Abstract:: There has been considerable focus on the synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures because of their extensive structures, unique properties, and wide applications. The morphological control of metal oxide nanostructures is of interest for tuning their performance and expanding their range of applications. Electrochemical methods have become a common way of controlling the morphologies of metal oxides, owing to their simple operation, ease of control, and flexible modes. This paper presents a brief overview of our research in the electrochemical synthesis and morphological control of metal oxide nanostructures. We will also discuss the crystal growth mechanism and the morphology control of different metal oxides during the electrochemical deposition process, which lays the foundation for orientation design and fabrication of functional materials.

Abstract:Nanoscale metal oxide materials have been attracting much attention because of their unique size- and dimensionality-dependent physical and chemical properties as well as promising applications as key components in micro/nanoscale devices. Cupric oxide (CuO) nanostructures are of particular interest because of their interesting properties and promising applications in batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, gas sensors, bio sensors, nanofluid, catalysis, photodetectors, energetic materials, field emissions, superhydrophobic surfaces, and removal of arsenic and organic pollutants from waste water. This article presents a comprehensive review of recent synthetic methods along with associated synthesis mechanisms, characterization, fundamental properties, and promising applications of CuO nanostructures. The review begins with a description of the most common synthetic strategies, characterization, and associated synthesis mechanisms of CuO nanostructures. Then, it introduces the fundamental properties of CuO nanostructures, and the potential of these nanostructures as building blocks for future micro/nanoscale devices is discussed. Recent developments in the applications of various CuO nanostructures are also reviewed. Finally, several perspectives in terms of future research on CuO nanostructures are highlighted.

Abstract:In this review, we provide a broad overview of solution-phase synthesis of transition metal oxide nanocrystals (NCs), including a substantial catalog of published methods, and a unifying classification and discussion. Prevalent subcategories of solution-phase synthesis are delineated and general features are summarized. The diverse morphologies achievable by solution-phase synthesis are defined and exemplified. This is followed by sequential consideration of the solution-phase synthesis of first-row transition metal oxides. The common oxides of Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are introduced; major crystal lattices are presented and illustrated; representative examples are explained; and numerous synthesis formulae are tabulated. Following this presentation of experimental studies, we present an introduction to theories of NC nucleation and growth. Various models of NC nucleation and growth are addressed, and important concepts determining the growth and structure of colloidal NCs are explained. Overall, this review provides an entry into systematic understanding of solution-phase synthesis of nanocrystals, with a reasonably comprehensive survey of results for the important category of transition metal oxide NCs.

Abstract:Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides exhibit unique optical, electrical, magnetic, and chemical properties, rendering them a bright application prospect in high-performance smart devices. Given the large variety of both layered and non-layered 2D metal oxides, the controllable synthesis is the critical prerequisite for enabling the exploration of their great potentials. In this review, recent progress in the synthesis of 2D metal oxides is summarized and categorized. Particularly, a brief overview of categories and crystal structures of 2D metal oxides is firstly introduced, followed by a critical discussion of various synthesis methods regarding the growth mechanisms, advantages, and limitations. Finally, the existing challenges are presented to provide possible future research directions regarding the synthesis of 2D metal oxides. This work can provide useful guidance on developing innovative approaches for producing both 2D layered and non-layered nanostructures and assist with the acceleration of the research of 2D metal oxides.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have drawn continuous research attention because of their unique electrical, optical, and magnetic properties different from that of bulk and nanoparticles, as well as their potential applications in mesoscopic research and nanodevices. The main challenge in this area is how to precisely control the sizes, dimensionalities, compositions, and crystal structures in nanoscale, which may serve as a powerful tool for the tailoring of physical/chemical properties of materials in a controllable way. Here, we review the advances in the solution-based routes to prepare 1D nanostructures. Particularly, three systems of MnO2, rare-earth compounds, and silicates have been chosen to show the synthetic strategy under hydrothermal conditions. As the main theme, a rolling mechanism has been given special attention to present a relative general understanding of the growth of various transition-metal oxide (TMO) 1D nanostructures under solution conditions.

Abstract:Conductive metal–organic frameworks ( c ‐MOFs) have aroused extensive attention due to their excellent properties by integrating the features of both conductive and porous crystalline materials. Recent investigations in miniaturization of c ‐MOFs into nanostructured conductive MOFs ( nc ‐MOFs) endow them with additional advantages such as reduced diffusion distance, accelerated mass/electron transfer, enhanced active site exposure, and accessibility, further widening their applications with reinforced performances compared to the conventional bulk counterparts. Herein, a timely review on the latest achievements in the field of nc‐ MOFs is provided. First, we systematically introduce the synthetic strategies for producing nc ‐MOFs with controllable morphologies and compositions. Second, the enhanced performance of nc ‐MOFs in electrocatalysis, supercapacitors, batteries, sensors, and photocatalysis is highlighted. Finally, a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the synthesis and applications of nc ‐MOFs is presented. It is expected that this review will shed light on the future development of nc ‐MOFs with promising application potential.

