Abstract:The application of transition metal fluorides as energy-dense cathode materials for lithium ion batteries has been hindered by inadequate understanding of their electrochemical capabilities and limitations. Here, we present an ideal system for mechanistic study through the colloidal synthesis of single-crystalline, monodisperse iron(ii) fluoride nanorods. Near theoretical capacity (570 mA h g−1) and extraordinary cycling stability (>90% capacity retention after 50 cycles at C/20) is achieved solely through the use of an ionic liquid electrolyte (1 m LiFSI/Pyr1,3FSI), which forms a stable solid electrolyte interphase and prevents the fusing of particles. This stability extends over 200 cycles at much higher rates (C/2) and temperatures (50 °C). High-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals intricate morphological features, lattice orientation relationships and oxidation state changes that comprehensively describe the conversion mechanism. Phase evolution, diffusion kinetics and cell failure are critically influenced by surface-specific reactions. The reversibility of the conversion reaction is governed by topotactic cation diffusion through an invariant lattice of fluoride anions and the nucleation of metallic particles on semicoherent interfaces. This new understanding is used to showcase the inherently high discharge rate capability of FeF2. The application of metal fluorides as cathodes for lithium ion batteries has been hindered by inadequate understanding of their electrochemical capabilities. Reversible conversion reaction in iron fluoride nanocrystals is shown to be due to topotactic cation diffusion and nucleation of metallic particles.

Abstract:The hydrated iron fluoride (Fe 3 F 8 ¬∑2H 2 O) with mixed valence cations is successfully synthesized through a rapid electrolytic synthesis route for the first time using low-concentration HF solution as fluorine source and cheap carbon steel as iron source. By controlling the value of current density, submicron structured hydrated iron fluoride with different grain sizes is obtained. The thermal behavior of Fe 3 F 8 ¬∑2H 2 O under air atmosphere is studied. The product cooling to room temperature after heat treatment is FeF 2.2 (OH) 0.8 ¬∑0.33H 2 O, which is determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC). The evaluation of the electrochemical performance of FeF 2.2 (OH) 0.8 ¬∑0.33H 2 O as a cathode for lithium batteries shows that it has an initial discharge capacity as high as 580 mAh¬†g ‚ąí1 in a wide voltage range of 1.0‚Äď4.5¬†V at a current density of 20 mA¬†g ‚ąí1 , but the cycle performance is not very satisfactory, only 170 mAh¬†g ‚ąí1 after 50 cycles.

Abstract:Transition metal fluorides display the combination of high capacity and high electrode potential that are essential to boosting the energy density of lithium ion batteries. However, their application as cathode materials has been hindered by an incomplete understanding of their electrochemical capabilities and limitations. Herein, we present a system of single crystalline, monodisperse iron (II) fluoride nanorods and detail how their morphology and uniformity make them ideal for mechanistic study. High-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals intricate morphological features, lattice orientation relationships, and oxidation state changes that redefine the conversion reaction with unprecedented spatial resolution. We first introduce the presence of surface specific reactions and examine how they critically influence phase evolution, diffusion kinetics and cell failure. Next, we examine how the reversibility of the conversion reaction is governed by topotactic cation diffusion through an invariant lattice of fluoride anions and the nucleation of metallic particles on semi-coherent interfaces. We will focus on how each mechanistic feature establishes new principles for improving reaction hysteresis, kinetics and reversibility and how this new holistic understanding can inform the more effective application of metal fluorides. To ensure a pertinent result, ex-situ data was extracted from coin cells that deliver near theoretical capacity (570 mAh g-1) and extraordinary cycling stability (>90 % capacity retention after 100 cycles). This exceptional performance was enabled solely through the use of an ionic liquid electrolyte. Using a combination of impedance spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we explain how the solid electrolyte interphase forming ability of this electrolyte precludes the major failure mechanisms associated with transition metal fluorides. We conclude this talk by examining the complementary nature of this cathode electrolyte pairing, particularly with regards to high-temperature cycling. Figure 1

