Abstract:The Semantic Grid commonly refers to a branch subject under the umbrella of Grid Computing. In a typical semantic grid application, the network resources and services are described in a meaningful way so that the resources can be discovered, aggregated, joined up more readily and automatically. The description typically draws upon the technology from the Semantic Web, such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Web Ontology Language (OWL). In this chapter an overview to the background of the Semantic Grid is given.

Abstract:This paper proposes the concept of extension knowledge space(EKS),builds the corresponding operations for EKS,and then establishes the models of semantic web of extension knowledge space(SWEKS)and extension knowledge grid(EKG)based on EKS.We analyze the construction processes of these models in detail.A series of corresponding problems is also discussed,for example,the computing method for correlative function of EKS,corresponding actions of EKS operations in SWEKS and EKG services etc.They have great significance for large scale extension problem computing.

Abstract:The emerging grid infrastructure presents many challenging security issues that demand new access approach due to its inherent heterogeneity, multidomain characteristic and highly dynamic nature. In order to protect the secure sharing and coordinated use of diverse resources in distributed "virtual organizations", fine-grained access control in grid computing is therefore very necessary and important. In this paper, a semantic-aware access conrtol(SAAC) extending the RBAC with the semantic specification is proposed. Supplying semantic specification by the implementation of semantic inference engine (SIE), the administration for the applicability of users' role memberships to particular permissions is much more easy and precise. The enforcement of the SAAC model for grid application is presented. An experimental evaluation of its overheads is also described.

Abstract:The grid technology is expected to have the ability of resolving the problem of large-scale information resources sharing in virtual organizations, which deliver a number of grid services to publish large-scale information to end-users. We propose an intelligent client to grid services, which manipulate information resources at semantic level and provides end-users with a universal and intuitive semantic view for various grid services. With a series of semantic plug-ins in semantic browser, end-users can gain richer interaction with grid services and resolve complex domain problems in a more intuitive and friendly environment.

Abstract:Grid computing is becoming a new computing infrastructure for large-scale scientific computation and cooperative work. The Globus toolkit is the most popular grid environment and de facto grid standard, and it has adopted OGSA architecture to provide applications with grid service level. This study focuses on the requirement for scientists in engineering computation field and narrows the gap between grid service and the engineering community. The engineering computation architecture supplies the users with a visual application development and deployment environment for engineering computation. The whole is characterized by grid service. At the same time, QoS driven user-centric scheduling, community-based efficient authorization and flexible task management are designed and implemented.

Abstract:Grid computing technology is a focused field in high performance computing. This paper describes an engineering computation oriented visual grid framework VGrid, which is capable to bridge the gap between currently deployed grid services and the computational applications. Based on the Globus toolkit, and coupled with a client component, a services pool and a server component, VGrid visually performs resource discovery, task schedule, and result processing. VGrid improves the efficiency of utilization of resources by introducing a logical resource concept. VGrid applications of numerical simulations in engineering sciences are demonstrated.

Abstract:ITSGrid is an undergoing joint engineering project designed and developed by advanCed Computing aNd sysTem (CCNT) Lab in Zhejiang University and Hangzhou Enjoyor Electronics Co. Ltd (Enjoyor). The new features of ITSGrid are originated from two important research projects -- DartGrid and DartFlow, and one key engineering project -- JTang Application Server, in CCNT Lab. Its goal is to build an integrated intelligent transportation information and service platform (ITISP), to integrate traffic data resources collected by Enjoyor and cooperate existing ITS subsystems and services deployed by Enjoyor, finally serve for transportation construction in China. During building this project, we utilize systematically the Grid technology, the Semantic Web technology, the Web Service technology, the Messaging Oriented Middleware technology.

