Abstract:Connection reliability is one important service level agreement (SLA) parameter for a customer and should be carefully considered in survivable WDM networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and simultaneously benefit a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of shared risk link group (SRLG) failures, a novel dynamic differentiated shared path-protection algorithm (DDSP) in WDM mesh networks is proposed. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and partial SRLGdisjoint protection, DDSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DDSP not only can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers, but also can achieve significant performance gain and lead to remarkable reduction in blocking probability.

Abstract:The notion of service level agreements (SLA) has been proposed to capture qualitatively and quantitatively defined performance contracts between service providers and their customers. How to provision satisfiable connections for customers according to their SLA parameters to avoid penalty as well as minimizing cost is one of the main concerns for a service provider. Connection reliability and restoration time are two important SLA parameters for a customer, and should be carefully considered in survivable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks. A sound scheme should guarantee customers' reliability and reduce restoration time while benefiting a service provider in resource efficiency. Under the SLA constraints and the assumption of single link failure, we first investigate a partial link-disjoint protection (PLDP) and analyze its availability and average restoration time. We then propose a dynamic constraint shared path protection (DCSP) algorithm in WDM mesh networks. Based on the basic ideas of the K-shortest path algorithm and PLDP, DCSP can provide differentiated services for customers according to their SLA parameters while being favorable for reducing average restoration time and optimizing resource utilization. Simulation results show that DCSP can efficiently guarantee the specific SLA requirements of customers with a slight increase in the blocking probability while still achieving spare resource sharing and restoration time optimizations.

Abstract:The paper investigates protection for dynamic multicast traffic. In order to improve network resource utilization efficiency and reduce block probability, similar to unicast shared protection, protecting wavelengths can be shared among different multicast connections. The paper explores a shared protection algorithm for dynamic multicast traffic (SPDMT). Performance of the algorithm is assessed through simulation and compared with dedicated protection. Simulation results show that SPDMT uses less network resources and has lower block probability than dedicated protection because SPDMT shares protecting wavelengths among multicast connections.

Abstract:The protection design is a key issue in survivable wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. Most researches focused on protecting unicast traffic against the failure of a single network component such as a link or a node. In this paper, we investigate the protection scheme for multicast traffic in meshed WDM optical networks under dual-link failure consideration, and propose a novel protection algorithm called shared segment protection with reprovisioning (SSPR). Through dynamically adjusting link-cost according to the current network state, SSPR establishes a primary light-tree and corresponding link-disjoint backup segments for each multicast connection request. A backup segment can efficiently share wavelength capacity of its working tree or the common resource of other backup segments. Capacity reprovisioning establishes new segments for the vulnerable connections after a link failure and tolerates following link failures. The simulation results show that SSPR not only can make good use of wavelength resources and protect multicast sessions against any single-link failure, but also can greatly improve the traffic restorability in the event of dual-link breakdown.

Abstract:It has been widely recognized that it is of paramount importance to protect multicast connections against single link failure in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel consideration when provisioning survivable multicast sessions in WDM mesh networks. This consideration captures the average number of destination nodes that are affected by a single link failure. We propose two routing schemes that efficiently support the new consideration. We demonstrate by simulation the performance of the two routing schemes.

Abstract:This paper studies the protection problem in meshed WDM networks.A novel Mixed Shared-Path Protection Scheme(MSPPS)is proposed to survive the single-fiber-link failure.Differing from the previous Shared-Path Protection Scheme(SPPS),MSPPS considers the overlapping relationships between primary and backup paths and it allows some primary paths and backup paths of other primary paths to share the common wavelength resources if the corresponding constraints caa be satisfied.Simulation results show that MSPPS outperforms the previous SPPS in the performance of resource utilization ratio and blocking probability.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of protecting multicast sessions in mesh wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks against single link failures, for example, a fiber cut in optical networks. First; we study the two characteristics of multicast sessions in mesh WDM networks with sparse fight splitter configuration. Traditionally, a multicast tree does not contain any circles, and the first characteristic is that a multicast tree has better performance if it contains some circles. Note that a multicast tree has several branches. If a path is added between the leave nodes on different branches, the segment between them on the multicast tree is protected. Based the two characteristics, the survivable multicast sessions routing problem is formulated into an Integer Linear Programming (ILP). Then, a heuristic algorithm, named the adaptive shared segment protection (ASSP) algorithm, is proposed for multicast sessions. The ASSP algorithm need not previously identify the segments for a multicast tree. The segments are determined during the algorithm process. Comparisons are made between the ASSP and two other reported schemes, link disjoint trees (LDT) and shared disjoint paths (SDP), in terms of blocking probability and resource cost on CERNET and USNET topologies. Simulations show that the ASSP algorithm has better performance than other existing schemes.

