Abstract:Hydrogen energy is a clean, carbon-free and potential future energy source. Hydrogen generation by electrochemical water splitting becomes a promising approach, which is highly dependent on the electroactivity of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts . The transition metal phosphides (TMPs) become promising electrocatalysts due to low overpotential, good electrochemical stability and high electrocatalytic activity. This review mainly summarizes HER mechanisms, preparation methods, electrocatalytic assessment and microstructure regulation of TMPs. The electrochemical properties of five typical TMPs (Ni x P y , Co x P y , Mo x P y , W x P y and Fe x P y ) under different phosphating degrees are intensively compared. Since the electrocatalytic performance of current TMPs is insufficient for industrial applications, new design and preparation methods for nanostructure-controlled TMPs electrocatalysts are proposed. In particular, the development of element-doped, self-supporting nanomaterials is the future development direction of TMPs electrocatalysts that can be applied in the whole pH range.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy is regarded as an auspicious future substitute to replace fossil fuels, due to its environmentally friendly characteristics and high energy density. In the pursuit of clean hydrogen production, there has been a significant focus on the advancement of effective electrocatalysts for the process of water splitting. Although noble metals like Pt, Ru, Pd and Ir are superb electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), they have limitations for large-scale applications, mainly high cost and low abundance. As a result, non-precious transition metals have emerged as promising candidates to replace their more expensive counterparts in various applications. This review focuses on recently developed transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts for the HER in alkaline media due to the cooperative effect between the phosphorus and transition metals. Finally, we discuss the challenges of TMPs for HER.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution can effectively alleviate the troublesome global energy crisis by converting solar energy into the chemical energy of hydrogen. In order to realize efficient hydrogen generation, a variety of semiconductor materials have been extensively investigated, including TiO 2 , CdS, g‐C 3 N 4 , MOFs, etc. In recent years, to achieve higher photocatalytic performance and reach the level of large‐scale industrial applications, photocatalysts decorated with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have shone brightly because of the low‐cost, stable physical and chemical properties and substitution for precious metals of TMPs. This review highlights the preparation methods and properties associated with photocatalysis of TMPs. Moreover, the H 2 generation efficiency of photocatalysts loaded with TMPs and the roles of TMPs in catalytic systems are also studied systematically. Apart from being co‐catalysts, several TMPs can also serve as host catalysts to boost the activity of photocatalytic composites. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of TMPs are put forward, which is valuable for future researchers to expand the application of TMPs in photocatalytic directions and to develop more active photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Searching a sustainable way to efficiently produce hydrogen (H2) is critical to realizing the "hydrogen economy", which may resolve the global energy and environmental issues nowadays. The conversion of solar energy to hydrogen energy based on photocatalytic water splitting is an ideal technology for environmental-friendly and economically producing H2. Exploring high-performance and earth-abundant cocatalysts that can replace noble metal-based cocatalysts is essential to achieving highly efficient and cost-effective photocatalytic H2 production. In recent years, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been regarded as promising candidates to replace noble metal-based cocatalysts for photocatalytic H2 production. This review presents a panorama of the latest progress in the developments of TMPs for photocatalytic H2 production. Concretely, this review starts with the functions of TMPs in photocatalytic H2 production, followed by the synthetic strategies of TMPs and the loading methods of TMPs on semiconductors. Then the application and mechanism of the common TMPs in photocatalytic H2 production are discussed in detail, including iron phosphides, cobalt phosphides and nickel phosphides. Lastly, we provide a comprehensive conclusion and outlook on the major challenges and opportunities for better developments in the future research. It is reasonable to believe that