Abstract:The space segment of BeiDou satellite navigation system (BeiDou) in China consists of two operational GEO satellites only, namely also Double Stars system. In BeiDou system employs an active positioning strategy for user localization. The systemic deficiency includes: the number of users in services is limited and receivers are incompetent in high dynamic scenarios. To overcome this deficiency of BeiDou system and widen its applications, the paper presents a passive positioning system concept based on double GEO satellites of BeiDou system and error correction models for atomic clock and barometric altimeter available user terminal. Atomic clock correction is described as the firstorder exponential attenuation model, while the altitude correction method is related with statistical proportional coefficient of barometric altimeter measurement deviation. An additional first-order term is introduced to improve model performance, which is revised clock exponential attenuation model. In addition, the paper develops the positioning algorithm that allows for passive navigation and positioning processing. Based on the satellite geometric factor, the paper analyzes relation of northern positioning error and altitude error, as well as range error derived from clock error respectively. Ground statistic and flying dynamic tests were performed to validate the above passive positioning concept and correction model. In these tests, a rubidium atomic clock is adopted in receiver to provide time standard with high accuracy and stability. In static ground test, the accumulative positioning error is less than 400m, which is improved to less than 300 m when the revised clock exponential attenuation model is used. In the dynamic fly test, the CEP positioning accuracy is better than 100m, while the vertical accuracy is better than 50m. In general, the passive positioning system based on BeiDou system, altitude and clock error correction models is feasible and practical. The correction models are valid to compensate altitude and clock error, to decrease positioning error. Ground and fly tests provide valuable validation data for proof of concept and relevant models. Further research is required to overcome positioning error accumulation and worse influence on positioning accuracy caused by altitude error.