Abstract:We investigate the protection approach for dynamic multicast traffic under shared risk link group (SRLG) constraints in meshed wavelength-division-multiplexing optical networks. We present a shared protection algorithm called dynamic segment shared protection for multicast traffic (DSSPM), which can dynamically adjust the link cost according to the current network state and can establish a primary light-tree as well as corresponding SRLG-disjoint backup segments for a dependable multicast connection. A backup segment can efficiently share the wavelength capacity of its working tree and the common resources of other backup segments based on SRLG-disjoint constraints. The simulation results show that DSSPM not only can protect the multicast sessions against a single-SRLG breakdown, but can make better use of the wavelength resources and also lower the network blocking probability.
Multicast Protection with Differentiated Leaf Availability Requirements in WDM Mesh Networks

Abstract:Multicast protection strategies have been widely explored in current literature. However, the leaf availability requirements are not taken into account. In this paper, we investigated approaches and algorithms for establishing a multicast session with differentiated leaf availability requirements in WDM mesh network while protecting it against single link failure. An effcient and cost-effective heuristic is presented to solve the problem and is compared with two other schemes, one with no protection (Scheme I) and the other with dedicated protection (Scheme II). We also formulated a possible improvement of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results based on 14 node NSFNET topology and comparisons among these schemes are also discussed. The performance of an algorithm is measured in terms of Average Cost and Average Satisfaction Ratio. The improved algorithm shows much better performance than the other ones, thus achieving the goal of effectively establishing protected multicast sessions with differentiated destination availability requirements. Finally, through numerical simulation results, we find that some links are critical to the performance of the network. Increasing the availability and capacity of these links will greatly enhance the network performance. This result is helpful to network planning and design.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of survivable multicasting in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical mesh networks using optical-layer mixed-sharing protection. The term "mixed-sharing" refers to that both the schemes of "self-sharing" and "cross-sharing" are implemented to protect the multicast sessions. Each link on the primary tree(s) of a multicast session engrosses a wavelength channel. Under normal operation, the backup resources do not carry any traffic. So the backup resources of a multicast session may be. shared by that of other sessions in the network. In this paper, we formulate an optimization model of the mixed-sharing protection for a batch of multicast sessions. We can obtain the optimal primary trees and their backup resources by solving the formulation. Simulation results show that the scheme of mixed-sharing can improve the performance of protection.

Abstract:The advances in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology are expected to facilitate bandwidth-intensive multicast application by establishing a light-tree, which regards the source node as the root, and involves all the destination nodes. The light-tree is sensitive to failures, e.g., a single fiber cut may disrupt the transmission of information to several destination nodes. Thus, it is imperative to protect multicast sessions. In this work, we investigate the problem of protecting dynamic multicast sessions in mesh WDM networks against single link failures. Our objectives are to minimize the usage of network resources in terms of wavelength links for provisioning survivable multicast session, and to reduce the multicast session blocking probability. We propose two efficient multicast session protecting algorithms, called Optimal Path Pair based Removing Residual Links (OPP-RRL) and Source Leaf Path based Avoiding Residual Links (SLP-ARL), which try to reduce the usage of network resource by removing or avoiding residual links in the topology consisting of light-tree and its backup paths. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, we apply Integer Linear Programming (ILP) to generate an optimal solution. We also compare the proposed algorithms with existing algorithms through simulation. Simulation results indicate that the two proposed algorithms have better performance than other existing algorithms in terms of wavelength links required and network blocking probability. Furthermore, the solutions generated by the two proposed algorithms are quite close to the solutions generated by ILP in terms of the number of wavelength links required, when the network size is small.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors focus on studying the problem of survivable routing provisioning to prevent single link failure in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks, and propose a novel protection scheme called mixed shared path protection (MSPP). With MSPP, the authors define three types of resources: 1) primary resources that can be used by primary paths; 2) spare resources that can be shared by backup paths; and 3) mixed resources that can be shared by both the primary and the backup paths. In the proposed protection scheme, each connection is assigned a primary path and a link disjoint backup path. Differing from pervious protection schemes, MSPP allows some primary paths and backup paths to share the common mixed resources if the corresponding constraints can be satisfied. In this paper, the authors consider three types of path-based protection schemes, i.e., dedicated path protection (DPP), shared path protection (SPP), and MSPP, and evaluate their performance for both the static and the dynamic provisioning problems. Abstract:Network survivability is a crucial requirement in WDM mesh networks. In this paper, we systematically consider the problem of dynamic survivability with dynamic single link failure in WDM networks under dynamic traffic demands. Specifically, we investigate various protection schemes, such as dedicated path protection (DPP), shared path protection (SPP), dedicated link protection (DLP), shared link protection (SLP), and two restoration schemes, path restoration (PR) and link restoration (LR). Moreover, two new shared protection methods are proposed, i.e., SRLG-based shared link protection (SRLG-SLP) and SRLG-based shared path protection (SRLG-SPP). The SRLG (shared risk link group) constraint defines the availability of protection resources to a working path, which requires that any two working paths sharing the same risk of failure (or in the same SRLG) cannot share the same protection resources. Furthermore, in our study, we consider a more practical dynamic single-link failure model, in which the link-failure-interarrival time and link-failure-holding time are considered as two independent parameters. Based on this link-failure model, extensive simulations are done to analyze and compare the dynamic survivable performance of various protection and restoration schemes. Resource utilization, protection efficiency, restoration efficiency, and service disruption ratio are employed as survivable performance metrics versus traffic load, link-failure frequency, and link-failure reparation time to evaluate the survivable performance. Many meaningful results are given. In addition, we show that the developed SRLG-SLP and SRLG-SPP protection schemes perform very well in terms of protection efficiency and service disruption ratio, while sacrificing some performance in terms of resource utilization.

Abstract:This paper proposes a protection scheme for the WDM network. The emergence of WDM technology has provided an unprecedented opportunity to dramatically increase the bandwidth capacity of telecommunications networks. In protection schemes, there are spare resources reserved for each protected part while those resources are not used under normal conditions. So restoration usually has better resource utilization than protection. Shared protection means multiple protected parts share the same spare resource, while dedicated protection means each protected part has dedicated spare resource. So shared protection schemes usually have better resource utilization than dedicated resource utilization. The proposed method provides a good scheme and an effective framework for protection in WDM networks.
