the solubility of Ti in μ-Nb19Fe21 to be 23.6at.%. NbFe2 and TiFe2 form a continuous solid solution (Nb, Ti)Fe2.

Abstract:Despite the importance of Al and Ta as alloying elements for Co- and Ni-base alloys, there has been limited research on the phase equilibria in the Al-Co-Ta and Al-Ni-Ta systems. Additionally, the available data are sparse and sometimes inconsistent due to the peculiar experimental challenges of these systems. Based on that, a comprehensive and critical evaluation of their phase equilibria is useful in view of further experimental and computational studies. Within this framework, the Al-Co-Ta and Al-Ni-Ta ternary systems and the respective binary subsystems are here critically assessed. All available literature investigations are analyzed and as a result, a set of self-consistent diagrams and tables are presented, reporting crystal structure data, liquidus projections, isothermal sections, etc.

Abstract:The phase equilibria in the Fe-Nb-Ta ternary system at 1200, 1100 and 1000 °C were experimentally investigated. The microstructure of each sample was observed using scanning electron microscopy, and phase compositions were measured by energy dispersive spectrometry. The constituent phases of typical samples were analyzed with x-ray diffraction. The experimental results indicated that the continuous solid solution phases, Fe2(Nb,Ta) and Fe7(Nb,Ta)6, were formed between Fe2Nb and Fe2Ta and Fe7Nb6 and Fe7Ta6, respectively, and no ternary compounds were found in this system in these isothermal sections. Based on the experimental phase equilibria data obtained in the present work, three isothermal sections at 1200, 1100 and 1000 °C were constructed.

Abstract:The phase equilibria of the Co-Cu-Ti system at 850°C are investigated using a high-efficiency diffusion couple and six key ternary alloys. The samples are examined by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. At 850°C, no ternary compound is found. The Ti3Cu phase is a metastable phase. The solubilities of Cu in Ti 2Co, TiCo, TiCo2(c) and TiCo3 were determined to be 8.7, 35.8, 2.1, and 5.4 at.%, respectively. And the solubilities of Co in Ti2Cu, TiCu, Ti3Cu4, and TiCu2 were measured to be 6.6, 0.7, 2.4, and 10.2 at.%, respectively. The following 9 three-phase equilibria are observed: (Ti) + Ti2Co + Ti2Cu, Ti2Co + Ti2Cu + TiCo, Ti2Cu + TiCu + TiCo, TiCu + Ti3Cu4 + TiCo, Ti3Cu4 + TiCu2 + TiCo, TiCu2 + TiCo + (Cu), TiCo + TiCo 2(c) + (Cu), TiCo2(h) + TiCo3 + (Cu). and TiCo3, + (Co) + (Cu). © Carl Hanser Verlag.

Abstract:The phase equilibria in the Ni-Co rich region (<50 at.%Al) of the Al-Co-Ni system were studied experimentally for two isothermal sections at 1100 and 800 °C. Metallography, energy dispersive spectroscopy, hardness and x-ray diffraction were used for characterization and determination of γ, γ′ and β phases within the ternary system. Phase boundaries in the isothermal sections and a partial liquidus projection are modified compared to previously published work. Comparison is made to the isothermal sections computed using Thermo-Calc and the TCNI8 database. No definitive experimental evidence corroborating the predicted existence of a Nishizawa horn was obtained.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the phase diagram of the Co–Ni–Zr ternary system at 1198K has been investigated by means of diffusion triple and electron microprobe analysis. This isothermal section consists of six three-phase regions. The homogeneity ranges of Co23Zr6, Co2Zr, CoZr, Ni5Zr, Ni7Zr2 and NiZr are about 16.7%–18.8at.%Zr, 28.6%–32.3at.%Zr, 49.2%–51.7at.%Zr, 16.0%–18.7at.%Zr, 22.3%–24.1at.%Zr and 49.8%–52.1at.%Zr, respectively; CoZr2 and NiZr2 are nearly linear compounds. The largest solubilities of Ni in Co23Zr6, Co2Zr and CoZr are about 4.9at.%Ni, 5.4at.%Ni and 4.5at.%Ni, respectively. CoZr2 and NiZr2 form a continuous solid solution (Co,Ni)Zr2. No ternary compound is observed.

Abstract:The phase constituents in Ni–Al–Co–Ti quaternary alloys with compositions of Ni (18.2–90.8), Al (0–9.2), Co (16.6–83.1) and Ti (0–16.9)(wt.%) at 750°C and 1100°C have been investigated in the samples, which were prepared by mixing two base alloys (Ni-9.2wt.%Al and Co-16.9wt.%Ti). Experimental results showed that disordered fcc γ and L12 ordered γ′ phases with a fcc/L12 structure formed in the quaternary alloys heat treated in the temperature range of 750–1100°C. A partial isothermal phase diagram was plotted. The γ/γ′ two-phase structure existed continuously from Ni–Al side (Ni-9.2wt.%Al) to Co–Ti side (Co-16.9wt.%Ti). The obtained results could play an important role in the design and development of new high-temperature materials with an fcc/L12 structure.

Abstract:Sn-Co-Ni alloys of 25 different compositions have been prepared and equilibrated at 250 °C. A new ternary (Ni, Co)Sn4 phase is found, and all the binary compounds have very significant mutual solubilities between Co and Ni. According to the ternary equilibrium phase data and the constituent binary phase diagrams, the 250 °C isothermal section of the Sn-Co-Ni system is proposed. In the Sn-CoSn-Ni3Sn4 corner, there are nine two-phase regions and five tie-triangles. Interfacial reactions between molten Sn and Ni-1.0 at. pct Co, Ni-3.0 at. pct Co, Ni-5.0 at. pct Co, Ni-20.0 at. pct Co, and Ni-40.0 at. pct Co substrates are examined. It has been found that the interfacial reactions in Sn/Ni-1.0 at. pct Co are similar to those in Sn/Ni couples, and only the Ni3Sn4 phase is formed. The (Ni, Co)Sn4 phase is formed in the couples prepared with Ni-3.0 at. pct Co, Ni-5.0 at. pct Co, and Ni-20.0 at. pct Co substrates. It grows very fast and has a faceted and unique morphology.

