Abstract:Narrow-band deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have played a key role in the field of high-quality full-color displays. However, because of the considerable challenges of inherent band gaps, unbalanced carrier injection and the lack of molecular structures, narrow-band deep-blue emitters develop slowly compared with red- and green-emitting materials. Encouragingly, with the continuous efforts of scientists in recent years, great progress has been made in the molecule design and material synthesis of highly efficient narrow-band deep-blue emitters. The typical deep-blue emitters which exhibit narrow emission with a full width at half maximum of < 50 nm are summarized in this article. They are divided into the three categories: fluorescence, phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence. The methods of molecular design for realizing narrow-band deep-blue emission are described in detail and future research directions are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:The design and development of efficient emitters for deep-blue OLEDs with CIEy < 0.10 remains a challenge. A new series of tetracoordinated difluoroboron (BF2)-enabled thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials with D-A-BF2-type and D-pi-A-BF2-type frameworks for sky-blue to deep-blue emitters were designed and developed. The emission colors could be effectively tuned through regulating the degree of conjugation between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) by simply introducing a methyl group into the phenyl ring to adjust the molecular geometries and change the acceptor moieties, which were strongly supported by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical studies. All the tetracoordinated difluoroboron TADF emitters are air-stable and insensitive to moisture, and they are strongly emissive in degassed toluene peaking at 435-471 nm with high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQYs) of 94-99%. The BF2-MPCz-doped sky-blue OLED demonstrated a peak EQE of 13.8% with a L-max value of 20853 cd m(-2) and CIE coordinates of (0.175, 0.354), and the BF2-DMCz-doped deep-blue OLED achieved a peak EQE of 8.4% with CIE coordinates of (0.149, 0.083). This indicates that the BF2-enabled TADF materials can act as efficient emitters for the fabrication of sky-blue to deep-blue OLEDs.
Extremely Stable Deep-Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Employing Diindolophenazine-Based Fluorophore with Narrow-Band Emission and a Shallow LUMO Level

Abstract:The development of narrow emission bandwidth materials is a highly active research area in the field of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In addition to B- and N-heterocyclic compounds, known as multiple-resonance (MR) emitters, chromophores based on multi-N-heterocycles can also achieve ultra-narrow-band blue emission. However, the reliability of devices containing the latter has been rarely investigated. In this study, we designed a rigid and electron-rich chromophore diindolo[3,2,1-de:3 & PRIME;,2 & PRIME;,1 & PRIME;-kl]phenazine (DIPz) by fusing two 9Hcarbazole. This resulted in suppressed geometric distortion and vibration coupling during excitation. Furthermore, DIPz was modified with mesityl and 4-(tert-butyl)-N-phenylaniline groups, which finally evolved into a narrow-band blue emitter tDAmDIPz. The tDAmDIPz-based device showed an emission maximum at 458 nm with a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 17 nm, and a high maximum external quantum efficiency of 9.1%. Because the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of - 1.98 eV for tDAmDIPz was much shallower than - 2.47 eV for the anthracene-based host, electron trapping at emitters could be prevented, resulting in a very long LT95 lifetime of 338 h at a current density of 25 mA/cm2, which was higher than devices based on traditional BN-type MR emitters. This study suggested a general relationship between the operational lifetime and the LUMO energy difference between the emitter and the host, which opens a door to extremely stable blue OLEDs.

Abstract:The deep-blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology have been considered one of the most promising methods for the mass production of displays. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, in which harvesting triplet excitons are used to reach high internal quantum efficiency (IQE), is useful in realizing high efficiency. However, the utilization of TADF emitters in deep-blue OLEDs with low Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinate y coordinate (CIEy<0.06) is very complicated, and have not been systematically studied by the researchers from worldwide. Generally, most reported OLEDs with CIEy<0.06 are achieved by traditional fluorescent deep-blue emitters. However, it is challengeable to obtain deep-blue fluorescent OLEDs with high EQE (reaching the theoretical limit of 5%). In this work, we have successfully employed a hole transporting material for emitter, which can increase the efficiency in deep-blue OLEDs using TADF technology. A device using DTF as emitter exhibits deep-blue emission peaks at 427.0nm. The device employed with the proposed hole transporting material exhibits high characteristic with CIE coordinates of (0.155, 0.051), turn-on voltage (Von) of 4.5V, and the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 4.5%. Finally, the performance of OLED can be improved to 5.0% by optimizing the device structure.

Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is observed from a charge-transfer compound bis[4-(3,6-dimethoxycarbazole)phenyl]sulfone (DMOC-DPS). In comparison with the previously reported carbazole/sulfone derivative with tert-butyl substituents on the carbazole donors, DMOC-DPS exhibits a much shorter excited-state lifetime in both an aromatic solution and an organic thin film, because the change of the substituent on the donor affects the molecular energy levels of the first singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) excited states in different ways, decreasing the energy gap between S1 and T1 (ΔEST). An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on DMOC-DPS achieves a maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.5% and reduced efficiency roll-off, with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.16), owing to efficient exciton harvesting that occurs through triplet-to-singlet up-conversion.
Highly Efficient Organic Blue Electroluminescent Materials and Devices with Mesoscopic Structures

Abstract:Due to the difficulty in achieving high efficiency and high color purity simultaneously, blue emission is the limiting factor for the performance and stability of OLEDs. Since 2003, we have been working on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), especially on blue light. After a series of molecular designs, novel strategies have been proposed from different aspects. At first, highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through molecular design with highly twisted structure to suppress fluorescence quenching and redshift. Deep blue emitters with high efficiency in solid state, a twisted structure with aggregation induced emission (AIE) characteristics was incorporated to inhibit molecular aggregation, and triplet-triplet fusion (TTF) and hybridized localized charge transfer (HLCT) were adopted to increase the ratio of triplet exciton used. Secondly, a highly efficient blue OLED could be achieved through improving charge transport. New electron transport materials (ETMs) with wide band gap were developed to control charge transport balance in devices. Thirdly, a highly efficient deep blue emission could be achieved through a mesoscopic structure of out-coupling layer. A mesoscopic photonic structured organic thin film was fabricated on the top of metal electrode by self-aggregation in order to improve the light out-coupling efficiency.

Abstract:Deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with narrow emission spectra and high efficiency, meeting the Rec.2020 standard, hold significant promise in the realm of 4K/8K ultrahigh-definition displays. However, the development of light-emitting materials exhibiting both narrowband emission and high efficiency, particularly in the realm of deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), confronts substantial challenges. Herein, a novel deep-blue TADF emitter, named BOC-PSi, was designed by integrating a rigid B-heterotriangulene acceptor (A) with a rigid phenazasiline donor (D). The replacement of a sp3 carbon atom with a sp3 silicon atom in the D moiety helps to restrict the low-frequency bending vibration throughout the entire D-A molecular backbone, while concurrently accelerating the multi-channel reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) processes. Notably, OLEDs using the BOC-PSi emitter exhibit exceptional performance, with a high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) approaching 20%, and a superior color purity closely aligning with the Rec.2020 blue standard. A deep blue TADF emitter composed of rigid D and A units was developed. BOC-PSi-based OLED exhibited not only an impressive EQEmax approaching 20%, but also a superior color purity approaching the Rec.2020 blue standard.
Emerging Materials for High-Efficiency Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs)

Abstract:OLED plays a vital role in the realization of full-color display and lighting solutions. However, the development of blue OLED faces many challenges, such as energy gap issues, stability, and efficiency. This paper aims to explore the key role that advances in materials science and physics have played in the improvement of blue OLED technology. Firstly, the importance of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap in blue OLEDs for luminescence color is illustrated by explaining the electroluminescence process in organic compounds, with special attention to exciton formation and recombination mechanism. Subsequently, advances in light-emitting materials in blue OLED, including the development of phosphorescent materials and TADF materials, are discussed in depth, and examples from recent research papers are cited. In addition, strategies of molecular design in improving the stability of blue luminescent materials are discussed, and case studies of relevant research papers are provided. In terms of device structure and material selection, this paper analyzes the development of host materials and transport materials and introduces the influence on the performance optimization of blue OLED. Finally, the challenges faced by blue OLED materials and possible breakthrough directions for future materials science research are discussed.

