Abstract:Recent development in miniaturized electronic devices has been boosting the demand for power sources that are sufficiently thin, flexible/bendable, and even tailorable and can potentially be integrated in a package with other electronic components. Reduced graphene oxide can be a promising electrode material for miniaturized microsuperca pacitors due to their excellent electrical conductivity, high surface-to-volume ratio, out - standing intrinsic electrochemical double-layer capacitance, and facile production in large scale and low cost. Therefore, the routes to produce high-quality reduced graphene oxide as electrode materials, along with the typical fabrication techniques for miniatur ized electrodes, are deliberately discussed in this chapter. Furthermore, breakthroughs in the area of the advanced packaging technology, deciding the electrochemical perfor mance and stability of these miniaturized microsupercapacitors, are highlighted. Lastly, a summary of the overall electrochemical properties and current development of the reported devices is presented progressively to provide insights into the development of novel miniaturized energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Abstract The current development trend towards miniaturized portable electronic devices has significantly increased the demand for ultrathin, flexible and sustainable on-chip micro-supercapacitors that have enormous potential to complement, or even to replace, micro-batteries and electrolytic capacitors. In this regard, graphene-based micro-supercapacitors with a planar geometry are promising micro-electrochemical energy-storage devices that can take full advantage of planar configuration and unique features of graphene. This review summarizes the latest advances in on-chip graphene-based planar interdigital micro-supercapacitors, from the history of their development, representative graphene-based materials (graphene sheets, graphene quantum dots and graphene hybrids) for their manufacture, typical microfabrication strategies (photolithography techniques, electrochemical methods, laser writing, etc.), electrolyte (aqueous, organic, ionic and gel), to device configuration (symmetric and asymmetric). Finally, the perspectives and possible development directions of future graphene-based micro-supercapacitors are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The development of miniaturized energy storage components with high areal performance for emerging electronics depends on scalable fabrication techniques for thick electrodes and an in‐depth understanding of the intrinsic properties of materials. Based on the coprecipitation behavior of electrically exfoliated graphene and reduced graphene oxide–templated polyaniline (PANi) nanoflake, this work develops a simple, green, low‐cost, and scalable drop‐casted technique to easily fabricate uniform thick electrodes (up to 80 μm) on various substrates. Through using a direct laser writing process, planar microsupercapacitors can be readily attained. As‐fabricated flexible all‐solid‐state microsupercapacitors exhibit an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 172 mF cm−2 at 0.1 A cm−2 and excellent cycling stability of 91% capacitance retention over 2000 cycles at a high current density of 1.0 A cm−2. Furthermore, based on the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance research result, the pseudocapacitance contribution is mostly provided by the adsorption/desorption of SO42− anions during the protonation process of PANi. This work offers a simple strategy toward superior‐performance micro‐sized energy devices and a new perspective to understand the origin of the capacitance of composites and heterostructures.

Abstract:With the development of wearable/flexible electronics, a formidable challenge is to integrate electronic components which were large in their original size into a flexible, thin, and arbitrary layout. As an indispensible component in electronics, commercial micro-supercapacitors are disadvantageous in their clumsy cuboid geometry and limited capacity, and are not promising for future applications. In comparison, film-like micro-supercapacitors are superior in miniaturized system integration since they can be folded to fit in restricted spaces while maintaining a high level of volumetric energy density. Here, we carried out a benchmark study of a state-of-the-art well-packaged thin film micro-supercapacitor toward commercial micro-supercapacitor and aluminum electrolyte capacitor. The micro-planar supercapacitor not only exhibits 3.75 times of a commercial micro-supercapacitor and 8785 times of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor in volumetric energy density under 1000mVs−1 scan rate, but can also be tailored into diversified shapes, rolled up, and plugged into tiny interstitial spaces inside a device. Such ultrathin (18µm) micro-supercapacitor component with high volumetric energy density (0.98mWhcm−3 in LiCl-PVA gel, 5.7mWhcm−3 in ionic liquid), can be integrated into an electronic device system and shows a series of superior performance characteristics over current commercial benchmarks, which may find vast applications.

