Abstract:We developed a method for integrated analysis of multi-source data for vegetation classification at the continental scale, and applied it to China. Multi-temporal 1 km NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Holdridge's life zone system and its vegetation-climate classification indices such as bio-temperature (BT), potential evapotranspiration rate (PER) and precipitation ( P ) correspond better with undisturbed vegetation types all over the world. We generated 1 km images of BT, PER and P using the quantitative model of Holdridge's life zone system with climate data of China. They were processed with principal component analysis (PCA) to produce an ancillary image. This image and 12 monthly images of maximum Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values at 1 km resolution were input into an ISODATA clustering algorithm to carry out a vegetation classification. As a result, 47 information classes were obtained. Seasonal NDVI parameters derived through time series analysis (TSA) of the NDVI temporal profile and a set of quantitative vegetation-climate parameters of Holdrige's life zone model were synthetically utilized to label information classes. In this method, climate, terrain and spectral data were integrated; separability between vegetation types and classification accuracy were improved. A total of 47 land cover classes were obtained. Validation data collected in the field using GPS indicated that an overall classification accuracy of 71.4% was reached, an 8.1% improvement to the map derived only from multi-temporal NDVI images. To compare our results with the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) DISCover land cover dataset, we aggregated our land cover classes according to the IGBP classification system. The overall classification accuracy for the aggregated vegetation map from our classification results improved IGBP land cover map from 75.5% to 86.3%.
An Integrated Classification Method for Thematic Mapper Imagery of Plain and Highland Terrains

Abstract:The classification of thematic mapper imagery in areas with strong topographic variations has proven problematic in the past using a single classifier, due to the changing sun illumination geometry. This often results in the phenomena of identical object with dissimilar spectrum and different objects with similar spectrum. In this paper, an integrated classification method that combines a decision tree with slope data, tasseled cap transformation indices and maximum likelihood classifier is introduced, to find an optimal classification method for thematic mapper imagery of plain and highland terrains. A Landsat 7 ETM+ image acquired over Hangzhou Bay, in eastern China was used to test the method. The results indicate that the performance of the integrated classifier is acceptably good in comparison with that of the existing most widely used maximum likelihood classifier. The integrated classifier depends on hypsography (variation in topography) and the characteristics of ground truth objects (plant and soil). It can greatly reduce the influence of the homogeneous spectrum caused by topographic variation. This integrated classifier might potentially be one of the most accurate classifiers and valuable tool for land cover and land use mapping of plain and highland terrains.

Abstract:Urban vegetation classification need vegetation index especially temporal information of vegetation, thus high spatio-temporal NDVI product is necessary. NDVI time-series data derived from HJ 1A/B time series imagery (HJ NDVI) have relatively high spatio-temporal resolution. In this research, HJ NDVI time series of typical vegetation types in the city of Nanjing are established, the S-G filter is chosen to filtering. Taking filtered HJ NDVI time-series data as “simulated Hyperspectral data”, the linear spectral mixture unmixing algorithm is used to carry out vegetation mapping. The results indicate that unmixing algorithm of linear spectral mixture model can obtain the distribution information of the five kinds of vegetation sub-classes including shrub, grassland, evergreen needle forest, broadleaved deciduous forest, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest in the research area.
Study on the Relationship Between Different Ecosystems and Climate in China Using NOAA/AVHRR data

Abstract:Multiyear (12a) NOAA/AVHRR NDVI and meteorological station data were used to study the relationship between different ecosystem and climate in China. In order to investigate the responses of different vegetation types to inter-annual climate variability, we classified 21 vegetation types using GIS and the principal component analysis (PCA). Monthly NDVI was got for each meteorological station through its longitude and latitude. The relations between averaged NDVI and precipitation, and temperature suggest that precipitation plays a more important part for the ecosystem than temperature does in China. The relationship between NDVI and climate at an averaged year shows that temperature has a stronger force than precipitation, while precipitation causes different responses of vegetation to climate. The correlations of seasonal variations between NDVI and precipitation, and temperature indicate that the responses of ecosystem to inter-annual variability of climate differ at seasonal level, and that NDVI data in winter are inappropriate for investigating the variability of ecosystems in northern China. To study ecosystem-climate relationship at annual level, the data within growing period (April to October) for vegetation in most parts of China were used, and the results show that ecosystem-climate relations for different regions differ greatly. In southern China, there is a negative correlation between precipitation and NDVI and a positive correlation between temperature and NDVI; and vice versa in northern China. Additionally, we found there are two sensitive (statistical significant) regions in responses of fluctuation of climate, and one is ecotone of grass-forest in northern China and the other is central part of Yunnan province in Southwest China, respectively.