Abstract:Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are kind of easily fabricated and low-cost light-emitting devices that can efficiently convert electric power to light energy. Compared with blue and green LECs, the performance of deep-red LECs is limited by the high non-radiative rate of emitters in long-wavelength region. While various organic emitters with deep-red emission have been developed to construct high-performance LECs, including polymers, metal complexes, and organic luminous molecules (OLMs), but this is seldom summarized. Therefore, we overview the recent advances of organic emitters with emission at the deep-red region for LECs, and specifically highlight the molecular design approach and electrochemiluminescence performance. We hope that this review can act as a reference for further research in designing high-performance deep-red LECs.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology has rapidly emerged in the display and lighting sectors due to its high contrast ratio, wide viewing angle, and sleek design. Beyond these attributes, OLEDs have also demonstrated crucial applications in medicine, fashion, sports, and more, leveraging their emissive properties and flexible design. As the cornerstone of full-color displays, blue OLEDs, whose performance directly impacts color rendition and saturation, have garnered significant attention from both scientific researchers and industrial practitioners. Despite the numerous advantages of OLED technology, blue OLEDs still confront formidable challenges in terms of luminous efficiency, durability, and material stability. This review examines the evolution of blue OLED materials over recent years, specifically focusing on three generations: fluorescent, phosphorescent, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through molecular design, device structure optimization, and the application of innovative technologies, remarkable advancements have been achieved in enhancing the luminous efficiency, lifetime, and color purity of blue OLEDs. However, to advance commercialization, future efforts must not only ensure high efficiency and long lifetime but also improve material stability, environmental sustainability, and reduce development costs. Emerging materials such as thermally activated exciton materials and the application of hyperfluorescent (HF) OLED technology represent vital driving forces for the continuous advancement of blue OLED technology. It is anticipated that significant milestones will continue to be achieved in the development of highly efficient blue OLEDs in the future.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are expected to support the future applications in flat-panel displays and solid-state lightings owing to their advantages of flexibility, light weight, high resolution, energy conservation, etc. Achieving efficient deep blue electroluminescence with excellent color purity (narrow emission) remains a big challenge for OLEDs. Herein, two anthracene derivatives, PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh, with a hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT) excited state are obtained by attaching the large periphery groups of phenanthroimidazole/pyrenoimidazole and terphenyl unit to the 9,10-positions of anthracene. The sterically asymmetric strategy can efficiently suppress the unfavorable intermolecular interactions and realize deep blue emission. The introduction of neutral terphenyl unit avoids the potential reduction of fluorescence quantum yield from strong charge transfer (CT) characteristics. More importantly, the relatively weak CT state and the rigid molecular structure can significantly reduce the vibrational motion to obtain relatively narrow emission spectra. The doped devices based on PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh show strong deep blue electroluminescence with CIE coordinates of (0.15, 0.06) and (0.15, 0.07), high color purity, and narrow full width at half maxima (FWHM) of merely 50 and 52 nm, respectively, meeting well with the EBU standard. The EQEs are as high as 8.09% and 8.44% for PIAnTPh and PyIAnTPh, which are among the state-of-the-art deep blue OLEDs.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have outperformed conventional display technologies in smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and televisions while gradually growing to cover a sizable fraction of the solid-state lighting industry. Blue emission is a crucial chromatic component for realizing high-quality red, green, blue, and yellow (RGBY) and RGB white display technologies and solid-state lighting sources. For consumer products with desirable lifetimes and efficiency, deep blue emissions with much higher power efficiency and operation time are necessary prerequisites. This article reviews over 700 papers covering various factors, namely, the crucial role of blue emission for full-color displays and solid-state lighting, the performance status of blue OLEDs, and the systematic development of fluorescent, phosphorescent, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence blue emitters. In addition, various challenges concerning deep blue efficiency, lifetime, and approaches to realizing deeper blue emission and higher efficacy for blue OLED devices are also described.

Abstract:High performance solution-processable deep-blue emitters with a Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate of CIEy ≤ 0.08 are highly desired in ultrahigh-definition display. Although, deep-blue materials with hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) excited-state feature are promising candidates, their rigidity and planar molecular structures limit their application in solution-processing technique. Herein, four novel deep-blue solution-processable HLCT emitters were first proposed by attaching rigid imide aliphatic rings as functional units onto the HLCT emitting core. The functional units not only improve solubility, enhance thermal properties and morphological stability of the emitting core, but also promote photoluminescence efficiency, balance charge carrier transport, and inhibit aggregation-caused quenching effect due to the weak electron-withdrawing property as well as steric hindrance. The corresponding solution-processable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) substantiate an unprecedented maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 11.5% with an emission peak at 456 nm and excellent colour purity (full width at half maximum = 56 nm and CIEy = 0.09). These efficiencies represent the state-of-the-art device performance among the solution-processable blue OLEDs based on the "hot exciton" mechanism. This simple strategy opens up a new avenue for designing highly efficient solution-processable deep-blue organic luminescent materials.

