Abstract:In addition to conventional amphiphiles, an emerging research area is supra-amphiphiles, which are constructed on the basis of noncovalent interactions and dynamic covalent bonds. In this feature article, we have provided a general introduction to the concept, design principles, and topologies of supra-amphiphiles, starting from some rationally tailored building blocks. In addition, we highlight some progress in the functional assembly of supra-amphiphiles, such as responsive nanoscale carriers, antibacterial and antitumor agents, fluorescent-based chemical sensors, and enzyme mimics. The supra-amphiphile is a new bridge between colloidal science and supramolecular chemistry, and it is a field where we can make full use of our imaginative power.

Abstract:Superamphiphiles refer to amphiphiles that are formed on the basis of noncovalent interactions. Based on the concept of supramolecular engineering, we are able to fabricate various types of superamphiphiles, including low-molecular weight superamphiphiles and polymeric superamphiphiles. The driving forces to construct superamphiphiles can be single noncovalent interaction or the cooperation of different noncovalent interactions. The concept of superamphiphiles can not only enrich the traditional colloid sciences, but also provide a new approach for the fabrication of functional supramolecular materials.

Abstract:In addition to supra-amphiphiles formed by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, host–guest recognition, charge transfer interactions, hydrophobic–hydrophilic interactions and π–π stacking interactions, some supramolecular amphiphiles are driven by coordination bonds (also known as metal–ligand interactions). Compared with other non-covalent interactions, metal–ligand interactions offer many unique advantages in the construction of supra-amphiphiles. As a result of their tunable binding geometry and strength, metal–ligand interactions allow facile control over molecular topology and self-assembly behavior. In addition, the presence of a metal complex in the copolymer structure introduces unique functionalities—including electrochemical, photochemical and redox properties—that are not observed in covalent or noncovalent counterparts. The presence of active metal complexes in micellar systems could be interesting for applications in supported catalysis and nanotechnology. This chapter reviews supra-amphiphiles based on metal–ligand interactions. We first focus on the topology and self-assembly of supra-amphiphiles with different levels of complexity and then summarize the functions and applications of coordination supra-amphiphiles.

Abstract:With the elaborate engineering of supra-amphiphiles based on dual charge-transfer interactions, the rational design and programmable transformation of well-defined 1D and 2D nanostructures have been demonstrated. First, H-shaped supra-amphiphiles are successfully obtained on the basis of the directional charge-transfer interactions of naphthalene diimide and naphthalene, which self-assemble in water to form 2D nanosheets. Second, by complexation of the H-shaped supra-amphiphiles with pyrene derivatives, the 2D nanosheets transform into ultralong 1D nanofibers. Therefore, this line of research represents a successful example of supramolecular engineering and has enriched its realm.

Abstract:Selenium is an essential microelement for human beings. Because of the low bond energy of C-Se and Se-Se, selenium-containing polymers have become special materials with unique properties and functions. We have designed and synthesized a series of selenium-containing polymers, including main chain and side chain block copolymers, dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers for controlled self-assembly and disassembly under various responsive stimuli, which may act as new biomaterials for controlled drug delivery and efficient enzyme mimics. It is anticipated greatly this line of work will open an avenue for the combination of corporative therapy for cancer treatment.

Abstract:Control of self-assembly is significant to the preparation of supramolecular materials, but the control of hydration, responsiveness, dimension, catalysis of macrocyclic amphiphiles in an atom-economic manner is still a great challenge. The herein presented 527 Da low-molecular-weight macrocyclic amphiphile was fabricated by utilizing the selenium-containing crown ether as a hydrophobic motif together with guanidinium group as the hydrophilic moiety. The resulting benzo[21]crown-7 based macrocyclic amphiphile readily forms a redox-responsive solid nanoparticles in water, which can further interconnect into wrinkled pattern on-surface, as well as exhibits as a nanozyme for catalyzing disulfid bond formation. The present work highlights the great potential of guanidinium- and selenium-containing crown ethers for the control of functional assemblies.

