Abstract:In the presence of nitriles, an eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl ligand in bis(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)titanacyclopentadienes was torn into a C-2 moiety and a C-3 Moiety, which were trapped by the titanacyclopentadiene and nitriles, respectively, to generate a benzene derivative and a pyridine derivative. This paper describes how this novel reaction has been developed. Related literatures on cleavage of cyclopentadienyl ligands are also presented.

Abstract:The C-C sigma-bond activation of unstrained cycloketones represents an ingenious and advanced technique in synthetic chemistry, but it remains a challenging area which has been largely underexplored. Herein we report an efficient strategy for the direct C-C cleavage of cyclohexanones and cyclopentanones. The cyclic C-C sigma-bond is readily cleaved under mild conditions with the aid of an in situ formed side-chain aryl radical. Density functional theory calculations are carried out to shed light on the unusual regioselectivity of C-C bond cleavage. The reaction affords a variety of structurally diverse 3-coumaranones and indanones that widely exist in natural products and bioactive molecules, illustrating the synthetic value of this method.

Endeavoring the First Lanthanide–Carbon Triple-Bond in Fullerene Cage

Abstract:Metal–ligand multiple bonds are intriguing in coordination and organometallic chemistry. However, lanthanide–carbon multiple bonds are extremely difficult to form. Despite decades of effort, isolable complexes containing lanthanide–carbon double bonds with terminal methyl carbene (= CH2) and lanthanide–carbon triple bonds have never been found. Here, we report the successful synthesis of an unprecedented lanthanide–carbon triple-bonded compound with cerium-carbide [Ce≡C − Sc2] cluster encapsulated inside a C80 fullerene cage. The molecular structure of CeCSc2@C80 and the nature of the Ce≡C triple bond are characterized through X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic analyses, and quantum chemical study, revealing a very short Ce≡C distance of 1.978(8) Å. Chemical bonding analysis suggests that the formation of the Ce≡C bond primarily arises from the stronger bonding affinity between carbon and cerium compared to scandium inside the encapsulated cluster. The fullerene cage plays a crucial role in stabilizing and protecting this trimetallic carbide cluster with a Ce≡C triple bond.

Abstract:Reactions of bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanacyclopentenes with BiI 3 gave coupling products of one Cp ligand and the alkenyl carbons in moderate yields. An NMR study of the tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) adduct of the product showed that the coupled Cp ring and the alkenyl carbons were connected by one carbon–carbon double bond. This is in sharp contrast to coupling reactions of one Cp ligand with the diene moiety in bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanacyclopentadienes, where two carbon–carbon single bonds were formed between those two components to give dihydroindenes or spiro compounds. Abstract:Diels-Alder reactions of cyclopentadiene to C-2,(19 138)-C-76 and YNC@C-2 ,(19 138)-C-76 violating the isolated pentagon rule have been systematically studied by means of density functional theory calculations. As for the free fullerene, the pentalene-type [5,5]-bond in the adjacent pentagon pair is the most favorable from thermodynamic and kinetic viewpoints, which is attributed to the highly strained carbon atoms accompanied by the suitable lowest unoccupied molecular orbital shape with a large distribution to interact with cyclopentadiene. Upon encapsulating the YNC cluster, a corannulene-type [5,6]-bond and a pyracylene-type [6,6]-bond become the two most reactive addition sites under thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, which possess similar reaction energies and energy barriers. Especially, the [5,6]-bond exhibits a larger reaction energy and a lower energy barrier than that on the free fullerene, which should be ascribed to its shorter bond length and larger pi-orbital axis vector value after trapping the metallic cluster. The suitable unoccupied molecular orbital lobes with large distributions on the [5,6]- and [6,6]-bonds are also an advantage of cycloadditions. This work presents the first example that the most favorable addition site is remote from the adjacent pentagon pair in the fullerene cage after encapsulating a metallic cluster.

Abstract:Pentacene's extraordinary photophysical and electronic properties are highly dependent on intermolecular through-space interactions. Macrocyclic arrangements of chromophores have been shown to provide a high level of control over these interactions, but few examples exist for pentacene due to inherent synthetic challenges. In this work, zirconocene-mediated alkyne coupling was used as a dynamic covalent C–C bond forming reaction to synthesize two geometrically distinct, pentacene-containing macrocycles on a gram scale and in four or fewer steps. Both macrocycles undergo singlet fission in solution with rates that differ by an order of magnitude, while the rate of triplet recombination is approximately the same. This independent modulation of singlet and triplet decay rates is highly desirable for the design of efficient singlet fission materials. Abstract:Among gas-phase dissociation reactions, double bond cleavage reaction appears to happen extremely rare, especially in the case of CC double bond. In the dissociation reaction of protonated 2-benzylidenecyclopentanones in tandem mass spectrometry, the formation of benzyl cations was observed, resulting from the cleavage of Cα=Cβ double bonds, which is different from the general cleavage route seen in most α, β-unsaturated ketone cases. A combined experimental and theoretical investigation on intramolecular hydrogen transfers was carried out to illustrate the mechanisms. The external proton is initially localized on the carbonyl oxygen (the thermodynamically-preferred protonation site). Upon collisional activation, the mobile proton stepwise migrates to the Cα position to achieve the reduction and subsequent cleavage of the Cα=Cβ double bond. The stepwise proton transfer is achieved via intramolecular proton-transport catalysis with the assistance of the phenyl ring. The ortho position of the phenyl accepts the proton from the carbonyl oxygen via a 1,6-H shift, and then donates it to the Cα stepwise. The conventional 1,3-H shift from the carbonyl oxygen to the Cα position can be excluded in this case due to its significant energy barrier. Further isotope-labeling experiments are applied to confirming the reaction mechanism. Last but not least, the scope-expansion experiments indicates that the aromatic and cycloalkanonyl moieties play a crucial roles in the cleavage reaction of Cα=Cβ double bond.