Abstract:Although organic light-emitting devices have been commercialized as flat panel displays since 1997, only singlet excitons were emitted. Full use of singlet and triplet excitons, electrophosphorescence, has attracted increasing attentions after the premier work made by Forrest, Thompson, and co-workers. In fact, red electrophosphorescent dye has already been used in sub-display of commercial mobile phones since 2003. Highly efficient green phosphorescent dye is now undergoing of commercialization. Very recently, blue phosphorescence approaching the theoretical efficiency has also been achieved, which may overcome the final obstacle against the commercialization of full color display and white light sources from phosphorescent materials. Combining light out-coupling structures with highly efficient phosphors ( shown in the table-of-contents image), white emission with an efficiency matching that of fluorescent tubes (90 lm/W) has now been realized. It is possible to tune the color to the true white region by changing to a deep blue emitter and corresponding wide gap host and transporting material for the blue phosphor. In this article, recent progresses in red, green, blue, and white electrophosphorescent materials for OLEDs are reviewed, with special emphasis on blue electrophosphorescent materials.

Abstract:Developing deep-blue emitters with high color purity is crucial for the advancement of ultrahigh-definition display technology based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Since most emitters are empirically designed, establishing a feasible design strategy for developing ultrapure blue emitters with narrowband characteristics remains an urgent and challenging goal. Here, we subtly construct four blue emitters with multiple resonance (MR) effect and provide an in-depth understanding for the nature of narrowband emission from the perspective of electronic confinement and structural distortion combined with actual molecular structures. A novel and feasible molecular design strategy is proposed based on the "flexible locking-ring" concept, enabling effective narrowing main peak while retaining bluer emission. More impressively, a simple sensitizer-free OLED based on SAC2MN2B with the "flexible locking-ring" design achieves one of state-of-the-art device performance with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 19.80 %, and a pure deep-blue emission peaking at 448 nm with small full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm and CIE coordinates of (0.147, 0.061). This work successfully achieves high-performance OLED with high color purity and provides a feasible and promising design strategy for developing organic emitters with ultrapure blue emission.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have rapidly progressed in recent years due to their unique characteristics and potential applications in flat panel displays. Significant advancements in top-emitting OLEDs have driven the development of large-size screens and microdisplays with high resolution and large aperture ratio. After a brief introduction to the architecture and types of top-emitting OLEDs, the microcavity theory typically used in top-emitting OLEDs is described in detail here. Then, methods for producing and understanding monochromatic (red, green, and blue) and white top-emitting OLEDs are summarized and discussed. Abstract:Highly efficient deep-blue organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) have been fabricated using 2,7-di(2,2':6',2″-terpyridin-4-yl)-9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene (DTPF) as the emitter, which has a wide energy gap, high emission quantum yield (Φf = 0.88), and high electron transporting property to improve the charge balance. A high efficiency of 2.55 cd/A and 2.67 lm/W are obtained in OLED. The device also exhibits a low turn-on voltage of 3.0 V and Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.16, 0.09).
Highly Efficient Hybridized Local and Charge-Transfer (hlct) Deep-Blue Electroluminescence with Excellent Molecular Horizontal Orientation

Abstract:Efficient deep-blue emitters with nice color purity are fundamental in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) applications. Herein, we report two phenanthroimidazole (PPI) derivative deep-blue emitters (DP, SP) with hybrid local and charge-transfer (HLCT) properties of high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and nice color purity. More importantly, the horizontal dipole orientation (Theta(//)) of them are both superior to the isotropic emitters (66.7%), especially the Theta(//) of SP is 89.5%, which can greatly improve its OLED performance. As a result, non-doped OLED of SP exhibits deep-blue emission with Commission Internationale de lEclairage (CIE) coordinate of (0.158, 0.068) and maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE(max)) of 11.3%, which is nearly twice that of DP and is one of the best results among the non-delayed, non-doped deep-blue fluorescent OLEDs. Furthermore, SP-based doped OLED displays an excellent performance of near ultraviolet (NUV) emission at 406 nm with CIE coordinate of (0.157, 0.046) and EQE(max) of 7.5%, which is also a competitive result in the materials with comparable NUV OLED applications.
