Abstract:There are a lot of research works as well as books written about SCM strategy, but few books are based on strategic theory of management in a pure sense. As a result, theories themselves are shallow and not in depth. In other words, SCM focuses on a strategic area of supply chain activities while, however, there are few books written on a basis of the theoretical or traditional articles of management strategy in a pure sense. The aims of this article are to review the theoretical strategy formulation concepts out of 50 books published in 2004 through 1990 while we had made logistics literature studies in the middle of 1995 with almost same approach and contributed to academic journals in Japan. This type of SCM literature study is a brand new research and the first attempt of research activity in Japan. As a survey result, it has made clear that most of books paid little attention to structural aspects of SCM strategy formulation as a state of art SCM model linked with management strategy theory. Therefore, we have reviewed the contents of SCM strategy written in fifty books and finally proposed our own SCM strategy structure and formulation based on strategic theories extracted from traditional international management theory as well as strategic theory of classical management.

Abstract:This paper starts from the analysis of the definition of supply chain, and compares the traditional cost management mode of Chinese enterprises with cost management mode based on supply chain by the method of comparison. The paper points out that the cost management based on supply chain, which aims at the improvement of customers' satisfaction and the market demand orientation, is a wholly new cost management method. This new management mode demands an effective coordination between upstream and downstream enterprises, and an extension of space and time of cost management from traditional workshop to the fields of development, design, supply and distribution. In the cost management strategies based on cost management, systematic planning and the integration of supply chain are the premises of success; the application of information technology is the guarantee of success; dynamic managed supply chain is an effective way to success; and the customer oriented target cost management technique is the priority of cost management.
The Impact of Supply Chain Partnership on Firm Performance: an Empirical Study Based on Listed Manufacturing Companies in China

Abstract:Today, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is regarded as an essential strategic factor, which has a great deal of influence on earning competitiveness in global business environment. There are conflicts among all members of the SCM. In order to maximize the total profit of the SCM, negotiation among all members is necessary. For enterprise in the supply chain, the supply chain partnership has become a significant factor affecting firm performance. In this paper, I examine the impact of cooperation between enterprise and its supply chain partners. Specifically, I collect survey data from Chinese manufacturing firms about their relations with partners and use regression analysis to test hypotheses about the associations between firm performance and supply chain partnership. My results support that superior supplier partnership has a positive impact on reducing transaction costs and improving financial and market performance. In additional test, I establish a series of models with interactive terms. The results of additional test indicate that the impact is enhanced if the competition of each sub industry of the manufacturing industry is different. Above all, I put forward the following suggestions. Enterprise managers could establish an evaluation mechanism of suppliers and retailers, which select high-quality cooperative partners and reduce low-quality transaction costs for enterprises. When participating in business operation, shareholders could comprehensively understand the business conditions of various supply partners and choose reliable supply chain partners for investment. Also, the government can guide the realization of resource sharing and information exchange among supply chain enterprises, which is beneficial to create a more competitive supply chain to promote economic development.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of supply chain integration (SCI) in improving sustainability management practices (SMPs) and performance. Design/methodology/approach - Based on data collected from 931 manufacturing firms in multiple countries and regions, the authors conducted a structural equation modeling analysis to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings - The findings suggest that supplier and customer integration are vital enablers for both intra- and inter-organizational SMPs. The results also reveal that both intra- and inter-organizational SMPs are significantly and positively associated with sustainability performance (i.e. economic, environmental and social performance) and function as complements to jointly enhance environmental and social performance. Originality/value - This study incorporates SCI into the sustainability literature, providing a new perspective on sustainability and supply chain management research.

Abstract:<p>This paper proposes an integrative approach to exploring the contribution of supply chain management (SSCM) to business performance. Three dimensions of SSCM, i.e., inbound sustainability, internal sustainability, and outbound sustainability, were proposed. The conceptual model was tested in the context of the Chinese manufacturing sector using partial least squares structural equation modeling. The results showed that outbound sustainability was directly related to business performance, while inbound and internal sustainability indirectly affected business performance. The model also revealed that customer integration enhanced the relationship between internal sustainability and outbound sustainability. The results suggested that supply-side and demand-side sustainability had unique roles and that the entire supply chain should be integrated when exploring the link between SCCM and business performance. A supply-side collaborative advantage was necessary but not sufficient, and business performance was achieved only when demand-side value creation was realized. The findings emphasize the distinctive role of each dimension of SSCM and the importance of integrating the entire supply chain.</p>

