Abstract:This paper proposes a unequal loss protection scheme for video stream.This scheme is suit for packet loss networks and Group of Picture(GOP) level oriented.By using the unequal significance in different frames in GOP, different amounts of Forward Error Correction(FEC) packets are allocated to different frames on GOP level.It adopts inter-frame packets interlacing mechanism to make this scheme more robust against burst packet loss.Simulation results show that this scheme can improve video receiving quality under different channel loss patterns.

Abstract:In order to improve error resilient ability and transmission efficiency for image transmission over wireless channels, a joint source channel coding (JSCC) scheme was proposed in this paper, in which adaptive image segmentation and irregular low-density parity check (LDPC) was fitted together. At first, an adaptive image segmentation method according to the pixel intensity was designed to segment an image into different region of interest (ROI) with different level of significance. Then, a novel irregular LDPC with weight-increasing parity-check (WIPC) matrix (WIPC-LDPC) was put forward, which can easily realize unequal error protection (UEP) scheme. At last, the adaptive segmentation and WIPC-LDPC coding were combined together to achieve JSCC: the different significance level ROI from the adaptive segmentation were coded by WIPC-LDPC with dissimilar degree bit nodes to achieve different level of protection. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can support robust image transmission with not only high objective PSNR but also excellent subjective visual quality

Abstract:In order to improve error resilient ability and transmission efficiency for image transmission over wireless channels,a joint source channel coding(JSCC) scheme was proposed,in which adaptive segmentation and irregular low-density parity check(LDPC) were fitted together.Adaptive segmentation can segment an image into different size of subblocks with different level of significance.High degree bit nodes within an irregular LDPC code have more powerful error-correcting ability than that of low degree ones and can provide unequal error protection(UEP).So the adaptive segmentation and irregular LDPC coding were combined together to achieve JSCC.Different significance level image subblocks from the adaptive segmentation were coded by irregular LDPC with dissimilar degree bit nodes to obtain UEP scheme.Simulation showed that the proposed scheme could support robust image transmission in an effective way with high visual quality,and that compared with JPEG images which used EEP thesis PSNR was improved 17.78 dB at 1.6 dB SNR.
Error Concealment for Whole Frame Losses in H264

Abstract:An error concealment mechanism based on encoder and decoder was proposed for whole frame packet lost in network transmission.In decoder,some pixels were directly recovered from the previous frame according to the hypothesis of motion continuity.Each 4×4 block was classified to different types in order to recover other invalidated pixels.Then two different methods,one based on motion prediction and block match,another based on spatial interpolation,were used to recover the invalidated pixels.In encoder,both long reference frames and short reference frames were adopted.The reference frames were adjusted to stop error propagation by using the feedback of the receiver.Experimental results show that the method outperforms on both visual quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR),and can be effective to stop error propagation.Meanwhile the method can satisfy the real time request.
A Network-Aware Error-Resilient Method Using Prioritized Intra Refresh for Wireless Video Communications

Abstract:We propose a novel prioritized intra refresh method for the wireless video communication. The proposed method considers the characteristics of the human visual system, the error-sensitivity of the bitstream, and the state of the time-varying wireless channel jointly. An expected perceptual distortion model was used to adjust the intra refresh rate adaptively. This model consists of the perceptual weight map based on an attention model, the bit error probability map based on bitstream size, and the dynamic channel state information (CSI). Experimental results indicate that, compared with other intra refresh methods that consider only the content of the video or the CSI, the proposed method improves the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the whole frame by about 0.5 dB, and improves the average PSNR of the attention-area by about 0.8 dB.

