Abstract:It is interesting whether Chinese corporate donations mainly result from managerial discretion or value enhancement,and we give some evidences based on corporate donations aftermath the 5·12 Wenchuan earthquake.We find that firms sensitive to consumer trust and firms with high margin give donations more easily,more timely and with more amounts,and the donation amounts also depend on corporate profit and financial conditions.These evidences support the value enhancement hypothesis.

Abstract:This paper examines the association between corporate philanthropy and tunneling by controlling shareholders. Using a unique dataset from China, the paper finds evidence that firms donating more are less likely to tunnel. The negative association between philanthropy and tunneling is stronger when firms are faced with more severe agency conflicts, as indicated by lower largest shareholding, fewer growth opportunities, lower state ownership, and weaker product market competition. The results suggest that companies engaging in philanthropy have incentives to enhance their reputations and improve their relationships with stakeholders.

Abstract:This paper examines the association between corporate philanthropy and corporate misconduct. Using panel data from China, we find a negative relationship between philanthropic engagement and the likelihood of subsequent corporate misconduct. In addition, we find that the favorable effect of philanthropy on corporate misconduct is stronger when a company's philanthropic giving is more sustained, when a company is located in a region with a stronger external institutional environment, and when a company is not a state-owned enterprise. Our results suggest that companies engaging in philanthropy have incentives to enhance their reputations and build their relationships with stakeholders. Our research extends the extant literature on corporate misconduct by identifying a new antecedent relating to corporate philanthropy and provides valuable insights for practitioners in terms of how to assess and predict the link between corporate philanthropy and the likelihood of its subsequent misconduct.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate that corporate philanthropy can be driven from the bottom to the top. In particular, the authors investigate whether employees’ donations influence corporate philanthropy and under what conditions this effect occurs. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of Chinese listed firms that disclosed the amount employees donated in response to the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. The Heckman two-stage selection model is applied to examine the effect of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy and the conditions under which this effect occurs. Findings The results show that employees’ donations are positively associated with corporate philanthropy. Furthermore, a higher percentage of females in top management teams can significantly strengthen the effect of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy. When the average age of the top management team members is high, the influence of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy is stronger. Practical implications This is an empirical study that helps to predict corporate philanthropy. Another practical implication is that employees should be recognized as an important element of corporate social responsibility. Social implications The results encourage employees to become drivers of corporate social responsibility. Originality/value This study contributes to the corporate social responsibility literature by demonstrating that corporate philanthropy can be driven from the bottom to the top. Moreover, this study integrates signaling theory into the study of corporate social responsibility. Finally, this study identifies two important contingent factors that strengthen the effect of employees on top managers’ decisions about corporate social responsibility.

Abstract:This article follows recent development on the socioemotional wealth perspective to examine the impact of family involvement on corporate charitable donations. Based on data collected from 2,821 Chinese private firms, we find that (a) family ownership and the duration of family control positively affect charitable donations and (b) when the next generation is unwilling to take over the business, the positive relationship between family ownership and charitable donations becomes weaker. These findings show that firms’ proactive stakeholder engagement is susceptible to family involvement. They also highlight the possible existence of the “dark” effect of certain socioemotional wealth dimensions on firms’ proactive stakeholder engagement.

Abstract:A research was made of the data collected from 290 firms in Yangtze River delta involved in contribution from the year 2004 to 2006.The analysis and test based on a structural equation modeling show that corporate giving can be reified to different kinds of characteristics,which affect the competitive advantages of firms differently.The characteristics of contribution have indirect influence on the firms’ competitive advantages by transferring social capital to firms and the competitive advantages of firms are improved.Finally,some effective policies are proposed to encourage firms to participate into philanthropy.

Abstract:This paper examines the influence of family management on corporate charitable donations. Drawing from the literature on socioemotional wealth, we propose that the level of family management and corporate charitable donations presents an inverted U‐shaped relationship, and that this inverted U‐shaped relationship is weakened by firm diversification levels and an unfair competition environment. An analysis of a comprehensive data set comprising 9266 firm‐year observations, encompassing 1445 publicly listed Chinese family firms from 2010 to 2021, provides empirical support for our hypotheses. The results remain robust when accounting for endogeneity concerns. This study contributes to the growing body of research on environmental, social, and governance in the field of finance and accounting, and enhances our knowledge of sustainability practices in family firms.

Abstract:PurposeFrom an institutional perspective, this study empirically examines whether institutional pressures, such as industry pressures and public attention, significantly influence corporate philanthropic disaster responses (CPDRs). Furthermore, this paper aims to examine the moderating role of a company’s prior history of philanthropic donation.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses secondhand data from 217 Chinese listed companies that responded philanthropically to the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.FindingsThis paper finds that both industry pressure and public attention are positively associated with companies’ donations; their prior history of philanthropic donations significantly moderates these relationships such that these relationships become stronger and for companies that have prior histories of small philanthropic donations.Originality/valueFirst, this paper contributes to the philanthropy literature by identifying two kinds of institutional pressures (i.e. industry pressure and public attention) that exert great influences on CPDR contributions. Second, by studying the moderating role of firms’ prior philanthropic history, this study contributes to the understanding of companies’ different reactions to institutional pressures. In addition to the theoretical contribution, this paper encourages companies to proactively establish a sustainable philanthropic giving plan rather than being passively driven by external stakeholders.

