Abstract:Core-shell structured Fe(3)O(4)/SiO(2)/TiO(2) nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic activity that are capable of fast magnetic separation have been successfully synthesized by combining two steps of a sol-gel process with calcination. The as-obtained core-shell structure is composed of a central magnetite core with a strong response to external fields, an interlayer of SiO(2), and an outer layer of TiO(2,) nanocrystals with a tunable average size. The convenient control over the size and crystallinity of the TiO(2) nanocatalysts makes it possible to achieve higher photocatalytic efficiency than that of commercial photocatalyst Degussa P25. The photocatalytic activity increases as the thickness of the TiO(2,) nanocrystal shell decreases. The presence of SiO(2),interlayer helps to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO(2),nanocrystal shell as well as the chemical and thermal stability of Fe(3)O(4) core. In addition, the TiO(2),nanocrystals strongly adhere to the magnetic supports through covalent bonds. We demonstrate that this photocatalyst can be easily recycled by applying an external magnetic field while maintaining their photocatalytic activity during at least eighteen cycles of use.

Abstract:Core-shell nanophotocatalysts consisting of superparamagnetic cores and functional shells are intriguing in environmental remediation and biology. A few Fe3O4@TiO2 particles have been developed in previous research studies, while most of them show a submicron-scale size and thick SiO2 interlayers. Herein, we present a facile approach to prepare small Fe3O4@TiO2 with a unique yolk-shell structure below 50 nm, in which most of the SiO2 interlayers have been simultaneously etched off during synthesis. The prepared photocatalysts have been characterized by TEM, XRD, BET and VSM, and a formation mechanism is proposed. Controllable thickness of the TiO2 shell has been achieved and its effect on their photocatalytic activities has also been investigated. These small yolk-shell Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles are expected to be applied in a variety of fields due to their low density, high surface area, superparamagnetic behavior and good photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A magnetically separable photocatalyst TiO2/SiO2/NiFe2O4 (TSN) nanosphere with egg-like structure was prepared by a unique process that combined a liquid catalytic phase transformation method, reverse micelle technique and chemical precipitation means. The prepared photocatalyst shows high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange in water. The magnetic property measurements indicate that the photocatalyst possesses a superparamagnetic nature. It can be separated from water when an external magnetic field is added and redispersed into water solution after the external magnetic field is eliminated. It is one of the promising photocatalysts for wastewater treatment. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an x-ray diffractometer (XRD) were used to characterize the structure of the TSN photocatalyst. The results indicate that nickel ferrite core nanoparticles were completely encapsulated into monodisperse silica nanospheres as carrier, and titania nanoparticle aggregates were coated onto the surface of SN nanospheres, forming an imperfect TiO2 shell for photocatalysis. The SiO2 layer between the NiFe2O4 core and the TiO2 shell effectively prevents the injection of charges from TiO2 particles to NiFe2O4, which gives rise to an increase in photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the recycled TSN exhibits good repeatability of the photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel sonochemical method is described for the preparation of Fe3O4-TiO2 photocatalysts in which nanocrystalline titanium dioxide particles are directly coated onto a magnetic core. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were partially embedded in TiO2 agglomerates. TiO2 nanocrystallites were obtained by hydrolysis and condensation of titanium tetraisopropyl in the presence of ethanol and water under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation. This method is attractive since it eliminated the high-temperature heat treatment required in the conventional sol-gel method, which is important in transforming amorphous titanium dioxide into a photoactive crystalline phase. In comparison to other methods, the developed method is simple, mild, green and efficient. The magnetization hysteresis loop for Fe3O4-TiO2 nanocomposites indicates that the hybrid catalyst shows superparamagnetic characteristics at room temperature. Photocatalytic activity studies confirmed that the as-prepared nanocomposites have high photocatalytic ability toward the photodegradation of RhB solution. Furthermore, the photodecomposition rate decreases only slightly after six cycles of the photocatalysis experiment. Thus, these Fe3O4-TiO2 nanocomposites can be served as an effective and conveniently recyclable photocatalyst.

