Abstract:The microstructural changes and phase transformations of tin nanoparticles during electrochemical sodiation were studied with a nanosized sodium ion battery using in situ transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the first sodiation process occurred in two steps; that is, the crystalline Sn nanoparticles were initially sodiated via a two-phase mechanism with a migrating phase boundary to form a Na-poor, amorphous Na(x)Sn alloy (x ~ 0.5), which was further sodiated to several Na-rich amorphous phases and finally to the crystallized Na(15)Sn(4) (x = 3.75) via a single-phase mechanism. The volumetric expansion was about 60% in the first step and 420% after the second step. However, despite the huge expansion, cracking or fracture was not observed, which is attributed to the second step of the single-phase sodiation that accommodates large portion of the sodiation-induced stress over the entire particle. Excellent cyclability was also observed during the reversible sodiation/desodiation cycles, showing great potential of Sn nanoparticles as a robust electrode material for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Ultra-fine, porous, tin oxide–carbon (SnO2/C) nanocomposites are fabricated by a molten salt method at 300°C, and malic acid is decomposed as the carbon source. In situ synthesis is favourable for the combination of carbon and SnO2. The structure and morphology are confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, specific surface-area measurements, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Examination of TEM images reveals that the SnO2 nanoparticles are embedded in the carbon matrix, with sizes between 2 and 5nm. The electrochemical measurements show that the nanocomposite delivers a high capacity with good capacity retention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, due to the combination of the ultra-fine porous structure and the carbon component.

Abstract:Electrodeposition of Sn from SnCl2-1-butylpyridinium chloride(BPC) ambient temperature molten salt electrolytes was studied. The SnCl2-BPC binary salts melted at ambient temperatures. The conductivity and the viscosity of 33.3 mol% SnCl2 melt were 29.5 mS.cm(-1) and 7.4 mPa.s at 130 degrees C, respectively. Cyclic voltammograms on Pt electrode shower that the deposition potentials of Sn in the 33.3 mol% SnCl2 and the 66.7 mol% SnCl2 melts are about -0.65 V and 0.07 V vs. Sn(II)/Sn(0), respectively. The ionic species in the melt were also investigated by using the computer simulation method. The major ionic specie in the 33.3 mol% SnCl2 melt is SnCl3- and that in the 66.7 mol% SnCl2 melt is Sn2Cl5-. The optimized structures of SnCl3- and Sn2Cl5- calculated by the ab initio molecular orbital method were C-3v and C-2, respectively.

Abstract:Finely dispersed tin alloy/oxide composites were synthesized via the reduction of tin oxide by aluminum under high-energy ball-milling. The morphology and crystal structure of the resulting samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical measurements reveal that Sn3Co/Al2O3 composite has higher initial efficiency and better cycle performance than Sn/Al2O3. The Sn3Co/Al2O3 composite electrode containing LA132 binder exhibited a reversible capacity about 540mAhg−1 with good capacity retention. On the other hand, it is found that the influence of binder type on the electrode performance is remarkable.

Abstract:This paper reports the large-scale synthesis of carbon-coated tin (Sn–C) nanorods through a facile solvothermal carbonization approach by using Sn nanorods as templates and ethanol as a solvent. The as-synthesized Sn–C nanorods have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The Sn–C anode, which exhibits relatively higher initial Coulombic efficiency and lithium storage capacities, is more attractive than the previously reported tin oxide or sulfide anodes. The superior performance of the Sn–C nanorods makes it a promising anode material in high-energy density batteries.

Abstract:Tin dioxide(SnO2) nanoparticles were successfully filled into the cavity of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) by using a novel molten salt filling method at a low temperature,and the mass fraction of SnO2 is up to 60%.The SnO2@CNTs showed higher lithium ions storage capacity and better charge-discharge cycling performance than SnO2 nanoparticles,which is attributed to the unique structure of SnO2@CNTs: the CNTs buffer the destroy coming from the volume charge during the charge-discharge process,provide more space for the storage of lithium ions and enhance the conductivity of composite material.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline LiFe1-xSnxPO4 (0 <= x <= 0.07) samples are synthesized using SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O as dopant via an inorganic-based sol-gel method. The dependency of the physicochemical and electrochemical properties on the doping amount of tin are systemically worked out and regular changes are revealed. In the whole concentration range, the chemical valence of Fe2+ is not basically changed whereas tin is found in two different oxidation states, namely +2 and +4. The replacement of Fe2+ by supervalent Sn4+ would lead to electron compensation. Under the synergetic effects between the charge compensation and the crystal distortion, the electrical conductivities for the bulk samples first increase and then decrease with the increasing amount of Sn doping. Upon the doping amount, the apparent lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and the electrochemical performance also display the similar trends. The doping is beneficial to refine the particle size and narrow down the size distribution, however optimizing the doping amount is necessary. Compared with other samples, the sample with a doping amount of about 3 mol% delivers the highest capacities at all C-rates and exhibits the excellent rate capability due to the high electrical conductivity and the fast lithium-ion diffusion velocity. Abstract:27 nm thick hematite nanodiscs have been prepared by a facile solvothermal method. The growth of Fe2O3 nanodiscs follows the precipitation–dissolution–growth mechanism, and the (001) facets are preferentially exposed since (001) facets are the densest and therefore most stable facets. In particular, outstanding rate and cycling capabilities have been demonstrated for the nanodiscs due to the reduced Li+ diffusion distance and enhanced reactivity of the nanosized structures.

