Abstract:A single tunable filter simplifies complexity, reduces insertion loss, and minimizes size compared to frequency switchable filter banks commonly used for radio frequency (RF) band selection. Magnetostatic wave (MSW) filters stand out for their wide, continuous frequency tuning and high-quality factor. However, MSW filters employing electromagnets for tuning consume excessive power and space, unsuitable for consumer wireless applications. Here, we demonstrate miniature and high selectivity MSW tunable filters with zero static power consumption, occupying less than 2 cc. The center frequency is continuously tunable from 3.4 GHz to 11.1 GHz via current pulses of sub-millisecond duration applied to a small and nonvolatile magnetic bias assembly. This assembly is limited in the area over which it can achieve a large and uniform magnetic field, necessitating filters realized from small resonant cavities micromachined in thin films of Yttrium Iron Garnet. Filter insertion loss of 3.2 dB to 5.1 dB and out-of-band third order input intercept point greater than 41 dBm are achieved. The filter's broad frequency range, compact size, low insertion loss, high out-of-band linearity, and zero static power consumption are essential for protecting RF transceivers and antennas from interference, thus facilitating their use in mobile applications like IoT and 6G networks.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) devices combining piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials have emerged as powerful tools to miniaturize and enhance sensing and communication technologies. This paper examines recent developments in bulk acoustic wave (BAW) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) ME devices, which demonstrate unique capabilities in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing, compact antennas, and quantum control applications. Leveraging the mechanical resonance of BAW and SAW modes, ME sensors achieve the femto- to pico-Tesla sensitivity ideal for biomedical applications, while ME antennas, operating at acoustic resonance, allow significant size reduction, with high radiation gain and efficiency, which is suited for bandwidth-restricted applications. In addition, ME non-reciprocal magnetoacoustic devices using hybrid magnetoacoustic waves present novel solutions for RF isolation, which have also shown potential for the efficient control of quantum defects, such as negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV−) centers. Continued advancements in materials and device structures are expected to further enhance ME device performance, positioning them as key components in future bio-sensing, wireless communication, and quantum information technologies.

Abstract:Pulsed power technology is gradually forming a development trend of civil-military integration, which puts forward more requirements for pulsed power generators. This paper takes magnetic switches (MSs) as the starting point and reviews recent advancements in pulse generators based on MSs. First, the working mechanism of the MS "rapid inductance drop after magnetic core saturation" is analyzed. Second, the basic uses of MSs are introduced with specific examples, namely, magnetic compression unit, saturated pulse transformer, and magnetic delay switches. Then, the typical topologies of pulse generators based on MSs are discussed, including transmission line, Marx, Fitch, linear transformer driver, and semiconductor opening switch pumping circuits. These circuits' technical characteristics and parameter levels are highlighted. Finally, the existing problems and future development trends of MS-based solid-state pulse generators are discussed.
Development of transcranial magnetic stimulator and measurement of the magnetic field distribution

Abstract:This paper introduces general guidelines for designing and constructing a magnetic stimulator (MS). These guidelines cover the theoretical concepts, hardware aspects and necessary components. RLC model producing the impulses in MS is focused on and the way to calculate the parameters of the model is presented. Some factors that influence induced magnetic field are discussed. Experiments are carried through with self-developed round coil and 8-shaped, and Tesla meter is used to detect the magnetic fields. The experiments data show that the distribution of the induced magnetic fields by the two coils are tailored to those of theoretical calculation adopted now. A simulation experiment to measure magnetic field in brain has been completed.

Abstract:Surface acoustic wave(SAW)is a new means of exciting and controlling spin wave(SW),which has not only high excitation efficiency,but also long transmission length up to millimeter order.Based on the SAW-SW coupling(phonon-magnon coupling),a wide variety of new devices and applications such as high-sensitivity weak magnetic field sensors,energy-efficient spintronic devices,solid-state acoustic isolators,and nonreciprocal phase shifters,have been realized.Therefore,it is of great value to study the physical mechanism of magneto-acoustic coupling,develop new magneto-acoustic coupling effects,and improve the efficiency of magneto-acoustic coupling.In this work,different types of physical mechanisms of magneto-acoustic coupling are reviewed.The effective driven magnetic fields of magnetoelastic coupling,spin-vorticity coupling(including injection of alternating spin current from a non-magnetic layer and Barnett effect inside magnetic material itself),and magneto-rotation coupling under different modes of SAW excitation are compared.The angular dependence of these driven fields and the frequency dependence of the corresponding power absorption are discussed,which provides theoretical support for distinguishing and utilizing various magneto-acoustic coupling in practical applications.In addition,we also introduce two methods to realize nonreciprocal SAW transmission by magneto-acoustic coupling,including the helicity mismatch effect and nonreciprocal spin-wave dispersion magnetic structures,and discuss their physical mechanisms as well as advantages and disadvantages.For such magneto-acoustic nonreciprocal devices,the properties of higher isolation,lower insertion loss and wider bandwidth are always desired.In order to improve the properties of the devices,it is important to find magnetic structures with stronger SW nonreciprocity,reduce the insertion loss introduced by magnetic structure,and fully consider the effective driven field characteristics of different modes of SAW.We hope that this review can serve as a guide for future design and development of solid acoustic isolators and circulators in the RF and microwave frequency bands.

