Abstract:A series of Ni-K/Clay catalysts were prepared to investigate the effect of potassium on the performance of maleic anhydride hydrogenation catalysts in the low-polarity 1,4-dioxane system. The Ni3K1/Clay catalyst loaded with 3% nickel and 1% potassium was able to stabilize the reaction at optimal reaction conditions: reaction temperature = 180 degree celsius, reaction pressure = 1 MPa, WHSV = 2 h(-1), and H-2/MA = 50. The conversion of maleic anhydride was higher than 95% and the selectivity of succinic anhydride reached 100%. The catalysts were characterized by N(2 )adsorption-desorption characterization, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed desorption, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to verify the changes in catalyst morphology, active species, reduction performance, and hydrogenation activity after adding potassium as a promoter. Potassium is present in the form of potassium oxide. There is a suitable range for the influence of the loading of potassium oxide on the catalyst. The presence of potassium increases the specific surface area and pore volume of the catalyst, increases the reducible active sites without adding new active sites, and adjusts the selectivity of the catalyst by inducing charge migration of nickel while excessive potassium will cause the catalyst surface covered, interlayer blocked, and other problems.
