Abstract:A review of studies focused on enhancing the thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCM) for thermal energy storage upon introduction of nanostructures is presented. These emerging materials have only been studied since 2005 and represent a clear departure from previous/existing practices of utilizing fixed, stationary high-conductivity inserts/structures into PCM. Carbon-based nanostructures (nanofibers, nanoplatelets and graphene flakes), carbon nanotubes, both metallic (Ag, Al, C/Cu and Cu) and metal oxide (Al2O3, CuO, MgO and TiO2) nanoparticles and silver nanowires have been explored as the materials of the thermal conductivity promoters. Emphasis of the work so far has been placed on the dependence of the enhanced thermal conductivity on mass fraction of the nanostructures and temperature for both liquid and solid phases, however issues related to modifications of the degree of supercooling, melting temperature, viscosity, heat of fusion, etc. are also reported. In general, carbon-based nanostructures and carbon nanotubes exhibit far greater enhancement of thermal conductivity in comparison to metallic/metal oxide nanoparticles due to the high aspect-ratio of these nanofillers. Utilizing a figure of merit for the observed thermal conductivity enhancement, the majority of 340+ measured data points in both liquid and solid phases are summarized.
Thermophysical Properties of a Novel Nanoencapsulated Phase Change Material

Abstract:Thermophysical properties are important parameters that influence the performance of phase change materials (PCMs) and heat transfer fluids. Micro/nanoencapsulation is an effective technique for preventing leakage and enhancing thermophysical properties of PCMs. In the present study, novel d -mannitol nanocapsules with inorganic shells were synthesized as a medium-temperature PCM. The nanocapsulation was confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy. The specific heat and thermal diffusivity of the nanocapsules and their suspension with heat transfer oil as base fluid were measured by a differential scanning calorimeter and light flash apparatus. The thermal conductivity of the nanocapsule suspension was measured using a hot-disk thermal constants analyzer. The viscosity of the nanocapsule suspension was measured by a rotational rheometer. The results show that the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the nanocapsules were enhanced compared to the bulk of the PCM due to the inorganic shell. The specific heat, thermal conductivity, and viscosity of the nanocapsule suspension were increased compared to the base fluid. The potential of the nanocapsule suspension as a heat storage and transfer fluid was evaluated.

Abstract:We designed a two-step Pickering emulsification procedure to create nano-encapsulated phase changing materials (NEPCMs) using a method whose simplicity and low energy consumption suggest promise for scale-up and mass production. Surface-modified amphiphilic zirconium phosphate (ZrP) platelets were fabricated as the Pickering emulsifiers, nonadecane was chosen as the core phase change material (PCM), and polystyrene, the shell material. The resultant capsules were submicron in size with remarkable uniformity in size distribution, which has rarely been reported. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) characterization showed that the capsulation efficiency of NEPCMs, and they were found to be thermal stable, as characterized by the DSC data for the sample after 200 thermal cycles. NEPCMs exhibit superior mechanical stability and mobility when compared with the well-developed micro-encapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs). NEPCMs find useful applications in thermal management, including micro-channel coolants; solar energy storage media; building temperature regulators; and thermal transfer fabrics.

Abstract:Microencapsulated phase change material(MPCM) were prepared by using solid paraffin as core and melamine-urea-formaldehyde condensation resin as shell through in-situ polymerization.Problems such as low thermal conductivity and hydrophilicity were studied.The thermal conductivity of core and surface performance were modified by using graphite and nano-SiO2.The surface morphology,structure,thermal properties were measured and characterized by optical microscopy(OM),infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The results showed that:thermal storage can maintain original characteristics of phase change enthalpy 47.5J / g after paraffin microencapsulated.The mean diameter of microcapsule was 45μm with rough surface.Encapsulation efficiency of paraffin was up to 80%.After nano-SiO2 modification,hydrophilicity,thermal properties and mechanical strength have been enhanced and thermal conductivity have been increased after graphite modified.

Abstract:In the face of rising global energy demand, phase change materials (PCMs) have become a research hotspot in recent years due to their good thermal energy storage capacity. Single PCMs suffer from defects such as easy leakage when melting, poor thermal conductivity and cycling stability, which are not conducive to heat storage. Therefore, composite PCMs are gaining more and more attention for future applications. Due to the unique physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, it was found that composites of nanomaterials and PCMs can reduce supercooling, suppress phase separation, and improve thermal conductivity and cycle stability. The nano-enhanced PCMs have great applications in the field of phase change energy storage. Although many studies have been reported on nano-enhanced PCMs, there has been no systematic summary of nano-enhanced PCMs so far. This article focuses on improving the thermal performance of PCMs by the types and properties of nano-additives. In this review, the latest research progress on PCMs enhanced by nanomaterials was summarized, ranging from the variety of nanomaterials, the synthesis of nanocomposite PCMs, the effect of nanomaterials on the thermal conductivity of PCMs, and the application of nanocomposite PCMs. This work provides reference value for the future application of nano-enhanced PCMs and is beneficial to expand the applications of nanomaterials in the field of phase change energy storage materials.