Abstract:Abstract Using empirical evidence gathered from Chinese listed companies, this article explores the relationship between micro-governance mechanisms and corporate philanthropy from a corporate governance perspective. In China’s emerging market, ultimate controlling shareholders of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are reluctant to donate their assets or resources to charitable organizations; in private enterprises (PEs) marked by more deviation in voting and cash flow rights, such donations tend to be more likely. However, the ultimate controllers in PEs refuse to donate assets or resources they control or own, which implies that corporate philanthropy by PEs comes at the cost of others, through assets or resources owned by minority shareholders. Even after devastating natural disasters such as the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the controlling shareholders continue to express reluctance to donate any assets they control. Despite widespread evidence that corporate philanthropy boosts corporate growth and profitability, these ultimate controllers indicate no intention to donate their own money as a means to improve corporate performance.

What Drives Corporate Charitable Contributions, Market Forces, Government Influences, or Political Goodwill? Evidence from China

Abstract:This study examines the determinants and consequences of corporate charitable contributions in China. Using a large sample of listed firms from 2001 to 2006, we find that firms with political connections are more likely to make charitable contributions. Firms owned by local governments are more likely to make charitable contributions than firms owned by the central government. Furthermore, we find that resource constraints and industry competition cannot explain corporate philanthropy in China. We document a positive association between charitable contributions and future firm performance but find no evidence that charitable contributions affect future sales growth. Further analysis indicates that firms making charitable contributions received more bank loans and government subsidies. The overall results are consistent with listed companies in China using charitable contributions to build the political goodwill with the government.

Abstract:Taking as the object of our analysis the behavior of China's listed companies' donation in the Wenchuan Earthquake,we have,in this paper,mainly explored the impact of the close attention given by the media(CAGBTM) on listed companies' behavior of donation and the correlations between their donation,the nature of their ownership,the extent of industrial competition,and the effect of the direct sale of products to consumers on donation.Based on the regression results by means of combing conation samples with non-donation samples,we have discovered that the CAGBTM has noticeable positive effect on listed companies' behavior of donation,showing that the possible pressure from the public opinion has obviously increased the possibility of listed companies' donation,that,owing to the consideration of the economic motives such as the public relationship,advertising,and reputation,this positive impact has been expressed more markedly in non-state owned listed companies and in listed companies selling products directly to consumers,that the CAGBTM can also significantly decrease the negative effect of the state control ownership and the negative effect of the degree of industrial monopoly on donation,and that the media has played a noteworthy and positive role in listed companies' performance of the social responsibilities.However,by the regression analysis of the donation samples,we have found that the above-mentioned various noticeable impacts of the media have not existed any longer,and that,therefore,the results of the impact of CAGBTM are confined to whether listed companies donate,and those results have had no noticeable bearing on the donation level when a listed company has decided to donate,which,possibly is related to the listed companies' irrational decision on the actual level of donation and to the fact that the listed companies have not fully considered the relative factors and the social expectation.

Abstract:This article examines whether the charitable giving amount and likelihood of firm response to catastrophic events relate to firms’ ownership type using a unique dataset of listed firms in China, where state ownership is still prevalent. Based on the data of Chinese firms’ response to the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, we find that the extent of corporate contributions for state-owned firms following this disaster is less than that for private firms. State-owned firms are also less likely to respond in␣this disaster compared to private firms. The results also␣reveal that firm size, profitability, geography, cash resource available, and leverage affect firms’ philanthropic disaster response behavior in China.

Abstract:With regard to the supply of public goods, existing literature mainly focuses on the crowding out effect of public provision of public goods on private provision, while the adverse effect has been largely neglected. In this paper, building on the perspective of private provision's impact on public provision, we attempt to investigate the causal effect of corporate donation on firms' tax aggressiveness. We use the IV method to address potential endogeneity and find that corporate donation does not lead to more tax aggressiveness. We propose a supervision mechanism to explain the results. We empirically demonstrate the effect of supervision by including the local workforce of media business in the regression.

Abstract:This study examines how natural catastrophes affect corporate philanthropic activities in China. Firms located in areas experiencing severe seismic losses increase charitable donations. The effect is stronger when firms demonstrate stronger social responsibility, operate in higher-mortality regions, and are led by female or elder CEOs, supporting the mortality salience hypothesis. We address endogeneity issues with an instrumental variable and a propensity score matching approaches. Furthermore, firms with higher charitable donations experience a more positive stock market reaction around the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. Overall, our findings suggest that natural catastrophes amplify financial market participants' mortality salience and affect their economic decisions.