Abstract:A comprehensive strategy for the morphological control of octahedral and spindle Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) via microwave-assisted adjustment is proposed in this research. Afterward, in situ copyrolysis under N2 atmosphere contributes to the fabrication of two shape-maintained FeF3·0.33H2O nanostructures (named O-FeF3·0.33H2O and S-FeF3·0.33H2O, respectively) with confined hierarchical porosity and graphitized carbon skeleton. The lithium storage performances for the MOF-derived octahedral O-FeF3·0.33H2O and spindle S-FeF3·0.33H2O composites are investigated, and the prospective lithium storage mechanism is discussed. As a result, the main product of the porous O-FeF3·0.33H2O structure is found to be a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries owing to its advantageous electrochemical capability. Even after being cycled over 1000 times at 2 C (1 C = 237 mAh g-1), the capacity attenuation rate of the as-prepared O-FeF3·0.33H2O electrode is as low as 0.039% per cycle. The combination of proper octahedral morphology and highly graphitized carbon modification can not only enhance the conductivity of the cathode but also promote the diffusion of Li+ effectively. The remarkable performance of octahedral O-FeF3·0.33H2O can be confirmed by the Li-ion diffusion coefficient (DLi+) calculation analysis and kinetics analysis of lithium storage behavior.
Electrochemical Behavior of Iron(III) Fluoride Trihydrate As a Cathode in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:The tetragonal compound FeF3(H2O)3 is synthesized through a facile liquid-phase method. FeF3(H2O)3/C is prepared by mechanical milling with carbon black and investigated for its application as a cathode material. This material exhibits two types of thermodynamic lithiation scheme, at 3.0 and 1.5 V, which correspond to a Li+-intercalation process (1 Li+) and a conversion reaction (>1 Li+), respectively. A reversible capacity of about 300 mAh g−1 can be achieved at a current density of 10 mAg−1. In particular, the intercalation/deintercalation process above 2.0 V exhibits good cycling performance and rate properties. The relatively high diffusion coefficients (Dcv=7.27×10−13–1.07×10−12 m2 s−1) of Li+ through the FeF3(H2O)3 lattice are calculated by using the Randles–Sevcik equation, which reveal fast Li+-ion migration in this process. In contrast, the conversion reaction is strongly dependent on the current density. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicates that the FeF3(H2O)3/C cathode forms a relatively stable solid electrolyte interphase film, with a low Schottky contact resistance in comparison with that of the FeF3/C cathode, which makes it a potential candidate for cathode applications.

Abstract:Exploring high performance cathode materials is essential to realize the adoption of Li-ion batteries for application in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. FeF3, as a typical iron-based fluoride, has been attracting considerable interest due to both the high electromotive force value of 2.7 V and the high theoretical capacity of 237 mA h g(-1) (1e(-) transfer). In this study, we report a facile low-temperature solution phase approach for synthesis of uniform iron fluoride nanocrystals on reduced graphene sheets stably suspended in ethanol solution. The resulting hybrid of iron fluoride nanocrystals and graphene sheets showed high specific capacity and high rate performance for iron fluoride type cathode materials. High stable specific capacity of about 210 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 0.2 C was achieved, which is much higher than that of LiFePO4 cathode material. Notably, these iron fluoride/nanocomposite cathode materials demonstrated superior rate capability, with discharge capacities of 176, 145 and 113 mA h g(-1) at 1, 2 and 5 C, respectively.

Abstract:A tactful ionic-liquid (IL)-assisted approach to in situ synthesis of iron fluoride/graphene nanosheet (GNS) hybrid nanostructures is developed. To ensure uniform dispersion and tight anchoring of the iron fluoride on graphene, we employ an IL which serves not only as a green fluoride source for the crystallization of iron fluoride nanoparticles but also as a dispersant of GNSs. Owing to the electron transfer highways created between the nanoparticles and the GNSs, the iron fluoride/GNS hybrid cathodes exhibit a remarkable improvement in both capacity and rate performance (230 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and 74 mAh g(-1) at 40 C). The stable adhesion of iron fluoride nanoparticles on GNSs also introduces a significant improvement in long-term cyclic performance (115 mAh g(-1) after 250 cycles even at 10 C). The superior electrochemical performance of these iron fluoride/GNS hybrids as lithium ion battery cathodes is ascribed to the robust structure of the hybrid and the synergies between iron fluoride nanoparticles and graphene.

