Abstract:As a non‐contact temperature distribution measurement method, infrared thermography (IRT) has emerged as an indispensable tool in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of electrical equipment based on the absolute and relative temperature values. Manual fault inspection, as an expert‐experiences based evaluation method, has formed a mature technical scheme with a large number of application cases. However, the efficiency and accuracy of manual fault inspection are being challenged by the rapid growth in the number of equipment in power grid. The situation is improving with the advanced of image processing technique. Machine‐assisted fault diagnosis provides a novel method to assist human beings to complete fault diagnosis under the intervention of human prior knowledge. However, the limitations of infrared images bring challenges to image analysis processing especially target detection. In pursuit of automatic fault diagnosis, deep learning algorithms are introduced to achieve target detection in the complex environment. This study reviews the development of IRT‐based diagnostics beginning with the general procedures, objects, and limitations of IRT‐based fault inspection, and then gives an insight into the popular machine‐assisted fault diagnosis as well as image‐based intelligent fault identification. In addition, the future recommendations of IRT are also provided from construction of intelligent infrared detection system, establishment of an open and shared infrared image database and comprehensive utilization of joint visualization diagnosis technology.

Abstract:With the continuous development of infrared technology, infrared-based detection and diagnosis technology has become a new modern power equipment detection technology. Based on infrared technology, this paper proposed detection and diagnosis method of the transmission line porcelain insulators, including analysis on detection theory of IR imaging sensor, and infrared imaging map introduction. Through establishing porcelain insulator circuit calculation model, computing heating power of trouble insulators, this paper minutely analyzed the heating causes of trouble insulators. The paper provided a reference to the detection of transmission line porcelain insulators, which made it an important measure to ensure the safety and economic operation of electrical equipment.

Abstract:For the fault diagnosis problem of complex printed circuit board whose working principle is unknown, a general fault diagnosis algorithm based on infrared image processing is presented. By introducing the concept "generalized distance" to compare infrared images in different working conditions and locate the fault area on the printed circuit board rapidly. The algorithm is simple, real-time and generalized. The result of the experiment shows the validity of this algorithm.

Abstract:At present, rotating machinery is widely used in all walks of life and has become the key equipment in many production processes. It is of great significance to strengthen the condition monitoring of rotating machinery, timely diagnose and eliminate faults to ensure the safe and efficient operation of rotating machinery and improve the economic benefits of enterprises. When the state of a rotating machine deteriorates, the thermal energy that is much more than its normal operation will be generated due to the increase in the friction between the components or other factors. Therefore, using the infrared thermal camera to collect the infrared thermal images of rotating machinery and judge the health status of rotating machinery by observing the temperature distribution in the thermal images is often more rapid and effective than other technologies. Nevertheless, after decades of development, the research achievements of infrared thermography (IRT) and its application in various industrial fields are numerous and complex, and there is a lack of systematic sorting and summary of the achievements in this field. Accordingly, this paper summarizes the development and application of IRT as a non-contact and non-invasive tool for equipment condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, and introduces the basic theory of IRT, image processing technology and fault diagnosis methods of rotating machinery in detail. Finally, the review is summarized and some future potential topics are proposed, which will make the subject easier for beginners and non-experts to understand.

Abstract:The electrical equipment of intelligent substation cannot deal with the problem of load mutation, and the load adjustment is not timely, which leads to the poor performance of thermal fault identification of electrical equipment. Therefore, a study on thermal fault identification of the electrical equipment of intelligent substation based on infrared technology is proposed. First, under the background of infrared technology, according to the thermal fault feature extraction model of substation electrical equipment, the principle of double station cross location is proposed; combined with the sampling results of thermal fault characteristic parameters of electrical equipment in intelligent substation, the thermal fault characteristics are analyzed; through the process of thermal fault identification of electrical equipment in intelligent substation, the preliminary classification structure of thermal fault is obtained and the thermal fault identification is completed. The experimental results show that the designed method has good performance of thermal fault identification, high output stability, better identification effect after optimization, and highly sensitive identification ability.