Abstract:Owing to incessant proliferation of challenges pertaining to energy storage systems to attain optimum design and efficient performance, massive research is underway on the development of optimal storage medium (used to overcome the low thermal storage capacity of most of the thermal transport fluids). Phase change materials (PCMs) are of the high energy storage capacity and extensively used in various applications for thermal energy storage purposes. However, the poor thermal conductivity of PCMs limits their potential in different applications. Substantial research is being conducted on the dispersion of thermally conductive nanoparticles to tackle the low thermal conductivity of PCMs. This article reviews the recent numerical and experimental studies on the nano-enhanced PCMs (nano-PCMs) to analyse the effects of nanofillers on the thermophysical properties (latent heat and thermal conductivity) of the nano-PCMs. Comprehensive details of stability enhancement techniques such as dispersant addition, sonication, and surface treatment as well as concomitant challenges along with stability measurement techniques have also been presented in this paper. Furthermore, various applications, preparation, and characterization methods of nano-PCMs are also discussed. Lastly, this review article suggests the potential research directions of nano-enhanced PCMs for the storage of thermal energy.

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) proved to be valuable and drew the attention of numerous scientists striving to establish novel techniques to minimize energy consumption and expand heat storage; yet a number of challenges hampered their research. This paper provides an overall overview on how to overcome those constraints by adapting nano-enhanced phase change materials, the motivation behind their investigation, their advantages, area of applications, and their impact on thermal management and storage equipment. Recent computational and experimental studies have revealed that nanoparticles are extremely useful in terms of improving the thermo-physical properties of PCMs, allowing nano-PCMs, mainly nano-paraffin, to have a major positive influence on thermal concepts at the economical, ecological, and effectiveness levels. In this context, nano-enhanced PCMs are now able to store and release large amounts of heat in short intervals of time, which is relevant to thermal storage systems and contributes to augmenting and boosting their efficiency. It also improves the thermal performance of cooling and heating systems in buildings and regulates the operating temperature of PV systems, electronic components, and batteries.

Abstract:Energy considerations in the twenty-first century have brought significant attention to developing high-performance materials. Nanostructured materials have emerged as a promising approach for achieving enhanced performance, particularly in the thermal energy storage (TES) field. Phase change materials (PCMs) have gained considerable prominence in TES due to their high thermal storage capacity and nearly constant phase transition temperature. Their potential to expand the application of renewable energy sources, such as solar energy harvesting, has attracted significant interest from researchers. To further enhance the thermophysical properties of PCMs, the incorporation of nanoparticles has resulted in the development of nano-enhanced phase change materials (NEPCMs). This comprehensive review paper discusses the latest advancements in NEPCMs since 2020, focusing on their impact on the thermal characteristics of base PCMs, practical applications, and the challenges encountered in this emerging field. Detailed discussions and comparisons were conducted to identify nanoparticles influencing key thermophysical properties, including phase change temperature, supercooling degree, latent heat capacity, thermal conductivity, melting rate, thermal stability, and reliability. An extensive literature survey was conducted to explore the utilization of these NEPCMs in solar energy harvesting, thermal management of electronics, construction, and waste heat recovery. Furthermore, an economic analysis assessed the feasibility of employing nanoparticles in producing NEPCMs. The findings reveal a significant emphasis among researchers on improving the thermophysical properties of NEPCMs. However, more comprehensive research is needed to address these materials' economic, environmental, and ecological aspects, ensuring their cost-effectiveness and safety in future applications. Therefore, a holistic approach encompassing economic, environmental, and ecological analyses is essential for adopting NEPCMs widely in various domains.

Abstract:Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have being used in different solar energy systems for thermal energy storage and performance enhancement. Improving heat transfer from PCMs leads to reductions in charge and discharge durations, which makes them more favorable as storage units. Dispersion of conductive solid materials with nano dimensions is a practical approach to enhance their thermal features. Several nano-sized materials have been added to PCMs to improve their heat/cool storage abilities. The studies in this field reveal that employing nanotechnology is an efficient method for heat transfer improvement. In the current article, studies concerning applications of nanotechnology in PCMs are reviewed. According to the results, employing nanotechnology can noticeably enhance the heat transfer rate, which results in a reduction of charge and discharge times of the storage units equipped with the PCMs. The enhancement in the melting process of nano PCMs, which indicates the storage performance, depends on several factors such as concentration and kind of solid nano-sized particles, type of base PCM and the parameters related to operating conditions such as Rayleigh and Darcy numbers. The improvement in thermal performance due to nano PCMs is mainly attributable to the increased thermal conductivity and decrease in latent heat of fusion, which accelerates the melting/solidification processes.