The distinct advantage of nanosized materials lies in their large surface area to volume ratio, which endows them with enhanced stability and significant functional characteristics. Among these, metal oxide nanomaterials have garnered significant attention due to their substantial energy bandgaps and high exciton binding energies, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including antimicrobial activity and optoelectronics. This review delves into the synthesis methods of various metal oxides, emphasizing the advantages and drawbacks of physical, chemical, and biological approaches. Specifically, it focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and applications of single metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), such as zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver oxide (Ag 2 O), as well as binary or composite metal oxides like ZnO/Ag 2 O nanocomposites. Through this comprehensive literature review, readers will gain insights into the fabrication techniques and explore the intrinsic properties of both single and composite metal oxide NPs, thereby broadening their understanding of these innovative materials and their potential technological impacts.

Abstract:Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) have enormous applications such as in optical devices, purification systems, biomedical systems, photocatalysis, photovoltaics etc. In this review, we have explored a stable and efficient synthesis protocol of particularly four MONPs: titanium dioxide (TiO2), tin oxide (SnO2), tungsten oxide (WO3) and zinc oxide (ZnO) for getting desired chemical composition, nanostructure, and surface properties. The selection of an efficient synthesis process is a key factor that significantly influences the efficacy of the MONPs. The chemical synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) via sol–gel route is an effective method to produce high-quality MONPs in comparison to other physical and chemical methods. Sol–gel synthesis is one of the simple, fastest and economically less expensive method, and has its own advantages like low processing temperature, homogeneity of the produced material and formation of the complex structures or composite materials. We believe that this detailed review will provide an insight into sol–gel synthesis of MONPs along with their characterization and diverse applications.

Abstract:In the last decade, 1D semiconductor nanostructures attracted much attention due to their potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, sensor, and biotechnology. Among various synthetic strategies, the electrochemical method is a relatively simple and effective way to prepare 1D semiconductor nanostructures. Moreover, electrochemical methods can afford precise processes for controlling the compositions and morphologies of the nanostructured materials. In this review, we present a systematic description of the electrochemical synthesis of oriented and hierarchical quasi-1D semiconducting nanostructures. The main contents containing: (1) electrodeposition of materials in hard porous membranes templates with 1D pore geometry or under assistance of the capping reagents for oriented nanowires/nanorods film; (2) multi-step template replication methods, two-step synthetic strategy and anodization methods for uniform nanotube arrays; (3) electrochemical synthetic strategies for complex hierarchical nanostructured films. Additionally, we give a brief introduction about the applications of these quasi-1D semiconducting nanostructures.

Abstract:Cupric oxide (CuO), having a narrow bandgap of 1.2 eV and a variety of chemophysical properties, is recently attractive in many fields such as energy conversion, optoelectronic devices, and catalyst. Compared with bulk material, the advanced properties of CuO nanostructures have been demonstrated; however, the fact that these materials cannot yet be produced in large scale is an obstacle to realize the potential applications of this material. In this respect, chemical methods seem to be efficient synthesis processes which yield not only large quantities but also high quality and advanced material properties. In this paper, the effect of some general factors on the morphology and properties of CuO nanomaterials prepared by solution methods will be overviewed. In terms of advanced nanostructure synthesis, microwave method in which copper hydroxide nanostructures are produced in the precursor solution and sequentially transformed by microwave into CuO may be considered as a promising method to explore in the near future. This method produces not only large quantities of nanoproducts in a short reaction time of several minutes, but also high quality materials with advanced properties. A brief review on some unique properties and applications of CuO nanostructures will be also presented.

Abstract:Metal nanostructures with the size range of 1-100 nm, featuring unique physical and chemical properties that arise from their quantum size effects and high surface areas, have been the focus of recent scientific research. Among a variety of synthetic methods, the photoreduction method represents a promising strategy for controlled synthesis of metal nanostructures with different sizes, shapes and composition. In this review, the latest development on synthesis of metal nanostructures by UV radiation, γ-ray radiation, and laser radiation methods will be overviewed with specific examples to illustrate how to generate metal nanostructures with unusual structural specialty and complexity. The perspectives on combination of this method with solution processing and interfacial reactions are given.

