Abstract:The closed time path Green's function (CTPGF) formalism is applied to the critical dynamics. The related results for the CTPGF approach are briefly reviewed. Three different forms of CTPGF's are defined, transformations from one to another form and other useful computation rules are given. The path integral presentation of the generating functional for CTPGF's is used to derive the Ward-Takahashi identities under both linear and nonlinear transformations of field variables. The generalized Langevin equations for the order parameters and conserved variables are derived from the vertex functional on the closed time path. The proper form of the equations for the conserved variables, including automatically the mode coupling terms, is determined according to the Ward-Takahashi identities and the linear response theory. All existing dynamic models are reobtained by assuming the corresponding symmetry properties for the system. The effective action for the order parameters is deduced by averaging over the random external field. The Lagrangian formulation of the statistical field theory is obtained if the random field one-loop approximation and the second-order approximation of order-parameter fluctuations on different time branches are both taken. The various possibilities of improving the current theory of critical dynamics within the framework of CTPGF's are discussed. The problem of renormalization for the finite-temperature field theory is considered. The whole theoretical framework is also applicable to systems near the stationary states far from equilibrium, whenever there exists an analog of the potential function (free energy).

Abstract:A systematic procedure is developed to obtain the stationary probability density for the response of a nonlinear system under parametric and external excitations of Gaussian white noises. The procedure is devised by separating the circulatory portion of the probability flow from the noncirculatory flow, thus obtaining two sets of equations that must be satisfied by the probability potential. It is shown that these equations are identical to two of the conditions established previously under the assumption of detailed balance; therefore, one remaining condition for detailed balance is superfluous. Three examples are given for illustration, one of which is capable of exhibiting limit cycle and bifurcation behaviors, while another is selected to show that two different systems under two differents sets of excitations may result in the same probability distribution for their responses.

Abstract:A formal apparatus is developed to unify derivations of the linear response theory and a variety of transient fluctuation relations for continuous diffusion processes from a backward point of view. The basis is a perturbed Kolmogorov backward equation and the path integral representation of its solution. We find that these exact transient relations could be interpreted as a consequence of a generalized Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, which intrinsically arises from the Markovian characteristic of diffusion processes.

Abstract:The probability density of the response state vector of a nonlinear system under the excitation of Gaussian white noises is governed by a parabolic partial differential equation, called the Fokker-Planck equation. Exact solutions to such equations are difficult especially when both parametric (multiplicative) and external (additive) random excitations are present. In this paper, methods of solution for response vectors at the stationary state are discussed under two schemes based on the concept of detailed balance and the concept of generalized stationary potential, respectively. It is shown that the second scheme is more general and includes the first scheme as a special case. Examples are given to illustrate their applications.

Abstract:We present analytical results on the transient current response of noninteracting open electronic systems under time-dependent external voltages in both linear- and nonlinear-response regimes. The derivations are based on an equation of motion formalism for the system reduced single-electron density matrix (Zheng et al 2007 Phys. Rev. B 75 195127). Dissipative interactions between the system and leads are treated by the nonequilibrium Green's function approach. The linear- response dynamics is characterized by the analytical admittance spectrum of the open system, through which the quantum coherent transport properties are mapped to equivalent classical circuits. The nonlinear-response current spectrum not only resolves the intrinsic energetic configuration of the system, but also reflects the unique dynamical features due to the transient characteristics of the applied voltages.
Study of non-equilibrium Green's functions beyond Born approximation in open quantum systems

Abstract:We provide a systematic approach to compute different kinds of non-equilibrium Green's functions for open quantum systems which are essentially two-point correlation functions in time. We reveal that the definition of Green's functions based on the Born approximation does not provide the correct results in the leading order of the system-bath coupling. We next provide a systematic correction term in Green's functions by going beyond the Born approximation and incorporating a finite correlation between the system and the bath. We primarily focus on two paradigmatic models of open quantum systems, namely, the dissipative Caldeira-Leggett model and the dissipative spin-boson model. We show that the inclusion of such a correction correctly reproduces the Kadanoff-Baym type equation for the so-called lesser or greater components of the Green's functions and provides the correct long-time result up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling, satisfying the detailed balance condition in thermal equilibrium. We further extend our study to a system coupled to multiple reservoirs simultaneously that are maintained at different temperatures and obtain expressions for non-equilibrium steady-state energy current, once again correct up to the first non-zero order of the system-bath coupling.

Abstract:A more general trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection problem for the random linear system is considered in this paper. The known structural properties of the reference and the disturbance signals motivate us to use the internal model principle, and the motion decomposition for the linear systems prompts us to utilize the superposition principle. Combining the spectral analysis method with the pole assignment algorithm, the stability and tracking property can be obtained. The simulation result demonstrates that all the closed-loop system is exponentially practically stable in the mean square (EpS-2-M), the tracking error can be regulated to an arbitrarily small constant by turning the parameters.

