Abstract:Oil spill occurs frequently on the ocean. The amount of oil spill is 900 million tons from 2001 to 2010 in total, which resulted in enormous environment pollution and economic loss. The disadvantages of conventional methods such as pipe pumping method are high-energy-consuming, inefficient and high-cost. In this paper, a new method was proposed and a novel efficient oil spill cleaner was developed, which can recover 25kg oil per hour despite only 4kg weight of the cleaner itself. By using image recognition, advanced control algorithm, and roller extrusion, oil spill is detected and recovered automatically and effectively. The new method can decrease 60% energy consumption and triple the oil recovering rate. It can be concluded that this oil spill cleaner is an ideal prototype of the large novel marine oil spill recovery vessels.

Abstract:Based on a well-verified two-dimensional mathematical tidal current model,this paper proposed an spill model using oil method,with the combined processes of spreading,advection and turbulent diffusion.The model used fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for solving the particle advection process,and the non-Fickian diffusion generated by a fractional Brownian motion algorithm was used to simulate the extension of slick.The algorithm was implemented to predict spill trajectories in the northern port area of the Yueqing Bay in different circumstances of tidal current and wind,and the impact of slick on the areas concerned was analyzed.

Abstract:The accidental oil spill is one of the most critical disasters in coastal areas and can cause serious damage to the ecosystem and society. Oil spill spreading is a complex process involving the highly nonlinear interaction of two fluids with very different properties. In this study, the Consistent Particle Method (CPM) is enhanced by incorporating the continuum surface force model and applied to simulate oil spill spreading. Firstly, based on a circular ring case, the advantage of CPM in computing the curvature of an interface (key in simulating the interfacial tension force) is demonstrated, and the influence of the smoothing length in curvature calculation is tested as well. Secondly, the capability of the CPM model in capturing the interfacial tension force is validated by the case of two-dimensional droplet deformation. Finally, the benchmark examples, namely, oil slick spreading in a reservoir and oil spill from a damaged tank, are studied by the enhanced CPM model. The influence of adding the surface tension model in the simulation is examined. The morphological and kinematic properties of the oil spill process are discussed.

Abstract:A three-dimensional integrated model is developed for simulating transport and final fate of oil spills in seas. The model contains two main modules, flow and transport-fate modules. The flow module uses an unstructured finite-volume wave-ocean coupling model. Using unstructured meshes provides great flexibility for modeling the flow in complex geometries of tidal creeks, barriers and islands. In the transport-fate module the oil dispersion is solved using a particle-tracking method. Horizontal diffusion is simulated using random walk techniques in a Monte Carlo framework, whereas the vertical diffusion process is solved on the basis of the Langeven equation. The model simulates the most significant processes that affect the motion of oil particles, such as advection, surface spreading, evaporation, dissolution, emulsification and turbulent diffusion as well as the interaction of the oil particles with the shoreline, sedimentation and the temporal variations of oil viscosity, density and surface tension. The model simulates either continuous or instantaneous oil spills, and also other toxic matter. This model has been applied to simulate the oil spill accident in the Bohai Sea. In comparison with the observations, the numerical results indicate that the model is reasonably accurate.
Modeling Underwater Transport of Oil Spilled from Deepwater Area in the South China Sea

Abstract:Based on a Lagrangian integral technique and Lagrangian particle-tracking technique, a numerical model was developed to simulate the underwater transport of oil from a deepwater spill. This model comprises two submodels: a plume dynamics model and an advection-diffusion model. The former is used to simulate the stages dominated by the initial jet momentum and plume buoyancy of the spilled oil, while the latter is used to simulate the stage dominated by the ambient current and turbulence. The model validity was verified through comparisons of the model predictions with experimental data from several laboratory flume experiments and a field experiment. To demonstrate the capability of the model further, it was applied to the simulation of a hypothetical oil spill occurring at the seabed of a deepwater oil/gas field in the South China Sea. The results of the simulation would be useful for contingency planning with regard to the emergency response to an underwater oil spill.

Abstract:Marine oil spill has long-term harmful impact on both marine ecosystem and economics. Recently as the increase in China's rapid economic growth, the demand for energy is increasing, leading to the high risk of marine oil spill pollution. So it is essential that we improve emergency response capacity in marine oil spill pollution and develop oil spill prediction and early warning in China. In this study, based on Lagrange tracking approach, we have developed an oil spill model. Combining with high-resolution meteorological and hydrodynamic model, the oil spill model was applied to predict the drift and diffusion processes of Dalian oil spill. The predicted results are well agreed with the analyzed synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image, and provided effective oil spill behaviour prediction to Shandong Maritime Safety Administration.

