Abstract:In his talk at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1982, Brockett proposed to classify all finite-dimensional estimation algebras arising in nonlinear filters. Recently, Chen, Yau, and Leung [ SIAM J. Control Optim., 35 (1997), pp. 1132--1141] claimed that they had classified all finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank when the dimension of the state-space is less than or equal to four. In this paper, we introduce a series of completely new computations about the estimation algebra, and we find two sets of new equations about the $\Omega$-matrix. As a consequence, we can prove, without any dimension assumption on the state-space, that the $\Omega$-matrix is a constant matrix, and thus we succeed in classifying all finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank with the state-space dimension being arbitrary.

Abstract:The idea of using estimation algebras to construct finite- dimensional nonlinear filters was first proposed by Brockett and Mitter independently. It turns out that the concept of estimation algebra plays a crucial role in the investigation of finite-dimensional nonlinear filters. In his talk at the International Congress of Mathematics in 1983, Brockett proposed classifying all finite-dimensional estimation algebras. In this paper, all finite-dimensional algebras with maximal rank are classified if the dimension of the state space is less than or equal to two. Therefore, from the Lie algebraic point of view, all finite-dimensional filters are understood generically in the case where the dimension of state space is less than three.

Abstract:The idea of using estimation algebras to construct finite-dimensional non-linear filters was first proposed by Brockett and Clark, and Mitter independently. In his famous talk at the International Congress of Mathematics in 1983, Brockett proposed to classify all finite-dimensional estimation algebras. In this paper we explain why the theory of estimation algebras plays an important role in non-linear filtering. We show how to use the Wei-Norman approach to construct finite-dimensional filters from finite-dimensional estimation algebras. We survey some results in estimation algebras after 1984. We give a self-contained proof of complete classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank in one place. The proof given here is simpler than those proofs scattered in several papers. This provides the readers with a complete coherent view of the important topic of the classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebras.

Abstract:Ever since the Lie algebra method was introduced to construct finite dimensional nonlinear filters by Brockett and Mitter independently, there has been an intense interest in classifying all finite dimensional estimation algebras and finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. The estimation algebra method has been proven to be an invaluable tool in the nonlinear filtering theory. This article considers the finite dimensional estimation algebras derived from a nonlinear filtering system with state dimension n, linear rank n-1, and constant Wong matrix. Related theories of the underdetermined partial differential equations and the Euler operator are applied to classify the estimation algebras. It is proved that the Mitter conjecture holds and the dimension of the finite dimensional estimation algebras must be 2n or 2n+1 with the abovementioned conditions. Therefore, we can construct the explicit solution of filtering systems by Wei-Norman approach. This result is of great significance because it is the first classification of nonmaximal rank finite dimensional estimation algebras with arbitrary state dimension.

Abstract:All finite-dimensional estimation algebras with maximal rank can be classified if the dimension of the state space is at most two. A theorem is given which is characterized as the most important step towards the complete solution of the Brockett problem. The major difference between this theorem and the corresponding theorem of L.F. Tam et al. (1990) is that the exactness assumption in the theorem of Tam et al. has been removed. The novelty of the problem is that there is no assumption on the drift term of the nonlinear filtering system. However, in the course of the proof of the theorem, it is shown that the drift term cannot be very arbitrary if the estimation algebra is finite dimensional. In fact, it is shown that the drift term must be linear vector field plus gradient vector field

Abstract:The Kalman-Bucy filter is widely used in modern industry. Despite its usefulness, however, the Kalman-Bucy filter is not perfect. One of the weakness is that it needs a Gaussian assumption for the initial data. The other weakness is that it requires the drift term f(x) be a linear function. Brockett (1981), Brockett and Clark (1980), and Mitter (1979) proposed independently using a Lie algebraic method to solve the Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation for nonlinear filtering. This method requires only n sufficient statistics, where n is the state space dimension, and it allows the initial condition to be modeled by an arbitrary distribution. The idea was worked out in detail by Tam, Wong, and Yau (1990) and Yau (1990, 1994). However, in the Lie algebraic method, one has to know explicitly the structure of the estimation algebra. In 1983, Brockett proposed to classify all finite dimensional filters. It has been proven to be an invaluable tool in the study of nonlinear filtering problem. For all known finite dimensional estimation algebras, the Wong's Ω-matrix has been proven to be a constant matrix. However, the Wong's Ω-matrix is shown not necessary to be a constant matrix in this letter when we consider finite dimensional estimation algebras with state dimension 3 and rank equal to 1. Several easily satisfied conditions are established for an estimation algebra of a special class of filtering systems to be finite-dimensional. Finally, we give the construction of finite dimensional filters of non-maximal rank.