Abstract:The liquidus surface projection and isothermal sections at 1200 and 1000 °C of the Fe-Ni-Ta system were established by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Eight primary solidification regions in the liquidus surface projection were experimentally obtained. The similar phase relations were derived in the isothermal sections at 1200 and 1000 °C. Based on the experimental results in the present work and reported in the literature, the Fe-Ni-Ta system was optimized by means of CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) method. Solution phases (liquid, fcc, bcc) were treated as the substitutional solution. The compounds Fe2Ta, Ni2Ta, Ni3Ta and NiTa2 were treated as (Fe,Ni,Ta)m(Fe,Ni,Ta)n by a two-sublattice model, and (Fe,Ni)7Ta6 was modelled as (Fe,Ni,Ta)1(Ta)4(Fe,Ni,Ta)2(Fe,Ni,Ta)6 by a four-sublattice model. A set of self-consistent thermodynamic parameters for the Fe-Ni-Ta system was acquired.

Abstract:In this work, two isothermal sections of the Co-Ta-Si ternary system at 900 °C and 1100 °C are constructed in the whole composition range via phase equilibrium determination with the help of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Firstly, several reported ternary phases G (Co16Ta6Si7), G″ (Co4TaSi3), E (CoTaSi), L (Co3Ta2Si) and V (Co4Ta4Si7) are all re-confirmed again. The G″ phase is found to be a kind of high-temperature compound, which is unstable at less than 1100 °C. Additionally, the L phase with a large composition range (Co32-62Ta26-36Si10-30) crystallizes with a hexagonal crystal structure (space group: P63/mmc, C14), which is the same as that of the binary high-temperature λ1-Co2Ta phase. It can be reasonably speculated that the ternary L phase results from the stabilization toward low-temperature of the binary λ1-Co2Ta through adding Si. Secondly, the binary CoTa2 and SiTa2 phases are found to form a continuous solid solution phase (Co, Si)Ta2 with a body-centered tetragonal structure. Thirdly, the elemental Si shows a large solid solubility for Co-Ta binary compounds while the Ta and Co are hardly dissolved in Co-Si and Ta-Si binary phases, respectively.

Abstract:The Co–Fe–Nb materials system is a crucial material for magnetic applications. Despite its importance, the phase equilibria and thermodynamic characteristics of this ternary system have not been explored in detail. This study employs the Calphad method to model the phase equilibria of the Co–Fe–Nb ternary system. To obtain the ternary interaction parameters, the experimental data on the isothermal sections at temperatures ranging from 700 °C to 1300 °C was evaluated. These findings indicate that the Co–Fe–Nb system contains no ternary compound, and the (Co,Fe) 7 Nb 6 phase exists as a single solid solution. Significant solubility of the third element in the binary compounds of Co 2 Nb (Laves C14) and Fe 2 Nb (Laves C15) is also observed. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, a liquidus projection of the system is presented, for the first time, revealing eight primary solidification phases in the Co–Fe–Nb ternary system.

Abstract:The isothermal section of the Ni-Sn-Zn ternary system at 500°C was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS). A new ternary compound with a composition of Ni36Sn42Zn22 (in at.%) was discovered in the present study. The space group of this compound is P \( \overline{\textit{4}}\) 3m with lattice parameter a = 0.88283(4) nm. Two ternary phases, i.e., τ1 and τ2, which are derived from α′-Ni3Sn2 and β-NiZn, respectively, were observed to be present at 500°C. The solubility of Sn in Ni2Zn11 was determined to be about 3.5 at.%, and that of Zn in Ni3Sn to be about 5 at.%.

Abstract:Knowledge associated with the alloying effects of Al, Ti, Ta and Nb on phase stability of Ni-Co-based superalloys plays a significant role in efficiently exploring the multi-component space for future alloy designs, and thus were systematically investigated using a high-throughput dual-anneal multi-component diffusion multiple (MCDM) approach. In this work, η phase presenting considerably different morphology and spatial distribution was confirmed in the Ta-rich and Nb-rich alloys, and its zero-phase-fraction (ZPF) line at 800 °C was determined that suggests a maximum Nb + Ta content of about 2.5 at.% while avoiding the η formation. The composition criterion regarding the stability of η was updated by taking into account the destabilizing effect of Co such that the η formation can be significantly suppressed with increasing Co from a critical level of about 12 at.%, providing essential guidance to design alloy chemistry for superior microstructural stability at high-temperature service conditions.

Abstract:The isothermal section at 950°C of the Co–Nb–Ti system was investigated using diffusion couples and six ternary alloys. The specimens were examined by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. No ternary compound was found. Nine three-phase equilibria were observed. The binary intermediate phases NbCo3 and Nb2Co7, the existence of which is still controversial in the literature, were observed at 950°C. The solubilities of Ti in Nb2Co7, NbCo3, λ-NbCo2 and μ-Nb6Co7 were determined to be 1.9, 16.4, 14.4 and 17.4at.%, respectively. The solubilities of Nb in TiCo3, TiCo2(h), TiCo2(c), TiCo and Ti2Co were determined to be about 5.7, 11.0, 2.6, 13.6 and 3.1at.%, respectively.