Abstract:A computer model for simulation of oil slick transport in seas by a Lagrangian discrete parcel algorithm is proposed. Oil spilled in a water body, regardless of whether it is originated as a surface or subsurface spill, consists of a floating surface slick and suspended oil droplets in the water column. In this algorithm the oil slick is viewed as a large number of small parcels of equal mass and their discrete path and mass are followed and recorded as functions of tune relative to a reference grid system in space. The movement of each parcel in the sea is affected by the wind, water current, and concentration of surrounding parcels. The transport of spilled oil is governed by advection, horizontal spreading, turbulent diffusion, evaporation, dissolution, emulsification, the interaction of oil with the shoreline, and sedimentation. In addition, photochemical reactions and biodegradation can also affect the characters of the oil and reduce the amount of oil over a long period of time. The model simulates both continuous and instantaneous oil spills, not only oil spills, but also of other toxic matter. American Princeton Ocean Model is applied in this paper as the hydraulic model. Sample simulations for oil spills in Bohai are presented.

Abstract:With the development of marine resources and marine transportation, oil spill accidents occur frequently which threaten the marine ecological environment and human life. In this paper, an oil spill model was established. The two-dimensional shallow water equation was discretized by the finite element weighted lumped mass method, and the time is discretized by the forward Euler scheme, then the planar two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was established. The model was verified by measure tidal level data. The oil particle drift model and oil spill weathering model were established in this paper, and it can be used to simulate the oil spill accidents on the sea area by inputting the terrain data, environmental conditions and oil spill information into the hydrodynamic model and oil spill model. The model is applied to Daya Bay, South China Sea, the oil spill behavior and destination under different residual currents were simulated and calculated, the pollution area of oil spill under clockwise residual flow is larger than that under anti-clockwise residual flow. The oil spill model is mainly used to simulate oil spill accidents on the sea surface such as ship oil spill accidents, and the simulation results can provide theoretical basis for taking effective emergency measures and risk assessment after oil spill.
Impact of ocean waves on transport of underwater spilled oil in the Bohai Sea

Abstract:To investigate the impact of ocean waves on transport of underwater spilled oil, a wave action module is developed and embedded into an underwater oil spill model. Combined with a validated hydrodynamic background data, the model is applied to a short-term numerical simulation of the 2011 Penglai 19-3 oil spill event in the Bohai Sea. Numerical result shows that the model result is rationally consistent with the field observation. In addition, waves can influence surface oil slick in both horizontal and vertical directions: in horizontal direction, Stokes drift tends to make oil slick spread more widely under the action of wind-waves; in vertical direction, breaking waves tend to entrain the surface oil into water column, and then affects the vertical distribution of spilled oil. Furthermore, sensitivity study shows that using different parameterizations of wave entrainment can make some difference to the model output, but the effect is limited. Besides, the impact of input wave errors varies on different model outputs. This study is expected to provide offshore oil spill emergency responders and researchers with useful information on oil spill monitoring, emergency plans and environmental damage assessment.

Abstract:A comprehensive mathematical model is developed to simulate the behavior of buoyant oil jets that result from the seabed pipeline. The mathematical model is developed based on a Lagrangian integral technique. The model considers the emulsification for the first time, the shear induced entrainment, the forced entrainment, the diffusion and dissolution of oil spills from the pipeline to the ambient. The model can simulate the behavior of oil in stratified or unstratified hydraulic environments. The presence of a variable ambient current is considered. The trajectory and concentration of oil spills are discussed in variable Froude number, stratified number and the ratio between the magnitudes of jet velocity and ambient velocity. The total dissolution and emulsification are both a little. The numerical model is tested against a variety of conditions. The cases compared include 2-D and 3-D jet trajectories. All comparisons show that the numerical model results match very well with the experimental data. So the model is exact and reliable and can give the diffusion and buoyant trajectories of oil spills from seabed pipeline.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION STUDY OF OIL SPILL DIFFUSION IN THE QUANZHOU BAY AREA BASED ON AN OIL PARTICLE MODEL

Abstract:Based on a two-dimensional tidal current mathematical model, this study used the oil particle method to establish an oil spill model in the Quanzhou Bay area to simulate the oil film drift path and degree of impact after the oil spill under various tidal conditions, i.e., the maximum flood, spring tide, maximum ebb and low tide in a tidal cycle under conditions of calm wind, the prevailing northeasterly wind in winter and the prevailing southwesterly wind in summer. The simulation results indicate that the drift trajectory of oil film in the Quanzhou Bay area was primarily influenced by the position of the oil spill point, wind conditions and tide when the oil spill occurred: marine areas of approximately 40-117 km, 18-117 km, and 51-159 km were affected by the oil film in 12 hours in a NE wind-driven current in winter, a SW wind-driven current in summer, and calm wind conditions, respectively. This study provides the scope and degree of influence of possible oil spill accidents in the Quanzhou Bay area and the time intervals between when an oil spill occurs and when sensitive targets become affected. This work offers scientific support for decision making and environmental damage assessment for oil spill emergencies, as well as useful exploration criteria for the accurate simulation of oil spill diffusion at sea.