Abstract:This study examines the external socio-cultural and natural environment factors that driving corporate philanthropy in China. We focus on two predominant influences: religiosity, specifically the traditional Three-Teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism), and seismic activities. Using a large sample of 31,673 firm-year observations from Chinese listed firms from 2009 to 2020, our findings reveal that (a) firms immersed in more pronounced religious-cultural presence have higher donation incentives, and (b) firms experiencing higher seismic impacts or are located in high seismic risk areas show heightened corporate philanthropic tendencies. Our multidisciplinary approach bridges various academic disciplines, presenting an innovative framework for understanding the intersection of corporate philanthropy, socio-cultural environments, and natural disasters in China. Overall, we highlight the importance of external environmental factors in shaping corporate charitable behaviours.

Abstract:Donation issue in emerging economy has been a research focus in the field of corporate social responsibility.When a firm faces up with a natural disaster,society will have a strong expectation for the firm to donate.However,the existing literature ignores the comparison between Chinese and foreign firms' donation behavior when they have different external environmental understanding in this background.Based on context of Wenchuan Earthquake,we study the donation amount,donation density,and reaction speed to this earthquake on account of internal strategic resource and external social expectation.The conclusions lies that,due to different home country's culture and behavior recognition,Chinese firms donate more money and have bigger donation density and faster reaction speed to the expectation than foreign peers.This conclusion is contrary to general intuition that foreign firms should more actively take part into CSR activities considering that they earn more money.Moreover,there is different motivation for these two kinds of firms to donate.Internal strategic resource elasticity drives foreign firms to donate more and react faster than Chinese firms,and external public opinion will push Chinese firms do more than their peers.Therefore,this study enriches the understanding to Chinese and foreign firms' implementation of corporate social responsibility in China.
Does Ownership Affect Corporate Social Responsibility? Evidence from Chinese Companies' Response to Targeted Poverty Alleviation

Abstract:With the Chinese economy's development and growing wealth disparity, enhancing corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a crucial issue for the government. Existing research has mainly focused on the impact of factors such as firm size, CEO characteristics, and industry affiliation on CSR. However, this study explores the impact of ownership on the amount of corporate donations from a different perspective. Using Difference-in-Differences (DID) approach with data from A-share listed companies between 2010 and 2020, this study analyzes how ownership affects donation amounts. The results demonstrate that ownership structure significantly affects donation amounts. The findings indicate that private enterprises are more likely to increase their donation amounts after the implementation of targeted poverty alleviation policies, with a growth rate that is 13.03% higher compared to non-private enterprises. The study also identifies firm size, the years of company listing, growth, and asset-liability ratio as factors affecting donation amounts. Furthermore, through mechanism analysis, return on assets, bank loans, and financing constraints are identified as the main mechanisms through which ownership influences donation amounts. The research has important implications for understanding how corporations can enhance their CSR performance, and government agencies can develop relevant policies to promote CSR among enterprises.

The philanthropic response of substantive and symbolic corporate social responsibility strategies to COVID-19 crisis: Evidence from China

Abstract:The COVID-19 epidemic broke out in China in January 2020, which triggered the largest wave of corporate philanthropic donations since the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Based on A-share listed firms in the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges in 2020, we study whether substantive and symbolic corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies affect corporate philanthropic responses during the COVID-19 crisis. We use the lagged annual donation and technical dimension scores (T scores) of rankins ratings (RKS) as proxies of CSR performance and CSR disclosure and then define the CSR gap as the gap between the two. The results show that substantive and symbolic strategies cause firms to have material differential responses in the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, the CSR gap is negatively related to the possibility and the level of crisis donation. In addition, (1) this difference is more pronounced in the earlier period of the COVID-19 crisis; (2) the negative correlation is more pronounced in private firms; and (3) the crisis donation of firms with either strategy obtains no different response from the capital market. Our evidence suggests that the established CSR strategy influences the substantive response of Chinese firms to public emergencies, but their substantive response does not result in different reactions in the capital market.

Abstract:The relationship between philanthropy and corporate value is a hot topic in corporate social responsibility research. The paper analyses and makes an empirical test on the moderating impact of stakeholder satisfaction on the value effect of corporate philanthropy. Using China＇s listed companies＇ panel data from 2002 to 2008, the results reveal that philanthropy＇s value effect is made in the condition of stakeholder satisfaction .And the higher stakeholder satisfaction, the more obvious value effect of corporate philanthropy. Further research suggests that enterprise resources, board governance and marketization respectively strengthens and weakens the moderating impact of stakeholder satisfaction. The paper is not only of great importance to deeply understand the value of corporate philanthropy but also of enlightenments for better performing philanthropic responsibility.