Abstract:Development of superconducting magnet science and technology requires a magnetic field with high strength and good quality. The pursuit of extremely high magnetic field is an eternal scientific goal for scientists and engineers. It is an exciting cutting-edge technology with full of challenges and has been essential for many significant discoveries in science and technology. Combined with power-electronic devices and related software, a whole magnet system can be built up as the key component of vari-ous types of scientific instruments and other equipment, and can be fund widespread applications in scientific research and industry. Magnet technology is currently playing a more and more important role in scientific and technological progress. Ultra-high magnetic fields help to give us much deeper understanding of the world of matter and have special significance for research into the origins of life and disease prevention. In this review article, basic magnet principles, methods of generating mag-netic fields, magnetic field applications, and numerical methods for the design of magnet structures are briefly introduced and reviewed.

Abstract:The magnetoelectric (ME) materials and related devices have been attracting increasing research attention over the last few years. They exhibit strong ME coupling effect at room temperature, and electric field control of magnetization or magnetic field control of ferroelectric polarization can be achieved. The ME coupling effect brings novel functionalities to develop ultra-fast, low-power, and miniaturized electronics. Recent progress shows the performance of ME materials is further improved and the materials are used to develop many new types of electronics such as high-speed memory, radio frequency resonator, compact ME antenna, and weak magnetic field sensor. In this review, we present the overview in those fields with emphasis on both the opportunities and challenges for the application of ME materials and devices in the cutting-edge technologies.

Abstract:The design of a metamaterial-loaded helical slow-wave structure (MHSWS) is proposed, facilitating the dual purpose of enabling forward-wave (FW) propagation for traveling-wave tubes (TWTs) at lower frequencies and backward-wave (BW) propagation for BW oscillators at higher frequencies within the propagation band. A practically feasible interaction structure is designed, and its dispersion and interaction characteristics are analyzed using CST microwave studio (CST-MWS). An in-depth electromagnetic (EM) field analysis of the proposed MHSWS is conducted, deriving dispersion and interaction impedance formulas to analyze its propagation characteristics comprehensively. Comparative analyses between theoretical and simulation results ensured the reliability of numerical characterizations for the structure, highlighting a strong agreement between theoretical and simulation outcomes. The designed MHSWS supported both FW and BW modes, along with the point of mode-degeneracy that facilitates the slowing and stopping of EM waves inside the structure. Leveraging its advanced propagation and interaction characteristics, the proposed MHSWS established its applicability to designing high-efficiency interaction circuits for vacuum electron device applications.

Abstract:Lately, R&D of microwave vacuum electron devices (MVEDs) has played a very important role in the technologies of broadcasting, communication, radar, remote imaging, electronic countermeasures, materials research, deep space exploration, and wave spectroscopy. In the 1970s, this widespread role could not have been predicted, as the development of vacuum electron devices faced a serious challenge from solid-state electron devices. However, in solid-state electron devices, the electron stream is a conduction (ohmic, collisional) current, whereas in vacuum electron devices, the current is a convection (ballistic, collisionless) current. So the vacuum is perfect for high-power devices needing high-power electron currents, especially because vacuum electron devices are intrinsically superior at handling high power or high power density, giving vacuum electronics research an edge in high power and high frequency [1]-[5].

Abstract:We theoretically studied the magnetostatic excitation in self-similar antiferromagnetic(AF)/nonmagnetic(NM) multilayers, where the AF and NM layers were arranged in a Thue-Morse sequence. The dispersion relation of magnetostatic spin waves and the precession amplitude of the total magnetization were achieved. It is shown that the distribution of eigenfrequencies possesses two bands of dual structures and each subband presents a hierarchical feature. The states in the finite system can be categorized to three types: critical states in the subband, extended states in the band, and localized surface states in the gaps. The multiformity in frequency spectra leads to the tunable magnetostatic wave, which may have potential applications in designing devices of magnetostatic waves for microwave communications.