Abstract:This paper focuses on object-oriented land cover classification using multi-temporal remotely sensed imagery. We proposed an approach by building rules using multi-temporal HJ-1 CCD imagery and other auxiliary data to classify various land cover types in central Shandong province. We analyzed the seasonal dynamics of vegetation indices (EVI (Enhanced Vegetation index) and NDVI). Vegetation index time series of multi-temporal images can help differentiate forest types. Given the difficulties of vegetation classification, especially in mountainous area, more information available such as DEM, slope, spatial features and priori knowledge were also utilized. The overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of land cover classification are 80.1% and 0.76, respectively. The results show that besides the spectral information, texture, DEM, slope and auxiliary data are very useful for land cover classification. Multi-temporal information can improve the vegetation classification result significantly and meanwhile has much potential to be explored.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a 1-km landcover dataset of China by using monthly NDVI data spanning April 1992 through March 1993. The method used combined unsupervised and supervised classification of NDVI data from AVHRR. It is composed of five steps: (a) unsupervised clustering of monthly AVHRR NDVI maximum value composites is performed using the ISOCLASS algorithm; (b) preliminary identification is carried out with the addition of digital elevation models, eco-region data and a collection of other landcover/vegetation reference data to identify the clusters with single landcover classes; (c) re-clustering is performed of clusters with size greater than a given threshold value and containing two or more disparate landcover classes; (d) cluster combining is performed to combine all clusters with a single landcover class in one cluster, and all other clusters into one mixed cluster; and (e) supervised classification is used to carry out post-classification of the mixed cluster generated in the previous step by using the maximum likelihood algorithm and the identified single landcover classes of the previous step as training data. The classification is based on extensive use of computer-assisted image processing and tools, as well as the skills of the human interpreter to take the final decisions regarding the relationship between spectral classes defined using unsupervised methods and landscape characteristics that are used to define landcover classes.
Crop classification using HJ satellite multispectral data in the North China Plain

Abstract:Abstract The HJ satellite constellation is designed for environment and disaster monitoring by the Chinese government. This paper investigates the performance of multitemporal multispectral charge-coupled device (CCD) data on board HJ-1-A and HJ-1-B for crop classification in the North China Plain. Support vector machine classifier is selected for the classification using different combinations of multitemporal HJ multispectral data. The results indicate that multitemporal HJ CCD data could effectively identify wheat fields with an overall classification accuracy of 91.7%. Considering only single temporal data, 88.2% is the best classification accuracy achieved using the data acquired at the flowering time of wheat. The performance of the combination of two temporal data acquired at the jointing and flowering times of wheat is almost as well as using all three temporal data, indicating that two appropriate temporal data are enough for wheat classification, and much more data have little effect on improving the classification accuracy. Moreover, two temporal data acquired over a larger time interval achieves better results than that over a smaller interval. However, the field borders and smaller cotton fields cannot be identified effectively by HJ multispectral data, and misclassification phenomenon exists because of the relatively coarse spatial resolution.

Multi-Year Mapping of Maize and Sunflower in Hetao Irrigation District of China with High Spatial and Temporal Resolution Vegetation Index Series

Abstract:Crop identification in large irrigation districts is important for crop yield estimation, hydrological simulation, and agricultural water management. Remote sensing provides an opportunity to visualize crops in the regional scale. However, the use of coarse resolution remote sensing images for crop identification usually causes great errors due to the presence of mixed pixels in regions with complex planting structure of crops. Therefore, it is preferable to use remote sensing data with high spatial and temporal resolutions in crop identification. This study aimed to map multi-year distributions of major crops (maize and sunflower) in Hetao Irrigation District, the third largest irrigation district in China, using HJ-1A/1B CCD images with high spatial and temporal resolutions. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) series obtained from HJ-1A/1B CCD images was fitted with an asymmetric logistic curve to find the NDVI characteristics and phenological metrics for both maize and sunflower. Nine combinations of NDVI characteristics and phenological metrics were compared to obtain the optimal classifier to map maize and sunflower from 2009 to 2015. Results showed that the classification ellipse with the NDVI characteristic of the left inflection point in the NDVI curve and the phenological metric from the left inflection point to the peak point normalized, with mean values of corresponding grassland indexes achieving the minimum mean relative error of 10.82% for maize and 4.38% for sunflower. The corresponding Kappa coefficient was 0.62. These results indicated that the vegetation and phenology-based classifier using HJ-1A/1B data could effectively identify multi-year distribution of maize and sunflower in the study region. It was found that maize was mainly distributed in the middle part of the irrigation district (Hangjinhouqi and Linhe), while sunflower mainly in the east part (Wuyuan). The planting sites of sunflower had been gradually expanded from Wuyuan to the north part of Hangjinhouqi and Linhe. These results were in agreement with the local economic policy. Results also revealed the increasing trends of both maize and sunflower planting areas during the study period.