the TMPs is a rising star in photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Recently, sustainable energy alternatives have attracted the scientific community and policymakers as concerns over global warming and depletion of fossil fuels have increased significantly. Substituting H2 gas as a primary source for our daily energy consumption under the guideline of the hydrogen economy concept has not progressed as anticipated because of inadequate efficiency associated with the generation (electrolyzer) and utilization (fuel cell) devices. A critical challenge is to design strategies for fabricating electrocatalysts derived from earth-rich elements to address cost and performance concerns. In this context, nanostructured transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as highly efficient electrocatalysts. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of TMPs is ascribed to their suitable charge transfer from metal to phosphorous as well as the easy transfer process of a proton-coupled electron during hydrogen evolution reaction. This overview focuses on the materials fabrication and the associated challenges in the design and development of TMP-based catalysts.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts plays an important role in energy‐related electrocatalysis fields. Transition‐metal phosphides (TMPs) possess a series of advantages, such as high conductivity, earth‐abundance reserves, and good physicochemical properties, therefore arousing wide attention. In this review, the electrochemical activity origin of TMPs, allowing the rational design and construction of phosphides toward various energy‐relevant reactions is first discussed. Subsequently, their unique energy‐related electrocatalysis nature toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and others is highlighted. Then, the TMPs' synthetic strategies are analyzed and summarized systematically. Finally, the existing key issues, countermeasures, and the future challenges of TMPs toward efficient energy‐related electrocatalysis are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The current state of global green H 2 demand from water required an efficient and robust catalyst to mitigate greenhouse-gas emissions to the atmosphere. The transition metal phosphides (TMPs) based catalysts are found to be stand out an alternative to the state-of-art Pt/C catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, systematic desertion is required to assess the recent development and progress towards TMPs based catalyst for HER for thoughtful knowledge to encourage the develop an efficient, robust, and durable catalyst. The current progress made to improve the efficiency, and durability of as-synthesized TMPs based catalyst for HER, include nanostructure synthesis, integration with supports materials, and hybrid structure synthesis. The realization of the individual role of each constituting element of the TMPs-based catalyst is the fundamental pillar to develop an efficient electrocatalyst. Herein, an overview is presented of recent research progress on TMPs for electrochemical HER. The review elaborated on the fundamental aspect of HER kinetics at the TMPs-based catalyst surface, the effect of composition, and pH for 3d (Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) to higher transition metal (Mo, W, Rh, Ru, Pd, Ir, and Pt) phosphide. The current review also systematically compiled an experimental and theoretical study on HER. Furthermore, we also highlight the urgent need for pre and post-analysis to evaluate the true identity active site and the durability of the TMPs. Finally, the conclusions are drawn with future opportunities and challenges for the development of transition TMPs based.

Abstract:The exploitation of cheap and efficient electrocatalysts is the key to make energy‐related electrocatalytic techniques commercially viable. In recent years, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts have gained a great deal of attention owing to their multifunctional active sites, tunable structure, and composition, as well as unique physicochemical properties. This review summarizes the up‐to‐date progress on TMPs in energy‐related electrocatalysis from diversified synthetic methods, ingenious‐modulated strategies, and novel applications. In order to set forth theory–structure–performance relationships upon TMPs, the corresponding reaction mechanisms, electrocatalytsts' structure/composition designs and desired electrochemical performance are jointly discussed, along with demonstrating their practical electrocatalytic applications in overall water splitting, metal–air batteries, lithium–sulfur batteries, etc. In the end, some underpinning issues and research orientations of TMPs toward efficient energy‐related electrocatalysis are briefly proposed.

