Abstract:Batch distillation columns are frequently started up with a different initial reboiler charge. A proper initial state is required for simulation and optimization of such processes, but it has been a non-trivial task to obtain it. In this work, a model to express startup behaviors of batch columns starting from an empty cold state is proposed to address this issue. Each tray is described beginning with a non-equilibrium phase in which only mass and energy transfer is taking place, to an equilibrium phase in which the vapor–liquid equilibrium is being held. The switching point between these two phases is determined by the bubble-point temperature at the operating pressure. The equilibrium state is reached tray by tray from bottom to top of the column, while the liquid holdup on the trays is mainly filled in the opposite direction. A difficulty in solving the model equations is that the number of variables of the trays is not the same when their state switches from a phase to another. Trivial equations are introduced to deal with this problem. gproms is used as the simulation platform. The startup of a three-component batch distillation column is simulated with this model and the results are compared with those from an equilibrium model. The model proposed is verified through experiment on a pilot batch plant with a bubble-cap tray column to separate a methanol–water mixture.
