Abstract:Three simple analytic expressions satisfying the limitation condition at low densities for the radial distribution function of hard spheres are developed in terms of a polynomial expansion of nonlinear base functions and the Carnahan-Starling equation of state. The simplicity and precision for these expressions are superior to the well-known Percus-Yevick expression. The coefficients contained in these expressions have been determined by fitting the Monte Carlo data for the first coordination shell, and by fitting both the Monte Carlo data and the numerical results of Percus-Yevick expression for the second coordination shell. One of the expressions has been applied to develop an analytic equation of state for the square-well fluid, and the numerical results are in good agreement with the computer simulation data.

Abstract:Analytical expressions for radial distribution function (RDF) are of critical importance for various applications, such as development of the perturbation theories. Theoretically, RDF expressions for odd-dimensional fluids can be obtained by solving the Percus-Yevick integral equations. But for even-dimensional cases, such as the hard disk (2D) fluid, analytical expressions are infeasible. The only 2D RDF is a heuristic expression which provides acceptable estimations for an intermediate and low density range. In this work, we employ a simple and empirical expression for the 2D RDF and the 3D RDF based on an approach proposed for the 3D RDF. The parameters are determined in such a way that the final RDF expressions are thermodynamically consistent, namely the pressure and the isothermal compressibility constraints are both satisfied. The new RDFs for the 2D and 3D hard spheres are highly accurate for the entire density range up to the first-order phase transition points. The predictions of the first coordination numbers are consistent with simulation results for the 3D fluid. Finally, by using the 2D RDF with a primitive second-order perturbation theory, the pressure-volume-temperature relation and vapor-liquid equilibrium are calculated for the 2D Lennard-Jones fluid. Comparisons with the simulation data show promising results.

Abstract:Model of hard sphere system is important part of modern theories of liquids. Radial distribution function of hard sphere fluid represented in form of explicit analytical expression allows to obtain thermodynamic potentials in analytical form, which is very helpful for further analysis and applications. A new analytical expression of radial distribution function of hard sphere fluid is developed. The density derivative of the radial distribution function and the first two terms of Barker-Henderson perturbation theory are derived as analytical expressions. The obtained results agree well with published simulation data. These results have important implications for real fluid modeling using density functional theory and perturbation theories.

Abstract:With the assumption of radial vibration, there exists only a trivial solution for a general orthotropic hollow sphere and the nonzero solution can be obtained only for a spherically isotropic hollow sphere (a special case of the orthotropic hollow sphere) and the corresponding proofs are presented. So, the numerical results given by Stavsky and Greenberg [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 113, 847–851 (2003)] for a general orthotropic hollow sphere are unreasonable.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of cylindrical shells with arbitrary boundaries is studied in this paper. Love's shell theory and Hamilton's principle are employed to derive the motion equations for cylindrical shells. A semi-analytical methodology, which incorporates Durbin's inverse Laplace transform, differential quadrature method and Fourier series expansion technique, is proposed to investigate this phenomenon. The use of the differential quadrature method provides a solution in terms of the axial direction whereas the use of Durbin's numerical inversion method generates a solution in the time domain. Comparison of calculated frequency parameters to that derived from the literature illustrates the effectiveness of the method. Specifically, convergence tests indicate that the present approach has a rapid convergence, the time-history response and the Navier's solution are in great agreement. Comparisons between time-history responses derived by two shell theories show that the results fit well with each other when the thickness-radius ratios are small enough. An analysis of the influences of boundaries on the time-history response of cylindrical shells indicates that the peak displacement is closely related to the degrees of freedom of boundaries. The influences of the length-radius ratios and the thickness-radius ratios on the peak displacement are further investigated.

