Abstract:In our article (1), we proposed that loss of taste receptor function in mammals is directly related to feeding specializations. This conclusion was based, in part, on our finding that loss of taste receptor function is widespread in species of the order Carnivora that feed exclusively on meat. Zhao and Zhang (2) believe that this proposed relationship is unwarranted and provide several examples that they argue undercut it. We argue that the examples they cite generally support rather than refute our conclusion. First, Zhao and Zhang (2) point out that two exclusive meat-eaters in our study have not (yet) lost functional sweet taste receptor genes ( Tas1r2 ). Our hypothesis is that loss of sweet taste … [↵][1]1To whom correspondence may be addressed. E-mail: pjiang{at}monell.org or beauchamp{at}monell.org. [1]: #xref-corresp-1-1
