Abstract:As a natural fluorescent material, the fluorescent property and mechanism of lignin were elusive until now, which hindered the high value application of lignin fluorescence. Herein, we firstly probed the previous studies on lignin fluorescence and the results indicated that lignin microstructure was an important factor for its complex fluorescence property because of fluorophore interaction and aggregation behavior. Following the rules, lignin fluorescence was explored by analyzing its aggregation fluorescence behaviors and basic fluorescence properties based on the theory of traditional conjugated luminescence and aggregation-induced emission. It was demonstrated that intermicellar aggregation of loose lignin micelle made no substantial effect on lignin fluorescence, while intramicellar aggregation could induce the enhancement of lignin fluorescence before the micellar compactness exceeded a critical value. Combined with the physicochemical structures and fluorescence properties of lignin, aggregation-induced conjugation from phenylpropane units was believed as the main sources of the visible emission of lignin and different phenylpropane aggregates consequently formed the multi-fluorophore system in lignin micelle. Furthermore, lignin aggregation fluorescence behavior has great potential in its microstructure analysis and a case study of pH/ionic strength-induced solution behavior analysis was presented. This work provided a totally new prospective for lignin fluorescence.

Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:Over recent decades, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) molecules have attracted increasing attention. Restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR) has been widely accepted as the cause of the emission when AIE molecules aggregate into clusters. The intramolecular rotation of AIE molecules can be monitored by molecular vibration spectra such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared, and Raman, especially surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) which has high sensitivity down to a single molecule. We employed SERS and NMR to study the AIE emission mechanism and compared experimental results with simulation data to monitor the RIR. Interestingly, we found that intramolecular rotation was also restricted for individual AIE molecules loaded onto SERS substrate surfaces due to the laid-down configuration.
Effect of microstructure-scale features on lignin fluorescence for preparation of high fluorescence efficiency lignin-based nanomaterials

Abstract:As a natural fluorescent material, the practical application of lignin fluorescence was hindered due to the low fluorescence quantum yield (QY). Inspired by its aggregation fluorescence behavior, the effect of microstructure-scale on lignin fluorescence was studied from two levels, the molecular weight and colloidal sphere. It was demonstrated that with the decrease of lignin microstructure-scale, the non-radiative dissipation and reabsorption effect of lignin fluorescence would be weak, resulting in high emission efficiency. On this basis, hydrogenolysis was used to obtain small molecular fragments and reduce content of reabsorbing groups of lignin, of which the QY was greatly increased by 35 times to about 12%. In addition, the emission peak of lignin was the fluorescence addition of its main structural units. The long-wavelength emission peak was often the illusion from the reabsorption effect but not duo to the formation of conjugated structure. This work provided a potential method for the preparation of high QY lignin and an in-depth understanding of lignin fluorescence.

Abstract:Organic solid-state luminescence materials with aggregation-induced emission enhancement have attracted considerable interest in recent years. In this work, we develop a class of 2,7-diphenylfluorenone derivatives that exhibit prominent aggregation-induced emission properties with high solid-state quantum yields. Their solid-state powders show a ∼160 nm bathochromically shifted fluorescence and longer lifetime compared to their emission in dilute THF solution. The X-ray single structures and photophysical properties reveal that the mechanism of aggregation-induced emission in this class of fluorenone compounds is due to the formation of static excimers through hydrogen bonds in the solid state. The emission of their THF solution peaked at 380 nm and originates from the single molecule and the emission of their solid-state powder peaked at 550 nm originates from the excimers. The aggregation-induced emission properties and luminescence mechanism are further verified by the design of 2,7-diphenylfluorenone-diboronic acid adduct, which exhibited weak luminescence in high pH buffer and red-shifted strong luminescence in acidic buffer.

