Abstract: This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussion presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:The classical Doppler effect has already been studied in many textbooks and papers. However, the formula currently used to describe the Doppler effect for a source and a receiver moving with constant velocities is not suitable for practical applications. Indeed, the formula makes use of two angles that depend on the state of the source-receiver system both at the emission instant and at the reception instant of sound, while in most real cases the state of the system is known only at one of the two instants. In this paper, two equivalent formulas are derived for the Doppler shift: one depending solely on the state of the system at the emission instant, and one depending solely on the state of the system at the reception instant. The paper also provides two more general expressions that describe the Doppler shift evolution over time. The expressions derived in this paper are compared with the existing ones in some special cases, obtaining consistent results.

Abstract:In this paper, we will derive the general equations for Doppler effect. It will be proved that regardless of the nature of the emitted waves and the medium through which the waves propagate the formula always has the same form and is identical to the general Doppler effect formula for sound. We will also show that Doppler effect can be used to establish a relationship between the local time of the source and the local time of the receiver. In addition, some new characteristics of the Doppler effect have been presented that have not been discussed in the literature so far.

Abstract:A numerical approach to acquire the transient responses of a target subject to arbitrary motion for analysis of micro-Doppler effects is developed. Transforms of coordinates and fields between a stationary laboratory reference and the moving target reference are formulated in terms of relativity. Two examples are provided: one is for a target in motion of translating plus coning, and the other is in motion of translating plus vibrating.

Abstract:The description of a Lorentz beam is directly obtained from Maxwell's equations. Based on the vector angular spectrum representation of Maxwell's equations and the method of stationary phase, the analytical TE and TM terms of the Lorentz beam have been presented in the far field. The TE term is located at the y axis, and the TM term the x axis. The light intensity distributions of the Lorentz beam and its TE and the TM terms are depicted in the far field reference plane. The influences of the inequality of the transverse beam waists on the light intensity distributions of the Lorentz beam, its TE and TM terms are also analyzed. Moreover, the vectorial structure of the Lorentz beam is compared with that of the Gaussian beam. Due to the relatively small diffraction effect, the beam spot of the Lorentz beam is smaller than that of the Gaussian beam. This research reveals the vectorial composition of the Lorentz beam.

Abstract:This article explores the differences between frame and coordinate transformations in relativistic theories. We highlight the key role of tetrad fields in connecting spacetime and frame indices. Using Maxwell's electrodynamics as an example, we show that Maxwell's equations are invariant under coordinate transformations but exhibit covariant behavior under frame transformations. We also analyze the energy-momentum of an electromagnetic field in different frames, providing deeper insights into the implications of different frames of reference and coordinate systems.

Abstract:Since their first introduction, Quantum Reference Frame (QRF) transformations have been extensively discussed, generalising the covariance of physical laws to the quantum domain. Despite important progress, a formulation of QRF transformations for Lorentz symmetry is still lacking. The present work aims to fill this gap. We first introduce a reformulation of relativistic quantum mechanics independent of any notion of preferred temporal slicing. Based on this, we define transformations that switch between the perspectives of different relativistic QRFs. We introduce a notion of ''quantum Lorentz transformations'' and ''superposition of Lorentz boosts'', acting on the external degrees of freedom of a quantum particle. We analyse two effects, superposition of time dilations and superposition of length contractions, that arise only if the reference frames exhibit both relativistic and quantum-mechanical features. Finally, we discuss how the effects could be observed by measuring the wave-packet extensions from relativistic QRFs.

Abstract:Introducing the primed inertial coordinate system, for each inertial frame of reference, in addition to the usual inertial coordinate system, we assume that gravity-free space and time possess the Euclidean structures in the primed inertial coordinate system and the generalized Finslerian structures in the usual inertial coordinate system. We combine these assumptions with two fundamental postulates, (i) the principle of relativity and (ii) the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames of reference, to derive the localized Lorentz transformation as a linear transformation between any two usual inertial coordinate systems. Based on this, it is proposed that all laws of physics are locally Lorentz-invariant in the usual inertial coordinate system. As a Lorentz-invariant law of physics must be locally Lorentz-invariant while a locally Lorentz-invariant law is not necessarily Lorentz-invariant, the change from the requirement of Lorentz invariance to that of the local Lorentz invariance on laws of physics provides with a larger acceptable scope to explore these laws.