Abstract:A facile and efficient approach for the fabrication of Fe3O4@TiO2 nanospheres with a good core–shell structure has been demonstrated. Products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results showed that Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited high degree of crystallinity, excellent magnetic properties at room temperature. Furthermore, the as-prepared Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited good photocatalytic activity toward the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) solution. Additionally, the recycling experiment of Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites had been done, demonstrating that Fe3O4@TiO2 nanocomposites have high efficiency and stability.

These multifunctional materials possess large magnetization, open mesopores, and a stably confined but exposed catalytically active component. Abstract:Well-defined magnetic separable, hollow spherical Fe3O4/TiO2 hybrid photocatalysts were successfully prepared through a poly(styrene-acrylic acid) (PSA) template method. This bifunctional product was characterized in terms of the particle size, surface morphology, chemical composition, and magnetic properties using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns. The M-H hysteresis loop for Fe3O4/TiO2 hollow spheres indicates that the composite spheres show superparamagnetic characteristics at room temperature. These magnetic TiO2 composites with hollow nature exhibit good photocatalytic activity under UV light irradiation and can be recycled six times by magnetic separation without major loss of activity. This method can be further applied to synthesize other bifunctional hollow spheres, such as Fe3O4/SnO2 and Fe3O4/CdS.

Abstract:The heterogeneous photocatalysis technique to treat dye effluents demands micrometer-sized titania aggregates with one-dimensional nanostructures, which possess high photocatalytic activity and at the same time facilitate the catalyst-recovery from a slurry system. In this study, the solution remained after interactions between metallic Ti and hydrogen peroxide was subjected to an alkaline hydrothermal treatment. Microspheres with extremely uniform sizes of ca. 2 μm in diameter were achieved after a subsequent proton exchange followed by calcination in air. The microspheres were urchin-like aggregates of radially assembled nanowires, which consisted of chain-like anatase single crystallites with an average diameter of 20-25 nm. The homogeneous microspheres calcinated at 600°C possessed a surface area of 45.4m(2)/g and exhibited an excellent activity to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water, which is significantly higher than that of P25 titania nanoparticles. Because of the much easier recovery of the photocatalyst, the homogeneous microspheres synthesized herein may find practical applications in efficient photocatalytic treatments of dye effluents.

Abstract:The development of simple and economical preparation of magnetic core-shell heterostructures remains a formidable challenge. This work proposed a novel facile fabrication approach for bifunctional Fe3O4@TiO2 core-shell photocatalyst through an in-situ synthesis technique at room temperature. The important performances of as-synthesized photocatalyst were characterized and the synthetic conditions were optimized. The results proved that it exhibited good photocatalytic ability under UV light irradiation since 97.56% of methylene blue (MB) was degraded after 90 min irradiation and kept good degradation efficiency and recovery after 5 cycles, indicating the great potential in practical applications.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Preparation and characterization of nanometer-sized magnetic photocatalyst

Abstract:By using nanometer-sized Fe3O4 as support, TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O3 coated particles were prepared by a sol-gel method. Its structure and morphology were characterized by XRD, TEM, and element analysis methods. The photocatalytic reactivity of TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O3 was studied with methyl orange solution. The results indicate that the TiO2/SiO2Fe3O4 two-double coated particles are composed of SiO2 mesosphere and anatase TiO2 crust. The new photocatalyst has not only excellent photocatalytic activity but also good magnetic property that can make the callback easy.

Abstract:Decreasing the shell thickness of TiO2 hollow spheres is a promising route to achieve an overall enhanced photocatalytic performance. However, in traditional synthetic approaches, the thin shell can not guarantee the structural stability of the TiO2 hollow spheres in the following calcination process to achieve a high degree of crystallinity. In this paper, ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres with good structural stability, high degree of crystallinity as well as in small grain size were prepared through a novel etching and reconstruction route using amorphous SiO2/TiO2 hollow spheres as precursor. With hot water as etchant, the removal of SiO2 leads to the reconstruction of TiO2 hollow spheres and receiving a thinner and thinner shell. Such thin shell enables the exposure of more catalytic active sites of TiO2 nanocrystals and the improved photogenerated charge transfer and separation. Meanwhile, the residual SiO2 on the TiO2 shell protects the TiO2 nanocrystals from growing larger during high-temperature calcinations. The as-obtained ultrathin porous TiO2 hollow spheres exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen production from water in comparison with those with thicker shell.
Stepwise Construction of Pt Decorated Oxygen-Deficient Mesoporous Titania Microspheres with Core-Shell Structure and Magneticseparability for Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalysis

