Abstract:In order to eliminate the noise mixed in Electroencephalogram( EEG) and retain useful EEG information,an EEG de￣noising method based on adaptive threshold is proposed,which is improved on the basis of soft threshol￣ding. Firstly,high frequency coefficients and low frequency coefficients of multilayer signals are obtained by wavelet decomposition. Then,detail coefficients is processed by using the adaptive threshold. Finally,the original EEG signal is resumed by reconstructing shrinked detail coefficients. The final results show that the proposed de￣noising algorithm has perspective of higher SNR and lower RMSE compared to soft thresholding,hard thresholding and Gar￣rote thresholding.

Abstract:Wavelet packet transform (WPT) based feature extraction of the electroencephalogram (EEG) is introduced. Six-channel EEG data of four subjects were recorded while they performed three different mental tasks. Approximate one-second data segments were divided and transformed to multi-scale representations by dyadic wavelet packet decomposition channel by channel. Power values of different sub-spaces of six-channel EEG signals formed the feature vectors. A radial basis function (RBF) network was applied to classify the three task pairs. The average classification accuracy of four subjects over three task pairs is 85.3%. Compared with the two autoregressive (AR) model methods, wavelet packet transform would be a promising method to extract features from EEG signals.

Abstract:In brain-computer interfaces(BCIs),a novel method of extracting electroencephalography(EEG) features based on discrete wavelet transform(DWT) was proposed. The method aims at solving problems such as single information is used,large amount of data are required and the classification performance is low in BCIs.The characteristic of extracting features with wavelet transform and some representation manners of features were analyzed.The EEG signal was decomposed to six levels by Daubechies db4 wavelet function.A part of key approximation coefficients,wavelet coefficients and coefficient averages of each wavelet subband were extracted and formed a feature vector.The classification performance of extracted features was tested by an index called correct classification rate.The experiment results showed that the proposed method could extract substantial features using fewer data and displayed high classification performance.The method offers a fast and effective measure for recognizing human different intentions by EEG.

Abstract:Filtering and feature extraction are very important in the analysis and study of EEG signal under +Gz acceleration. In this study, a new filter of different frequency characteristics of EEG signal under +Gz acceleration is constructed and four kinds of rhythms of EEG signal are extracted by using wavelet packet transformation. EEG under different G loads is analyzed and compared, and then EEG dynamic characteristics are studied in order to analyze its advantages and disadvantages. Experimental results show that wavelet packet method can effectively suppress interference bands in EEG, such as EMG, power and so on, and effectively reflect the dynamic characteristics of different rhythms, exhibiting good characteristics. The proposed method is also applicable for analyzing and studying other dynamic biomedical signals.

Abstract:SUMMARY In this paper, a wavelet-based method is first presented for the calculation of the analytic counterpart of an energylimited real signal, and then used to estimate the instantaneous parameter(IP) of the signal. Compared to conventional method based on Hilbert transform(HT), the new method is proved to yield higher precision and better antinoise performance. Both model and field data processing show the validity of the method in IP estimate of seismic data from complex structured area.

Abstract:Robust and accurate spectral analysis for electroencephalogram (EEG) signal becomes more and more essential and crucial in psychological and neural studies. The traditional fixed precision Fourier Transform (FT) cannot well reveal the subtle difference and characteristics among individuals. In this paper, a Constant Q Transform (CQT) based approach for EEG spectral analysis was proposed in order to match each person's features and emphasis the spectrum deviation among different capacitive activities. Firstly, the subject-independent features were extracted based on frequency structure of EEG signal. Then, the adaptive bandwidth was calculated. After that, the CQT based spectrum were acquired using these adaptive frequencies. We experiment with analog data to evaluate the performance of CQT based process and also provide detail comparison in real EEG dataset of eyes closed and eyes open. From the results, two improvements are made based on psychology basis: (a) CQT based unequal-interval spectral analysis method can not only avoid unbalance samples among EEG bands, but also reduce the calculation; (b) the classification ratio has been improved by the CQT-SA algorithm. The CQT based spectral analysis method can become an universal spectral analysis tool for EEG study.

