Abstract:Motivated by a connection between semi-regular relative difference sets and mutually unbiased bases, we study relative difference sets with parameters (m,n,m,m/n) in groups of non-prime-power orders. Let p be an odd prime. We prove that there does not exist a (2p,p,2p,2) relative difference set in any group of order 2p^2, and an abelian (4p,p,4p,4) relative difference set can only exist in the group Z"2^2xZ"3^2. On the other hand, we construct a family of non-abelian relative difference sets with parameters (4q,q,4q,4), where q is an odd prime power greater than 9 and q=1(mod4). When q=p is a prime, p9, and p=1(mod4), the (4p,p,4p,4) non-abelian relative difference sets constructed here are genuinely non-abelian in the sense that there does not exist an abelian relative difference set with the same parameters.

Abstract:In this note, we consider relative difference sets with the parameter (m, 2, m - 1, m-2/2) in a group G relative to a subgroup N. In the splitting case, G = H x N, we give a lower bound for the size of the commutator group H', and we show that H can not have a homomorphic image which is generalized dihedral. In the non-splitting case, we prove that there is no (2n, 2, 2n - 1, n - 1) relative difference set, in a generalized dihedral group of order 4n, n > 1.

Abstract:We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. In the first generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are p-ary weakly regular bent. The second generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the second generalization seem to be new.

Abstract:Let p be a prime larger than 3 and congruent to 3 modulo 4, and let G be the non-abelian group of order p^3 and exponent p. We study the structure of a putative difference set with parameters (p^3,p^3-12,p^3-34) in G which is fixed by a certain element of order p in Aut(G). We then give a construction of skew Hadamard difference set in the group G for each prime p3 that is congruent to 3 modulo 4. This is the first infinite family of non-abelian skew Hadamard difference sets. Finally, we show that the symmetric designs derived from these new difference sets are not isomorphic to the Paley designs.

Constructing linked systems of relative difference sets via Schur rings

Abstract:In the present paper, we study relative difference sets (RDSs) and linked systems of them. It is shown that a closed linked system of RDSs is always graded by a group. Based on this result, we also define a product of RDS linked systems sharing the same grading group. Further, we generalize the Davis-Polhill-Smith construction of a linked system of RDSs. Finally, we construct new linked system of RDSs in a Heisenberg group over a finite field and family of RDSs in an extraspecial $p$-group of exponent $p^2$. All constructions of new RDSs and their linked systems are based essentially on a usage of cyclotomic Schur rings.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a relative of the Hermitian curve of degree $\sqrt{q}+1$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, which is a plane curve defined by \[(x^{\sqrt{q}}, y^{\sqrt{q}}, z^{\sqrt{q}})A {}^t \!(x,y,z) =0\] with $A \in GL(3, \mathbb{F}_q)$, and study their basic properties together with various examples. One of the basic properties is that the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-points of any relative of the Hermitian curve of degree $\sqrt{q}+1$

We then discuss relations of relative hyperbolicity for the group with respect to the two families, respectively. If the group is supposed to be hyperbolic relative to the two families, respectively, then we consider relations of relative quasiconvexity for a subgroup of the group with respect to the two families, respectively.

Abstract:We describe a new approach to relative p-adic Hodge theory based on systematic use of Witt vector constructions and nonarchimedean analytic geometry in the style of both Berkovich and Huber. We give a thorough development of phi-modules over a relative Robba ring associated to a perfect Banach ring of characteristic p, including the relationship between these objects and etale Z_p-local systems and Q_p-local systems on the algebraic and analytic spaces associated to the base ring, and the relationship between etale cohomology and phi-cohomology. We also make a critical link to mixed characteristic by exhibiting an equivalence of tensor categories between the finite etale algebras over an arbitrary perfect Banach algebra over a nontrivially normed complete field of characteristic p and the finite etale algebras over a corresponding Banach Q_p-algebra. This recovers the homeomorphism between the absolute Galois groups of F_p((pi)) and Q_p(mu_p^infty) given by the field of norms construction of Fontaine and Wintenberger, as well as generalizations considered by Andreatta, Brinon, Faltings, Gabber, Ramero, Scholl, and most recently Scholze. Using Huber's formalism of adic spaces and Scholze's formalism of perfectoid spaces, we globalize the constructions to give several descriptions of the etale local systems on analytic spaces over p-adic fields. One of these descriptions uses a relative version of the Fargues-Fontaine curve.

Abstract:Strongly regular graphs (SRGs) provide a fertile area of exploration in algebraic combinatorics, integrating techniques in graph theory, linear algebra, group theory, finite fields, finite geometry, and number theory. Of particular interest are those SRGs with a large automorphism group. If an automorphism group acts regularly (sharply transitively) on the vertices of the graph, then we may identify the graph with a subset of the group, a partial difference set (PDS), which allows us to apply techniques from group theory to examine the graph. Much of the work over the past four decades has concentrated on abelian PDSs using the powerful techniques of character theory. However, little work has been done on nonabelian PDSs. In this paper we point out the existence of \textit{genuinely nonabelian} PDSs, i.e., PDSs for parameter sets where a nonabelian group is the only possible regular automorphism group. We include methods for demonstrating that abelian PDSs are not possible for a particular set of parameters or for a particular SRG. Four infinite families of genuinely nonabelian PDSs are described, two of which -- one arising from triangular graphs and one arising from Krein covers of complete graphs constructed by Godsil \cite{Godsil_1992} -- are new. We also include a new nonabelian PDS found by computer search and present some possible future directions of research.

