Abstract:Laboratory bioassay and field experiment were conducted to evaluate the toxicity and field control efficacy of pyriproxyfen and its mixture with organosilicon to B-biotype Bemisia tabaci.The laboratory bioassay indicated that pyriproxyfen had strong ovicidal activity against B.tabaci and high activity against B.tabaci nymphs,but had low toxicity to B.tabaci adults.After the adults were exposed to pyriproxyfen-treated eggplant leaves for 48 h,their oviposition on untreated eggplant leaves was not affected,but the egg hatching rate was sharply lowered,suggesting that pyriproxyfen had high transovarial activity.Organosilicon auxiliary agent did not show any synergistic effect when mixed with pyriproxyfen.Field trials showed that pyriproxyfen could effectively control the B.tabaci nymphs on eggplants,but could not effectively control the adults.

Abstract:Determination on toxicity of Imidacloprid, Avermectins and BT resulted that Imidacloprid and Avermectines had significant effect on Opogona sacchari at the early and middle phase while BT at the last phase. Analysis demonstrated that the optimal concentration of Imidacloprid, Avermectins and BT was 1: 700, 1: 1500 and 1: 1500. The best of the three pesticides was Avermectins with 96.95% mean death rate at 1000 fold, and Imidacloprid with 65.25% mean death rate at 700 fold, and BT with only 18.1% at 1000 fold.

Abstract:Because spodoptera exigua Hubner occurred less generations a year and damaged seriously by its larva outbreak,it was controlled by spraying high effective pesticides,namely chlorfluazuron or tebufenozide during peak of larvae and chlorpyrifos,tralomethrin or methomyl during84%larvae occur -ring.Because plutella xylostella(L.)occurred more generations a year and damaged seriously by suddenly in creasing the number of larvae,it was controlled by spraying persistent pesticides,namely abamectin or Bt dur ing16%larvae occurring and chlorpyrifos during peak of larvae.

Abstract:The field trial was carried out to study and compare control efficiency of ten nematicides(10% fosthiazate GR,48% chlorpyrifos EC,1.8% avermectins EC,15.5% ememectin benzoate·chlorpyrifos EC,5% carbosulfan GR,5% carbosulfan·chlorpyrifos GR,5% cadusafos GR,10 billion/g paecilomyces lilacinus,0.5% avermectins WP,15% Chinese herbal medicine WP) on cucumber root knot nematodes.The results showed that,the five nematicides,10% fosthiazate GR,5% carbosulfan·chlorpyrifos GR,5% cadusafos GR,10 billion/g paecilomyces lilacinus and 0.5% avermectins WP,showed good control effects on cucumber root knot nematodes after 45 days and 70 days of spraying the nematicides.And the five nematicides were lower toxic and more safety for vegetable products,and they could be used to control cucumber root knot nematodes in the future.

Abstract:The chemical pesticides have played important roles in controlling pests,reducing the hazards and ensuring food security,while long-term irrational use of chemicals resulted in many disadvantages such as 3R problem (Resistance,Residue and Resurgence).This paper reviewed the research and application technologies of ‘Green Plant Protection’ on pest management in paddy fields in China based on reducing the initial population size of rice insect pests,decreasing population growth rate of rice insect pests,increasing environmental resistance to insect pests in rice-based ecosystem,application of biological control agents and chemical control for emergency.A suitable green control technology system should be set up in different places by selection of different technologies based on local conditions,climatic conditions and characteristics of rice pests.Then,it is encouraged to promote the application of the suitable green control technology system with demonstration area construction and multiform,multi-level training to cater to the aim of reduction in chemical insecticide use and damage by rice insect pests.
Laboratory Screening of Alternative Insecticides for Highly Toxic Insecticides Against the Striped Stem Borer (chilo Suppressalis) on Rice