Abstract:The hierarchical structure of JPEG2000 stream calls for unequal error protection(UEP) schemes to achieve robustness efficiently.In this paper,a novel unequal error protection scheme is proposed for JPEG2000 image transmission,which encodes each bit-plane with ERAC of different code rate.Comparing with UEP schemes based on channel coding,the proposed scheme reserves the structure of JPEG2000 standard streams and avoids complicate channel framing process.Comparison with published equal error protection scheme proves the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:In low bit-rate packet-based video communications,loss of packet usually results in whole-frame losses.The algorithm dealing with the problem of whole frame loss is proposed in this paper.Rational interpolation is firstly applied to generate accurate dense motion field based on decoded block-based motion field.Then the previous image pixels are projected onto missing frame along the motion vector direction.The identification of overlapped and occluded areas is also used to improve error concealment performance.Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other techniques in peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR) and provides good visual quality.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of the falling decoded video quality of H.264/SVC (Scalable Video Coding) in the error prone transmission network, this paper proposes real-time feedback-based interactive error control methods suitable for low bit rate transmission. These methods make full use of the inter-layer prediction of spatial layers, improves the conventional feedback-based intra macro block (MB) update and references picture selection (RPS) error resilience techniques. The methods were tested using SVC common test conditions. Simulation results show that the average Y-PSNR of decoded pictures can achieve around 1.78dB gains using the best proposed method compared with the relative methods.

Abstract:The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error-resilient tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been pro- posed to protect the different parts in a MPEG-4 video packet (VP) with different channel coding rates based on the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes. However, it is still not powerful enough for the noisy channels. To provide more robust MPEG-4 video transmission, this paper proposes an improved unequal error protection (I-UEP) technique to protect the COD bits. Experimental results show that it is very effective and efficient.

Abstract:Expanding Window FEC is an emerging scheme for robust real-time video streaming over wireless networks, with low latency and reduction of error propagation. In this work, we focus on the problem of Expanding Window FEC redundancy allocation which has not been adequately addressed in current works. We first analyse the error probability of the adopted Expanding Window Reed-Solomon code (EW-RS), and introduce an equivalent error probability to simplify them. Then we are able to formulate the optimal redundancy allocation into a constrained nonlinear optimization problem, where by allocating the redundancy unequally considering the unequal importance of different frames and their dependency based on the expanding window, unequal error protection (UEP) is achieved and the overall distortion is minimized. Moreover, to reduce the computation complexity, a high-efficiency hill-climbing algorithm is developed to obtain the suboptimal allocation. At last, the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the proposed allocation scheme and solution algorithm.

Abstract:We propose a novel image watermarking scheme capable of providing unequal protection levels to different regions in the image. In the scheme, we firstly divide the image into high protection region, low protection region and non-protection region, and then use unequal error protection (UEP) code to encode the bits generated by high and low protection regions simultaneously and form the watermark bits to embed in the non-protection region. On the receiver side, the extracted bits with UEP capability can recover the high protection region more correctly than the low protection region. © 2009 IEEE.
A Dynamic Transmission Method For Scalable Video With Unequal Error Protection

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dynamic transmission method for scalable video with unequal error protection (UEP). Forward error correction (FEC) is used in the UEP scheme. FEC codes, such as Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, are allocated to different layers of scalable video according to their importance. The UEP scheme is applied on each group of pictures (GOP) with taking account of the data size fluctuation of GOPs. The proposed method dynamically adjusts the number of packets according to the source data size of each GOP in order to achieve similar channel code rates for different GOPs. Meanwhile, the buffer management is also considered to limit transmission delay on the sender side. Simulation results show that the proposed method can make significant improvement of average PSNR of reconstructed video in a wide range of channel coding rate and packet loss rate compared with the conventional UEP scheme.

Abstract:Scalable video delivery over wireless link is a very challenging task due to the time-varying characteristics of wireless channels. This paper proposes a channel-adaptive error control scheme for efficiently video delivery, which consists of dynamically channel estimation and channel- adaptive Unequal Error Protection (UEP). In our proposed channel-adaptive UEP scheme, a bit allocation algorithm is presented to periodically allocate the available bits among different video layers based on varying channel conditions so as to minimize the end-to-end distortion. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme is efficient under various channel conditions.
An Adaptive Unequal Error Protection Scheme Based on H.264/AVC Video Stream