Abstract:Considerable effort has been made to design, fabricate, and manipulate nanostructured materials by innovative approaches. The precise control of nanoscale structures will pave the way not only for elucidating unique size/shape-dependent physicochemical properties but also for realizing new applications in science and technology. Nanotechnology offers unprecedented opportunities for improving our daily lives and the environment in which we live. This review mainly describes our recent progress in the design, fabrication, and modification of nanostructured semiconductor materials for environmental applications. Their potential applications in the field of energy are briefly introduced. The scope of this article covers a variety of semiconductor materials, focusing particularly on TiO(2)-based nanostructures (e.g., pure, doped, coupled, nanoporous, mesoporous, hierarchically porous, and ordered mesoporous TiO(2)). The preparation of nanoparticles, hierarchical nanoarchitectures, thin films, and single crystals by sol-gel, microemulsion, hydrothermal, sonochemical, microwave, photochemical, and nanocasting methods is discussed.

Abstract:Recently, nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (nanoMOFs), which leads to the discovery of a variety of properties not observed in their bulk counterparts, have attracted tremendous attention. To be specific, while possessing the properties of bulk MOF materials including high surface area, structural diversity and tailorability etc., nanoMOFs also have some unique advantages, such as accelerated adsorption/desorption kinetics and accessibility to the internal active sites. Moreover, due to their very small sizes and good biocompatibility, nanoMOFs have been widely investigated in biomedicine. In addition, not limited to MOF nanoparticles, their assembly to MOF-based 1-D nanomaterials have also been investigated for catalysis, energy and membrane separation applications. In this review, we first summarize the synthetic strategies of uniform and monodisperse nanoMOFs, and then the intrinsic size-dependent properties towards the most important applications are highlighted as well. Furthermore, the challenges and future prospects of the synthesis and application of nanoMOFs are briefly provided, which we hope will contribute to further push the development of nanoMOF science. Abstract:Over the last two decades, oxide nanostructures have been continuously evaluated and used in many technological applications. The advancement of the controlled synthesis approach to design desired morphology is a fundamental key to the discipline of material science and nanotechnology. These nanostructures can be prepared via different physical and chemical methods; however, a green and ecofriendly synthesis approach is a promising way to produce these nanostructures with desired properties with less risk of hazardous chemicals. In this regard, ZnO and TiO2 nanostructures are prominent candidates for various applications. Moreover, they are more efficient, non-toxic, and cost-effective. This review mainly focuses on the recent state-of-the-art advancements in the green synthesis approach for ZnO and TiO2 nanostructures and their applications. The first section summarizes the green synthesis approach to synthesize ZnO and TiO2 nanostructures via different routes such as solvothermal, hydrothermal, co-precipitation, and sol-gel using biological systems that are based on the principles of green chemistry. The second section demonstrates the application of ZnO and TiO2 nanostructures. The review also discusses the problems and future perspectives of green synthesis methods and the related issues posed and overlooked by the scientific community on the green approach to nanostructure oxides.

Abstract:Magnesium oxide remained interesting from long time for several important phenomena like; defect induced magnetism, spin electron reflectivity, broad laser emission etc. Moreover, nanostructures of this material exhibited suitability for different kinds of applications ranging from wastewater treatment to spintronics depending upon their shape and size. In this way, researchers had grown nanostructures in the form of nanoparticles, thin films, nanotubes, nanowalls, nanobelts. Though nanoparticles and thin films are well known form of nanostructures and wide variety of synthesis approaches are available, however, limited methodology for other nanostructures are available. In order to grow these nanostructures in an optimized way an understanding of these methods is essential. Thus, this review article depicts an overview of various approaches for design of different kinds of nanostructures.

Abstract:TiO2 nanomaterial is promising with its high potential and outstanding performance in photocatalytic environmental applications, such as CO2 conversion, water treatment, and air quality control. For many of these applications, the particle size, crystal structure and phase, porosity, and surface area influence the activity of TiO2 dramatically. TiO2 nanomaterials with special structures and morphologies, such as nanospheres, nanowires, nanotubes, nanorods, and nanoflowers are thus synthesized due to their desired characteristics. With an emphasis on the different morphologies of TiO2 and the influence factors in the synthesis, this review summarizes fourteen TiO2 preparation methods, such as the sol-gel method, solvothermal method, and reverse micelle method. The TiO2 formation mechanisms, the advantages and disadvantages of the preparation methods, and the photocatalytic environmental application examples are proposed as well.

Abstract:Nanotechnology can be defined as the science and engineering involved in the design, synthesis and application of materials and devices on the nanometer scale. It is not in itself a single emerging discipline, but rather a meeting of several traditional sciences such as chemistry, physics, materials science, biology and engineering to bring together the required expertise needed to develop these new technologies. The unique properties of nanoscale materials provide benefits in remediation, pollution prevention, and efficient use of resources; however, the greatest contribution to green chemistry is likely to be the new manufacturing strategies available through nanoscience. So, the present review mainly focuses on the synthesis of semiconductor CuO nanomaterials from different starting materials by adopting various routes such as vapor-solid, vapor-liquid-solid, solid-liquid, etc. to reveal the morphological features of the precursor.
