Abstract:Tri-methylammonium-butane sulfonate (TMBSA) ionic liquid (IL) catalyzed efficiently acetylation of acetic anhydride with various alcohols, hydroxyesters and phenols, under solvent-free conditions was described as a novel method. [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid (1.0 mol%) is able to promote quantitative acetylation at low temperature, in high conversion and selectivity (≥95%). The process is highly effective, environmentally benign, and very selective. Furthermore, [TMBSA][HSO 4 ] ionic liquid was conveniently separated with the products and easily recycled to catalyze acetylation reaction again with excellent yields.

Abstract:An efficient, clean and facile protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds catalysed by task specific ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium acetate in an aqueous medium has been developed. The reactions proceed at room temperature and high to excellent yields were afforded. The work-up procedure is very simple. The ionic liquid could be recycled for 10 runs without noticeably loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Rapid and efficient acetylation of alcohols and phenols with acetic anhydride is performed in the presence of economical Brønsted acidic ionic liquids that bear a propanesulfonic acid group on a morpholinium cation as catalysts under solvent-free conditions. [MMPPA][HSO4] (N-methylmorpholinium propanesulfonic acid ammonium hydrogensulfate) was proven to be the most active catalyst, and after removal of water, it could be recycled and reused for up to four times without a noticeable decrease in catalytic activity.

Abstract:The novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized strong Brønsted acidic ionic liquid has been prepared and its catalytic activities were investigated through the acetalization. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction with the average yield over 90% under solvent-free condition at room temperature. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, a small amount of usage, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions and reusability are the key features of this methodology. The novel catalyst also has great potential for the green process.

Abstract:A series of hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquids were synthesized and used as catalysts and reaction medium for direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from methanol and carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl-functionalized basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide (CH) is an effective catalyst with high selectivity (95.2%) to DMC under mild conditions as compared with other similar ionic liquids. The ionic liquid can be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the relationship between the catalytic reactivity and OH-functional group was discussed and the mechanism of this synthetic reaction was proposed according to the experimental results and previously reported literatures.

Abstract:The novel ionic liquid with multi-SO3H groups has been synthesized through the simple procedure and its catalytic activity for the oxathioacetalization was investigated carefully at room temperature under solvent-free condition. Abstract:A highly efficient procedure has been developed for the conjugate addition of amines to electron deficient alkenes. The novel ionic liquid [HO3S-bPy][FeCl4] with both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites has been synthesized successfully for the reactions. The results show that the catalyst was very efficient for the conjugate addition of amines to electron deficient alkenes with excellent yields in several minutes. This method has several key features including operational simplicity, no need of any solvent, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, reusability, excellent chemoselectivity, and wide applicability.

Abstract:Choline chloride·xZnCl2 (x=1–3) or benzyltrimethylammonium chloride·2ZnCl2 have been used as efficient and recyclable catalysts for protection of carbonyls to 1,3-dioxolanes and 1,3-dioxanes at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. FT-IR investigation demonstrates the four ionic liquids have similar Lewis acid strength, which is in agreement with the activities observed in the acetalization reaction. The catalytic system choline chloride·2ZnCl2 can be reused up to five times without appreciable loss of activity. The simple procedures as well as easy recovery and reuse of this novel catalytic system are expected to contribute to the development of more benign acetalization procedure of carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:A sulfonyl‐containing ammonium‐based Brønsted acid ionic liquid was prepared and used as a liquid heterogeneous catalyst for organic reactions. The unique macroscopic phase heterogeneity of the IL in the reaction system not only ensures an excellent catalytic activity of the IL catalyst but also avoids the use of organic reaction solvents. The catalyst system is applicable for a wide range of reactions.

Abstract:Under mild conditions and without any additional organic solvent, esterification of alcohols by carboxylic acids could be carried out in a halogen-free Bronsted acidic ionic liquid, N-methyl-2pyrrolidonium methyl sulfonate ([NMP](+) CH3SO3-). Good conversion rates and high selectivities were obtained, especially for esterification of ethanol by acetic acid, and the liquid esters formed a separate phase that was decanted. The ionic liquid could be reused after removal of water under vacuum.

Abstract:Under mild conditions and without any additional organic solvent, esterification of alcohols by carboxylic acids could be carried out in three new halogen-free Brønsted acidic ionic liquids, 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate, 1-(4-sulfonic acid) butylpyridinium hydrogen sulfate and N-(4-sulfonic acid)butyl triethylammonium hydrogen sulfate. Especially for esterification of ethanol by acetic acid, good conversion rate and high selectivity were obtained, and the liquid esters formed a separate phase that was decanted. Abstract:Lewis-Brnsted combined basic ionic liquids were successfully synthesized. Their catalytic activity for the condensation of aldehydes/ketones with ethyl cyanoacetate was also investigated. The results showed that these combined basic ionic liquids possess very high activity for Knoevenagel condensation. Different aromatic aldehydes reacted with cyanoacetate to give the corresponding products in 85%～99% yields. It was found that protonated solvents had higher activity than other solvents. This solvent effect was probably caused by the activation of carbonyl through hydrogen bond. The combined basic ionic liquids could be reused for 3 times without decrease of activity.

Abstract:A new room temperature ionic liquid (IL) (2-hydroxyethyl)-trimethyl-ammonium (S)-2-pyrrolidinecarboxylic acid salt ([Choline][Pro]) has been synthesized from biorenewable and nontoxic raw materials (choline chloride and L(-)-proline) in a simple and relative green route. The IL has been demonstrated to be the efficient catalyst of the direct aldol reactions between ketones and aromatic aldehydes in water at room temperature. The aldol products can be obtained with good yields and the IL in aqueous phase can be separated easily and reused. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Brønsted acidic ionic liquids based on imidazolium cation were employed as a series of environmentally benign catalysts and mediums in the alcoholysis of acetonitrile to synthesize ester. The results showed that Brønsted acidic ionic liquid [HSO3-pmim]HSO4 was an efficient catalyst and medium for the alcoholysis of acetonitrile which could be recycled easily without obvious decline in catalytic activity, the highest yield could reach 85%.