Abstract:An unprecedented, caged 2H-benzo-dioxo-pentacycloundecane (BDPC) framework was serendipitously obtained in a single transformation via a triple-dearomative photocycloaddition of chromone esters with furans. This caged structure was generated during the course of an effort to access a tricyclic, oxygen-bridged intermediate enroute to the dihydroxanthone natural product nidulalin A. Reaction scope and limitations were thoroughly investigated, revealing the ability to access a multitude of synthetically challenging caged scaffolds in a two-step sequence. Photophysical studies provided key mechanistic insights on the process for formation of the novel caged scaffold.

Abstract:A 14‐electron ternary anionic CBe2H5– cluster containing a planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) atom is designed herein. Remarkably, it can be stabilized by only two beryllium atoms with both π‐acceptor/σ‐donor properties and two hydrogen atoms, which means that the conversion from planar methane (transition state) to ptC species (global minimum) requires the substitution of only two hydrogen atoms. Moreover, two ligand H atoms exhibit alternate rotation, giving rise to interesting dynamic fluxionality in this cluster. The electronic structure analysis reveals the flexible bonding positions of ligand H atoms due to C‐H localized bonds, highlighting the rotational fluxionality in the cluster, and two CBe2 3c‐2e delocalized bonds endow its rare 2σ/2π double aromaticity. Unprecedentedly, the fluxional process exhibits a conversion in the type of bonding (σ bond ⇔ π bond), which is an uncommon fluxional mechanism. The cluster can be seen as an attempt to apply planar hypercoordinate carbon species to molecular motors.

Abstract:Direct observations of cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules (C10, C14, C16 and C18) experimentally prepared by atom manipulation technique raised immense attraction in the general chemistry society. The cyclic π-conjugated systems, namely in-plane and out-plane, construct dual aromaticity for odd n while dual anti-aromaticity for even n. In this work, we performed electronic structure investigation into cyclo-[2n]-carbon with n = 3 ~ 9 by comparing results obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By using Huckel molecular orbital (HMO) theory and the particle in a ring model, the electronic feature of such innovative carbon allotrope was clearly and chemically presented. Comparison showed that DFT results are considered to be incorrect for C6, which has a unique bonding structure among all cyclo-[2n]-carbon. The bond length alternating (BLA) phenomenon results from difference in electron correlation intensity and spatial distribution observed in pairs of bonding and anti-bonding orbitals. Therefore, results suggested that the dual anti-aromaticity in cyclo-[2n]-carbon with even n should be attributed to electron correlation effect, instead of decreased geometric symmetry, which actually exists in all cyclo-[2n]-carbon molecules and does not point out the essence.

Abstract:Pentacosacyclene ( PC ) and pentacosacyclene tetraimide ( PCTI ) were obtained in concise syntheses involving radial extension of tridecacyclene. PC is an electron-rich hydrocarbon with a C 88 π-conjugated framework, whereas PCTI is electron-deficient and contains a C 96 N 4 core. PC and PCTI both have non-planar saddle-shaped conformations, and PC was found to self-assemble with C 60 to produce a uniquely structured supramolecular crystalline phase. In solution, PCTI undergoes eight single-electron reductions, while PC exhibits two reversible oxidations and three reversible reduction events. Chemically generated anions of PC and PCTI showcase extended near-infrared to infrared absorptions, with the lowest energy bands observed for at > 3200 nm for the PCTI monoanion and ca. 2800 nm for the PCTI dianion. The electronic and redox properties of pentacosacyclenes can be explained using molecular orbital and valence bond theories, as originating from changes in local aromaticity of five- and eight-membered rings.

Abstract:The selective cleavage of C-C bonds is of fundamental interest because it provides an alternative approach to traditional chemical synthesis, which is focused primarily on building up molecular complexity. However, current C-C cleavage methods provide only limited opportunities. For example, selective C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage generally relies on the use of transition-metal to open strained ring systems or iminyl and alkoxy radicals to induce β-fragmentation. Here we show that by merging photoredox catalysis with copper catalysis, we are able to employ α-trisubstituted carboxylic acids as substrates and achieve consecutive C-C bond cleavage, resulting in the scission of the inert β-CH2 group. The key transformation relies on the decarboxylative oxidation process, which could selectively generate in-situ formed alkoxy radicals and trigger consecutive C-C bond cleavage. This complicated yet interesting reaction might help the development of other methods for inert C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage.