Abstract:As the need to discover abnormal temperature rise and overheating breakdown of power equipment in substations is urgent, infrared inspection is important for its quick and accurate characteristics. To improve the accuracy of infrared inspection diagnosis, this paper proposes an operational diagnosis system based on comprehensive analysis of infrared images of power equipment. Firstly, the image is preprocessed by histogram equalization, Sobel operator, Canny operator, median filtering, etc. Then, the feature points of the infrared image are extracted by SIFT algorithm, and the extracted feature points are K-means clustered. Find the type of feature points that belong to the capacitive device after clustering, and then perform SIFT feature extraction on the processed image, and eliminate the feature points that are not electrical devices according to the found feature points, thereby completing the target —— Identification of the electrical device. Finally, the target recognition results of the 3 pretreatment methods and the original without pretreatment are compared to find the best effect, that is, the pre-processing algorithm with the highest recognition accuracy.

Abstract:With the advancement of social economy, electricity has gradually entered thousands of households and become a commonly used energy source. However, it cannot be ignored that electricity is dangerous in itself and should be used rationally and effectively. The fault detection of power equipment has become a top priority because they are essential tools for storing, transmitting, and transferring electric power. Based on infrared imaging technology, the principle of infrared imaging technology is introduced in this paper, and effective diagnosis methods are analyzed and summarized in detail. The effectiveness of the proposed infrared image segmentation algorithm is verified through the practical application of the infrared image segmentation algorithm in the detection of interior and exterior faults of electrical equipment.

So the fault diagnosis models for these equipments are also different. Based on the power electronics, fault diagnosis and network technology, a distributed system with remote fault diagnosis function and high compatibility is presented in the paper. It puts emphasis on introducing the system structure, real-time and synchronous data acquisition method, on-line and off-line fault diagnosis, as well as compatibility design for power electronic equipments.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, infrared sensor technology is applied to the monitoring of electrical equipment, and a mathematical model of infrared image processing is built. In addition, the infrared image recognition model of electrical equipment is combined with the improved CenterNet, and ResNeXt50, which has stronger feature extraction capability, is used as the backbone network of CenterNet to improve detection accuracy. An infrared dataset of electrical equipment is used to verify the effectiveness of the improved CenterNet model and the other two models. Finally, the faults in substation equipment are analyzed and studied for real cases applied in practical work as an example. The results show that the algorithm in this paper has an mAP value of 93.7% and a frame rate of 40/S, which can balance the detection accuracy and detection speed in the electrical equipment infrared scene. Compared to traditional electrical equipment detection methods, the detection method of infrared sensor imaging is more reliable, with a 90% accuracy rate, and the highest has reached 100%. The article analyzes the characteristics and relationship between the local heating and temperature increase of the fault point of the equipment concerned, summarizes the fault judgment method, and verifies the effectiveness of infrared sensor imaging technology.

Abstract:Thermal diagnosis based on infrared photos taken by robots is a low-cost measure with promising results in the defect detection of power apparatus. To reduce the work of human investigation on those photos, this paper provides an automatic program by means of image segmentation and template recognition. First, the original RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color of the pixels in thermal images are transformed into the Lab (Luminosity, color vectors a & b) space. Then, we carry out K-means clustering in Lab space, divide the image into K classes, remove the class that represents the background value of the image, and get the image without background. Later, NCC (Normalized Cross Correlation) grayscale matching algorithm is used to find out the location of the device. Finally, the processed images are clustered again by K-means, and the results are divided into different layers, and the variances of L, a, b in Lab are calculated. Fault diagnosis is done by comparing the variance of different levels. The example shows that when the original image is divided into 4 layers, the background can be removed well, and when the number of layers is increased, the corresponding variance of the corresponding variance is significantly reduced to show that the equipment has overheating fault.