Locust Habitats Monitoring Based on Multi-Temporal CCD Data of HJ-1 Satellite

Abstract:The classification of locust habitats is one of the most important tasks in terms of the monitoring and controlling of the locusts damages. Taking the Bohai development zone in Hebei province as the study area, this paper generated firstly the 14 scenes of temporal NDVI data from January 31 to December 9, 2010 based on image preprocessing and NDVI calculation from HJ-1 satellites. And then the classification system was developed according to the characteristics of the study area and locust habitats, including dense reeds, sparse reeds, folder wasteland, grassland, crop1, crops2, alfalfa, orchard, soil, salt water, building and road. At last, this paper classified the locust habitats using decision tree method based on the multi-temporal NDVI data. Verification data collected through ground surveys and 14 scenes of temporal CCD data were used for assessing the accuracy of the classified results. The results showed that some surface features prone to misclassification in a single phase for they have similar spectral characteristics were easy to classify from multi-temporal data because their different temporal signature.
Landscape Classification of Northeast China Based on NOAA/AVHRR Images and Geographical Spatial Data

Abstract:Based on prior related studies,landscape classification in Northeastern China was analyzed with the supports of RS and GIS technique.Land cover derived from NOAA/AVHRR images was the foundation of classification.Furthermore,such indices were used in the classification:altitude,slope and erosion intensity.Firstly,three physiographical regions and nine landscape regions were derived according to accumulation temperature greater than 10℃ and aridity.Then,the author obtained 16 land cover types from the NOAA/AVHRR images by stacking up the images and geographical spatial data.In this way,the interpretation precision can be increased to 70%.Thirdly,in each region,topographic units were derived according to DEM and slope.Soil erosion types were also obtained according to soil erosion classification system of China.Then,landscape classifications were completed by combining topographic units,soil erosion with land cover.In the end,the whole landscape classification map of Northeast China was produced by uniting each region.The classification results indicates that the landscape of Northeast China is dominated by plain,middle and low mountains or hills,which coincides with the fact of Northeast China in general.Slight soil erosion usually takes place in hills.While tableland around and in front of mountains are often exposed to slight and moderate water erosion.Taking soil erosion as an index of landscape classification is helpful to the predicts of future development and the present of measurements.The dynamics and potential problems existing in landscape types under the disturbances of nature and human being can also be presented by this classification method.The geographic spatial data in land cover classification of NOAA/AVHRR image contributes a lot to high classification efficiency, and it also has broaden the application of NOAA/AVHRR data in landscape research on a large scale.
Detecting crop rotations in china using avhrr imagery and ancillary data

Abstract:The situation of cropland use in China is very complicated. In many areas, the cropland is used in multi-cropped ways. There is a need for better information on the area and distribution of cropland using in different cropping rotation systems, but it is not easy to get it in traditional census ways. This paper focuses on the methodology of crop rotations detection in China using multitemporal satellites images. Two agricultural regions located in the middle of China were chosen as the study areas. The dataset used here includes 10 days composites NDVI (36 periods) obtained from the NASA Pathfinder AVHRR Land dataset, land-cover dataset derived from TM images, and the ground based agricultural monitoring data. The discrete Fourier transform was applied to the NDVI data set on a per pixel basis for the whole cropland of the study areas and then the additive and the first four harmonics (amplitude and phase) were classified using ISOLATE unsupervised classification algorithm for both regions respectively. Crop information derived from local stations and the Chinese cultivated system regionalization map were used to assess the accuracy of the result. The result of this study showed that the methodology used in this study is, in general, feasible for detecting crop rotations in China.
Wetland Vegetation Classification through Multi-Dimensional Feature Time Series Remote Sensing Images Using Mahalanobis Distance-Based Dynamic Time Warping

