Abstract:The granulation of anammox sludge plays an important role in the high nitrogen removal performance of the anammox reactor. In this study, anaerobic granular sludge was selected as the seeding sludge to start up anammox reactor in order to directly obtain anammox granules. Results showed that the anammox UASB reactor was successfully started up by inoculating anaerobic granular sludge, with substrate capacity of 4435.2 mg/(L·d) and average ammonium and nitrite removal efficiency of 90.36% and 93.29%, respectively. During the start-up course, the granular sludge initially disintegrated and then reaggregated and turned red, suggesting the high anammox performance. Zn-Fe precipitation was observed on the surface of granules during the operation by SEM-EDS, which would impose inhibition to the anammox activity of the granules. Accordingly, it is suggested to relatively reduce the trace metals concentrations, of Fe and Zn in the conventional medium. The findings of this study are expected to be used for a shorter start-up and more stable operation of anammox system.

Abstract:The granulation of Anammox sludge plays an important role in improving the efficiency of high-rate Anammox bioreactors. The present study involved the use of anaerobic granular sludge to start up the Anammox process to accomplish granulation in Anammox reactor. The accumulation of nitrogen gas and subsequent slugging behavior were observed in the upflow Anammox granular sludge bed (AGSB) reactor, resulting in deteriorated effluent quality. Based on shear force analysis of the gas column under the quasi-steady state, the liquid-induced shear force was increased by progressively shortening of hydraulic residence time (HRT) and implementing effluent recycling. It appeared to be the right strategy to eradicate the slugging behavior which disappeared completely when HRT was shortened to 1.10h with liquid upflow velocity of 1.30cmmin−1. The application of high shear stress enhanced the nitrogen removal performance to 15.40kg-Nm−3d−1. Thus the amendments in the liquid-induced shear force by shortening HRT may be an appropriate strategy to overcome slugging behavior of the Anammox reactor.

Abstract:The start-up of anammox process inoculated with anaerobic granular sludge and nitritation sludge were carefully investigated in two upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors. Three major bioprocesses related in anammox start-up i.e. anammox, denitrification and cell lysis, were quantified in both reaction and microbial growth aspects in the four consecutive phases namely cell lysis phase, lag phase, activity elevation phase and stationary phase. The results showed that anammox was negligible when cell lysis was predominant in the reactors; however, the density of anammox bacteria objectively increased in this phase due to the biomass reduction caused by hydrolysis. During lag phase, poor anammox was detected; while denitrification and cell lysis were the two leading reactions. Anammox performance of the reactors was significantly enhanced in activity elevation phase. Denitrification continuously weakened in stationary phase and anammox gradually became the dominant reaction. Nevertheless, heterotrophic denitrification still predominated throughout the start-up course due to the extremely low growth rate of anammox bacteria. Results also suggested that the inoculation strategy using nitritation sludge as the main inoculum commixing with anaerobic granular sludge could contribute to the relatively shorter start-up time and better reactor performance. Such an alternative may prove effective strategy for full-scale application of anammox process.

Abstract:Anammox process is a new biotechnology for nitrogen removal from wastewaters. It was favored in the field of environmental engineering once it came out and now it has become the upgrading technology. Anammox bacteria (AnAOB) are the function source of Anammox process and Anammox granular sludge (AnGS) formed by AnAOB is the vital pillar of Anammox granular sludge bed system. However, due to the slow growth of AnAOB and their sensitivity to the change of environmental conditions, Anammox nitrogen removal system not only starts up slowly, but runs easily to be unstable and even collapses. Fortunately, AnAOB can select, combine and fix the functional bacterial community freely to form AnGS, thus ensuring the continuous work of the Anammox nitrogen removal system for its excellent gravity settling property and high efficient substrate conversion property. In this paper, the taxonomy and characteristic of AnAOB, compopsition, structure, and function of AnGS are reviewed so as to give guidance for the optimization and expansion of Anammox process.

Abstract:The low yield and long doubling time of anammox bacteria cause slow start-up of anammox bioreactor and restrict its engineering application.Therefore,it is important to select the right seeding sludge and start-up strategy for anammox bioreactor.The basic principles,start-up strategy and effect of using conventional activated sludge as seeding sludge for anammox bioreactor are introduced.Based on the analysis of start-up process of the first full-scale anammox reactor in the world,the step-by-step enrichment strategy of lab-,pilot-and full-scale is proposed to accelerate the start-up of full-scale anammox bioreactor.

