Abstract:A group of analytical wave functions is confirmed to be the ground state of a Hubbard model on a double-layer square lattice in the case of half-filling and in the case with one or two doped holes for a range of parameters. The method is based on the variational principle, and no approximations are applied. In the case of half-filling, the ground state is a product of local pairs. In the case of one or two holes, the doped holes are freely moving in the above background. In both cases there exists a long-range order of the evenness and oddness with respect to the layer parity.

Abstract:The Hubbard model for electrons with orbital degeneracy is shown to have an underlying SU_d(4) symmetry of spin-orbital double. A hidden charge SU_c(4) symmetry is exposed and an extended Lieb-Mattis transformation which maps these two symmetries into each other is given. On the basis of elementary degenerate perturbative theory, it is shown that the system with strong repulsive coupling is equivalent to a SO(6) Heisenberg magnet at half-filling and a SU(4) one at quarter-filling. The band is half-filled at all temperature for $\mu=3U/2$. The features of ground state and low-lying excitations in one dimension are indicated according to exact solutions. Various possibilities of symmetry breaking are also given.

Abstract:A full three-band model for the CuO2 plane of cuprates, which includes all the essential interaction - Cu-O and O-O hopping and the Coulomb repulsion on the Cu and O sites and between them, is considered. Its antiferromagnetic ground state for the half-filling is studied by using the mean field approximation. The electronic structure and the magnetic properties such as the densities of states, the energy spectra, the composition of holes (Cu or O character), the superexchange interaction and the magnetic moment are calculated and in general, our results are in agreement with the available experimental and other calculation results. Meanwhile, we find that the influence of the O-O hopping and Cu-O intrasite Coulomb repulsion on these properties is considerable. Our estimate of the energy of the spin singlet state above the antiferromagnetic background indicates that the lowest excitation state of the holes is the singlet state and give a charge-transfer energy in agreement with the experiment. We also discuss the hole-doping to the antiferromagnetic background and find the mean field approach invalid. Finally, based on the electronic structure at the half-filling, en effective one-band Hubbard model is presented and the effective parameters are close to the values given by the computation on the clusters.

Abstract:An exact result is obtained for the ground state of a 2D modulation-frustration Heisenberg model in a special region of parameter space. In this model the frustrated second and third nearest-neighbour couplings are introduced and the first nearest-neighbour coupling is periodically modulated in one direction. The exact ground state is proved to be the quantum spin liquid. The possible relationship between the model and the oxide superconductors is discussed.

Abstract:We carry out a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo calculation of a bilayer model with a repulsive intra-layer Hubbard interaction and a ferromagnetic inter-layer interaction. The latter breaks the global $SU(2)$ spin rotational symmetry but preserves a $U(2)\times U(2)$ invariance under mixing of same-spin electrons between layers. We show that despite the difference in symmetry, the bilayer model exhibits the same qualitative features found in the single-layer Hubbard model. These include stripe phases, whose nature is sensitive to the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping, a maximum in the Knight shift that moves to lower temperatures with increasing hole doping, and lack of evidence for intra-layer d-wave superconductivity. Instead, we find a superconducting phase, coexisting with stripes, whose critical temperature traces a dome as a function of doping and is due to inter-layer spin-polarized pairing that is induced by the ferromagnetic interaction.

Abstract:We study the two-site Hubbard-Holstein model by using an extended phonon coherent state. For the nontrivial singlet bipolarons, the double occupancy probability, the fidelity and the entanglement entropy are calculated to characterize the ground-state properties in both two-site and single-site bipolaron-dominated regimes. We use the localized minimum of the fidelity to define a crossover and plot the bipolaron phase diagram, which separates the large and small entanglement region. Furthermore, the relation between the bipolaron entanglement and the correlation functions demonstrates that the large entanglement corresponds to the large magnitude of lattice deformations induced by electrons.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Bose system with repulsive delta-function interaction in the presence of an SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom on the basis of the coordinate Bethe-ansatz. The ground state and the low-lying excitations are determined by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state, and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons, and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the "ferromagnetic" background anti-parallelly.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the ground-state properties of a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice, as described by the asymmetric Hubbard model. The quantum phase transition from density wave to phase separation is investigated by studying both the corresponding charge order parameter and quantum entanglement. A rigorous proof that even for the single-hole doping case, the density wave is unstable to the phase separation in the infinite U limit, is given. Therefore, our results are quite instructive for both ongoing experiments on strongly correlated cold-atomic systems and traditional heavy fermion systems.