Abstract:A group of organic chromophoric molecules including siloles, pyrans, tetraphenylethylenes and fulvenes, are designed and synthesized. Light emissions of conventional luminescent materials are often quenched by aggregate formation. These molecules, however, become stronger luminophors when aggregated although they are practically nonemissive in their dilute solutions. By varying their packing structures in the aggregation states, emission color ranging from blue to red can be achieved. The emission of falvenes can also be controlled by changing their morphology. While they emit a faint light in the amorphous state, their crystal forms are strongly luminescent. Intermolecular interaction or restriction of intramolecular rotation in different states may be responsible for such behaviors. Thanks to such effects, the molecules can be employed as sensors for the detection of explosives, organic solvent vapors, solution pH, and biomacromolecules. Further modification of their structures by molecular engineering endeavors may generate materials that can find an array of applications in optical display systems and as biological probes.

Abstract:Nanomaterials that show aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have tremendous potential in sensors, bioimaging, phototherapy and organic light-emitting diodes. Although big progress have been achieved in developing AIE nanomaterials and their applications, one downside of most previously described AIE nanomaterials is that they required the complicated organic synthesis of precursor molecules and several preparative steps. Here, a biomass material, cellulolytic enzyme lignin (CEL), was used to prepare AIE nanoparticles (CEL-NPs) by a simple one-step self-assembly method. The J-aggregates were formed in CEL-NPs, which were shown to be the reason for fluorescence emission. The fluorescence of CEL-NPs demonstrated temperature-dependent property and better resistance to photobleaching than that of commercially available 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) dye. Abstract:The fluorescence of traditional organic optical functional materials usually weakens or quenches in condensed state which greatly limits the practical use of these materials.The compounds with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property can modulate the intensity of the fluorescence by adjusting the molecular constituents, structure and stack morphology, which makes up the shortcomings of traditional optical functional materials, and greatly expands the scope of practical applications, such as light-emitting diodes, solid laser, chemo/bio-sensors etc.This article focuses on the mechanisms for the AIE phenomenon, such as restricted intramolecular rotation, restricted intramolecular vibrations, restricted intramolecular motion, intramolecular coplanarization and J-aggregation.In addition, some AIE systems were studied based on the composition and structure of molecules.

Abstract:Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic pyrazine luminogens with "free" (1) and "locked" (2) phenyl rings were readily prepared in high yields. The propeller-shaped luminogen 1 shows aggregation-induced emission feature, whereas the disk-shaped chromophore 2 shows conventional aggregation-caused quenching effect, offering a direct evidence to support our hypothesis that restriction of intramolecular rotation is the main cause for the AIE phenomenon.

Abstract:Fluorescent materials have gained extensive attention owing to their highly photophysical properties and potential applications in diverse areas. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a new type of photophysical phenomenon discovered in 2001, in which molecules in condensed solution or solid state exhibit enhanced fluorescence emission. In this chapter, we aim to cover the developments in the exciting field of AIE over the past decade, including organic luminescent molecules and clusteroluminogens, of which clusteroluminogens are highlighted. The fluorescence mechanism is one of the most important concepts within the scientific community. Therefore, we systematically summarize the latest research achievements on the luminescence mechanism of AIE-based fluorescent systems.

Abstract:The mechanism of aggregation-induced emission, which overcomes the common aggregation-caused quenching problem in organic optoelectronics, is revealed by monitoring the real time structural evolution and dynamics of electronic excited state with frequency and polarization resolved ultrafast UV/IR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The formation of Woodward-Hoffmann cyclic intermediates upon ultraviolet excitation is observed in dilute solutions of tetraphenylethylene and its derivatives but not in their respective solid. The ultrafast cyclization provides an efficient nonradiative relaxation pathway through crossing a conical intersection. Without such a reaction mechanism, the electronic excitation is preserved in the molecular solids and the molecule fluoresces efficiently, aided by the very slow intermolecular charge and energy transfers due to the well separated molecular packing arrangement. The mechanisms can be general for tuning the properties of chromophores in different phases for various important applications.

Abstract:It is found that the fluorescence of aliphatic poly(amido amine)s including linear and hyperbranched ones can be dramatically enhanced by simple aggregation of polymer chains, attributing to the formation of a variety of intra- and interchain clusters with shared lone-pair electrons and the restriction of intramolecular motions. Thanks to the combination of strong solid fluorescence and excellent biocompatibility, these non-conjugated polymers become promising candidates for bioimaging such as bacterial detection. This finding not only extends the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems from conjugated compounds to non-conjugated materials, which expands the bioapplication range of AIE systems, but also sheds light on the exploration of novel unconventional luminogens.