Abstract:: The rapid development of micro-electronic equipment has put forward new requirements for multifunctional and miniaturized energy storage devices. Among them, micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) have received widespread attention because of the advantages of long cycle life and fast charge and discharge. As excellent electronic conductor, graphene has high specific surface area and good ductility, showing wide application prospects in micro-supercapacitors. Among the various preparation methods of graphene-based micro-supercapacitors, laser direct writing technology with the features of inexpensive, flexible and fast, sacrificing-free templates and complicated follow-up processing is an efficient and quickly integrated processing method. To this end, we review the research progress of laser direct write graphene-based micro supercapacitors, including the advantages of laser construction of miniature energy storage devices, typical laser direct writing graphene supercapacitors and their electrode materials, and micro-device configuration assembly (symmetrical and asymmetrical). Meanwhile, the future development trends and challenges of laser direct writing graphene-based micro-supercapacitors are also presented.

Abstract:The miniaturization of portable electronic devices has fueled the development of microsupercapacitors that hold great potential to complement or even to replace microbatteries and electrolytic capacitors. In spite of recent development taking advantage of printing and lithography, it remains a great challenge to attain high energy density without sacrificing power density. Herein, a new protocol mimicking the spider's spinning process is developed to create highly oriented microfibers from graphene-based composite via a purpose-designed microfluidic chip. The orientation provides the microfibers with electrical conductivity ~3×104 S m-1, which leads to high power density; the energy density is sustained by nanocarbon and high-purity metallic molybdenum disulfide. The microfibers are patterned in-plane to fabricate asymmetric microsupercapacitors for flexible and on-chip energy storage. The on-chip microsupercapacitor with a high pattern resolution of 100 micrometer, delivers energy density up to the order of 10-2 Wh cm-3 and retains ultra-high power density exceeding 100 W cm-3 in aqueous electrolyte. This work provides new design of flexible and on-chip asymmetric microsupercapacitors based on microfibers. The unique biomimetic microfluidic fabrication of graphene microfibers for energy storage may also stimulate thinking of the bionic design in many other fields.

Abstract:Energy conversion and storage devices play an important role in industry and society with the rapid growth of energy consumption. Supercapacitors are very attractive due to their superior power density, fast charge/discharge rates and long cycle lifetime. Graphene fiber (GF), a fascinating material, has drawn considerable attention and shown great potential as an active material in the field of supercapacitors owing to its unique and tunable nanostructure, high electrical conductivity, excellent mechanical flexibility, light weight, and ease of functionalization. This review focuses on the recent significant advances in the fabrication and application of graphene-based fiber as electrode material in supercapacitors. The synthetic strategies and application in the supercapacitor are presented, accompanied with the summary and outlook for the future development of GFs.

Abstract:Micro-supercapacitors hold great promise for powering the Internet of Things devices owing to their high power density and long cycling life. However, the limited energy density hinders their practical use. Electrode materials play an important role in the performance of micro-supercapacitors. With the advantages of a large specific surface area and a high electrical conductivity, graphene has been considered a good candidate for the electrode material of micro-supercapacitors. The two-dimensional surface of graphene is parallel to the direction of transport of the electrolyte ions for micro-supercapacitors with an in-plane structure, which helps improve the ion accessibility of the electrodes. Therefore, the construction of graphene-based in-plane micro-supercapacitors has aroused great interest among researchers. Here, we summarize the recent advances in graphene and graphene-based materials for in-plane micro-supercapacitors from the perspective of electrode material design. The electrode materials include graphenes produced by chemical vapor deposition, liquid-phase exfoliation, reduction of graphene oxide, laser induction and heteroatom doping, as well as graphene-based composites, such as carbon nanotube/graphene, transition metal oxide/graphene, conducting polymer/graphene and two-dimensional material/graphene composites. Challenges and opportunities in graphene-based in-plane micro-supercapacitors are discussed, and future research directions and development trends are proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Micro-supercapacitors are promising miniaturized energy storage devices that have attracted considerable research interest. However, their widespread use is limited by inefficient microfabrication technologies and their low energy density. Here, a flexible, designable micro-supercapacitor can be fabricated by a single pulse laser photonic-reduction stamping. A thousand spatially shaped laser pulses can be generated in one second, and over 30,000 micro-supercapacitors are produced within 10 minutes. The micro-supercapacitor and narrow gaps were dozens of microns and 500 nm, respectively. With the unique three-dimensional structure of laser-induced graphene based electrode, a single micro-supercapacitor exhibits an ultra-high energy density (0.23 Wh cm −3 ), an ultra-small time constant (0.01 ms), outstanding specific capacitance (128 mF cm −2 and 426.7 F cm −3 ) and a long-term cyclability. The unique technique is desirable for a broad range of applications, which surmounts current limitations of high-throughput fabrication and low energy density of micro-supercapacitors.