Abstract:This paper describes a new synthesis and lithium ion charge-discharge property of tin dioxide (SnO(2)) hollow nanocubes. SnO(2) is one of the best-known anode materials for lithium-ion battery application because of its high lithiation-delithiation capacity. Hollow nanostructures with high surface area are preferred, because they accommodate large volume changes and maintain the structural stability of electrode materials during charge-discharge cycles. The SnO(2) hollow cubes made in this study had a discharge capacity of up to 1783 mA h g(-1) for the initial cycle and 546 mA h g(-1) after 30 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C between 0.02 and 2.0 V (vs Li/Li(+)).

Abstract:In order to systematically characterize the effects of ion doping on Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) through the molten salt method, different metallic compounds with varying ionic radii doped into LTO were investigated. The results show that doped ions (Al3+, Ni2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and F-) with similar ionic radius as Li+, Ti4+ or O2- ions can enter into LTO, which leads to smaller particle size than pure LTO, therefore, increasing the specific surface area and shortening Li+ transfer path of LTO. However, La3+ with a much larger ionic radius cannot enter into LTO. Ion doping can enhance the intrinsic conductivity of LTO, thus improving the electrochemical performance of LTO. As the ionic radii of Fe2+ and Fe3+ are the closest to those of Li+ and Ti4+, Fe3O4 doped LTO exhibits the best electrochemical performance, an excellent first discharge capacity of 269.3 mAh.g(-1) at the 0.15 degrees C, good high-rate capability (123.4 mAh.g(-1) at 10 degrees C); even after 300 discharge/charge cycles, the discharge capacity is 141.1 mAh.g(-1), gives an excellent cycle performance with 12.4% loss of capacity at 1 degrees C rate. Due to these factors, Fe3O4 is the most suitable metallic compound doped in LTO via molten salt method.

Abstract:A nanocrystalline lithium-rich cathode material (Li[Li0.26Ni0.11Mn0.63]O2) has been prepared by a molten salt method. By using KCl–NaCl as the reaction media, the synthetic temperature can be reduced to 700 °C. The prepared material was investigated using XRD, SEM and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling, and shows highly crystallized shapes with average particle sizes of 50–100 nm. Due to its low dimensional, highly-crystalline and regularly shaped layered structure, the cathode material exhibits greatly improved capability and cycling performance when compared with the pristine cathode.

Abstract:Co3O4 doped Li4Ti5O12 compounds with protuberant nanoparticles are synthesized by molten salts method. Co3O4 doping greatly decreases particle size of Li4Ti5O12. Combining with the result of Fe2O3 doped Li4Ti5O12 and as interstitial and substitutional atoms, transition metal atoms homogenously distribute in the crystal lattice of Li4Ti5O12 and do not change the cubic spinel structure of Li4Ti5O12. As the substitutional atoms, the mixed valence of Co3+ and Co2+ co-exists in Li4Ti5O12 causing O32e or Li8a,16d vacant sites thereby improving the electronic conductivity of Li4Ti5O12. The doped Li4Ti5O12 exhibits a large first discharge capacity (173.5 mAh g-1) at 0.2 C rate, 144.8 mAh g-1 at 1 C rate with the capacity loss of 8.8% after 100 charge/discharge cycles and 106 mAh g-1 at 10 C. EIS analysis indicates the doped Li4Ti5O12 electrode exhibits lower charge transfer resistance and lithium ions diffusion resistance, as optimized amounts of Co3O4 produces appropriate lattice distortion and interstitial atoms in Li4Ti5O12.