Abstract:An intelligent infrared detection system for power equipment based on＂Internet +＂was presented in this paper so as to raise the on－line detection efficiency of electrical equipment and timely diagnose equipment operational status for fault location.Based on an intelligent hardware platform with infrared thermal imaging function,the proposed system in combination with PMS (production management system),using an Android system for control purpose,could perform such functions as recognition of static equipment information,adjustment of peripheral sensors,infrared image reading,data processing and display,automatic filling of numerical tables as well as intelligent status diagnosis.Experiments verified that the proposed system could generate quite accurate infrared images,complete intelligent equipment status diagnosis according to detection information,realize information exchange,and automatically generate test reports with quite accurate results.The proposed approach could provide guarantee for steady operation of electrical equipment.

Abstract:Infrared thermography has been used as a key means for the identification of overheating defects in power cable accessories. At present, analysis of thermal imaging pictures relies on human visual inspections, which is time-consuming and laborious and requires engineering expertise. In order to realize intelligent, autonomous recognition of infrared images taken from electrical equipment, previous studies reported preliminary work in preprocessing of infrared images and in the extraction of key feature parameters, which were then used to train neural networks. However, the key features required manual selection, and previous reports showed no practical implementations. In this contribution, an autonomous diagnosis method, which is based on the Faster RCNN network and the Mean-Shift algorithm, is proposed. Firstly, the Faster RCNN network is trained to implement the autonomous identification and positioning of the objects to be diagnosed in the infrared images. Then, the Mean-Shift algorithm is used for image segmentation to extract the area of overheating. Next, the parameters determining the temperature of the overheating parts of cable accessories are calculated, based on which the diagnosis are then made by following the relevant cable condition assessment criteria. Case studies are carried out in the paper, and results show that the cable accessories and their overheating regions can be located and assessed at different camera angles and under various background conditions via the autonomous processing and diagnosis methods proposed in the paper.

Abstract:Heat is one of the most typical phenomena of malfunctioning power apparatus.The infrared temperature measurement technology can be used to diagnose the early defects of the equipments in substations.Recently,the technology was widely applied in Xiaogan Power Supply Company for condition-based maintenance of the power apparatus,and it was proved to be effective because lots of serious equipment defects had been found.The detailed measure dealing with one of the defects,that the 220 kV metal oxide arresters(MOA) was found to be abnormal from Infrared temperature measurement,was introduced in this paper.The live detection, off-line experiment and disassembling inspection on the MOA showed that the infrared temperature measurement technologv and ohmic current measurement could be used to detect the moistening defect of the MOA instantly and accurately.This will improve the reliability of the MOA in operation.

Abstract:: Rotating machines are the crucial components of any industrial firm. The abrupt malfunctioning of such machines doesn’t merely affect the process downtime moreover it leads to production loss. Therefore to minimize the operation and maintenance costs, early detection of faults is very essential. As of late infrared thermography (IRT) has picked up consideration amongst the non-destructive condition monitoring techniques for early fault diagnosis of rotating machines. IRT is one of the contactless and non-invasive condition monitoring (CM) tool with very high accuracy and reliability. Real-time temperature measurement is done in a non-contact manner with this technique. IRT has discovered its applications in paper, aerospace, nuclear, wood, plastic, and various other industries. This paper presents a state of art review describing the fundamentals of IRT, diverse induction motor (IM) faults, and their diagnosis. The paper summarizes some of the machine learning methods such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and support vector machine for the detection of bearing faults. Additionally, some deep learning methods have been discussed in this paper due to their superiority over machine learning methods in terms of feature extraction as well as their selection. Also, the future scope has been proposed for developing a complete and self-learning package for fault diagnosis, and prognosis.

This paper is studied the online full field of infrared temperature measurement technology,and analyzed real-time image of high voltage equipment by machine type high speed infrared temperature scanner and analysis software,and realized the accurate location and detection of surface temperature of high voltage equipment,thereby improve the efficiency of the inspection work and prevente the damage of high voltage equipment.