Abstract:To provide alternative insecticides for rice insect control,the toxicities against the striped stem borer,Chilo suppressalis of 32 insecticides fallen into seven different classes were evaluated by the topical application method in 2005.Efficacy data showed that seven novel insecticides(abamectin,emamectin bezoate,fipronil,tebufenozide,furan tebufenozide,hexaflumuron and chlorfluazuron) and a few organophosphates(such as phoxim,chlorpyrifos,quinaphos and pyridaphenthion) were potential alternatives for highly toxic pesticides in field trials.In addition,the susceptibilities of four field populations of C.suppressalis to 10 pyrethroids were estimated in laboratory in 2004 and 2005.The results showed that 7 pyrethroids with high fish-toxicity(beta-cyfluthrin,lambda-cyhalothrin,beta-cypermethrin,deltamethrin,S-fenvalerate,alpha-cypermethrin and fenpropathrin) were more effective against C.suppressalis than most of organophosphates.It was also observed that the field population of C.suppressalis from Rui′an,Zhejiang(RA05) showed high levels of resistance to some pyrethroids with high-fish toxicity,such as beta-cyfluthrin,lambda-cyhalothrin,beta-cypermethrin and deltamethrin(their resistance ratios were 166.7,51.9,41.3 and 36.8,respectively),providing the first evidence of the resistance development to pyrethroids in field populations of C.suppressalis,although these high fish-toxicity pyrethroids were banned from using in rice paddy.Three compounds with low fish-toxicity(cycloprothrin,etofenprox and silafluofen) showed higher efficacy against C.suppressalis than triazophos in the triazophos-resistant population(RA05).Therefore,these low fish-toxicity pyrethroids can be considered as candidates for replacing highly toxic organophosphates and resistance management for the rice striped stem borer.

Abstract:Four pesticides were tested in the plot and production demonstration tests over 30 ha area to select the best pesticide for controlling Venturia pirina Aderh in pear production.The results showed that 40% Fuxing EC and 6% ascorbic acid solution had the significant effects in controlling Venturia pirina Aderh and the average controlling effect of applying 40% Fuxing EC with 1∶6000～8000 or 6% ascorbic acid solution with 1∶2000 was up to above 90%.
Monitoring of Early Stage Resistance to Novel Classes of Insecticides in Spodoptera Exigua (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)

Abstract:Several classes of new insecticides with novel mode of action,such as emamectin benzoate,abamectin,indoxacarb,chlorfenapy,methoxyfenozide,JS118 and tebufenozide were developed or introduced to control the beet armyworm,spodoptera exigua(Hubner)in China.Resistance of this pest to many conventional insecticides has been reported in different countries and areas,but there is few evidence of resistance to these new insecticides in beet armyworm as yet.In order to make good use of these new insecticides and implement effective resistance management strategy,susceptibility to several classes of new insecticides was determined using leaf-dipping method in field populations of Spodoptera exigua from six areas of Jiangsu and Henan Province,in China.The results showed that in all six field populations tested with abamectin,three populations from Fengxian and Fu'ning counties,Jiangsu province and Henan province were susceptible or had decreased susceptibility(2.5~4.4-fold),one population from Dafeng county,Jiangsu province developed low level resistance(5.2-fold),and two populations from Jiangning and Sheyang counties,Jiangsu province first developed moderate levels of resistance(10.4~14.2-fold).In all four populations tested,three populations from Henan province and Jiangning,Fu'ning and Fengxian of Jiangsu province were susceptible(2.3~2.9-fold)to indoxacarb except that one population from Fengxian of Jiangsu province had low level of resistance(6.8-fold)to indoxacarb.Four populations from Henan province and Jiangning,Fu'ning and Sheyang counties of Jiangsu province were susceptible to emamectin benzoate(RR0.6~2.0-fold).In case of chlorfenapy,all four populations tested were susceptible(1.5~2.7-fold).Similarly,all populations tested were susceptible to methoxyfenozide(0.4~1.7-fold)and JS118(0.3~1.3-fold).In all six populations tested with tebufenozide,four populations from Dafeng,Jiangning and Fengxian of Jiangsu province and Henan province were susceptible(1.6~2.5-fold),and two populations from Fu'ning and Sheyang,Jiangsu province had decreased susceptibility(3.2-fold).These results provide a guideline for developing a more effective resistance management program for beet armyworm.