Abstract:An oil spill accident will cause serious harm to marine ecology and the environment. Rapid response and effective prevention methods are required to minimize the damage of oil spill accidents. The critical problems that marine emergency rescue teams face are when the spilled oil reaches the sea surface, the extent of the spilled oil, and how far they are from the drilling platform. However, there is no reliable model to predict the diffusion distance of spilled oil. Accurately predicting the diffusion characteristics of underwater spilled oil can provide timely and accurate information for the treatment of oil spill accidents and guide the correct implementation of emergency treatment. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to establish a two-phase flow model for the diffusion of a submarine oil spill. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique was implemented to track the interface between oil–water phases. The effects of different parameters on leakage and diffusion characteristics were investigated by adjusting spilled oil velocity, ocean current velocity, crude oil density, and crude oil viscosity. The logarithmic velocity profile was adopted for ocean currents to conform to the actual flow near the sea surface. A user-defined function (UDF) was developed and applied for CFD modeling. The focus was on analyzing the diffusion range (rising height Hp and lateral migration distance Wp) from full-field data. The results indicate that the oil spill velocity, ocean current velocity, crude oil density, and crude oil viscosity impact the viscous shear force, the oil spill's inertia force, and the current shear effect. The formula for calculating the lateral migration distance of spilled oil under different working conditions was obtained by fitting. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for formulating an emergency treatment plan for offshore oil spill accidents and minimizing the harm to marine ecology and the environment.

Abstract:This study extends previous two-dimensional research [Wang, S.D., Shen, Y.M., Zheng, Y.H., 2005. Two-dimensional numerical simulation for transport and fate of oil spills in seas. Ocean Engineering 32, 1556–1571] to three dimensions in order to investigate the vertical dispersion/motion of the spilled oil slick, which is a more realistic model of the motion of the spilled oil. To this end, a three-dimensional (3-D) model, based on the particle approach, is developed for simulating oil spill transport and fate in seas. The amount of oil released at sea is distributed among a large number of particles tracked individually. These particles are driven by a combination of water current, wave- and wind-induced speed and move in a 3-D space. Horizontal and vertical diffusion are taken into account using a random walk technique. The model simulates the most significant processes which affect the motion of oil particles, such as advection, surface spreading, evaporation, dissolution, emulsification, turbulent diffusion, the interaction of the oil particles with the shoreline, sedimentation and the temporal variations of oil viscosity, density and surface tension. In addition, the processes of hydrolysis, photo-oxidation and biodegradation are also considered in this model. The model has been applied to simulate the oil spill accident in the Bohai Sea.

Detailed comparisons of simulations with analytical solutions and numerical simulations made with the popular structured finite difference model ROMS (the Regional Ocean Modeling System) for two idealized cases: wind-induced long-surface gravity waves in a circular lake and freshwater discharge onto the continental shelf with curved coastlines, are presented. With a better fit to the curvature of the coastline using unstructured nonoverlapping triangle grid cells, the developed model system provides improved numerical accuracy in simulating the oil spill trajectory. Also keep in mind that attention must be paid to choose the horizontal and vertical resolution in simulating the oil trajectory in the coastal ocean.

Abstract:Marine oil spill may bring irreversible damage to the marine environmentof China Seas,and will cause immeasurable economical loss.Therefore,there is strong needs to study on oil spill prediction and early warning technology,providing technical support for marine oil spill response.This paper briefly introduced the development and achievements of the numerical prediction technology of oil spill spreading,drift and diffusion,including the oil spill spreading model,the oil spill drift and diffusion model,and the oil spill prediction and early warning system,which provide theoretic criterions for the future work on oil spill response.
A numerical oil spill model based on a hybrid method

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is the development of a hybrid particle tracking/Eulerian-Lagrangian approach for the simulation of spilled oil in coastal areas. Oil discharge from the source is modeled by the release of particles. When the oil slick thickness or the oil concentration reaches a critical value, particles are mapped on slick thickness or node concentrations, and the calculations proceed in the Eulerian-Lagrangian mode. To acquire accurate environment information, the model is coupled with the 3-D free-surface hydrodynamics model (POM) and the third-generation wave model (SWAN). By simulating the oil processes of spreading, advection, turbulent diffusion, evaporation, emulsification, dissolution and shoreline deposition, it has the ability to predict the horizontal movement of surface oil slick, the vertical distribution of oil particles, the concentration in the water column and the mass balance of spilled oil. An accidental oil release near Dalian coastal waters is simulated to validate the developed model. Compared with the satellite images of oil slicks on the surface, the numerical results indicate that the model has a reasonable accuracy.