Abstract:A fluoride-based cathode (FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O) for lithium batteries, the synthesis of which has been reported recently (C. L. Li et al. Adv. Mater. 2010, 22, 3650), is described in terms of structure, morphology, and performance. A self-assembled mesoporous morphology connected with a high specific surface area is obtained through the soft template role of the ionic liquid. The fluoride exhibits a one-dimensional tunnel structure produced by continuous hexagonal cavities, in which hydration water molecules are located. The high Li-intercalation activity of carbon-free FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O is expected to be associated with various factors, including electrolyte-infiltratable mesoporosity, wide Li+-insertable channels, and medium conductivities. A single solid-solution reaction mechanism is indicated by potentiostatic intermittent titration technique and ex situ X-ray diffraction at different reactive potentials.

Abstract:Iron fluoride is one of the representatives of multi-electron cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, which has attracted extensive attention. However, its poor rate performance and volume adaptability during charge-discharge cycles hinder its practical application. To solve these defects, hollow yolk-like spheres iron fluoride with micro-nano architectures has been synthesized by a new self-templated solvothermal method. Fe-glycerate precursor with hollow yolk-like spheres was first prepared and subsequent performing ion exchange with NH4F as fluorine source to form iron fluoride. The formation mechanism of the hollow yolk-like spheres Fe-glycerate is attributed to "Kirkendall effect". The hollow yolk-like spheres iron fluoride delivers a superior rate performance of 163 mAh g(-1) at high current density of 712 mA g(-1), with a low capacity fading rate of 0.58% per cycle for 40 cycles. Moreover, it displays a high discharge capacity of 306 mAh g(-1) at 71.2 mA g(-1). The superior electrochemical performance is attributed to the large specific surface area, short electrons and ions migration distance and hollow structure for electrolyte penetration deriving from the unique micro-nano hierarchical hollow yolk-like spheres structure. Abstract:Lithium‐Ion Batteries In article number 2309629, Yingqiang Wu, Li Wang, Fengli Bei, Xiangming He, and co‐workers present a LiMnxFe1‐xPO4 solid‐state synthesis method using LiFePO4 and nano LiMn0.7Fe0.3PO4 that coexist at room temperature, happen at low sintered temperatures (300–600 °C) and complete at high sintered temperatures (700∼800 °C). Following sintering at high temperatures, LiMnxFe1‐xPO4 achieved the uniform fusion of Mn and Fe ions. This discovery provides valuable insights into understanding ion diffusion in LiMnxFe1‐xPO4.

Abstract:Open framework materials as battery electrodes are drawing much more attention recently in view of the requirement on further improving energy storage and power densities, as well as use of a nonlithium cation (such as Na+ and Mg2+) transport. In this work, we show a novel top-down approach to prepare fluoride-based open framework (HTB-type FeF3·0.33H2O) as Li- and Na-storage cathode material, characterized by a topotactically solid–solid phase transformation and particle nanosizing with a 100% conversion yield. During this process, the typical Fe-based octahedral chains which are isolated in FeF3·3H2O precursor are well preserved but are connected with each other, triggered by the alleviated release of hydration water in an ionic liquid (IL) ambience. A comprehensive IL-based scenario to synthesize nanostructured open framework fluorides involving dissolution–precipitation, ionothermal and solid–solid breakdown methods is discussed, mainly depending on how the FeF6 octahedra are produced and linked.

Abstract:Iron fluoride cathodes have been attracting considerable interest due to their high electromotive force value of 2.7 V and their high theoretical capacity of 237 mA h g(-1) (1 e(-) transfer). In this study, uniform iron fluoride hollow porous microspheres have been synthesized for the first time by using a facile and scalable solution-phase route. These uniform porous and hollow microspheres show a high specific capacity of 210 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 C, and excellent rate capability (100 mA h g(-1) at 1 C) between 1.7 and 4.5 V versus Li/Li(+) . When in the range of 1.3 to 4.5 V, stable capacity was achieved at 350 mA h g(-1) at a current of 50 mA g(-1) .