Abstract:The energy storage now a days is a cumbersome process to exploit its best use. This review paper discusses the challenges of efficiently utilizing energy storage and proposes phase-change materials (PCMs) with Nano-particle reinforcement as a solution, particularly for storing solar thermal energy. Various synthesis methods for PCM, including impregnation and encapsulation, are examined, with emphasis on factors like particle size, shape, and solid content. Carbon-based materials, including carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide, emerge as superior options due to their reliability, cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and high heat transfer efficiency, with minimal environmental impact. This review highlights the enhanced thermal conductivity of Nano-particle-reinforced PCM composites, emphasizing their thermally stable, durable, and conductive properties. Additionally, it discusses thermal performance through techniques like DSC, TGA, and DTG, along with material characterization methods such as FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDX, and XPS analysis. Overall, the research underscores the promising potential of Nano-particle-reinforced PCM composites for efficient energy storage and thermal management applications.

Abstract:An overview of recent literature on the micro- and nano-encapsulation of metallic phase-change materials (PCMs) is presented in this review to facilitate an understanding of the basic knowledge, selection criteria, and classification of commonly used PCMs for thermal energy storage (TES). Metals and alloys with high thermal conductivity can be used as PCMs for rapid heat storage in compact systems owing to their high volumetric TES density. The emerging application of metal PCMs in different fields such as solar thermal energy management, smart wearable devices with thermal comfort control, and cooling of electronic devices call for the need of micro- and nano-TES particles, which can be synthesised in different forms to satisfy specific requirements. As metals are easily oxidised, especially at the micro- and nano-level, encapsulation of metal-based PCM particles is important for sustainable use at high operating temperature in ambient conditions. Recent studies focusing on the encapsulation of metallic PCMs at the micro- and nano-level have been reviewed and classified in terms of the melting point of metal/alloy PCMs used and types of encapsulation materials, such as oxides, polymers, carbon, and metals. The current review is expected to provide an outlook on novel metal and alloy PCMs with function-directed structures and superior TES properties for a broad range of applications.

Abstract:Today, the use of phase change materials (PCMs) with remarkable properties for energy storage and development of engineering systems is an extremely important topic, due to enhanced demand for energy consumption. PCMs could be generally subdivided into solid-liquid, liquid-gas, solid-gas, and solid-solid groups. It should be noted that since there is no single excellent PCM that comprises all the suitable physical, chemical, kinetic, thermal, and economic properties, PCMs could be improved by incorporating some additives, modifying PCM structures, and optimizing the storage systems. Nanoencapsulation of PCMs, as an effective technique, can increase their thermal conductivity, barricades their leak during the melting operation, and their possible interactions with the surrounding matrix. Furthermore, there are several methods for fabricating nanocapsules loaded with PCMs including chemical (i.e., emulsion polymerization, mini-emulsion polymerization, in situ polymerization, and interfacial polymerization), physicochemical (sol-gel entrapment), and physicomechanical techniques (electrohydrodynamic processes). Accordingly, the energy storage and release of nanoencapsulated PCMs has been become an important field in many applications such as electronic devices, food industry, buildings, solar energy storage, heat exchangers, packed bed designs, space systems, textiles, etc. This study has been focused on various PCMs, their nanoencapsulation methods, phase change fibers, as well as their potential applications in energy storing and management goals in various fields.

Abstract:Integrating nanotechnology into phase change materials (PCMs) has emerged as a novel approach to improving PCM thermal properties and performance in various thermal energy storage applications. Nanofluids , nanoparticle suspensions in a base fluid, have been identified as a promising method of increasing the thermal conductivity of PCMs and thus reducing thermal energy charging and discharging duration. This review paper investigates recent advances in incorporating nanotechnology into PCMs, focusing on their applications in the solar energy sector. Thermal conductivity, specific heat, viscosity, density, and convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids are discussed, as are the thermal properties of nano-enhanced PCMs (NEPCMs), including thermal conductivity, latent heat, specific heat, viscosity, supercooling, and phase-change temperature. The paper also gives an in-depth look at the uses of nanofluids and NEPCMs in solar collectors, photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) systems, coolants, and desalination , emphasizing their potential to improve system efficiency. The review also considers the potential environmental and human health concerns connected with using nanofluids and NEPCMs, emphasizing the importance of rigorous evaluation and risk assessment in developing and applying these materials. Overall, the review provides valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of incorporating nanotechnology into PCMs and emphasizes the importance of ongoing research and development in this field to further advance the use of thermal energy storage technologies in various applications, including solar energy systems.

