Abstract:Reduction is the important objective of rough set theory. The goal is to get excellent rule sets. The paper describes many metrics of decision rules, analyzes the properties for these metrics. Then it presents the metrics for rule set, which shows the properties of a rule set in general. All of them play an important role for decision of redundant knowledge.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an application of rough set methods for rule generation, which includes two steps. Attribute reduction is done first, which reduces the number of unnecessary attributes for the whole decision table. In this process, the relative subdivision distance is proposed as the heuristic information of algorithm REDA. The completeness and the correctness of REDA are also proven from the theoretical analysis. Value reduction is performed afterwards, which reduces the number of redundant attributes for every object. In this process, properties of attribute values of three classes are analyzed and the maximum number of condition attribute values is removed without losing essential information according to their properties. We then can get the optimal decision rules. Experimental results from applying the rough set approach to the set of data samples are given and evaluated to show efficient and effective of our algorithm.

Abstract:Based on rough set theory, the lower and upper approximations are redefined according to a new more general definition using the similarity relation. A general method for defining similarity relations on objects described by a set of attributes is given. An example shows that the decision rules induced from similarity-based lower approximation of decision classes are more robust than those induced from indiscernibility-based lower approximations.

Abstract:Knowledge reduction is one of the most important research issues in decision-theoretic rough set model. This paper first defines a new attribute measure for a reduct preserving boundary region partition, then constructs a connection degree to evaluate the different candidate reducts, and finally proposes a knowledge reduction algorithm for decision-theoretic rough set model. Example analysis shows that this algorithm is valid.

Abstract:Decision-theoretic rough set is a quite useful rough set by introducing the decision cost into probabilistic approximations of the target. However, Yao's decision-theoretic rough set is based on the classical indiscernibility relation; such a relation may be too strict in many applications. To solve this problem, a δ-cut decision-theoretic rough set is proposed, which is based on the δ-cut quantitative indiscernibility relation. Furthermore, with respect to criterions of decision-monotonicity and cost decreasing, two different algorithms are designed to compute reducts, respectively. The comparisons between these two algorithms show us the following: (1) with respect to the original data set, the reducts based on decision-monotonicity criterion can generate more rules supported by the lower approximation region and less rules supported by the boundary region, and it follows that the uncertainty which comes from boundary region can be decreased; (2) with respect to the reducts based on decision-monotonicity criterion, the reducts based on cost minimum criterion can obtain the lowest decision costs and the largest approximation qualities. This study suggests potential application areas and new research trends concerning rough set theory.

Abstract:Attribute reduction is one of the important research issues in rough set theory. In classical Pawlak rough set, the lower and upper approximations are monotonic with respect to the set inclusion of attributes. However,in decision-theoretic rough set model,the lower and upper approximations may increase or decrease with respect to the increasing of attributes. To address this issue,from the viewpoint of optimization,fitness functions of the decision-monotonicity criteri-on,generality criterion and cost criterion have been proposed respectively. Genetic algorithm is also applied to compute reducts. The experimental results show that:the reducts based on decision-monotonicity criterion can generate more posi-tive rules;the reducts based on generality criterion can generate most positive rules;the reducts based on cost criterion can obtain lowest decision costs.

Abstract:Many attribute reduction methods have been proposed for decision-theoretic rough set model based on different definitions of attribute reduct, while an attribute reduct can be seen as an attribute subset that satisfies specific criteria. Most reducts are defined on the basis of a single criterion, which may result in the difficulty for users to choose appropriate reduct to design related reduction algorithm. To address this problem, we propose a multi-objective attribute reduction method based on NSGA-II for decision-theoretic rough set model. Three different definitions of attribute reduct based on positive region, decision cost and mutual information are considered and transferred to a multi-objective optimization problem. Experimental results show that the multi-objective reduction method can obtain a robust and better classification performance.

Abstract:Being an important topic of the knowledge reduction of rough set, the reduction of the decision rules respectively eliminates the redundant attribute values of each decision rule based on rough logic. The definition of the binary discernibility matrix in the incomplete decision system was given by analyzing all kinds of definitions of the binary discernibility matrix. An algorithm for decision rules reduction in incomplete information system was designed based on binary discernibility matrix. This algorithm is suitable for both compatible and incompatible decision table. The correctness of the proposed algorithm was proved by examples and the efficiency was indicated by empirical analysis and applications.

Abstract:The essential issue of rules reduction for information system with real value attributes is to discretize these attributes. In this paper, a new approach of rules reduction for real value information system is presented via rough sets theory and the concept of fuzzy sets' similarity is introduced into the process of rules reduction. The rules reduction degree lies on the similarity of fuzzy sets during the reduction process. Experimental results derived from IRIS database show the approach is effective for rules reduction of real value information system.