Abstract:Sweet potato stem nematode disease is seriously affects the yield and quality of sweet potato, and soil treatment with pesticides is mainly used to prevent the disease. The diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities treated with different pesticides were analyzed, and the pesticide residues in soil and sweet potato, and the impact on sweet potato yield was investigated. Sweet potato stem nematode disease is a devastating disease, which seriously affects the yield and quality of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.). At present, soil treatment with pesticides is mainly used to prevent sweet potato stem nematode disease. In this study, Illumina MiSeq high‐throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities treated with different pesticides. At the same time, high performance liquid chromatography was used to determine the pesticide residues in soil and sweet potato, and the impact on sweet potato yield was investigated. Kruskal–Wallis test was used to analyze the four α‐diversity indexes of soil under different pesticide treatments, and the differences were not significant (p > 0.05), indicating that there was no significant difference in the diversity and abundance of bacterial and fungal communities in soil under different pesticide treatments. The results of principal coordinate analysis showed that there was no significant difference in bacterial and fungal community structure among different pesticide treatments (p > 0.05). Pesticide residue analysis and yield statistics of sweet potato showed that the residual amount of three kinds of pesticides in sweet potato did not exceed the maximum limit stipulated by the current National Standards for Food safety (GB2763‐2021). When 5% chlorpyrifos phoxim particles were applied at 15.18 kg/acre, sweet potato was unaffected by pests and diseases basically, and the yield was the highest.

Efficacy and Economic Analysis of Formulation and Dosage of Pymetrozine in Controlling Rice Planthoppers

Abstract:Field experiments in three sites in Zhejiang province were carried out for evaluation of efficacy and economic efficiency of formulation and dosage of pymetrozine in controlling rice planthoppers,by economic threshold model-based simple judgment rule of chemical control.Wettable granule(WG) of pymetrozine was as effective as suspension emulsion(SE) with the same rate of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 in controlling the small brown planthopper(SBPH),Laodelphax striatellus,in rice panicle.Rates of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 and 112.5 g a.i.·hm-2 of 50% pymetrozine WG had efficacies of 60%-97% from 1 to 21 days after treatment(DAT) for controlling SBPH and the white-backed planthopper,Sogatella furcifera,in mid-season of rice growth.Same rates of 50% pymetrozine WG obtained the efficacies of 77%-98% for the brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens,from 4 to 21 DAT.The trends of control efficacies for the three planthoppers species in the two experimental sites were similar and could be well-fitted by Logistic models against DAT and reached the final maximum value of 98%,suggesting both the rates of the WG formulation of pymetrozine have fast and sustainable controlling effect for at least 21 days.The economic threshold model-based simple judgment rule of chemical control indicated that 50% pymetrozine WG in a rate of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 is the optimal selection in control of the three species of rice planthoppers in both japonica rice and indica hybrid rice.

Abstract:In order to obtain fungicides with high efficiency , low toxicity , and less pollution in controlling citrus an-thracnose, which caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz., the toxicity of pyraclostrobin , azoxystrobin, pro-chloraz, pyraclostrobin· me-tiram, thiophanate-methyl and iprovalicarb to a strain of C.gloeosporioides was respec-tively tested by mycelium growth rate and spore germination .The results showed that the effective dose to reduce my-celial growth of C.gloeosporioides by 50%(EC50 values) were 0.81, 2.58, 0.066, 4.97, 1555.15 and 237.98 μg · mL-1 , whereas the EC 50 values of spore germination to pyraclostrobin , azoxystrobin , prochloraz and pyraclostrobin· me-tiram were 0.93 , 14.34 , 4.47 and 5.29μg· mL-1 .Field experiments showed that 95%of above citrus anthrac-nose could be inhibited by azoxystrobin , prochloraz , iprovalicarb and pyraclostrobin· me-tiram with the recommended concentrations on citrus anthracnose .Conclusively , azoxystrobin , prochloraz , iprovalicarb and pyraclostrobin· me-ti-ram are effective in controlling citrus anthracnose .
Evaluation of Interactive Efficacy of Two Mycoinsecticides and Low Application Rate Imidacloprid in Controlling Greenhouse Whitefly Trialeurodes Vaporariorum (homoptera: Aleyrodidae)