Abstract:Over the past decade, research studies on solid-state luminescent materials featuring aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have achieved great success. It has been proved that lots of planar ACQ (aggregation-caused quenching) chromophores can be converted to AIE luminogens (AIEgens) by combining with an AIE-active unit such as tetraphenylethene (TPE). In this work, we present a new method to create AIE luminogens just by introducing benzoyl or benzyl to a planar chromophore, pyrene. The generated 1-benzoyl and 1-benzyl pyrene derivatives exhibit weak emission when molecularly dissolved in good solvents but strong emission from pyrene dimers when aggregated in poor solvent or the solid state. Their crystal structure analysis and theoretical calculations are performed to depict the working mechanism of these new AIEgens. The results show that the structural rigidification of these 1-benzoyl pyrene derivatives is the major cause for their AIE effect. This new AIE system along with a clear working mechanism will contribute to the development of AIE-related functional materials and theories.

Abstract:The strong light emission of organic luminogens in the aggregated state is essential to their applications as optoelectronic materials with good performance. In this review, with respect to the aggregation‐induced emission and room‐temperature phosphorescence luminogens, the important role of molecular packing modes is highlighted. As demonstrated in the selected examples, the molecular packing status in the aggregate state is affected by many factors, including the molecular configurations, the inherent electronic properties, the special functional groups, and so on. With the consideration of all these parameters, the strong fluorescence and phosphorescence in the aggregated state could be achieved in the rationally designed organic luminogens, providing some guidance for the further development.

Abstract:Simple modification of triphenylamine generates four luminophores with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. Three of them can be smartly switched in fluorescence emissions by various external stimuli such as grinding, annealing and solvent-fuming, which may be attributed to the transformation from the crystalline state to the amorphous state and vice versa.

Abstract:Since the introduction of the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in 2001, many research groups have become involved in AIE research. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have emerged as a novel type of advanced material with excellent performance in various fields. Much effort has been devoted to determining the AIE mechanism(s) by theoreticians and experimentalists. Restriction of intramolecular motion has been recognized as the general working mechanism of AIE, but the mechanims of some AIE systems still remain unclear. In this focus article, the progress of the fundamental understanding of the AIE mechanism is reviewed and the future developments in AIE research are discussed. The goal is to provide a brief yet insightful introduction and interpretation of the subject to both new and experienced AIE researchers.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds, dye2 and dye3, with a rotatable N–N single bond and aza-crown-ether, have been synthesized. The fluorescence intensities of both dyes are very weak in THF, while become extraordinarily strong in a mixture of H2O–THF (v/v 95%). They are increased by 88.9 and 70.7 times, respectively, indicating enhanced blue-green fluorescence emissions. The λem of these two compounds in different states has been well studied. Besides this, dye1 and dye2 were characterized by single crystal X-ray structural determination. The results show that molecular interactions are formed in the particles, which considerably restrict the intramolecular vibration and rotation.

Abstract:The molecular aggregation behavior is closely related to a variety of metabolism in cells, such as the formation of spot during cell senescence, and the aggregation behavior of amyloid beta-protein in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Quantitative study over molecular aggregation effects is essential for studying weak interactions between biomolecules, and the nucleation of molecular aggregates. At present, the research on the formation process of molecular oligomers in the initial stage of aggregation effect is still in the infancy. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) provides an intuitive and convenient strategy for studying molecular aggregation process. However, due to the difficulty of fine control of the aggregation process, it is still a huge challenge to quantitatively describe the relationship between the number of aggregated molecules and its luminescence property. According to the different forces that form molecular oligomers, this review divides the current methods of constructing fluorescent molecular oligomers into the following four categories: chemical bond formation, host-guest interaction, DNA confinement and micro-nano spatial confinement. Furthermore, this review discusses the relationship between molecule number and its luminescence behaviors. Through this review, it is expected to promote the quantitative study of the luminescence properties of AIE molecular oligomers and bring some enlightenment to the study of the mechanism of molecular nucleation process.