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how a foreign invested manufacturing company’s (FIMC) components sourcing process evolves in order to improve its supply chain outcomes in the context of China’s processing trade. Design/methodology/approach Grounded in the theory bases of the international sourcing process and supply chain integration, this study utilizes a single-case-study approach with a small- to medium-sized FIMC engaged in China’s processing trade. Findings This study identifies three stages of the components sourcing process: simple assembly stage, components localization stage and supply chain integration stage. In addition, the case study suggests that the type of processing trade evolves from processing with supplied materials to processing with imported materials as the sourcing process proceeds through the three stages and the internal and external environments change. Originality/value To our knowledge, this paper is the first to focus on an FIMC’s components sourcing process in the context of China’s processing trade. It contributes to a better understanding of how FIMCs progress through the components sourcing process and apply different types of processing trade in China to maximize their supply chain outcomes.
Management Strategy of Materials Supply for Manufacturing Organizations

Abstract:Supply chain structure and externality are two important factors that should be considered when manufacturing organizations make the management strategy of materials supply. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the combined impacts of these two factors on the performance of both individual firms and entire supply chain so as to find some related management implications. We set up a supply chain network model composed of two supply chains and each supply chain has two modes, namely, upstream and downstream firms. Two types of externalities, i.e., negative (substitution) and positive (complementarity), and three types of supplier relationships between upstream and downstream firms, i.e., DMI, UMI and CMI, are considered, respectively. We first give the equilibrium for the price and quantity games between upstream and downstream firms in their material purchasing transactions. We then show that, no matter the externality appears to be negative or positive, changing supplier relationship from arms-length to partnership would enable a firm to have the initiative in the competition. However, two different types of externalities have opposite impacts on the firm’s materials supply strategies and finally on the firm’s performance. We also analyze the overlapped impacts of exogenous parameters such as initial market demand, market price and manufacturing costs and results show that the overlapped impacts make competition between different supply chains more serious when the externalities are negative. While if both the upstream and downstream firms in one supply chain, under certain coordination mechanism, jointly improve their products quality and innovation ability, this supply chain would finally get better results than another supply chain, therefore makes the two firms in this supply chain to get a win–win result.

Logistics Sourcing Strategies in Supply Chain Design

Abstract:A company’s logistics sourcing strategy determines whether it structures and organizes logistics within the company or company group or integrates logistics upstream and downstream in the supply chain. First, three different types of logistics sourcing strategies in supply chain design are described and the theoretical background for the development of these strategies, including both transaction cost theory and network theory, is analyzed. Two special cases about logistics sourcing strategy decision-making in China’s electric household appliance (EHA) industry are discussed, based on the above theoretical analysis. Then, the factors that drive the selection of a company’s logistics sourcing strategy are analyzed. These factors include market factors, external logistics service provision factors and a company’s internal factors. Chinese features in logistics sourcing strategies are summarized based on the above case studies. Finally, some management insights are discussed.

Abstract:Supply chain management has become one of the most popular approaches to enhance the global competitiveness of business corporations today. Firms must have clear strategic thinking in order to effectively organize such complicated activities, resources, communications, and processes. An emerging body of literature offers a framework that identifies three kinds of supply chain strategies: lean strategy, agile strategy, and lean/agile strategy based on in‐depth case studies. Extant research also suggests that supply chain strategies must be matched with product characteristics in order for firms to achieve better performance. This article investigates supply chain strategies and empirically tests the supply chain strategy model that posits lean, agile, and lean/agile approaches using data collected from 604 manufacturing firms in China. Cluster analyses of the data indicate that Chinese firms are adopting a variation of lean, agile, and lean/agile supply chain strategies identified in the western literature. However, the data reveal that some firms have a traditional strategy that does not emphasize either lean or agile principles. These firms perform worse than firms that have a strategy focused on lean, agile, or lean/agile supply chain. The strategies are examined with respect to product characteristics and financial and operational performance. The article makes significant contributions to the supply chain management literature by examining the supply chain strategies used by Chinese firms. In addition, this work empirically tests the applicability of supply chain strategy models that have not been rigorously tested empirically or in the fast‐growing Chinese economy.