Abstract:Inter-organization collaboration is recently acknowledged as an important vision of the grid research, however there are not many well implemented system and not many applications that are in large-scale real use either. This paper present a VO(Virtual Organization) Ontology Model Framework that simplifies the Inter-organization collaboration of the future grids. Thanks to the semantic technology, we can develop semantic based model framework to implement interoperability even in heterogeneous environments. The framework, consisted of a bunch of ontologies, definitely defines and describes which attributes of the VOs should define. We define and implement the semantic model of Virtual Organizations and Grid Resources and introduce the basic concepts and mechanisms to represent them and apply them to the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CATCM). The prototype presented in this paper is also applicable to other VO application projects.

Abstract:The task of improving the semantic interoperability of distributed data sources is one of the focuses in Semantic Grid research. For integrating and sharing scientific data in materials science, this paper proposes a semantic model for materials scientific data and an ontology-based data integration method. The semantic model covers the key factors in materials science and is considered as the global conceptual model. In the method, Mapping ontology and data source description ontology are designed to represent the two types of mappings formally. Furthermore, the architecture and query process are also presented. The experimental prototype is implemented to show the usefulness of the method in heterogeneous data environment for materials science.

Abstract:A toolkit called DartGrid using technologies from either semantic Web or grid is introduced. It is build upon Globus Toolkit and uses RDF-based ontology to integrate heterogeneous relational databases. Technically, database resources are exposed as grid services and organized as an ontology-based virtual organization. By uniformly defined domain semantics, data resources are semantically registered to an semantic registration service and seamlessly integrated together to provide unified semantic query and semantic search service. Furthermore, a set of semantic tools are developed to raise the level of interaction with the system to a semantic level. A visual mapping tool is offered to help data provider to define semantic mapping from relational schema to shared ontology. A visual query tool which can automatically generated query interface based on ontology definitions, is provided to help specify complex semantic queries. A search-engine-like interface is offered to enable quickly search and semantically navigate data from one database to another database. DartGrid is a deployed system that currently provides query and search service at China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine .

Abstract:Metadata is the information that describes the most important feature of an object. In recent years, metadata plays a more and more important role in data intensive applications. In this paper, we propose a semantic metadata catalog service, Semantic MCS. Semantic MCS has a well-organized data management model and supports the query mechanism using Ontology inference. Furthermore, we discuss the main problems that we met in real Grid applications. We propose a framework of metadata interoperation to resolve the problem of the services interoperability. And we propose a dynamic framework for metadata management for the rapid changing metadata in Grid.

Abstract:This paper describes a preliminary attempt at weaving a Semantic Grid for multidisciplinary collaborative design over the internet. An ontology-based service-oriented modelling approach is proposed for distributed management of multidisciplinary design knowledge, through which, various Grid services for distributed applications are annotated with domain resource ontology to facilitate their autonomous deployment, reuse and federation in multidisciplinary collaborative design in a meaningful and flexible way. A service-oriented multi-agent system architecture is laid out in the peer-to-peer network of a distributed, scalable, semantic service registry to address, in an open, decentralised and loosely coupled manner, the life cycle of multidisciplinary collaborative design activities involved in publishing, discovering and reusing various Grid services efficiently. An intelligent service-oriented workflow planner equipped with an ontology- and rule-based problem-solving strategy is devised to support the users in constructing the workflow of a complex engineering design process from existing multidisciplinary design resources automatically, utilising their semantic descriptions. An example in applying the proposed approach to a multidisciplinary collaborative design of metal stamping progressive die is presented to illustrate the potential application of the workflow planner in the Semantic Grid.

Abstract:Based on Semantic Web technology and OGSA architecture, we propose a Semantic Rule Service Model to enable intelligence on grid. In this model, we regard rules and inference engines as resources, and employ rule base services and inference services to encapsulate them to do inference on ontology knowledge. With the support of OGSA architecture, we organize the services as grid services in order to support the dynamic discovery and invocation of the rules and inference engines. The function of this model is to provide intelligent support to other grid services and software agents. In addition, we illustrate the application of this model in an application of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system.