Abstract:In the process of constructing a decision tree, the criteria of selecting partitional attributes will influence the efficiency of classification. We presented weighted mean roughness, a new concept based on rough sets theory which is regarded as the criteria for choosing attributes. The experiments show that, compared with the entropy-based method, our method is simpler in the structure, and can improve the efficiency of classification.

Abstract:Attribute reduction is an important topic in Decision-Theoretic Rough Set theory. To overcome the limitations of lower-approximation-monotonicity based reduct and cost minimum based reduct, a moderate attribute reduction approach is proposed in this paper, which combines the lower approximation monotonicity criterion and cost minor criterion. Furthermore, the proposed attribute reduct is searched by solving an optimization problem, and a fusion fitness function is proposed in a generic algorithm, such that the reduct is computed in a low time complexity. Experimental analysis is included to validate the theoretic analysis and quantify the effectiveness of the proposed attribute reduction algorithm. This study indicates that the optimality is not the best and sub-optimum may be the best choice.

Abstract:This paper proposed a multi-criteria decision making approach based on extended rough set. The approach combines both rough set theory (RST) model based on dominance relation and variable precision rough set (VPRS) model, and the minimum confidence of rule acts as the variable parameter in VPRS model. First, a pairwise comparison table (PCT) is constructed from original decision table. Then, decision rules are mined from PCT by decision tree technology according to the combined model. Finally, a score function is defined to sort new alternatives and the optical one is selected. Feasibility of the approach is demonstrated by a simple illustrative example.

Abstract:Based on rough set theory and method, an algorithm for discovering personalized decision rules is designed in order to find the rules which users really want. The expounded algorithm consists of two steps. First, the attributes with less interest of user are eliminated as possible during reduction of attributes, and in this way the best reduct can be found. Secondly, during reduction of attribute values, some irrelevant attributes are further eliminated, then abstractation of personalized decision rules is accomplished. The algorithm is proved efficient in theory, and the results of experiment show the feasibility of this algorithm.

Abstract:One important and valuable topic in fuzzy rough sets is attribute reduction of decision system. The existing attribute reductions with fuzzy rough sets consider all decision classes together and cannot identify key conditional attributes explicitly for special decision class. In this paper we introduce the concept of local reduction with fuzzy rough sets for decision system. The local reduction can identify key conditional attribute and offer a minimal description for every single decision class. Approach of discernibility matrix is employed to investigate the structure of local reduction. At last, several experiments are performed to show that the idea of local reduction is feasible and valid.

Abstract:The degree of subdivision of the decision attribute value influences upon the accuracy of approximation classification, the approximation quality of rules, the core attributes and the information entropy in decision systems based on rough set theory. The finer the decision attribute discretization of a decision table is, the less the accuracy of approximation classification, the approximation quality of rules, and information entropy are on any condition attribute set. Meanwhile, if the attribute values of decision attributes are divided into finer values, then the core attributes set obtained from the finer decision table must include the core attributes set obtained from the previous decision table. These conclusions are proved theoretically. So the discrete degree of decision attributes should be chosen properly. The research is helpful to attribute reduction and enhancing confidences of decision rules.

Abstract:In this paper we present a method of fuzzy multi-attribute decision-making based on rough sets. The uniqueness, as well as the crucial part, is that we define rough sets under priority relationship. We also establish priority class using priority relationship R-angle as the categorization criteria. Then, we study the mathematical properities of the concepts, define the priority degree between, two objects, and define the summary priority degree as well, by using inclusion degree-priority degree measurement. Using summarization method, we can get the evaluation value for a given object and thus study the multi-attribute decision making. Finally, we present the decision-making example given an attribute as interval number and suggest decision-making steps by using the method of rough sets, which helps give us an insight into the method of fuzzy multi-attribute decision-making based on rough sets.

Abstract:Rough set theory is a theoretical tool for complete conclusions by incomplete information; its basic idea is using some partition to consider the description problem of concept on university. In this paper, we firstly introduce some usual attribute reduction methods. Secondly, we establish an effect-based roughness measure model, named as effect rough degree (ERD) by combining with a basic measure factor for roughness-lower (upper) accuracy of rough set. Finally, we propose an ERD-based attribute reduction method (abbreviated as ERD-RM) and then discuss the difference and relation between ERD-RM and the existing reduction methods. The theoretical analysis showed that the ERD-RM includes other reduction methods to a certain degree, and it also has basic difference with other existing methods.