Abstract:The interactive effects of pure emulsifiable formulations (10(10) conidia.ml-1) of Beauveria bassiana and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus conidia and 1% and 3% of imidacloprid 10% WP were tested for controlling greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, on lettuce grown in four polyethylene film-covered greenhouses (5 m x 100 m) in Kunming, Yunnan. Six fungal treatments, two imidacloprid ones, and one water-spray control were included in the experiment, with each being replicated in three plots (7 m x 5 m.plot-1). For each of the treatments, 1000-fold aqueous dilution (10(7) conidia.ml-1) was sprayed twice at a 15-d interval, with the first spray given on day 11 after lettuce transplantation. Counts of live and dead whiteflies from each treatment were made on the initial day, and then, once every five days. During a 30-d period of observation from August 20, the two applications of the fungal formulations alone or those containing low rates of imidacloprid 10% WP effectively protected the lettuce from damage by T. vaporariorum, and generated relative efficacies. Whitefly density decreased > 95%, which was significantly higher than that attributed to the low application rates of imidacloprid 10% WP. Based on the estimations of relative efficacy and percent density decrease, P. fumosoroseus treatments controlled the whiteflies better than B. bassiana ones, and the effects of both fungi on the pest population were apparently enhanced with the quantity of imidacloprid added. The differences among the fungal treatments in the two estimations were larger during the first 10 days, but decreased thereafter, becoming insignificant on day 10 after the second spray. The results indicated that the fungal formulations tested in this study are of great potential for practical use in whitefly control, and their efficacy could be enhanced with low rates of imidacloprid.

Efficacy of Emulsifiable Formulations of Two Entomopathogenic Fungi Against Small Green Leafhoppers on Tea Plant

Abstract:A field trial was conducted to test the efficacy of emulsifiable formulations of Beauveria bassiana (Bb) and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Pf) conidia in controlling small green leafhoppers (Empoasca spp.) on tea plant in a hillside tea garden located in Shuichang, Zhejiang during mid-summer 2002. Both Bb and Pf formulations contained 10(10) conidia x ml(-1). Adding 3% of imidacloprid 10% WP to each fungal formulation (W/V) resulted in two other formulations, i.e., Bb-imidacloprid mixture (BbIM) and Pf-imidacloprid mixture (PfIM). Besides the four formulations, a mineral oil-based liquid used to formulate the fungal conidia and containing 3% of imidacloprid 10% WP (OBLI) was also tested, and water spray was used as control (CK). Each of the treatments included three 60-m2 plots (replicates), which were sprayed twice with a 500-fold aqueous dilution of the corresponding formulation or preparation at a 12-d interval. Based on the leafhopper densities estimated by sampling in all plots at 3- or 4-d intervals after the first spray, the spray of BbIM or PfIM could better control the leafhoppers than the spray of Bb or Pf formulation. The maximal efficacy relative to CK reached 83.4% and 71.3% in the BbIM and PfIM treatments, respectively. Estimates of field efficacy obtained during the 25-d period after the first spray was 66.8% for BbIM, 62.1% for PfIM, 50.3% for OBLI, 49.5% for Bb, and 19.0% for Pf, respectively. A discussion was also given on the effect of local weather pattern and leafhopper population age structure on the results of the field trial, and on the application techniques to enhance the efficacy of mycoinsecticides against Empoasca species on tea plant.

Abstract:Verticillium wilt caused by Verticillium spp.,results in severe yield and quality losses in strawberry.In this study,composite biological agent was used to control verticillium wilt in strawberry and achieved good control efficacy.Under field conditions,the average biocontrol efficacy on the 30th d after treatment with the agent reached 76.8%,and on the 150th d yield increase was 133.6% in invaded fields and 25.8% in healthy fields in Zhenjiang and Yangzhou,respectively.

Abstract:Six insecticides were evaluated in a replicated field experiment at Gonzales, California, for control of the potato tuberworm,Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), and the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Azodrin®, methomyl, Stauffer N 4543 (O-isobutyl ethylphosphonodithioate S-ester with N-(mercaptomethyl) phthalimide) and azinphosmethyl were applied as foliage sprays by ground sprayer at 2-week intervals. The systemic insecticides, aldicarb (Temik®) and carbofuran (Furadan®) formulated as 10% granules, were applied to the soil as side dress treatments on the same day that the spray treatments were begun. Aldicarb granules were also applied topically so that the granules fell on the young plants and on the soil surface.Azinphosmethyl, Stauffer N 4543, Azodrin® and methomyl effectively controlled the tuberworm larvae in the foliage but effective control of tuberworms in the harvested tubers occurred only where azinphosmethyl, methomyl and Stauffer N 4543 were used. The granule applications of carbofuran and aldicarb were totally ineffective in controlling the potato tuberworm.Effective green peach aphid control was obtained with Azodrin® spray and the two granular aldicarb treatments. The side dressed application of aldicarb appeared to provide better green peach aphid control than did the soil surface application.
Effects of Paecilomyces lilacinus and Bacillus pumilus on stem nematode and rhizosphere bacterial communities of sweet potato