Abstract:We determine the ground-state phase diagram of the three-band Hubbard model across a range of model parameters using density matrix embedding theory. We study the atomic-scale nature of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) orders, explicitly including the oxygen degrees of freedom. All parametrizations of the model display AFM and SC phases, but the decay of AFM order with doping is too slow compared to the experimental phase diagram, and further, coexistence of AFM and SC orders occurs in all parameter sets. The local magnetic moment localizes entirely at the copper sites. The magnetic phase diagram is particularly sensitive to Delta(pd) and t(pp), and existing estimates of the charge transfer gap Delta(pd) appear too large in so-called minimal model parametrizations. The electron-doped side of the phase diagram is qualitatively distinct from the hole-doped side and we find an unusual two-peak structure in the SC in the full model parametrization. Examining the SC order at the atomic scale, within the larger scale d(x2-y2)-wave SC pairing order between Cu-Cu and O-O, we also observe a local p(x(y)) [or d(xz(yz))] symmetry modulation of the pair density on the Cu-O bonds. Our work highlights some of the features that arise in a three-band versus one-band picture, the role of the oxygen degrees of freedom in new kinds of atomic-scale SC orders, and the necessity of re-evaluating current parametrizations of the three-band Hubbard model.
Ground-State Properties of the $t$-$J$ Model for the CuO Double-Chain Structure

Abstract:We investigate the ground-state properties of a correlated model for the double-chain structure in cuprates. We consider the $t$-$J$ model, in which the nearest-neighbor spin interaction $J_1$ is smaller than the next-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_2$ corresponding to the CuO double-chain structure. We vary $J_1$ from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic values and calculate the correlation functions including the superconducting pair correlation function. Employing the density-matrix renormalization group method, we show that the ground state for antiferromagnetic $J_1$ exhibits the hallmarks of the Luther-Emery liquid phase, in which the spin-singlet pair and charge-density-wave correlations exhibit power-law decays against distance, and the spin correlation function decays exponentially. Its signatures are gradually dismissed as $J_1$ approaches the ferromagnetic regime. Our findings suggest that the antiferromagnetic double-chain structure without ferromagnetic bonds is favorable for superconductivity.

Abstract:A theoretical scheme for describing the quasiparticle-pair superconductivity in doped CuO2 system is suggested based on the model put forward by Emery and Reiter. The doped O holes and associated two neighboring Cu-spins form spin-1/2 quasiparticles. Through the magnetic interaction with the spin background, the quasiparticles interact with each other and lead to pair condensation which is responsible for the superconductivity.

Abstract:For over half a century, the Hubbard model has played a paradigmatic role in attempts to understand quantum phenomena exhibited by correlated electrons in solids. Despite a substantial effort and the apparent simplicity of the model, its behavior in many important regimes has remained unknown. Here we study superfluidity in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with controlled error bars up to the coupling strength U = 4 and filling factor . We show, by means of unbiased diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, that in this regime the superfluid transition is governed by Fermi liquid physics with an emergent weak BCS-type coupling driving the instability. The corresponding ground-state phase diagram in the plane describes the competition between the superfluid states of p- and d-wave symmetry. We also report dimensionless coupling constants in this effective BCS regime.

Abstract:Using an extension of the Gutzwiller approximation, we calculated the density of states, magnetic moment, and the antiferromagnetic ground-state energy of high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ copper oxides. The Hubbard Hamiltonian used for the calculations includes hopping between oxygen atoms as well as Cu-O hopping. It is shown that hopping between oxygen atoms is particularly significant for the magnetic properties. The effect of doping, on-site hole repulsion, and charge-transfer energy on the local density of states, magnetic moment of Cu, and antiferromagnetic ground-state energy is studied in detail.