Abstract:Lorentz transformation equations provide us a set of relations between the spacetime co-ordinates as observed from two different inertial frames. In case, one of the frames is moving with a uniform rectilinear we have Rindlers transformation equations under such a situation. In the present work we extend the Rindlers equations to a situation where we have in general non-uniform acceleration. First we consider the non-inertial frame to undergo simple harmonic motion (SHM) and as a second case we consider the non-inertial frame to move uniformly along a circle. This set of transformation equations will have applications in various branches of Physics and in general in Astrophysics.

Abstract:The rotational Doppler effect based on the radio orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying wave has been theoretically studied and experimentally verified at 10 GHz. By using the higher-order OAM mode L=2 and L=3 as the incident wave, the rotational Doppler frequency shift and the inevitable micro-Doppler frequency shift are successfully distinguished. Since the wave vector of radio OAM wave includes both the radial component and azimuthal component, which are related to linear Doppler frequency shift along the radial direction and rotational Doppler frequency shift, respectively, it has potential applications in 2D vector velocity detection.
The classical Doppler effect revisited by the mathematical description of the phase function

Abstract:This paper aims to shed some more light on one of the best known phenomena in the field of physics, the Doppler effect, in particular, on its classical version. Although, as mentioned, it is a phenomenon already described more than 150 years ago, the general case, even considering constant velocities, continues to be the subject of very recent bibliographical works which either show it incompletely or start from a not entirely accurate description of it. Here, general expressions of both frequency shift and aberration are obtained by geometrical description and, more interestingly, by describing the phase of the wave in the reference frame in which the propagating medium is at rest. The coherence between the two points of view permits to contrast the validity of the proposed results, and allows for a generalization of the resulting expressions for any reference frame, even those where the propagating medium is not still.

The theoretical formula for the Doppler shift in the left-handed material, which is described by Drude's dispersion model, is presented. This formula is examined by first-principles numerical experiments, which are in agreement with the theoretical results.

Abstract:The well-known linear Doppler effect arises from the linear motion between source and observer, while the less well-known rotational Doppler effect arises from the rotational motion. Here, we present both theories and experiments illustrating the relationship between the rotational and linear Doppler effects. A spiral phaseplate is used to generate a light beam carrying orbital angular momentum and the frequency shift is measured arising from its rotational and/or linear motion. By considering either the motion-induced time-evolving phase or the momentum and energy conservation in light-matter interactions, we derive the rotational Doppler shift, linear Doppler shift, and overall Doppler shift associated with rotational and linear motions. We demonstrate the relationship between rotational and linear Doppler shifts, either of which can be derived from the other effect, thereby illustrating their shared origin. Moreover, the close relationship between rotational and linear Doppler effects is also deduced for a more general moving rough surface.

Abstract:We consider three possible approaches to formulating coordinate transformations on position space associated with non-linear Lorentz transformations on momentum space. The first approach uses the definition of velocity and gives the standard Lorentz transformation. In the second method, we translate the behavior in momentum space into position space by means of Fourier transform. Under certain conditions, it also gives the standard Lorentz transformation on position space. The third approach investigates the covariance of the modified Klein-Gordon equation obtained from the dispersion relation.

Abstract:From the viewpoint of gauge gravitational theories, the path dependent gravitational phase factors define the Lorentz transformations between the local inertial coordinate systems of different positions. With this point we show that the spectral shifts in the curved spacetime, such as the gravitational and cosmological redshifts, can be understood as Doppler shifts. All these shifts are interpreted in a unified way as being originated from the relative motion of the free falling observers instantaneously static with the wave source and the receiver respectively. The gravitational phase factor of quantum systems in the curved spacetime is also discussed.

Abstract:The transformation formulas between two inertial frames for the minimum phase velocity and the phase velocity in an arbitrary direction are given. The derived transformation formula for the reciprocal of the phase velocity along the particle's direction of motion is a correction of the formula provided by J.J. Zhang and P.X. Wang in Wave Motion 50 (2013) 520-524.

The geometrical origin of the Doppler factor in the Lienard-Wiechert potentials

Abstract:We present an in depth analysis and a new derivation of the Doppler factor in the Lienard-Wiechert potentials, based on geometrical considerations in Minkowski space. We argue that, contrary to a common assumption, the methods used for deriving the Doppler factor in the case of an electrically charged extended particle are not applicable in the case of a point particle. A geometrical interpretation of the Doppler factor is nonetheless found in the later case, based on the electromagnetic interaction model of Fokker. In this model the interaction takes place between infinitesimal worldline segments with end points connected by light signals, just like the points where light pulses are emitted and detected in general. This analogy reveals that the relativistic Doppler effect is the missing link between the classical Doppler effect and the Doppler factor in the Lienard-Wiechert potentials.