Abstract:Efficient methodologies for vegetation-type mapping are significant for wetland’s management practices and monitoring. Nowadays, dynamic time warping (DTW) based on remote sensing time series has been successfully applied to vegetation classification. However, most of the previous related studies only focused on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series while ignoring multiple features in each period image. In order to further improve the accuracy of wetland vegetation classification, Mahalanobis Distance-based Dynamic Time Warping (MDDTW) using multi-dimensional feature time series was employed in this research. This method extends the traditional DTW algorithm based on single-dimensional features to multi-dimensional features and solves the problem of calculating similarity distance between multi-dimensional feature time series. Vegetation classification experiments were carried out in the Yellow River Delta (YRD). Compared with different classification methods, the results show that the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm based on MDDTW (KNN-MDDTW) has achieved better classification accuracy; the overall accuracy is more than 90%, and kappa is more than 0.9.

Vegetation Classification Technology of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Based on Decision Tree Tool

Abstract:In order to express the macroscopic and fuzzy crop planting structure with quantitative,accurate and intuitive description,this paper used the method of integrating the multi-temporal and full-covered MODIS and medium resolution sample TM data,through the human-computer interaction means, which is the combination of analysis of MODIS vegetation indices on the crop growth laws and decision tree classification system.At last,the distribution information of winter wheat,cotton,maize,peanuts,fruit and vegetables which in Heilonggang was extracted successfully.The results showed that the accuracy of classification used by combination of TM images based on decision tree system and MODIS_EVI images could be up to 91.5%,and comparing with traditional image supervised classification results,those of vegetables,wheat,cotton,corn and maize could increase by 13.8%,2.0%,1.3% and 20.5% respectively.
A new method of vegetation classification based on temporal distribution of vegetation indices

Abstract:Vegetation classification is the basis for various hydrological and ecological studies. Some vegetation classifications using NDVI data have been studied commonly, however, there are some limitations in classification of vegetation using the average NDVI value, especially, the study with spectrum characteristics of the NDVI is relatively rare. Based on this, this paper introduces a new vegetation classification method which combines the phase with the NDVI distribution on the basis of computing the probability. Firstly, the probability of each vegetation type in a period was calculated with two-dimensional random variable conditional probability. Then we synthesized the image at germination, maturity and senescence periods, and the probability was calculated according to the fact that various vegetation types may have different biometric information at different periods. At last, vegetation classification map was finished on the probability value. The Wenquan area over the Qinghai-Tibet plateau (QTP) was taken as an experimental area. The result showed that the overall accuracy and kappa coefficient was 70% and 0.60, respectively. So the vegetation classification method can classify and discriminate vegetation effectively.

Abstract:Remotely sensed data have been widely used for classification of land-use and land-cover (LULC) types. However, classifying different forest types in Northeast China using satellite images is still a great challenge because of the similar spectral reflectances of different tree species. The differences of vegetation phenological characteristics provide the potential of classifying the types using time series of spectral variables derived from images. In this study, time series of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images obtained in 2012 for Northeast China were used to calculate various phenological metrics and to further derive amplitude and phase information of harmonic components using Fourier transforms. The separability of eight vegetation cover types plus water and built-up areas was then analysed using phenological metrics, and amplitude and phase of harmonic components. Moreover, a phenology-based decision tree classifier was developed to classify the types in this area. Out of 4900 national forest inventory plots, 3700 plots were used to train the decision tree classifier and 1200 plots to assess the accuracy of classification by combining the plots’ observations with the values of a published LULC map that had a higher spatial resolution and accuracy of classification using a window majority rule. In addition, three data sets from different temporal resolution MODIS NDVI and EVI time series and two similarity measures were compared for separability and classification of the types. The results showed that (1) Fourier transforms of NDVI and EVI time series led to the first four harmonic components (including component 0, average annual NDVI, and EVI) that captured the phenological characteristics of the cover types; (2) compared to those using only NDVI, the separability values of the classes using NDVI, amplitude, and phase increased from 1.71 to 1.95, implying the potential improvement of classification; (3) the data set from 10-day NDVI time series had higher classification accuracy than those from 16-day NDVI and EVI time series, although the EVI time series performed slightly better than the NDVI time series at the same temporal resolution; and (4) a classification accuracy of 83.8% with a kappa coefficient of 0.79 was finally obtained. This study implied that this method is applicable for classification of vegetation cover types for large areas.