Abstract:Wavelet transform is an analysis method that combines time, frequency (or scale) domains. It has: (1) Multi-resolution; (2) The relative bandwidth is constant; (3) Proper selection of basic wavelet can make wavelet have the ability to represent the local characteristics of signals in both time and frequency domains, and it is known as "the microscope for analyzing signals". An analysis method of EEG signal based on autoregressive model (ARM) and wavelet transform is proposed, and it is used to eliminate noise interference in EEG signal. Wavelet transform is a multi-resolution time scale analysis method, which can divide the signal into sub-band signals of different frequency bands. According to this characteristic of wavelet transform, the EEG signals obtained by sampling are decomposed and denoised at various scales, and the results of decomposition and denoising at various scales are given. Wavelet transform can effectively remove noise interference from EEG signals. Wavelet transform is a multi resolution time scale analysis method that can divide signals into subband signals of different frequency bands. According to this characteristic of wavelet transform, the sampled EEG signal is decomposed and denoised at various scales, and the decomposition and denoising results at each scale are given. Wavelet transform can effectively remove noise interference from EEG signals.

Abstract:A method based on wavelet transform has been developed for detecting QRS-waves.The MIT-BIH database is used to evaluate this method, and the accuracy is over 99.5%. Then the method is implanted into the embedded system to implement the real-time detection of ECG. This method has good performances in time-delay and computation.

Abstract:Detection of epileptic waves in EEG is particularly helpful in the interpretation of the underlying process in seizures. This study is aimed at providing a new method for automatic detection of epileptic waves through the wavelet analysis of EEGs. It mainly deals with the detection of spikes or spike-waves based on wavelet transform. Since spikes and spike-waves contain high frequency energy, they will be represented in a particular scale localized in a small time window. According to these feature waveforms of epileptic waves, a continuous processing system for epileptic waveforms detection is constructed. We apply discrete wavelet transform on EEGs. Because of the time-frequency domain localization of wavelet transforms, we can get the local maximal positions across several successive dyadic scales of wavelet transform. And these positions indicate the points of sharp transitions in EEGs. Then we calculate the distance between every two successive maximal positions in each scale. This distance stands for the period of subwave. Furthermore, the distribution of subwave periods of each scale can be worked out. Then, comparing the distribution of normal EEG's and epileptic EEG's. The difference between these two waveforms provides us the criteria for automatic detection and classification. In order to reduce the detection workload, we also compare the detection efficiency of each scale. The scale that provides highest accuracy is selected for our automatic detection system. The results presented in this study show that scale 3 provides the best detection accuracy. So, scale 3 is deemed to be the proper scale for automatic detection. This system has the following advantages: (1) Reduced the workload significantly by selecting proper scale(s) for automatic selection; (2) Enhanced the detection accuracy by selecting proper criteria and threshold; (3) Capable of continuous detection; (4) It is also fit for the detection of other biomedical signals. This system showed good performance, and the initial clinical results obtained are also encouraging.

Abstract:Current wavelet thresholding methods for cardiogram signals captured by flexible wearable sensors face a challenge in achieving both accurate thresholding and real-time signal denoising. This paper proposes a real-time accurate thresholding method based on signal estimation, specifically the normalized ACF, as an alternative to traditional noise estimation without the need for parameter fine-tuning and extensive data training. This method is experimentally validated using a variety of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals from different databases, each containing specific types of noise such as additive white Gaussian (AWG) noise, baseline wander noise, electrode motion noise, and muscle artifact noise. Although this method only slightly outperforms other methods in removing AWG noise in ECG signals, it far outperforms conventional methods in removing other real noise. This is attributed to the method's ability to accurately distinguish not only AWG noise that is significantly different spectrum of the ECG signal, but also real noise with similar spectra. In contrast, the conventional methods are effective only for AWG noise. In additional, this method improves the denoising visualization of the measured ECG signals and can be used to optimize other parameters of other wavelet methods to enhancing the denoised periodic signals, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy.

Method of Electrooculogram Artifacts Elimination in Electroencephalogram

Abstract:Based on the wavelet packet analysis, a novel method is proposed to eliminate electrooculogram (EOG)-artifact from electroencephalogram (EEG). It consists of three steps: (1) EEG decomposing based on wavelet packet; (2) EOG detection and elimination from low-frequency wavelet components; (3) Reconstruction of EEG signals using FP1 signals as reference. Ninety sets of EEG from ten subjects were processed and the results were compared with the other four conventional methods. The results show that this method is more effective on EOG artifacts elimination and the processing rate is 2-3 times faster than that of the independent component analysis (ICA)-based method.