Abstract:<p>With the development of wearable, portable, and implantable electronic devices, flexible and on‐chip microsupercapacitors (MSCs) are urgently needed for miniaturized energy storage. Planar MSCs have high power density, fast charge/discharge rate, and long operating lifetime, and can adapt to future flexible, integrated, and miniaturized electronic systems for wide application foreground. Due to the high specific surface area, outstanding electrical conductivity, and excellent electron mobility, graphene shows promising advantages in planar MSCs devices, thus stimulates wide‐ranging research in the last few years. Herein, the recent progress of planar graphene‐based MSCs, including the intrinsic structure regulation of graphene‐based electrode materials, the specific fabrication techniques, the multifunctional integration, and various applications of MSCs as flexible and on‐chip energy storage is systematically summarized. The key challenges and prospects of future planar graphene‐based MSCs are also discussed targeting to realize their practical applications.</p>

Abstract:Microscale supercapacitors provide an important complement to batteries in a variety of applications, including portable electronics. Although they can be manufactured using a number of printing and lithography techniques 1 , 2 , 3 , continued improvements in cost, scalability and form factor are required to realize their full potential. Here, we demonstrate the scalable fabrication of a new type of all-carbon, monolithic supercapacitor by laser reduction and patterning of graphite oxide films. We pattern both in-plane and conventional electrodes consisting of reduced graphite oxide with micrometre resolution, between which graphite oxide serves as a solid electrolyte 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 . The substantial amounts of trapped water in the graphite oxide makes it simultaneously a good ionic conductor and an electrical insulator, allowing it to serve as both an electrolyte and an electrode separator with ion transport characteristics similar to that observed for Nafion membranes 10 , 11 . The resulting micro-supercapacitor devices show good cyclic stability, and energy storage capacities comparable to existing thin-film supercapacitors 1 .

Engineering three-dimensional hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors for high-performance integrated energy storage

Abstract:Supercapacitors now play an important role in the progress of hybrid and electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and military and space applications. There is a growing demand in developing hybrid supercapacitor systems to overcome the energy density limitations of the current generation of carbon-based supercapacitors. Here, we demonstrate 3D high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors based on graphene and MnO2 by rationally designing the electrode microstructure and combining active materials with electrolytes that operate at high voltages. This results in hybrid electrodes with ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of over 1,100 F/cm(3). This corresponds to a specific capacitance of the constituent MnO2 of 1,145 F/g, which is close to the theoretical value of 1,380 F/g. The energy density of the full device varies between 22 and 42 Wh/l depending on the device configuration, which is superior to those of commercially available double-layer supercapacitors, pseudocapacitors, lithium-ion capacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors tested under the same conditions and is comparable to that of lead acid batteries. These hybrid supercapacitors use aqueous electrolytes and are assembled in air without the need for expensive "dry rooms" required for building today's supercapacitors. Furthermore, we demonstrate a simple technique for the fabrication of supercapacitor arrays for high-voltage applications. These arrays can be integrated with solar cells for efficient energy harvesting and storage systems.

The devices exhibit high performance, with a volumetric device capacitance up to 17.8 F cm−3. With a simple fabrication process and robust tolerance to mechanical deformation, this work represents a promising technology for low-cost, portable, and flexible energy storage.

Abstract:Carbon is a key component in current electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices and plays a crucial role in the improvement in energy and power densities for the future EES devices. As the simplest carbon and the basic unit of all sp 2 carbons, graphene is widely used in EES devices because of its fascinating and outstanding physicochemical properties; however, when assembled in the macroscale, graphene-derived materials do not demonstrate their excellence as individual sheets mostly because of unavoidable stacking. This review proposal shows to engineer graphene nanosheets from the nano- to the macroscale in a well-designed and controllable way and discusses how the performance of the graphene-derived carbons depends on the individual graphene sheets, nanostructures, and macrotextures. Graphene-derived carbons in EES applications are comprehensively reviewed with three representative devices, supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and lithium–sulfur batteries. The review concludes with a comment on the opportunities and challenges for graphene-derived carbons in the rapidly growing EES research area. Graphical Abstract