Abstract:Encapsulating phase change materials (PCMs) in protective shells can reversibly absorb and release large amounts of heat within a narrow range of operating temperatures and address leakage during the phase transition process. Thus, encapsulated PCMs have attracted significant attention in thermal management. However, their poor thermal properties, unstable physical properties, and non-tunable chemical properties limit their real-world applications. The microfluidic method offers the precise and tunable control of encapsulation, enabling the fabrication of efficient and stabilized PCMs with the desired properties. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances in microfluidic method-based encapsulated PCMs (ME-PCMs). Microfluidic method–based technologies for the fabrication of ME-PCM capsules and ME-PCM fibers are highlighted, and the applications of ME-PCMs in thermal regulation, thermal response, and wearable electronics are examined. In addition, we provide insights on future directions for large-scale applications, and we believe that this review can inspire researchers to devise novel and effective encapsulation methods for ME-PCMs.

Abstract:Abstract Improving the utilization of thermal energy is crucial in the world nowadays due to the high levels of energy consumption. One way to achieve this is to use phase change materials (PCMs) as thermal energy storage media, which can be used to regulate temperature or provide heating/cooling in various applications. However, PCMs have limitations like low thermal conductivity, leakage, and corrosion. To overcome these challenges, PCMs are encapsulated into microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) capsules/fibers. This encapsulation prevents PCMs from leakage and corrosion issues, and the microcapsules/fibers act as conduits for heat transfer, enabling efficient exchange between the PCM and its surroundings. Microfluidics‐based MEPCMs have attracted intensive attention over the past decade due to the exquisite control over flow conditions and size of microcapsules. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the state‐of‐art progress in microfluidics‐based encapsulation of PCMs. The principle and method of preparing MEPCM capsules/fibers using microfluidic technology are elaborated, followed by the analysis of their thermal and microstructure characteristics. Meanwhile, the applications of MEPCM in the fields of building energy conservation, textiles, military aviation, solar energy utilization, and bioengineering are summarized. Finally, the perspectives on MEPCM capsules/fibers are discussed.

Abstract:Thermal energy storage (TES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is an innovative approach to meet the growth of energy demand. Microencapsulation techniques lead to overcoming some drawbacks of PCMs and enhancing their performances. This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies dealing with PCMs properties and their encapsulation techniques. Thus, it is essential to critically examine the existing techniques and their compatibility with different types of PCMs, coating materials, and the area of application. The main objective of this review is to describe each microencapsulation process and to determine different factors that influence the performance of resulting microcapsules. Microencapsulation efficiency, as well as the limitation of each technique, are investigated, and optimum operating conditions of each process are highlighted. Furthermore, up-to-date studies of multifunctional PCMs microcapsules development with enhanced performances and new application directions are also presented. This review aims to be a useful guide for future researches dealing with low thermal energy storage applications of PCMs microcapsules.

Abstract:<p>Phase change materials (PCMs) can alleviate concerns over energy to some extent by reversibly storing a tremendous amount of renewable and sustainable thermal energy. However, the low thermal conductivity, low electrical conductivity, and weak photoabsorption of pure PCMs hinder their wider applicability and development. To overcome these deficiencies and improve the utilization efficiency of thermal energy, versatile carbon materials have been increasingly considered as supporting materials to construct shape‐stabilized composite PCMs. Despite some carbon‐based composite PCMs reviews regarding thermal conductivity enhancement, a comprehensive review of carbon‐based composite PCMs does not exist. Herein, a systematic overview of recent carbon‐based composite PCMs for thermal storage, transfer, conversion (solar‐to‐thermal, electro‐to‐thermal and magnetic‐to‐thermal), and advanced multifunctional applications, including novel metal organic framework (MOF)‐derived carbon materials are provided. The current challenges and future opportunities are also highlighted. The authors hope this review can provide in‐depth insights and serve as a useful guide for the targeted design of high‐performance carbon‐based composite PCMs.</p>

Abstract:Phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage have been intensively studied because it contributes to energy conservation and emission reduction for sustainable energy use. Recently, the issues of shape stability, thermal conductivity, and mechanical properties have been addressed and effective measures have been proposed to deal with the current dilemmas in various applications of PCMs. In this review, research progress on improved integrated performance and other aspects in microencapsulation of PCMs (MEPCMs) and form-stable PCMs (FSPCMs) is introduced. In addition, diverse applications on PCMs, such as thermal management devices, smart textiles, and intelligent buildings, are also discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of PCMs are summarized.