Abstract:To rapidly develop water-splitting technology for hydrogen generation, it is essential to create efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as effective electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their unique electronic structure and high catalytic activity. The TMP-based heterostructure catalysts exhibit superior OER activity compared to individual TMP catalysts as heterostructures not only increase the number of active sites in the catalysts but also facilitate the adsorption of intermediates. This review begins by introducing the catalytic mechanism and key parameters of OER, followed by the preparation methods of different types of TMP-based heterostructures. Additionally, this article discusses four primary strategies to improve OER performance of TMP-based heterostructures and the current challenges. Finally, this article makes a conclusion and perspective in utilizing TMP-based heterostructure catalysts for OER.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H 2 ) emerges as a highly promising contender for replacing conventional fossil fuels due to its high combustion heat value and net-zero greenhouse gas emission. Photocatalytic H 2 generation through semiconductor-based water splitting represents a clean and sustainable technology in the field. Developing highly efficient and abundant source semiconductor materials, along with co-catalysts, is paramount in achieving the industrial-level H 2 evolution by photocatalysis technology. In recent years, transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as powerful co-catalysts for photocatalytic reactions due to their cost-effectiveness, abundant reserves in the earth's crust, and favorable physicochemical properties, thus offering a viable alternative to conventional precious metal materials. In this review, we first provide a concise historical overview and outline the structure of TMPs. The synthetic strategies of TMPs are subsequently systematically analyzed based on diverse phosphorus sources. Additionally, this review provides a comprehensive summary of the recent research endeavors conducted on TMPs as potential photocatalytic co-catalysts for efficient hydrogen generation through photocatalysis. Eventually, this review briefly addresses the prevailing key concerns, proposed countermeasures, and forthcoming challenges associated with enhancing the efficiency of photocatalytic H 2 evolution in TMPs.

Abstract:Considerable attention on sustainable clean energy resources has led to the development of a plethora of catalytic materials, specifically geared toward water electrolysis. Among various developed catalysts, noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts have shown promising performances for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). However, their high price and scarcity have always been roadblocks to the commercialization of the water‐splitting technology. Recently, transition metal phosphides (TMP) and phosphates (TMPi) have emerged as alternative electrocatalysts for the OER and HER under neutral conditions; water splitting under a neutral conditions eco‐friendly and free of the corrosion issues that are present for acidic or alkaline conditions. Herein, we present the recent progress in TMP(i) based water splitting under neutral conditions, particularly focusing on the synthetic strategies and design concepts for improved catalytic performances. Challenges and outlook for further development of these promising catalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs), as non-precious metal compounds, have attracted growing interest as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. They have been studied as robust catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at a wide pH range. In particular, Fe, Co, Ni-based phosphides also showed high performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solutions. This review focuses on the strategies developed for preparing TMPs with enhanced HER or OER performance. These strategies include tuning the stoichiometric ratio of metal and phosphorous, hetero-atom doping or alloying, forming nano-carbon/TMPs hybrids and engineering special structures by modifying surface wettability, forming hetero-structure interfaces and generating porous structures. In terms of elemental doping strategy, the reported performance of Fe, Co, Ni-based alloying phosphides as bifunctional catalysts for both HER and OER are also summarized. Abstract:Large-scale hydrogen (H2) production is an essential gear in the future bioeconomy. Hydrogen production through electrocatalytic seawater splitting is a crucial technique and has gained considerable attention. The direct seawater electrolysis technique has been designed to use seawater in place of highly purified water, which is essential for electrolysis, since seawater is widely available. This paper offers a structured approach by briefly describing the chemical processes, such as competitive chloride evolution, anodic oxygen evolution, and cathodic hydrogen evolution, that govern seawater electrocatalytic reactions. In this review, advanced technologies in transition metal phosphide-based seawater electrolysis catalysts are briefly discussed, including transition metal doping with phosphorus, the nanosheet structure of phosphides, and structural engineering approaches. Application progress, catalytic process efficiency, opportunities, and problems related to transition metal phosphides are also highlighted in detail. Collectively, this review is a comprehensive summary of the topic, focusing on the challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Abstract Confronted with growing energy crisis and environmental challenges, water electrolysis for hydrogen production can provide high-density, clean and renewable energy, but limited by sluggish kinetics of two half reaction, anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction(HER). Noble-metal-based electrocatalysts can decrease overpotential and accelerate kinetics dramatically, but limited by its scarcity and high cost. Transitional metal catalysts are abundant, low cost and have potential to become excellent catalyst due to unique electronic structure. Beginning from basic principle of electrocatalysis, this paper focuses on the synthesis method of transitional metal phosphide (TMP), and further discusses modification methods of TMP, including phase tuning, element doping/alloying, interfacial/structural engineering and three-dimensional architecture. Finally, the challenges of TMP are analyzed and future research focuses are prospected.