Abstract:In the late seventies, the concept of the estimation algebra of a filtering system was introduced. It was proven to be an invaluable tool in the study of non-linear filtering problems. In the early eighties, Brockett proposed to classify finite dimensional estimation algebras and Mitter conjectured that all functions in finite dimensional estimation algebras are necessarily polynomials of total degree at most one. Despite the massive effort in understanding the finite dimensional estimation algebras, the 20 year old problem of Brockett and Mitter conjecture remains open. In this paper, we give a classification of finite dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank and solve the Mitter conjecture affirmatively for finite dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank. In particular, for an estimation algebra E of maximal rank, we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for E to be finite dimensional in terms of the drift fi (x) and observation hj (x). As an important corollary, we show that the number of statistics needed to compute the conditional density of the state given the observation {y(s):0 ≤ s ≤ t} by the algebraic method is n where n is the dimension of the state.

Abstract:Ever since the technique of Kalman-Bucy filter was popularized, due to its limitations of linear assumption and Gaussian initial condition in model, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. The idea of using estimation algebra was first proposed to construct finite-dimensional nonlinear filters by Brockett and Mitter independently in the late seventies, and it has rapidly been proven to be an invaluable tool in the study of nonlinear filtering (NLF) problem. For all known finite dimensional estimation algebras (FDEAs), the Wong's matrix has to be constant. However, as shown in this paper, the Wong's matrix is a polynomial when we consider FDEAs with state dimension 4 and linear rank equal to 2. Several mild conditions are established for finding a special class of NLF system. Finally, we give the construction of finite dimensional filters for this class of NLF system by Wei-Norman approach.

Abstract:Ever since the Kalman filter technique was popularized, there has been an abundance of interest in finding new classes of finite dimensional recursive filters. In this paper, by applying Wong's theorem [W. S. Wong, Systems Control Lett, 9 (1987), pp. 79-83], we construct a new class of finite dimensional filters with arbitrary state space dimension n and linear rank n - 2. Importantly, we show that in the new class of nonlinear filtering systems, the entries of Wong's Omega-matrix need not be constants or polynomials and can be C-infinity functions.

Abstract:Ever since Brockett, Clark and Mitter introduced the estimation algebra method, it becomes a powerful tool to classify the finite-dimensional filtering system. In this paper, we investigate finite-dimensional estimation algebra with non-maximal rank. The structure of Wong matrix omega will be focused on since it plays a critical role in the classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebras. In this paper, we first consider general estimation algebra with non-maximal rank and determine the linear structure of the submatrix of omega by using rank condition and property of Euler operator. In the second part, we proceed to consider the case of linear rank n-1 and prove the linear structure of omega. Finally, we give the structure of finite-dimensional filters which implies the drift term must be a quadratic function plus a gradient of a smooth function.

Abstract:The estimation algebra plays an important role in classification of finite dimensional filters. When finite dimensional estimation algebra has maximal rank, Yau et al. [Yau (2003). Complete classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank. International Journal of Control, 76(7), 657-677; Yau & Hu (2005). Classification of finite-dimensional estimation algebras of maximal rank with arbitrary state-space dimension and Mitter conjecture. International Journal of Control, 78(10), 689-705.] have proved that eta must be a degree 2 polynomial. In this paper, we study the structure of finite dimensional exact estimation algebra with state dimension 3 and rank 2. We establish a sufficient and necessary condition for estimation algebra with nonmaximal rank to be finite dimensional. Importantly, in the new filtering system, eta needs not to be a degree 2 polynomial and can be of any degree 4n(1) +2, n(1) is an element of Z(+). It is the first time to systematically analyse nonmaximal rank exact estimation algebra in which eta is a polynomial of any degree 4n(1) + 2,n(1) is an element of Z(+). For Riccati-type equation, estimates have been done from the viewpoints of both classical solution and weak solution respectively. Finally, finite dimensional filters of Benes type are constructed successfully.