Abstract:Purpose In this study, the authors investigate whether supply chain (SC) strategies (lean or agile) improve or hinder the supply chain transparency (SCT) and what factors affect this relation. Design/methodology/approach The authors measure the level of SC strategy using natural language processing based on the annual financial reports of listed firms. Secondary data analysis is conducted on various databases encompassing 1,241 listed firms in China from 2011 to 2020. Additional tests are performed to assess the robustness of the results, and alternative explanations are duly considered. Findings The authors find that firms with an advanced level of SC strategy perform better on SCT. Furthermore, the authors observe that Agile SC strategy and Lean SC strategy have different effects on SCT over a firm's life cycle. Agile SC strategy (the ratio of the proportion of Agile SC strategy word frequency divided by the proportion of Lean SC strategy word frequency greater than 1) has a significantly positive effect on SCT in the maturity stage; Lean SC strategy (the ratio less than 1) has a positive effect on SCT in the growth and decline stages. An increase in online media coverage negatively moderates the impact of the SC strategy (frequency of Lean and Agile SC strategy-related keywords) on SCT in the maturity stage. An increase in government environmental subsidies positively moderates the impact of SC strategy on SCT in the maturity and decline stages. Additionally, an increase in industrial competition intensity positively moderates the impact of the SC strategy on SCT in the decline stage. Originality/value The authors' study contributes to the Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM) literature by revealing the positive impact of SC strategy on SCT with objective secondary data. Additionally, the authors examine the moderating effects of moderators over the lifecycle of a firm on this relationship in an emerging market context. The authors' findings offer valuable guidance to companies operating in diverse market environments, providing actionable insights to strengthen their SC strategies and enhance SCT.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of changing business control patterns that may be critical for firms, in order to manage effective enterprise information infrastructures in and through the Chinese market. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a typology that shows four types of Chinese market penetration and development, in terms of level of foreign management control and level of foreign ownership control. The model is illustrated through case examples of US, Korean, and Chinese firms. Findings The paper shows that sustainable design and management of enterprise information infrastructures require continuous awareness of changes in corporate management and ownership control. Research limitations/implications The transition paths among the four different types of global operations provide a rich basis for further theory development in the areas of the global supply chain practices beyond the Chinese market. Future research is needed to identify key variables that define the level of management and ownership control. Practical implications The typology and transitions paths presented in this paper may be a valuable road‐map for firms that are considering the Chinese market. In the course of implementing global supply chain strategies, foreign firms operating in China face complex business challenges, including multiple performance requirements, environmental regulations and cultural differences. In designing and managing effective enterprise information infrastructures, firms need to be conscious of both internal and external changes related to their management and ownership control. An understanding of changing business control patterns is critical if firms are to sustain effective enterprise information infrastructures in and through the Chinese market. Originality/value China is a potential global supply chain base. Global firms must consider carefully the extent of foreign management and ownership control with which they enter the Chinese market. These two dimensions are useful in analyzing the behavior and strategic options of global firms in this market.

Abstract:The renaming of the Council of Logistics Management (CLM) to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) ushered in some interesting definitional dialogue and debate within the practitioner and academic communities. Inherent in emerging definitions is the notion that SCM encompasses activities traditionally considered aspects of production, logistics, marketing, and operations management. Defining SCM in such a broad scope (i.e., a “within” and “across” functions perspective), while considered by many scholars as the true representation of the essence of SCM, creates confusion regarding the appropriate organizational level within a business that is best suited for managerial decision making regarding the phenomenon. This paper contributes to the emerging SCM dialogue by highlighting the functional spaces (the “within” function perspective), relationships, and conceptual overlaps (the “across” functions perspective) between marketing, logistics, production, operations, and supply chain management. By comparing and contrasting the literature‐based conceptual boundaries of each discipline, a framework is proposed that more clearly captures the essence of the SCM decision making sphere. Managerial insights and future research implications are presented.

This study aims to identify the key factors that influence inventory management practices, investigate efficient and effective inventory management approaches, and examine the impact of supplier cooperation on supply chain improvement. A case study approach is used to identify the key factors that influence inventory management in a factory. Efficient and effective inventory management practices are derived from the case study and may provide practical guidance for foreign manufacturers in China. This study provides a valuable tool for identifying the key factors in inventory management which can be applied to similar problems encountered in actual manufactories.