Abstract:We examine theoretically the possibility of phase separation due to hole aggregation in the background of antiferromagnetically ordered CuO2 planes. The results which are calculated within a self-consistent mean-held-type approximation give obvious evidence of phase separation. Abstract:We compute the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard and frustrated Hubbard models on the square lattice with density matrix embedding theory using clusters of up to 16 sites. We provide an error model to estimate the reliability of the computations and complexity of the physics at different points in the diagram. We find superconductivity in the ground state as well as competition between inhomogeneous charge, spin, and pairing states at low doping. The estimated errors in the study are below Tc in the cuprates and on the scale of contributions in real materials that are neglected in the Hubbard model.

Abstract:We investigated the Cu/Ni-O$_2$ bilayer multi-orbital Hubbard model with Cu/Ni impurity approximation embedded in the O lattice by incorporating the 3d$^{8}$ multiplet structure coupled to a full O-2p band. For this simplified model of describing the local electronic structure of hole doped homo-bilayer Cu(Ni)O$_2$-Cu(Ni)O$_2$ and hetero-bilayer CuO$_2$-NiO$_2$, we demonstrate that the homo-bilayer system hosts rich phase diagram with inversion symmetry breaking between two layers at strong enough interlayer hybridization, especially the coexistence of two-hole singlet and triplet states in opposite layers. Besides, we show that the interlayer hybridization in hetero-bilayer systems destabilizes the Zhang-Rice singlets or 3d$^{8}$ triplets within each layer via charge transfer between layers. The relevance of these electronic redistribution to the bilayer or interface systems of cuprates and/or nickelates are discussed.

Abstract:We consider a modification of the one-dimensional Hubbard model by including an external pairing potential. Guided by analytic bosonization results, we quantitatively determine the grand-canonical zero-temperature phase diagram using both finite and infinite density matrix renormalization group algorithm based on the formalism of matrix product states and matrix product operator, respectively. By computing various local quantities as well as the half-system entanglement, we are able to distinguish between Mott, metallic and superconducting phases. We point out the compressible nature of the Mott phase and the fully gapped nature of the many-body spectrum of the superconducting phase, in the presence of explicit U(1)-charge symmetry breaking.

Hubbard Model on Triangular Lattice: Role of Charge Fluctuations

Abstract:A chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase has been recently reported in the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at half-filling. It emerges in an intermediate coupling regime, which is sandwiched between a $120^\circ$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and a metallic phase as a function of on-site repulsion $U$. In this work, we examine how the charge fluctuation may cause the CSL and complex phase diagram. We first identify an exact sign structure of the model at arbitrary temperature, sample size, and doping, which is reduced from the original Fermi exchange signs of the electrons by finite $U$. In particular, the spin and charge degrees of freedom are generally entangled via the phase-string in the sign structure. By precisely switching off such a phase-string, the CSL phase is shown to disappear, with only the $120^\circ$ AFM order remaining down to weak $U$ by a density matrix renormalization group calculation. Here the charge fluctuation is effectively decoupled from the AFM background, which is a $120^\circ$ AFM order due to a geometric Berry phase in the sign structure of the triangular lattice. General implications for the Mott physics will also be discussed.

Abstract:Based on a generalized one-band Hubbard model, we study magnetic properties of Mott insulating states for ultracold spin-3/2 fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the \textit{s}-wave scattering lengths for the total spin $S=2,0$ satisfy conditions $a_{2}>a_{0}>0$, we apply a functional integral approach to the half filled case, where the spin-quadrupole fluctuations dominate. On a 2D square lattice, the saddle point solution yields a staggered spin-quadrupole ordering at zero temperature with symmetry breaking from SO(5) to SO(4). Both spin and spin-quadrupole static structure factors are calculated, displaying highly anisotropic spin antiferromagnetic fluctuations and antiferroquadrupole long-range correlations, respectively. When Gaussian fluctuations around the saddle point are taken into account, spin-quadrupole density waves with a linear dispersion are derived. Compared with the spin density waves in the half filled spin-1/2 Hubbard model, the quadrupole density wave velocity is saturated in the strong-coupling limit, and there are no transverse spin-quadrupole mode couplings, as required by the SO(4) invariance of the effective action. Finally, in the strong-coupling limit of the model Hamiltonian, we derive the effective hyperfine spin-exchange interactions for the Mott insulating phases in the quarter filled and half filled cases, respectively.