Abstract:Solid photocatalysts with high specific surface area, superior photoactivity and ease of recycling are highly desired in chemical process, water treatment and so on. In this study, a facile stepwise sol-gel coating approach was utilized to synthesize Pt decorated oxygen-deficient mesoporous titania microspheres with core-shell structure and convenient magnetic separability (denoted as Fe3O4-@SiO2@Pt/mTiO(2-x)). These photocatalysts consist of magnetic Fe3O4 cores, nonporous insulating SiO2 middle layer and mesoporous anatase TiO2-x shell decorated by Pt nanoparticles (similar to 3.5 nm) through wet impregnation and H-2 reduction. As a result of high activity of oxygen-deficiency of black TiO2-x by H-2 reduction and efficient inhibition of electron-hole recombination by Pt nanoparticles, the rationally designed core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2@Pt/mTiO(2-x) photocatalysts exhibit superior photocatalytic performance in rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible light irradiation, with more than 98% of RhB degraded within 50 min. These core-shell structured photocatalysts show excellent recyclability under the assistance of magnetic separation with well-retained photocatalytic performance even after running five cycles. This stepwise synthesis method paves the way for the rational design of a high-efficiency recyclable heterogeneous catalyst, including photocatalysts, for various applications. Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2@Pt Hierarchical Core–Shell Microspheres: Controlled Synthesis, Enhanced Degradation System, and Rapid Magnetic Separation to Recycle

Abstract:Magnetic composite microspheres consisting of a SiO2-coated Fe3O4 core, an ordered TiO2 hierarchically structured shell, and a Pt nanoparticle layer dispersed on the surface of the TiO2 nanoplatelets have been successfully synthesized using a facile and efficient method. The shells of TiO2 hierarchical microspheres were assembled from nanoplatelets, which exposed the high-energy {001} facets, and the Pt nanoparticles were evenly deposited on the surface of the TiO2 nanoplatelets, with a concentration of similar to 1 wt %. The resulting composite microspheres exhibited flower-like hierarchical structures with a 202.42 m(2) g1 surface area and possessed superparamagnetic properties with a high saturation magnetization of 31.5 emu g1. These features endow the obtained composite microspheres with a high adsorption capacity and strong magnetic responsivity that could be easily separated by an external magnetic field. The high photocatalytic activity toward Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation may be caused by the hierarchically structured TiO2 with exposed high-energy {001} facets and the Pt nanoparticle deposits on TiO2 surfaces, which would be efficient for the electron transfer reactions. In addition, the composite microspheres showed high recycling efficiency and stability over several separation cycles.
Preparation of SiO2@Au@TiO2 Core–shell Nanostructures and Their Photocatalytic Activities under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures with tunable decoration amount of Au nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by combining three individual synthesis steps with calcination. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of naproxen in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. Results show that the as-obtained core-shell nanostructure is composed of a SiO2 core with an average diameter of similar to 337 nm, tunable content of Au nanoparticles adsorbed on the surface of SiO2 core, and an outer layer of TiO2 with an average thickness of similar to 7.0 nm. Photocatalysis experiments indicate that the SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures with Au decoration amount of 0.1 wt% (denotes as SiAuTi-2) exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity since it has the suitable decoration amount of Au nanoparticles for harvesting the visible-light energy and for prohibiting the recombination of free excitons. For fast separation of the catalysts, superparamagnetic cores of Fe3O4 were embedded in the SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures and hence they can be separated from aqueous solution by an external magnetic field within 10 min. Abstract:TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O4 (TSF) core-shell nanoparticles with good photocatalytic activity that are capable of fast magnetic separation have been successfully prepared by chemical coprecipitation and two-step sol-gel process. The as-prepared TSF nanoparticles were calcined at high temperature in order to transform the amorphous titanium dioxide into a photoactive crystalline phase. The calcined nanoparticles are composed of a Fe3O4 core with a strong response to external magnetic fields, a SiO2 intermediary layer, and a TiO2 outshell. Vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis confirms the superparamagnetism of calcined nanoparticles, which can enhance the recoverable properties of the novel photocatalyst. When the TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O4 core-shell nanoparticles are added to the crude oily wastewater, they exhibit high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of crude oily wastewater. The oil concentration could be reduced to lower than 30 ppm within 20 minutes for the case of initial oil concentration less than 350 ppm. It has been found that the TSF nanoparticles could be easily separated from the wastewater and withdrawn by using an external magnetic field. The recovered TSF nanoparticles possess high efficiency in the degradation of crude oily wastewater even after three times successive reuse. The present results indicate that TSF core-shell nanoparticles possess great application perspectives in the degradation of crude oily wastewater.