Abstract:Stem nematode ( Ditylenchus destructor Thorne) is considered one of the most economically devastating species affecting sweet potato production. Biocontrol offers a sustainable strategy for nematode control. This study conducted a pot experiment to evaluate the biocontrol efficacy of Paecilomyces lilacinus CS-Z and Bacillus pumilus Y-26 against the stem nematode, as well as to examine their influence on the bacterial communities in the sweet potato rhizosphere. The findings indicated that B.pumilus Y-26 and P.lilacinus CS-Z exhibited respective suppression rates of 82.9% and 85.1% against the stem nematode, while also stimulating sweet potato plant growth. Both high-throughput sequencing and Biolog analysis revealed distinct impacts of the treatments on the bacterial communities. At the phylum level, B.pumilus Y-26 enhanced the abundance of Actinobacteria but reduced the abundance of Cyanobacteria , with P.lilacinus CS-Z exhibiting similar effects. Additionally, the treatment with B.pumilus Y-26 resulted in increased abundances of Crossiella , Gaiella , Bacillus , and Streptomyces at the genus level, while the treatment with P.lilacinus CS-Z showed increased abundances of Crossiella and Streptomyces . In contrast, the abundance of Pseudarthrobacter was reduced in the treatment with B.pumilus Y-26. Conversely, the application of the nematicide fosthiazate exhibited minor influence on the bacterial community. The findings indicated that the application of P.lilacinus CS-Z and B.pumilus Y-26 led to an increase in the relative abundances of beneficial microorganisms, including Gaiella , Bacillus , and Streptomyces , in the rhizosphere soil. In conclusion, P.lilacinus CS-Z and B.pumilus Y-26 demonstrated their potential as environmentally friendly biocontrol agents for managing stem nematode disease of sweet potato.

Abstract:Abstract Sweetpotato is an important crop whose roots are consumed by people worldwide. Meloidogyne enterolobii stands out as a highly deleterious variant among the species of root-knot nematode that causes significant damage in sweetpotato. In the present study, the activity of four nematicides against M. enterolobii was assessed both in vitro and in growth cabinet experiments. After 48 hours of exposure, fluopyram and cyclobutrifluram had a greater negative effect on the motility of M. enterolobii second-stage juveniles (J2s) compared to fluensulfone and hymexazol, with respective median effective concentration (EC 50 ) values of 0.204, 0.423, 22.335 and 216.622 mg L −1 . When M. enterolobii eggs were incubated for 72 hours at the highest concentration of each nematicides, the inhibitory hatching effect of cyclobutrifluram (2.5 mg L −1 ), fluopyram (1.25 mg L −1 ) and fluensulfone (80 mg L −1 ) surpassed 85%, whereas hymexazol (640 mg L −1 ) was only 67%. Similar results were observed in growth cabinet experiments as well. The disease index (DI) and gall index (GI) were significantly decreased by all four nematicides compared to the control. However, the application of hymexazol did not yield a statistically significant difference in the egg masses index compared to the control, a finding which may be attributed to its potentially limited penetrability through the eggshell barrier. Overall, this study has demonstrated that all four nematicides effectively suppress M. enterolobii in sweetpotato, and this is the first report on the nematicidal activity of cyclobutrifluram and hymexazol against M. enterolobii .

Abstract:Field efficacy trials of different pesticides against Pieris rapae and Plutella xylostella showed that seven pesticides had certain control effects against P.rapae and P. xylostella. 240 g/L Chlorfenapyr SC had the most ideal control effect,with quick effect and long persistence,and the control effects against P. rapae and P. xylostella were 91. 96% and 95. 73% after application for 7 d,respectively. 25% Thiamethoxam WDG 3 000 times dilution had the poorest control effect,and quick effect and persistence were not ideal; the control effects against P. rapae and P. xylostella were 49. 21% and 57. 20% after application for 7 d,respectively. The remaining pesticides had good control effect against both P. rapae and P. xylostella,with certain persistence. Slight injury such as yellowing tender leaves appeared in the area treated with 50% thiocyclam SP,although the injury was reversible,it was still not recommended to use; no other treatments had adverse effects on growth of cabbage.