Abstract:The process of self-assembly spontaneously creates well-defined structures from various chemical building blocks. Self-assembly can include different levels of complexity: it can be as simple as the dimerization of two small building blocks driven by hydrogen bonding or as complicated as a cell membrane, a remarkable supramolecular architecture created by a bilayer of phospholipids embedded with functional proteins. The study of self-assembly in simple systems provides a fundamental understanding of the driving forces and cooperativity behind these processes. Once the rules are understood, these guidelines can facilitate the research of highly complex self-assembly processes. Among the various components for self-assembly, an amphiphilic molecule, which contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, forms one of the most powerful building blocks. When amphiphiles are dispersed in water, the hydrophilic component of the amphiphile preferentially interacts with the aqueous phase while the hydrophobic portion tends to reside in the air or in the nonpolar solvent. Therefore, the amphiphiles aggregate to form different molecular assemblies based on the repelling and coordinating forces between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts of the component molecules and the surrounding medium. In contrast to conventional amphiphiles, supra-amphiphiles are constructed on the basis of noncovalent interactions or dynamic covalent bonds. In supra-amphiphiles, the functional groups can be attached to the amphiphiles by noncovalent synthesis, greatly speeding their construction. The building blocks for supra-amphiphiles can be either small organic molecules or polymers. Advances in the development of supra-amphiphiles will not only enrich the family of conventional amphiphiles that are based on covalent bonds but will also provide a new kind of building block for the preparation of complex self-assemblies. When polymers are used to construct supra-amphiphiles, the resulting molecules are known as superamphiphiles. This Account will focus on the use of amphiphiles and supra-amphiphiles for self-assembly at different levels of complexity. We introduce strategies for the fabrication of robust assemblies through self-assembly of amphiphiles. We describe the supramolecular approach for the molecular design of amphiphiles through the enhancement of intermolecular interaction among the amphiphiles. In addition, we describe polymerization under mild conditions to stabilize the assemblies formed by self-assembly of amphiphiles. Finally, we highlight self-assembly methods driven by noncovalent interactions or dynamic covalent bonds for the fabrication of supra-amphiphiles with various topologies. Further self-assembly of supra-amphiphiles provides new building blocks for complex structures, and the dynamic nature of the supra-amphiphiles endows the assemblies with stimuli-responsive functions.

Abstract:Selenium is an essential element to human body. Our research group has recently revealed many unique features of selenium-containing bonds. For instance, diselenide bond has dual redox response, and it is also a type of dynamic bond which can undergo exchange reaction under visible light irradiation. Combing those interesting properties of selenium-containing bonds with surface/interface chemistry can endow system with unique responsive behaviors. This article reviews the recent progresses we made in the field of selenium-containing surface/interface chemistry. We used single molecule force spectroscopy to study the nature of selenium-containing bonds in the force point of view, and used interface chemistry to modulate the equilibrium of diselenide dynamic exchange reaction. Additionally, we achieved reversible surface modification, two-dimensional material functionalization and layer-by-layer nanocomposite film fabrication based on the redox and light response of diselenide bond, which may find potential applications in fields like biomedical research and liquid transfer.

Abstract:Control of self-assembly is significant to the preparation of supramolecular materials and illustration of diversities in either natural or artificial systems. Supra-amphiphiles have remarkable advantages in the construction of nanostructures but control of shape and size of supramolecular nanostructures is still a great challenge. Here, we fabricate a series of supra-amphiphiles by utilizing the recognition motifs based on a heteroditopic porphyrin amphiphile and its zinc complex. These porphyrin amphiphiles can bind with a few guests including Cl – , coronene, C 60 , 4,4′-bipyridine and 2,4,6-tri(pyridin-4-yl)-1,3,5-triazine, which are further applied to facilitate the controllable self-assembly. Addition of these guests result in the formation of various supra-amphiphiles with well-defined structures, thus induce the generation of different aggregates. A diverse of aggregation morphologies including nanospheres, nanorods, films, spheric micelles, vesicles and macrowires are constructed upon the influence of specific complexation, which highlights the present work with abundant control on the shapes and dimensions of self-assemblies.