Abstract:The feasibility of implementing anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) granules to start up high-loading anaerobic sulfide oxidation (ASO) in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor was investigated. An innovation method of the reverse start-up of anammox was also validated. Firstly, the reactor was operated to treat sulfide-rich wastewaters into which nitrite was introduced as an electron acceptor. An high-rate performance with sulfide and nitrate removal rates of 105.5 +/- 0.11 kg S m(-3)d(-1) and 28.45 +/- 3.40 kg N m(-3)d(-1), respectively, was accomplished. Sulfurovum were enriched with the increase of the substrate load and then conquered Candidatus Kuenenia to be the predominant bacteria. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy showed that the intensities of fluorescence decreased and protein-like substrates were the main components associated with the process of start-up. FT-IR analysis found that the main functional groups indicator were O-H groups. Secondly, the reverse start-up of anammox (achieving 90% TN removal) was achieved immediately when the substrate changed. 16S rRNA analysis indicated the successfully enrichment of anammox bacteria (Candidatus Kuenenia). These results suggest that anammox granules can act as inoculum of high-loading ASO process and the reverse start-up provides a new perspective for the fast initiation of anammox process. Abstract:The characteristics of the anaerobic sludges in Anammox-EGSB bioreactors started up with anaerobic methanogenic sludge(AMS), fresh Anammox sludge(FAS) and stored Anammox sludge(SAS) were investigated respectively. It was found that Anammox-EGSB bioreactors could be started up successfully with these three kinds of seeding sludges. The performance of the bioreactor inoculated with SAS was better than that inoculated with AMS, but worse than that inoculated with FAS. After the start-up, the VSS/SS ratio, granular diameter, settling velocity and SAA of these three seeding sludges were superior to those of the initial state. The color of three seeding sludges tended to be bright red. Besides, the cell suspension showed the characteristic absorption peaks between 400 nm and 420 nm. The changes on color and the absorption spectrum of the sludges were correlated with the changes of numbers and the activity of microorganisms during the start-up. The color and absorption spectrum could be used as an indicator in the start-up of Anammox reactors. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:A novel mathematical model was developed to estimate the volumetric nitrogen conversion rates of a high-rate Anammox UASB reactor based on the packing patterns of granular sludge. A series of relationships among granular packing density, sludge concentration, hydraulic retention time and volumetric conversion rate were constructed to correlate Anammox reactor performance with granular packing patterns. It was suggested that the Anammox granules packed as the equivalent simple cubic pattern in high-rate UASB reactor with packing density of 50-55%, which not only accommodated a high concentration of sludge inside the reactor, but also provided large pore volume, thus prolonging the actual substrate conversion time. Results also indicated that it was necessary to improve Anammox reactor performance by enhancing substrate loading when sludge concentration was higher than 37.8 gVSS/L. The established model was carefully calibrated and verified, and it well simulated the performance of granule-based high-rate Anammox UASB reactor.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process is a high-rate nitrogen removal technology that has been applied in sludge dewatering effluents treatment with nitrogen removal rate as high as 9.5 kg/(m x d). However, due to the slow growth rate of the autotrophic Anammox bacteria and the susceptivity to environmental conditions, the start-up of Anammox process is very long; the operation is unstable; and the nitrogen removal from organic-containing and/or toxicant-containing ammonium-rich wastewaters using Anammox process becomes difficult. Thus, the application of this high-rate process is significantly limited. In this paper, a newly-developed Anammox process with sequential biocatalyst (Anammox biomass) addition was established based on the procedure in fermentation engineering. We introduced the Anammox process with sequential biocatalyst addition on start-up, stable operation and the treatment of organic-containing and toxicant-containing ammonium-rich wastewaters. Results show that supplementing high-activity Anammox biomass into reactors will increase the amount of as well as the ratio of Anammox bacteria. Thus, the innovative Anammox process with sequential biocatalyst addition not only accelerates the start-up course, but also enhances the stability of Anammox process. Furthermore, it overcomes the drawbacks of wastewaters containing high organic content and toxic substances. Therefore, the application of Anammox process may be further enlarged.

Abstract:The granulation process during start-up of UASB reactor inoculated with aerobic digested sludge was characterized by three phases: acclimation, granulation and maturation. The volumetric loading rate increased stepwise from 0.56 g COD/L/d to 4.4 g COD/L/d. Dissolved COD removal efficiency reached 80%. The cultivated granules consisted predominantly of filamentous Methanothrix-like species.

Abstract:The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has been developed as one of the optimal alternatives to the conventional biological nitrogen removal process because of its high nitrogen removal capacity and low energy consumption. However, the slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and its high sensitivity to environmental changes have resulted in fewer anammox sludge sources for process start-up and a lengthy start-up period. Given that anammox microorganisms tend to aggregate, granular-anammox sludge is a frequent byproduct of the anammox process. In this study, we review state-of-the-art strategies for promoting the formation of anammox granules and the start-up of the anammox process based on the literature of the past decade. These strategies are categorized as the transformation of alternative sludge, the addition of accelerators, the introduction of functional carriers, and the implementation of other physical methods. In addition, the formation mechanism of anammox granules, the operational performance of various strategies, and their promotion mechanisms are introduced. Finally, prospects are presented to indicate the gaps in contemporary research and the potential future research directions. This review functions as a summary guideline and theoretical reference for the cultivation of granular-anammox sludge, the start-up of the anammox process, and its practical application.
