Abstract:Objective:To investigate whether prolonged treatment with inhaled steroids for asthmatic women has a detrimental effect on bone mass and metabolism. Methods:Bone density was measured at the lumbar spine femoral neck trochanter ward's triangle and total body of femur by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry;osteocalcin and some others were measured in 14 asthmatic women after treatment with an inhaled steroid for more than 5 months, and compared with a control group of 14 asthmatic women using no steroids. Results:There are no significant difference between the two groups in bone density (including the lumbar spine femoral neck trochanter ward's triangle and total body of femur)and other markers of bone metabolism(P0 05).There also are no significant correlation between daily dose of inhaled steroids and bone density(P0 05).But,there is significant negative correlation between the accumulative total dose of inhaled steroids and bone density on femoral neck and ward's triangle (P0 05) and between the age of asthmatic women and bone density on ward's triangle in group of inhaled steroids (P0 05).The T≤-2 5 (the T scores for bone density) has been observed on 6 part in group of inhaled steroid and 1 parts in control group. Conclusions:This study shows that although no significant difference in bone density or other makers of bone metabolism is found between the two grougs, there is significant negative correlation between the age of asthmatic women and bone density on ward's triangle and between the accumulative total dose of inhaled steroids and bone density on femoral neck and ward's triangle in group of inhaled steroids. These indicate that the accumulative total dose of inhaled steroids may adversely affect bone density in asthmatic women.