Abstract:AbstractTo prevent and avoid magnetic loss caused by magnetite core phase transition involving in high-temperature crystallization of amorphous sol–gel TiO2, core–shell Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2 composite spheres were synthesized via non-thermal process of TiO2. First, core–shell Fe3O4@SiO2 particles were synthesized through a solvothermal method followed by a sol–gel process. Second, anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were directly coated on Fe3O4@SiO2 surface by liquid-phase deposition method, which uses (NH4)2TiF6 as Ti source for TiO2 and H3BO3 as scavenger for F− ions at 50 °C. The morphology, structure, composition, and magnetism of the resulting composites were characterized and their photocatalytic activities were also evaluated. The results demonstrate that TiO2 NPs with an average size of 6–8 nm were uniformly deposited on the Fe3O4@SiO2 surface. Magnetic hysteresis curves indicate that the composite spheres exhibit superparamagnetic characteristics with a magnetic saturation of 32.5 emu/g at room temperature. The magnetic TiO2 composites show high photocatalytic performance and can be recycled five times by magnetic separation without major loss of activity, which meant that they can be used as efficient and conveniently renewable photocatalyst.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Magnetic photocatalyst TiO2/SiO2/(gamma-Fe2O3-SiO2) was prepared by coating the magnetic core, gamma-FeA-SiO2, with an amorphous SiO2 layer and then with an anatase TiO2 layer, to facilitate the recycling processing. The magnetic core of the catalyst, gamma-Fe2O3-SiO2 possesses outstanding thermal stability, which ensures the finally obtained photocatalyst keep high magnetism even after calcinations at 450 degrees C. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, VSM and ICP, which showed that TiO2/SiO2/(gamma-Fe2O3-SiO2) is of monodisperse spherical particles of 200-250 nm. The magnetic photocatalyst was proved to possess high activity in photocatalytic degradation of salicylhydroxamic acid when irradiated by UV light (lambda=254 nm).

Abstract:Magnetic photocatalyst TiO2/SiO2/(γ-Fe 2O3-SiO2) was prepared by coating the magnetic core, γ-Fe2O3-SiO2), with an amorphous SiO2 layer and then with an anatase TiO2 layer, to facilitate the recycling processing. The magnetic core of the catalyst. γ-Fe2O3-SiO2 possesses outstanding thermal stability, which ensures the finally obtained photocatalyst keep high magnetism even after calcinations at 450°C. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, VSM and ICP, which showed that TiO2/SiO 2/(γ-Fe2O3-SiO2) is of monodisperse spherical particles of 200-250 nm. The magnetic photocatalyst was proved to possess high activity in photocatalytic degradation of salicylhydroxamic acid when irradiated by UV light (λ=254 nm).

Abstract:By using nanometer-sized Fe3O4 as support, TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O4 coated particles were prepared by a sol-gel method. Its structure and morphology were characterized by XRD, TEM, and element analysis methods. The photocatalytic reactivity of TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O4 was studied with methyl orange solution. The results indicate that the TiO2/SiO2/Fe3O4 two-double coated particles are composed of SiO2 mesosphere and anatase TiO2 crust. The new photocatalyst has not only excellent photocatalytic activity but also good magnetic property that can make the callback easy.