Abstract:Linear response theory is a fundamental framework studying the macroscopic response of a physical system to an external perturbation. This paper focuses on the rigorous mathematical justification of linear response theory for Langevin dynamics. We give some equivalent characterizations for reversible overdamped/underdamped Langevin dynamics, which is the unperturbed reference system. Then we clarify sufficient conditions for the smoothness and exponential convergence to the invariant measure for the overdamped case. We also clarify those sufficient conditions for the underdamped case, which corresponds to hypoellipticity and hypocoercivity. Based on these, the asymptotic dependence of the response function on the small perturbation is proved in both finite and infinite time horizons. As applications, Green-Kubo relations and linear response theory for a generalized Langevin dynamics are also proved in a rigorous fashion.

Abstract:Nonintegrable systems thermalize, leading to the emergence of fluctuating hydrodynamics. Typically, this hydrodynamics is diffusive. We use the effective field theory (EFT) of diffusion to compute higher-point functions of conserved densities. We uncover a simple scaling behavior of correlators at late times, and, focusing on three and four-point functions, derive the asymptotically exact universal scaling functions that characterize nonlinear response in diffusive systems. This allows for precision tests of thermalization beyond linear response in quantum and classical many-body systems. We confirm our predictions in a classical lattice gas.

Abstract:In this paper, we will introduce how to apply Green's function method to get the pointwise estimates for the solutions of Cauchy problem of nonlinear evolution equations with dissipative structure. First of all, we introduce the pointwise estimates of the time-asymptotic shape of the solutions of the isentropic Navier-Stokes equations and show to exhibit the generalized Huygen's principle. Then, for other nonlinear dissipative evolution equations, we will only introduce the result and give some brief explanations. Our approach is based on the detailed analysis of the Green's function of the linearized system and micro-local analysis, such as frequency decomposition and so on.

Abstract:In this paper, the nonlinear responses to uncertain excitations modeled by convex sets are discussed. First, the nonlinear differential inclusion problem is converted into a class of optimization problems to solve the worst response. Next, it is simplified to a two-point boundary value problem of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Finally, as an example, the Duffing equation is considered to obtain the numerical results for the two-point boundary value problem using the shooting method. The worst response and the worst excitation at a given time are discussed. The results show that the worst excitation corresponding to the worst response is a rectangular wave, and not a sine or a cosine wave for maximum-bound convex excitations. The worst excitation of a linear system is a uniform rectangular wave with natural period, while that of a nonlinear system is not a uniform one. This nonuniformity is related to the nonlinearity, the initial conditions and the excitation bound of the system. Results of further analysis are consistent with the results of a classical nonlinear theory.

Abstract:In this article, we derived the transformations among three sets of elosed time path Green's functions and some calculation rules, from which a general definition of arbitrary multipoint retarded and advanced Green's functions follows naturally. Some algebraic identities among multipoint functions have shown to be the consequences of the property W[J+,J-](J+=J-=J)=0 for the generating functional on the closed time path.

Abstract:In this work, we develop the Green's function method for the solution of the peridynamic non-local diffusion model in which the spatial gradient of the generalized potential in the classical theory is replaced by an integral of a generalized response function in a horizon. We first show that the general solutions of the peridynamic non-local diffusion model can be expressed as functionals of the corresponding Green's functions for point sources, along with volume constraints for non-local diffusion. Then, we obtain the Green's functions by the Fourier transform method for unsteady and steady diffusions in infinite domains. We also demonstrate that the peridynamic non-local solutions converge to the classical differential solutions when the non-local length approaches zero. Finally, the peridynamic analytical solutions are applied to an infinite plate heated by a Gauss source, and the predicted variations of temperature are compared with the classical local solutions. The peridynamic non-local diffusion model predicts a lower rate of variation of the field quantities than that of the classical theory, which is consistent with experimental observations. The developed method is applicable to general diffusion-type problems.

Abstract:The time fractional Fokker-Planck equation approach is an important tool for modeling subdiffusion. When the external field is time modulated, two types of time-dependent time fractional Fokker-Planck equations have been proposed, both reduced to the same time-dependent time fractional Fokker-Planck equation when the external field is time uncorrelated. The first type is strictly deduced as the continuous limit of the continuous time random walk with time modulated Boltzmann jumping weight, while the second type is derived by ideally assuming that the jump probabilities can be evaluated at the start of the waiting time prior to jumping. For the first time we obtain the linear response characteristic for the first type of the time fractional Fokker-Planck equation systems, and for a comparison we revisit the corresponding result for the second type of the time fractional Fokker-Planck equation systems, and the similarity and difference between them is discussed with an application example. The investigation not only helps in understanding the competition between subdiffusion and time-dependent modulation, but also has significance in accessing the spectral properties of spontaneous fluctuation and the linear dynamic susceptibility of external perturbation in subdiffusive processes.