A Classification of Tidal Flat Wetland Vegetation Combining Phenological Features with Google Earth Engine

Abstract:The composition and distribution of wetland vegetation is critical for ecosystem diversity and sustainable development. However, tidal flat wetland environments are complex, and obtaining effective satellite imagery is challenging due to the high cloud coverage. Moreover, it is difficult to acquire phenological feature data and extract species-level wetland vegetation information by using only spectral data or individual images. To solve these limitations, statistical features, temporal features, and phenological features of multiple Landsat 8 time-series images obtained via the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform were compared to extract species-level wetland vegetation information from Chongming Island, China. The results indicated that (1) a harmonic model obtained the phenological characteristics of wetland vegetation better than the raw vegetation index (VI) and the Savitzky–Golay (SG) smoothing method; (2) classification based on the combination of the three features provided the highest overall accuracy (85.54%), and the phenological features (represented by the amplitude and phase of the harmonic model) had the greatest impact on the classification; and (3) the classification result from the senescence period was more accurate than that from the green period, but the annual mapping result on all seasons was the most accurate. The method described in this study can be applied to overcome the impacts of the complex environment in tidal flat wetlands and to effectively classify wetland vegetation species using GEE. This study could be used as a reference for the analysis of the phenological features of other areas or vegetation types.

Vegetation Classification Model Based on High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

Abstract:Based on a SPOT-5 image, this study built knowledge pool of vegetation spectral information, adopted classification algorithm of decision tree, proposed a vegetation classification model based on their spectral information and classified the vegetation of Nanjing. The results showed that the overall accuracy was 86.95% and Kappa coefficient was 0.8287. Then the classification model was validated by using an IKONOS image of Yuhuatai region and was improved through combining the textural information. The classification overall accuracy was increased to 92.70% and Kappa coefficient was increased to 0.8648.

Abstract:Vegetation cover is of great significance in understanding climate change process due to its vital role in controlling water and carbon cycles. The properties of vegetation's surfaces are usually estimated by remotely sensed data through regression models or physical-based models, which simulates the interactions of solar radiation with the vegetation medium. In real domain, the spectral responses measured by the sensor in forested area are strongly influenced by the different understory natural conditions that limit the possibility of applying both retrieval methods to predict overstory vegetation parameters. Understory information is therefore needed for estimating trees' parameters; moreover from a biodiversity point of view and perspective of forest management, understory represents a critical component of forest ecosystem that needs a better characterization. An experiment has been conducted using hyperion and panchromatic QuickBird data to explore the status of different vegetation's understory under a sparse forest in the Longmenhe Nature Reserve, China. Understory vegetation information of study area is classified into five classes. The novel aspect of the method is the integration of spectral (hyperspectral) domain fusion and spatial domain fusion techniques within a multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network model. Real data from the experiment on a limited ground as well as hyperion and QuickBird data are used as input dataset. A nonlinear artificial neural network achieved a classification accuracy of 80% despite the presence of co-occurring mid-story and understory vegetation. The achieved results show that this method is able to identify the different vegetation information under the tree canopy. Our studies suggest that it is necessary to incorporate the geographic and vegetation community prior information to further improve the accuracy in order to monitor understory vegetation.
Land Use Classification of Typical Ground Objects in Qinhuai River Basin Based on Multi Temporal Landsat8 OLI Data

Abstract:Multi-temporal Landsat 8 OLI image were utilized to extract thematic information of land use based on the study area-Qinhuai river basin which is located at southern hilly region of China. We first conduct the landuse spectrum sampling. Then the optimal index extraction model was selected for each class, based on the spectrum sampling statistical results. Finally, a decision tree classification model with hierarchical extraction features was formed. The research suggested that:①By means of plant phenology, multi-temporal remote sensing data has a good effect in distinguishing pappy field and forest land;②Pappy field and dry land staggeredly distributed in Qin-huai River basin. The pappy field is mainly located at Qinhuai River depression. The difference between pappy filed and dry land is most obious in summer, so it is the best time in extracting these information. Short wave infra-red band is absorbed by the water body,We can use this band for distinguishing the pappy field and dry land;③The farmland and non farmland can be distinguished by NDVI, but there is some building land with high vegetation cov-erage which is mis-classified with farm land. BSI can be used to remove these building land from farmland;④Su-pervised classification has a good effect in distinguishing building land and bare land; ⑤The overall accuracy of Decision tree classification model is 23. 1% higher than supervised classification result.