Abstract:We generalize the work of Roquette and Zassenhaus on the invariant part of the class groups to the relative class groups. Thereby, we can show some statistical results as follows. For abelian extensions over a fixed number field K, we show infinite Cp-moments for the Sylow p-subgroup of the relative class group when p divides the degree of the extension. For sextic number fields with A4-closure, we can show infinite C2-moments for the Sylow 2-subgroup of the relative class group when the extensions run over a fixed Galois cubic field.

Abstract:Consider the following classes of pairs consisting of a group and a finite collection of subgroups: $\mathcal{C}= \left\{ (G,\mathcal H) \mid \text{$\mathcal{H}$ is hyperbolically embedded in $G$} \right\}$ and $ \mathcal{D}= \left\{ (G,\mathcal H) \mid \text{the relative Dehn function of $(G,\mathcal H)$ is well-defined} \right\}.$ Let $G$ be a group that splits as a finite graph of groups such that each vertex group $G_v$ is assigned a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}_v$, and each edge group $G_e$ is conjugate to a subgroup of some $H\in \mathcal{H}_v$ if $e$ is adjacent to $v$. Then there is a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}$ of $G$ such that: $\bullet$ If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal C$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal C$. $\bullet$ If each $(G_v, \mathcal{H}_v)$ is in $\mathcal D$, then $(G,\mathcal{H})$ is in $\mathcal D$. $\bullet$ For any vertex $v$ and for any $g\in G_v$, the element $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $Q\in\mathcal{H}_v$ if and only if $g$ is conjugate to an element in some $H\in\mathcal{H}$. That edge groups are not assumed to be finitely generated and that they do not necessarily belong to a peripheral collection of subgroups of an adjacent vertex are the main differences between this work and previous results in the literature. The method of proof provides lower and upper bounds of the relative Dehn functions in terms of the relative Dehn functions of the vertex groups. These bounds generalize and improve analogous results in the literature.

Partial Difference Sets with Denniston Parameters in Elementary Abelian $p$-Groups

Abstract:Denniston \cite{D1969} constructed partial difference sets (PDS) with parameters $(2^{3m}, (2^{m+r}-2^m+2^r)(2^m-1), 2^m-2^r+(2^{m+r}-2^m+2^r)(2^r-2), (2^{m+r}-2^m+2^r)(2^r-1))$ in elementary abelian groups of order $2^{3m}$ for all $m\geq 2$ and $1 \leq r < m$. These PDS correspond to maximal arcs in the Desarguesian projective planes PG$(2, 2^m)$. Davis et al. \cite{DHJP2024} and also De Winter \cite{dewinter23} presented constructions of PDS with Denniston parameters $(p^{3m}, (p^{m+r}-p^m+p^r)(p^m-1), p^m-p^r+(p^{m+r}-p^m+p^r)(p^r-2), (p^{m+r}-p^m+p^r)(p^r-1))$ in elementary abelian groups of order $p^{3m}$ for all $m \geq 2$ and $r \in \{1, m-1\}$, where $p$ is an odd prime. The constructions in \cite{DHJP2024, dewinter23} are particularly intriguing, as it was shown by Ball, Blokhuis, and Mazzocca \cite{BBM1997} that no nontrivial maximal arcs in PG$(2, q^m)$ exist for any odd prime power $q$. In this paper, we show that PDS with Denniston parameters $(q^{3m}, (q^{m+r}-q^m+q^r)(q^m-1), q^m-q^r+(q^{m+r}-q^m+q^r)(q^r-2), (q^{m+r}-q^m+q^r)(q^r-1))$ exist in elementary abelian groups of order $q^{3m}$ for all $m \geq 2$ and $1 \leq r < m$, where $q$ is an arbitrary prime power.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a smooth, projective and geometrically integral curve defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}$. Let $A$ be the ring of function of $\mathcal{C}$ that are regular outside a closed point $P$ and let $k=\mathrm{Quot}(A)$. Let $\mathcal{G}=\mathrm{SU}(3)$ be the non-split group-scheme defined from an (isotropic) hermitian form in three variables. In this work, we describe, in terms of the Euler-Poincaré characteristic, the relative homology groups of certain arithmetic subgroups $G$ of $\mathcal{G}(A)$ modulo a representative system $\mathfrak{U}$ of the conjugacy classes of their maximal unipotent subgroups. In other words, we measure how far are the homology groups of $G$ from being the coproducts of the corresponding homology groups of the subgroups $U \in \mathfrak{U}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new description of the relative topological structure group of PL manifolds with boundary, and put the relative L -group into an exact sequence of groups. Then we define the relative index of PL manifolds with boundary, and show that this relative index will induce an additive map from the relative L -group to the K -theory of the relative Roe algebra.

Abstract:In a previous paper, we constructed a category of (phi, Gamma)-modules associated to any adic space over Q_p with the property that the etale (phi, Gamma)-modules correspond to etale Q_p-local systems; these involve sheaves of period rings for Scholzeu0027s pro-etale topology. In this paper, we first extend Kiehlu0027s theory of coherent sheaves on rigid analytic spaces to a theory of pseudocoherent sheaves on adic spaces, then construct a corresponding theory of pseudocoherent (phi, Gamma)-modules. We then relate these objects to a more explicit construction in case the space comes equipped with a suitable infinite etale cover; in this case, one can decomplete the period sheaves and establish an analogue of the theorem of Cherbonnier-Colmez on the overconvergence of p-adic Galois representations. As an application, we show that relative (phi, Gamma)-modules in our sense coincide with the relative (phi, Gamma)-modules constructed by Andreatta and Brinon in the geometric setting where the latter can be constructed. As another application, we establish that the category of pseudocoherent (phi, Gamma)-modules on an arbitrary rigid analytic space over a p-adic field is abelian, satisfies the ascending chain condition, and is stable under various natural derived functors (including Hom, tensor product, and pullback). Applications to the etale cohomology of pro-etale local systems will be given in a subsequent paper.