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides are efficient catalytic materials for electrochemical hydrogen production because of their high catalytic activity and good stability. However， realizing their large-scale application in electrolytic water hydrogen evolution needs further improvement on the catalytic performance. Based on the composition of transition metal phosphides， their properties were summarized in terms of the metal/phosphorus （M/P） stoichiometric ratio. In addition， the common preparation methods of transition metal phosphides were introduced， and the influence of the modification methods such as element doping， structural defects， interface engineering and coupling of carbon materials， microstructure regulation， and wettability improvement on the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution were reviewed in detail as well. The development trend of transition metal phosphides is also prospected from the aspects of exploiting new phosphorus source， standardizing electrochemical tests and regulating the crystal planes.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted attention in electrocatalytic hydrogen production because of their multiple active sites, adjustable structures, complex and variable composition, and distinctive electronic structures. However, the catalytic performance of pure TMPs in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is not ideal. Fortunately, this situation can be changed by atom doping engineering because atom doping can efficaciously adjust the electronic structure, Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) and d-band center to enhance the kinetics of catalytic reactions. Thus, atom doping engineering has aroused widespread interest. This review examines, analyzes and summarizes our previous work and that of others on atom doping engineering, including the activity origin of doped TMPs, doping with nonmetals (B, S, N, O, F, etc.), doping with metals (Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Mo, Al, etc.) and codoping with nonmetals and metal atoms, as well as direct doping and synergetic doping, doping methods and the resulting HER properties. Finally, the key problems and future directions for development of atom doping in TMPs are discussed. This review will aid the design and construction of high-performance nonnoble metal catalysts for the HER and other electrocatalytic processes.Graphical abstractAtoms doping can effectively change the electronic structure to improve catalytic performance of catalysts. Abstract:Sustainable production of H-2 through electrochemical water splitting is of great importance in the foreseeable future. Transition-metal metaphosphates (TMMPs) have a three-dimensional (3D) open-framework structure and a high content of P (which exists as PO3-), and therefore have been recognized as highly efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the bottleneck of electrochemical water splitting. Furthermore, TMMPs can also contribute to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline and neutral media by facilitating water dissociation, and thus, overall water splitting can be achieved using this kind of material. In this timely review, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis of TMMPs and their applications in OER and HER. We present a brief introduction of the structure and synthetic strategies of TMMPs in the first two parts. Then, we review the latest progress made in research on TMMPs as OER, HER, and overall water-splitting electrocatalysts. In this part, the intrinsic activity of TMMPs as well as the current strategy for improving the catalytic activity will be discussed systematically. Finally, we present the future opportunities and the remaining challenges for the application of TMMPs in the electrocatalysis field.

Abstract:The urgent development of economically practical and sustainable electrocatalysts to accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for solving the pressing issues related to carbon dioxide emissions. Because of their platinum-like catalytic efficiency, excellent stability, and multidimensional structure of their crystal phases, molybdenum phosphides have emerged as extremely promising HER electrocatalysts. In this account, we begin with a meticulous explication of the hydrogen-generating process by water electrolysis, followed by an examination of the criteria used to assess HER catalytic activity. Also, the role of the phosphorus component and synthetic routes of molybdenum phosphides is presented in HER applications. Moreover, in recent years, various strategies designed to enhance the HER performance of molybdenum phosphides have been introduced, encompassing state-of-the-art techniques such as the fabrication of heterostructures, hetero-atom doping, hybrid structures involving carbon materials, and defect engineering. Furthermore, the theoretical studies based on density functional theory (DFT) are mentioned for HER. The paper concludes by emphasizing the current challenges and auspicious prospects in advancing electrocatalysts for hydrogen production, with a dedicated focus on catalysts based on molybdenum phosphides.