Abstract:Abstract The application of computer vision continues to widen with advancement in technology. Imaging systems which provide necessary inputs to the computer-vision-based models can come in various ways. Such as X-ray images, Computed Tomography (CT) scan images, and Infrared (IR) images. This paper is a review of different application areas of infrared thermography (IRT) for monitoring the status of electrical power equipment. It summarizes in tabular form recent research and relevant works within the field of condition monitoring of power assets. A general review of the application of IRT in power devices was undertaken before a specific review of selected works based on IRT for important electrical power equipment with a tabular review of possible causes of hotspots using photovoltaic installation as a reference. Results of previous works were presented with highlights on performance metrics used and accuracies achieved. Emphasis where made on the future potential of IRT and some associated techniques. The work saw that heat production within systems during operation is an important characteristic that enables IRT to become applicable for monitoring diverse physical systems, most importantly power systems. The high cost of high-definition, and long-range IR cameras limits the wide adoption of the technology for its potential applications for monitoring power installations. The work recommends future research in the development of affordable IR imaging systems with advanced features for condition monitoring of physical systems such as power installations.

Abstract:Infrared thermal imaging technology plays an important role in evaluating the operating condition of electrical equipment. This article focuses on two critical environmental factors, namely, wind speed and ambient temperature. They interfere with infrared detection and fault diagnosis by affecting the actual temperature of the fault area. In this article, we use the principle of heat transfer to explore the affected conditions and the changing laws of diagnostic indicators. We provide a solution for diagnosing the live equipment fault area after compensating for the infrared temperature. Both the simulation and experimental results show that the method can obtain the temperature of the equipment fault area under different environmental conditions for different electrical equipment failures when they meet the temperature compensation conditions. The method can eliminate the influences of wind speed and ambient temperature on the results of infrared temperature measurement and achieve a unified solution to the problem of multiple types of electrical equipment. This breaks through the barriers of infrared temperature measurement applications limited by the on-site environmental conditions. The proposed method can serve to further improve the existing evaluation standards. The results of the article are useful for troubleshooting equipment and improving the accuracy of the infrared diagnosis of live equipment.

Broad Learning System Based Visual Fault Diagnosis for Electrical Equipment Thermography Images

Abstract:The basic principle of fault diagnosis using infrared thermography is that the temperature of electrical equipment reveals its service condition. However, the crucial information is often masked by complex backgrounds. Besides, the thermal image sequence of electrical equipment in power systems usually reaches tens of thousands of frames, which also increases the difficulty of diagnosis. Moreover, previous work mostly focuses on temperature information of images at pixel-wise level. Here, the spatial-temporal properties of infrared image sequence is recognized for fault diagnosis. An automatic electrical equipment diagnosis strategy for preventive maintenance is proposed in this work, in which spatial-temporal properties of infrared image sequence including spatial thermography distribution and temporal temperature features have been considered. Temperature soft-sensing and target segmentation are first accomplished, which is the basis of subsequent comprehensive utilization of temperature information and image texture. Then features describes time-variation and spatial distribution are extracted from infrared image sequence. Here, the utilization of infrared image information is no longer restrained to pixel level or single detection time point. Finally, classification model is developed with broad learning system to determine whether equipment is under a normal operating state. The efficacy of the proposed method is verified through a power system application.

Abstract:Temperature is one of the most common indicators for the health of electrical equipment in the substation. By now, infrared thermography has been an important monitoring tool due to its real‐time temperature measurement and noncontact manner. However, at present, portable thermal imagers are usually used to collect and store the status image of single equipment at a certain time, which cannot continuously track the condition of the equipment and the efficiency is very low. In order to solve this problem, our team proposed a method for online condition of electrical equipment based on the visualization and processing of infrared image temperature data. We developed video inspection software, equipped with an infrared camera for automatic inspection to obtain infrared images. After that, the target equipment in a whole image are automatically extracted based on the reference image and the equipment type of each target is classified. Then, in order to visualize temperature data and extract temperature information for different types of equipment, the concepts of heating spot, heating section, and heating area are defined. Finally, diagnosis rules based on relevant related thermal fault diagnosis standards and past experience are proposed to evaluate the condition of each target equipment, using the temperature rise and heat generation percentage. The method has been applied in a real substation and proved its effectiveness. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by Wiley Periodicals LLC.