Abstract:According to the data partitioning of the H.264 video compression standard, an adaptive Unequal Error Protection (UEP) scheme is proposed in this paper. This scheme can adjust the channel rate for each partition of the H.264 video stream adaptively, according to the feedback information of the channel state and the decoded video frames. Experiments show that this scheme can improve the error robustness of the video stream effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel unequal error protection (UEP) video transmission scheme based on dynamic resource allocation in a MIMO-OFDM system in order to improve the video transmission performance over wideband wireless channels. In this new scheme, a low density parity code (LDPC) is combined with a complexity reduced power reallocation algorithm to utilize the excess powers which margin from the powers necessary to meet the modulation level selected under a certain BER constraint. Furthermore, by taking full advantage of the residual excess powers, unequal error protection on important bits of video streams is provided by the LDPC code. Accordingly, the transmission efficiency and quality are both increased. Simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme may achieve great improvement in both systems with or without perfect channel estimation.

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel scheme, based on progressive fountain codes, for broadcasting JPEG 2000 multimedia. In such a broadcast scheme, progressive resolution levels of images/video have been unequally protected when transmitted using the proposed progressive fountain codes. With progressive fountain codes applied in the broadcast scheme, the resolutions of images (JPEG 2000) or videos (MJPEG 2000) received by different users can be automatically adaptive to their channel qualities, i.e. the users with good channel qualities are possible to receive the high resolution images/vedio while the users with bad channel qualities may receive low resolution images/vedio. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated with the MJPEG 2000 broadcast prototype.

Abstract:With the emerging of the third generation (3G) wireless technology, digital media, like image and video, over wireless channel becomes more and more demanding. In this paper, the measure metrics for the wireless image is proposed and a Qos-guarantee error control is presented, combining UEP with Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), aiming to high quality image transmission with short delay and little energy. Simulation results show that our scheme can achieve good reconstructed image with few retransmission times and small bit budget under different channel conditions, which can reduce the energy consumed in the network interface.

Abstract:Transmission of compressed video over error-prone channels may result in packet losses or errors, which can significantly degrade the image quality. Such degradation becomes even worse in 1Seg video broadcasting, which is widely used in Japan and Brazil for mobile phone TV services recently, where errors are drastically increased and the lost areas are contiguous. Therefore, the errors in the earlier concealed MBs (macro blocks) may propagate to the MBs later to be concealed inside the same frame (spatial domain). The error concealment (EC) is used to recover the lost data by the redundancy in videos. Aiming at spatial error propagation (SEP) reduction, this paper proposes an SEP-reduction-based EC (SEPEC). In SEPEC, besides the mismatch distortion in the current MB, the potential propagated mismatch distortion in the following to be concealed MBs is also minimized. Also, two extensions of SEPEC, i.e. SEPEC with refined search and SEPEC with multiple layer match, are discussed. Compared with previous work, the experiments show SEPEC achieves much better performance of video recovery and excellent trade-off between quality and computation in 1Seg broadcasting. Abstract:In order to improve the video transmission performance in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system, an unequal error protection (UEP) transmission scheme based on coded adaptive modulation is proposed in this paper. Specifically, the excess power which is wasted in normal adaptive modulation schemes is utilized to transmit important bits of the video source. Furthermore, a low density parity code (LDPC) is applied to the important bits to provide unequal error protection. Accordingly, the transmission efficiency and quality are both increased. Simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme may achieve great improvement in PSNR comparing to a normal adaptive modulation scheme.

Abstract:H.264/AVC scalable video coding (SVC) is an up-to-date video compression standard. This paper deals with the issue of transmitting H.264 scalable video bitstreams over wireless fading channels. The contribution is twofold: Firstly, to exploit the importance of prioritized video packets in different temporal layer, quality layer and group of pictures (GOP), a simple and accurate performance metric, namely, layer-GOP-weighted expected zone of error propagation (LGW-EZEP) model is proposed. Secondly, a joint power control and forward error correction (FEC) unequal error protection (UEP) scheme is proposed to transmit the video streams over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems efficiently and robustly. Meanwhile, a new iterative algorithm is given to solve the joint optimization problem. Compared to other independent power control or FEC UEP schemes, the combined protecting scheme demonstrates stronger robustness and flexibility via various fading channels.