Abstract:Iron fluoride cathode material for rechargeable Li-ion batteries has attracted extensive attention in recent years due to its high theoretical energy density (712 mAh g(-1), 1951 Wh kg(-1)) and plentiful sources. However, its poor electronic conductivity, sluggish kinetics and volume effect during cycling cause the fast capacity fading. In this work, a hierarchical nanoparticle iron fluoride has been successfully prepared by reverse micelle soft-template method to improve the sluggish kinetics of ions diffusion and electrons transport in iron fluoride. Hierarchical nanostructure not only promotes the sufficient infiltration and soak of electrolyte, but also provides a path for the rapid diffusion of lithium ions. As cathode material for batteries, the as-prepared hierarchical nanoparticle material delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 526.9 mAh g(-1) and a long-term cycle performance with a low capacity fading rate of 0.55% per cycle for 100 cycles at 23.7 mA g(-1), which outperforms most FeF3/C materials. Even up to 600 mA g(-1), it displays a superior rate performance with discharge capacity of 207.6 mAh g(-1). Furthermore, the simple adjustment of the alcohols-water ratio realizes the fabrication of iron fluoride samples with different morphology, microscopic dimension and crystal structure. The results show that the reverse micelle soft template method is a cost-efficient, tunable and potential feasible strategy for the preparation of high-performance iron fluoride material and it can also be extended to the synthesis of other nanoscale metal fluorides. In this work, FeF3·3H2O nano-flakes precursor with high crystallinity and flower-like morphology is synthesized successfully, by a liquid precipitation method using Fe(NO3)3·9H2O and NH4HF2 as raw materials. The formation and the crystal growth mechanisms of the FeF3·3H2O precursors are investigated and discussed. After different temperature heat-treatment and followed by ball-milling with Super P, the as-prepared FeF3.0·33H2O/C and FeF3/C nanocomposites are used as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries. The FeF3.0·33H2O/C nanocomposite exhibits a noticeable initial specific capacity of 187.1 mAh g−1 and reversible specific capacity of 172.3mAhg−1 at .1C within a potential range of 2.0–4.5V. The capacity retention is as high as 97.33% after 50 cycles. Combined with HRTEM test, it confirms that the hydration water is not harmful but useful, namely, the tunnel phase formed with the hydration water is crucial to unobstructed Li+ diffusion, and therefore leading to excellent electrochemical performances.

Abstract:Ultrafine beta-LiFe5O8 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized at the low temperature of 140 degrees C through a hydrothermal method. The average particle size is about 5 nm with a fairly narrow size distribution. The saturation magnetization (M-s), remanent magnetization (M-r), and coercivity (He) could be determined to be 25.23 emu g(-1), 3.95 emu g(-1), and 301 Oe, respectively. The Teflon cell using the prepared nanoparticles as active cathode material shows an initial discharge capacity of about 162 mA h g(-1). The as-prepared ultrafine beta-LiFe5O8 nanoparticles exhibit higher capacity than any other known lithium ferrites, which may be ascribed to the unique microstructure and smaller particle size achieved by the hydrothermal synthesis procedure.
Ultrasmall Iron Fluoride Nanoparticles Embedded in Graphitized Porous Carbon Derived from Fe‐Based Metal Organic Frameworks As High‐Performance Cathode Materials for Li Batteries

Abstract:Iron-based metal organic framework (MOF) MIL-53 is used as a precursor and self-template to synthesize a 3D porous carbon/FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O composite in situ. We find that the organic ligands in iron-containing MOFs can convert into highly graphitized carbon with the catalysis of central Fe atoms. The FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoparticles formed after fluorination and dehydration are surrounded by highly graphitized carbon. In the composite, the graphitized 3D porous carbon can provide passageways for electron transport and ultrasmall FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoparticles facilitate the diffusion of Li ions. The composite shows excellent performance for the Li storage. A capacity of 86 mAhg(-1) can be reached at an ultra-high rate of 20 C. Even after 300 charge discharge cycles at 5 C, the capacity remains at 113 mAhg(-1).