Abstract:In this paper, a robust method for the extraction of instantaneous attributes is proposed in wavelet domain. A new class of analytic wavelets, the Generalized Morse Wavelets (GMWs), which have some desirable properties, are applied during the procedure of the proposed method. Compared to the conventional method based on Hilbert transform (HT), the new method is proved to yield higher precision and better anti-noise performance. Experimental results on synthetic signals and real seismic data show the validity of the method.

Abstract:With the extensive use of power switching devices, the voltage and current signals become nonstationary. Meanwhile, the interaction between power networks and renewable generations causes sub and/or interharmonics in the voltage and current signals. This paper proposes a method to realize precision measurement of instantaneous power quantities in case of nonstationary signals with sub and/or interharmonics existing. A set of new scaling filter and wavelet filter which have narrower transition band is designed, and the new measurement method based on wavelet packet transform is proposed. Simulation tests validate the well performance of the new method.

Abstract:This paper gives a new method of electroencephalogram(EEG) ocular artifact(OA) correction based on stationary wavelet transform(SWT) in the case of unknowing uncontaminated baseline EEG and electrooculogy ram(EOG).The proposed method for EEG OA correction based on SWT consists of the following steps: SWT is applied to the corrupted EEG;the threshold of the coefficients in the lower(frequency) bands is performed twice;the de-noised signal is reconstructed.Simulation result indicates this(new method) can remove OA effectively and it suits for the artifacts produced by blinks and eye movements.(Finally),the availability of this method is proved by comparing with different methods.

Abstract:<p>The transformation procedure of deriving amplitude-integrated (a)EEG from raw EEG has been well described in a purely analog prototype, however the inherent specifications within the prototype are not established or disclosed. In this paper, we aim at providing an accessible and digitalized aEEG algorithm that is evaluated quantitatively and validated in clinical practice. The algorithms, especially the filter design and envelope detection methods, applied in the transformation procedure, are investigated. The effectiveness and feasibility of the filters namely, symmetric and asymmetric filters followed with four different envelope detection methods (low-pass filtering, squaring and low-pass filtering, Hilbert transform, and moving average) are evaluated on a clinical dataset collected at Children's Hospital of Fudan University which involves 30 infants. Compared to the outputs of the commercial available (a)EEG device NicoletOne, the Spearman rank correlations (SRs) of the upper/lower tracings of aEEG using the asymmetric filter and squaring and low-pass filtering-based envelope detection method can reach over 0.97. Meanwhile, the SRs of the upper and the lower margin amplitude of aEEG can achieve 0.98 and 0.97, respectively. Furthermore, the accuracy of the obtained aEEG tracings in identifying the aEEG background activities can achieve 100%. To our knowledge, this is the first work to present a digital procedure to transform the EEG into aEEG by assessing the impact of different filters and envelope detection methods. With the high performance of the proposed approach, this work can promote the standardization of aEEG transformation procedure and the exploration of the sophisticated automatic aEEG interpretation algorithms.</p>

Abstract:This paper explores the use of wavelet packet analysis to extract features from spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) during three different mental tasks. Artifact-free EEG segments are transformed to multi-scale representations by dyadic wavelet packet decomposition channel by channel. Their feature vectors formed by energy values of different sub-spaces EEG components are used as inputs of a radial basis function network to test the classification accuracies of three task pairs. The results indicate that the classification accuracies of the wavelet packet analysis method are significantly better than those of autoregressive model method. Wavelet packet analysis would be a promising method to extract features from EEG signals.

Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common complex brain disorders which is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by paroxysmal abnormal super-synchronous electrical activity of brain neurons. This paper proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG) based real-time approach to detect epilepsy seizures. Discrete wavelet transform and eight eigenvalues’ algorithms are applied to extract features in different sub-frequency bands. Then support vector machine is employed for three-classes classification of health control, seizure free and seizure active, and finally RUSBoosted tree Ensemble method is used for real-time seizure onset detection. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using two public datasets: one short-term dataset named UB and one long-term dataset named CHB-MIT. The results show that the algorithm achieves 97% accuracy and 96.67% sensitivity in the three-classes classification of health control, seizure-free and seizure-active groups in UB dataset, and 96.38% accuracy, 96.15% sensitivity, 3.24% false positive rate for the real time seizure onset detection in CHB-MIT Dataset.