Abstract:Two-dimensional Sn-based metal compounds (e.g. SnS, SnS2 and SnO2) are exceptionally attractive due to their excellent ion intercalation response and are suitable for use in energy storage devices (e.g. lithium -ion batteries and supercapacitors). However, the application of these dichalcogenides in Li -ion batteries is hindered by limitations in large-scale solution synthesis of SnS nanobelts. In this study, we developed a universal hydrothermal approach for the synthesis of SnS nanobelts and proposed an underlying mechanism for the formation reaction. When used as anode materials for lithium -ion batteries, SnS nanobelts maintain a discharge capacity of 889.9 mAhg(-1) after 50 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A/g. The nanobelts also exhibit high electrochemical performance, high rate capacity, and high reversible capacity. These results demonstrate that SnS nanobelts are potential anode materials for highperformance energy storage applications. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Preparation and electrochemical properties of nanosized tin dioxide electrode material by sol-gel process

Abstract:Nanosized SnO2 powders were prepared by sol-gel process using inorganic salt as a precursor. The tin oxide powders obtained at different calcinating temperatures (300-700 ℃) were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), infrared spectrum (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as well. The results indicate that well-crystallized nanosized SnO2 powders with a structure of rutile and uniform size about 10 nm can be obtained when the calcinating is carried out at 550 ℃ for 3 h using the method. The electrochemical properties of nanosized SnO2 powders as anode material for lithium ion batteries were also studied in detail. The results show that nanosized SnO2 is a candidate of anode material for lithium ion batteries with reversible capacity more than 372 mA*h/g after ten cycles and low voltage for Li+ intercalation and de-intercalation.

Abstract:The synthesis of tin-titanate nanotubes (Sn-titanate) by reacting hydrogen titanate (H-titanate) with a tin salt through ion adsorption-incorporation is reported. The interactions between tin(II) ions and H-titanate are thoroughly investigated. Tin ions can be easily adsorbed by H-titanate, owing to its large surface area and lattice spacing, and the negatively charged layered structures. With Sn-titanate nanotubes as precursors, Sn-doped TiO2 nanoparticles are prepared by annealing and are investigated as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, which show much enhanced capacity and rate capability. Such improved electrochemical properties of Sn-doped TiO2 benefit from structural characteristics such as the small size of the constituent nanoparticles, high crystallinity, and uniform tin doping. This synthetic strategy towards Sn-doped TiO2 anode materials, thus offers the synergistic effect of combining the advantages of TiO2 (cycle life and rate) and SnO2 (high capacity).
Chemical Prelithiation/Presodiation Strategies Toward Controllable and Scalable Synthesis of Microsized Nanoporous Tin at Room Temperature for High‐Energy Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Abstract Porous Sn (PSn) has aroused extensive attention as an advanced anode for sodium‐ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and small volume expansion. However, as a low‐melt metal, the preparation of PSn at room temperature is a difficult problem. Herein, universal chemical prelithiation/presodiation strategies are reported to rapidly synthesize PSn from commercial Sn powders at ambient temperature. The recyclable pre‐metallation solvents are selected by redox potential analysis to react with Sn to form alloy precursors in a short time. Benefiting from the application of delithiation/desodiation agents with suitable proton concentrations, PSn perfectly inherits the Sn skeleton from precursors. With this method, porous Al, Pb, Bi, and Sb are successfully produced. Finally, the half‐cell with PSn anode prepared by presodiation strategy achieves a great rate property (663 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) and prominent cycling performance with 71% capacity retention after 7500 cycles (502 mAh g −1 ) at 5 A g −1 . This work may contribute to the controllable synthesis of other porous metals at room temperature.

Preparation and electrochemical lithiation of tin-based materials

Abstract:The two tin-based materials were prepared by chemical deposition in aqueous solution, crystallized Sn6O4(OH)4 and amorphous SnO2. The electrochemical lithiation of the two materials were investigated. Sn6O4(OH)4 showed better performance of lithiation and de-lithiation than SnO2. The electrochemical reversible capacities of Sn6O4(OH)4 and SnO2 in the first cycle were 659 and 269 mAh·g-1 respectively. The coulomb efficiencies of Sn6O4(OH)4 were larger than 90 % in the first cycle and 95 % in the third cycle. The formation of Li2O in the first lithiation of Sn6O4(OH)4 and SnO2 can compensate the expansion of Sn as it alloyed with Li. The electrochemical cyclic performance when the Sn6O4(OH)4 sample was charge and discharge in the range of 0-1 V were better than in the range of 0-1.2 V.