Abstract:Acoustic wave in solid has two modes of propagation: the bulk acoustic wave (BAW), which propagates inside solid in the form of longitudinal or transverse wave, and the surface acoustic wave (SAW), which is generated on the surface of solid and propagates along the surface. In acoustic radio frequency (RF) technologies acoustic waves are used to intercept and process RF signals, which are typified by the rapidly developing RF filter technology. Acoustic filter has the advantages of small size, low cost, steady performance and simple fabrication, and is widely used in mobile communication and other fields. Due to the mature fabrication process and well-defined resonance frequency of acoustic device, acoustic wave has become an extremely intriguing way to manipulate magnetism and spin current, with the goal of pursuing miniaturized, ultra-fast, and energy-efficient spintronic device applications. The integration of magnetic materials into acoustic RF device also provides a new way of thinking about the methods of acoustic device modulation and performance enhancement. This review first summarizes various physical mechanisms of magneto-acoustic coupling, and then based on these mechanisms, a variety of magnetic and spin phenomena such as acoustically controlled magnetization dynamics, magnetization switching, magnetic domain wall and magnetic skyrmions generation and motion, and spin current generation are systematically introduced. In addition, the research progress of magnetic control of acoustic wave, the inverse process of acoustic control of magnetism, is discussed, including the magnetic modulation of acoustic wave parameters and nonreciprocal propagation of acoustic waves, as well as new magneto-acoustic devices developed based on this, such as SAW-based magnetic field sensors, magneto-electric antennas, and tunable filters. Finally, the possible research objectives and applications of magneto-acoustic coupling in the future are prospected. In summary, the field of magneto-acoustic coupling is still in a stage of rapid development, and a series of groundbreaking breakthroughs has been made in the last decades, and the major advances are summarized in this field. The field of magneto-acoustic coupling is expected to make further significant breakthroughs, and we hope that this review will further promote the researches of physical phenomena of the coupling between magnetism and acoustic wave, spin and lattice, and potential device applications as well.

A Mechanical Wave Switch with Tunable Frequency Output

Abstract:Various acoustic and mechanical wave components have been developed. Most of them focused on the control of energy flow. However, these waves are not only energy flow but also wave signals with a frequency dependence. In this Letter, we propose a mechanical wave switch (MWS) capable of controlling energy flow and output frequency simultaneously. It consists of a difference frequency generation (DFG) unit and a wave filter. The DFG unit consists of two mass blocks and a tension/compression asymmetrical bilinear spring, and the wave filter is a one-dimensional mass-spring lattice. Systematical calculations were carried out to identify the critical condition for the design of MWSs. Both numerical and experimental results demonstrate the capability of the proposed MWS to tune the energy flow and the output frequency of acoustic waves via a small amplitude control wave signal. The scale-independent MWS can be implemented at micro- and nanoscales.
Implementing Single-Scale Wavelet Transform Processor with Magnetostatic Surface Wave Device

Abstract:When the envelope of the conducting strips for the input transducer of magnetostatic surface wave (MSSW) device is designed according to the wavelet-function envelope, the impulse-response function of the input transducer for MSSW device is equal to the wavelet function, so that single-scale wavelet-transform processor of MSSW type is fabricated. First, according to the envelope function of the wavelet, the length function of the conducting strips is defined, then, the lengths of the conducting strips can be calculated from the length function of the conducting strips, finally, the input transducer can be designed according to the lengths and widths for the conducting strips. The compensation method of the insertion loss for single-scale wavelet transform processor of MSSW type is also given in the paper. When the output end of single-scale wavelet transform processor of MSSW type is connected to the amplifier, its insertion loss can be compensated.

Abstract:Metamaterials are composite artificial materials composed of sub-wavelength resonant building blocks designed with state-of-the-art configurations, which exhibit novel and unique electromagnetic (EM) properties. The building blocks are usually made of metallic material, where surface plasmon polaritons can be excited at the interface, leading to many interesting and promising phenomena and applications. However, some drawbacks are accompanied such as intrinsic loss, narrow working frequency, and tunability limitation. We have designed a class of metamaterials composed of building blocks made of ferrite materials, it is accordingly termed magnetic metamaterials (MM). It is demonstrated that with the MM we can construct a magnetically tunable negative index material with the impedance matched to the air. The excitation of the magnetic surface plasmon (MSP) resonance can also be observed in the MM. Due to the MSP resonance and the time reversal symmetry breaking nature of the MM, the unidirectional waveguiding of the EM wave is demonstrated.
Characteristics of Low-Harmonic Magnetosonic Waves in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves are electromagnetic waves that play important roles in the acceleration and scattering of radiation belt electrons. However, previous statistical analyses of the global MS wave distribution were mainly restricted to magnetic field measurements. In this study, we first report a low-harmonic MS wave event observed only by the electric field instrument in Van Allen Probes. The MS wave frequencies follow the local proton gyrofrequency (f(cp)), which suggests the characteristics of nearly local generation. We further statistically investigate similar wave events using Van Allen Probes data. The identified MS wave power exhibits peaks between 4f(cp) and 10f(cp), regardless of the L-shell, but it shows a dependence on magnetic local time. This work is supplemental to previous MS wave frequency spectra and provides new insights to better understand the source region of MS waves in the Earth's magnetosphere.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel v-type microstrip meander-line slow wave structure (MMSWS) is presented. With the electromagnetic simulation software HFSS, the comparisons of the dispersion characteristic and coupling impedance between the novel and traditional MMSWS are given. Then the cold-test characteristics of the v-type structure for different parameters are calculated. Also, the structure supported by dielectric slab is analyzed. The results demonstrate that the v-type structure has a better performance than the traditional in both bandwidth and coupling impedance, while the structure supported by dielectric slab has an even better performance than the former.