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:Polymeric supra-amphiphiles are amphiphiles that are fabricated by linking polymeric segments, or small molecules and polymeric segments, by noncovalent interactions or dynamic covalent bonds. Compared with conventional amphiphilic polymers, polymeric supra-amphiphiles are advantageous in that they possess dynamic features and their preparation may be to some extent more facile. Moreover, polymeric supra-amphiphiles are endowed with richer structure and higher stability compared with small-molecule supra-amphiphiles. Owing to these properties, polymeric supra-amphiphiles have so far shown great promise as surfactants, nanocarriers and in therapies. In this tutorial review, recent work on polymeric supra-amphiphiles, from molecular architectures to functional assemblies, is presented and summarized. Different polymeric supra-amphiphile topologies and related applications are highlighted. By combining polymer chemistry with supramolecular chemistry and colloid science, we anticipate that the study of polymeric supra-amphiphiles will promote the continued development of the molecular engineering of functional supramolecular systems, and lead to practical applications, especially in drug delivery.

Abstract:Chalcogen-bonding interactions have been viewed as new non-covalent forces in supramolecular chemistry. However, harnessing chalcogen bonds to drive molecular self-assembly processes is still unexplored. Here we report for the first time a novel class of supra-amphiphiles formed by Te center dot center dot center dot O or Se center dot center dot center dot O chalcogen-bonding interactions, and their self-assembly into supramolecular vesicles and nanofibers. A quasi-calix[4]chalcogenadiazole (C4Ch) as macrocyclic donor and a tailed pyridine N-oxide surfactant as molecular acceptor are designed to construct the donor-acceptor complex via chalcogen-chalcogen connection between the chalcogenadiazole moieties and oxide anion. The affinity of such chalcogen-bonding can dictate the geometry of supraamphiphiles, driving diverse self-assembled nanostructures. Furthermore, the reversible disassembly of these structures can be promoted by introducing competing halide Ions or by decreasing systemic pH.

Abstract:This communication describes the fabrication of diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers. The diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers were fabricated by equimolarly mixing (FGGC11Se) 2 and CB[ 8] in aqueous solution driven by host-guest interactions between cucurbit[8] uril (CB[8]) and Phe-Gly-Gly. The amphiphilic diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers could further form aggregates for loading hydrophobic small molecules such as Nile Red and releasing them upon addition of oxidants or reductants. This line of research not only expands the library of selenium-containing polymers, but also offers a new strategy to develop functional supramolecular polymers for drug delivery.

Abstract:The fabrication of amphiphobic materials requires a precise and complicated design, especially for 3D porous materials, and amphiphobic sponges have rarely been investigated. This paper describes the synthesis of a superhydrophobic and oleophobic silicone sponge (SS-F) by simply building hierarchical structures, that is, introducing a secondary structure on the pore walls of a hydrophobic and oleophilic silicone sponge. This simple and efficient synthesis method is based on the thiol-ene click reaction. The uniform structure, composition, and hierarchical structures of SS-F are confirmed. The results of the analyses show that the secondary microstructure improves liquid repellency, while the rough and porous surface design ensures durability. Thus, SS-F exhibits good stability, and the amphiphobicity of the surface could withstand scalpel cutting, cyclic compression, extreme temperatures of 250 and -196 degrees C for 5 h, and long-term storage in an ambient environment. Both its outer and inner surfaces show superhydrophobicity and oleophobicity, which restrict the ability of the adsorption of liquids, enabling its use in oil and water. The introduction of hierarchical structures paves a way for preparing other 3D porous materials.

Abstract:The imine bond, a kind of dynamic covalent bond, is used to bind two bolaform amphiphiles together with spacers, yielding H-shaped supra-amphiphiles. Mice liar aggregates formed by the self-assembly of the H-shaped supra-amphiphiles are observed. When pH is tuned down from basic to slightly acidic, the benzoic imine bond can be hydrolyzed, leading to the dissociation of H-shaped supra-amphiphiles. Moreover, H-shaped supra-amphiphiles have a lower critical micelle concentration than their building blocks, which is very helpful in enhancing the stability of the benzoic imine bond being hydrolyzed by acid. The surface tension isotherms of the H-shaped supra-amphiphiles with different spacers indicate their twisty conformation at a gas-water interface. The study of H-shaped supra-amphiphiles can enrich the family of amphiphiles, and moreover, the pH-responsiveness may make them apply to controlled or targetable drug delivery in a biological environment.