Abstract:Despite an interparticle potential consisting of only an infinite repulsion at contact, the thermodynamics and dynamics of concentrated dispersions of hard spheres are not yet fully understood. Colloidal poly-(methyl methacrylate) spheres with a grafted layer of poly-(12-hydroxy stearic acid) (PMMA-PHSA) comprise a common model for investigating structural, dynamic, and rheological properties. These highly monodisperse spheres can be index matched in nonaqueous solvents, reducing van der Waals forces and allowing characterization via Light scattering. In this work, we test the behavior of these dispersions against expectations for hard spheres through observations of the phase behavior, x-ray densitometry of equilibrium sediments, and Zimm viscometry. We set the effective hard sphere volume fraction by the disorder-order transition, thereby accounting for the polymer layer, any swelling due to the solvent, and polydispersity. The melting transition then occurs close to the expected value and the equation of state for the fluid phase, extracted from the equilibrium sediment with x-ray densitometry, conforms to the Carnahan-Starling equation. However, the osmotic pressure of the crystalline phase lies slightly above that calculated for a single fee crystal even after accounting for polydispersity. Likewise the high shear viscosity of the fluid compares well with other hard sphere dispersions, but the low shear viscosity for PMMA-PHSA hard spheres exceeds those for polystyrene and silica hard spheres, e.g., a relative viscosity of 45+/-3 at phi=0.50 rather than 24. Our low shear viscosities are consistent with other PMMA-PHSA data after rescaling for both the polymer layer thickness and polydispersity, and may represent the true hard sphere curve. We anticipate that the equation of state for the crystal deviates due to polycrystallinity or a direct effect of polydispersity.

Abstract:A piecewise linear JE recursive convolution finite-difference time-domain(PLJERC-FDTD) algorithm is applied to the study of the scattering characteristics of the hypersonic flow field with near wake region of conductive metal sphere.The effects of incidence wave frequency,incidence angle,scattering angle,polarization angle,altitude and Mach number on the radar cross section(RCS) are analyzed.The results illustrate that the forward RCS is the maximal RCS of all scattering orientations' RCS.The forward RCS increases with the rise of incidence wave frequency and Mach number,decreases with the decline of altitude when the Mach number is not less than 14 in this article.The backward RCS and the bistatic RCS of flow fields vary very small with Mach number,altitude and incidence angle for UHF,L and S band,the margin of the backward RCS between flow fields and sphere are small when the Mach number is not more than 10.The backward RCS of flow fields is more than the sphere's because of the formation of wide over-dense plasma wake,the curve of backward RCS varies when the incidence wave frequency can be approached by one line for L,S band if the incidence orientation is perpendicular to the X-axis and the Mach number is not less than 14.

Abstract:Analytic expressions for the equation of state and thermodynamic properties have been derived for a generalized Lennard-Jones fluid, based on the Ross variational perturbation theory and the analytic Percus-Yevick (PY) expression for the radial distribution function of hard spheres. It is shown that the variational procedure is absolutely convergent and the calculations are convenient and fast. Numerical calculations have been made within wide temperature and density ranges. The results show that the precision is equivalent to the non-analytic modified Weeks-Chandler- Anderson (mWCA) and complete analytic mean spherical approximation (MSA) theories as compared with computer simulation results. It is concluded that the analytic theory can be applied to research practical fluids within wide temperature and density ranges.

Abstract:A simple and accurate analytic representation of square-well potential hard sphere perturbation theory is derived based upon the Zwanzig perturbation method. The higher order perturbation terms are obtained by using the Barker-Henderson approximation. A new form of radial distribution function g(R) = 1/eta Sigma(infinity)(l-1)g i(eta/1 - eta)(i) proposed and applied. The theory is tested by calculating thermodynamic properties with the four-term truncated form of the (eta/1 - eta) expansions and compared with available Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics computer simulation calculations The results are in good agreement.

Abstract:A universal cubic equation of state (UC EOS) is proposed based on a modification of the virial Percus-Yevick (PY) integral equation EOS for hard-sphere fluid. The UC EOS is extended to multi-component hard-sphere mixtures based on a modification of Lebowitz solution of PY equation for hard-sphere mixtures. And expressions of the radial distribution functions at contact (RDFC) are improved with the form as simple as the original one. The numerical results for the compressibility factor and RDFC are in good agreement with the simulation results. The average errors of the compressibility factor relative to MC data are 3.40%, 1.84% and 0.92% for CP3P, BMCSL equations and UC EOS, respectively. The UC EOS is a unique cubic one with satisfactory precision among many EOSs in the literature both for pure and mixture fluids of hard spheres.

Abstract:Making use of Weierstrass's theorem and Chebyshev's theorem and referring to the equations of state of the scaled-particle theory and the Percus-Yevick integration equation, we demonstrate that there exists a sequence of polynomials such that the equation of state is given by the limit of the sequence of polynomials. The polynomials of the best approximation from the third order up to the eighth order are obtained so that the Carnahan-Starling equation can be improved successively. The resulting equations of state are in good agreement with the simulation results on the stable fluid branch and on the metastable fluid branch.

Abstract:A generalized cubic (GC) equation of state (EOS) with two independent parameters is proposed. The GC EOS can include EOS from both virial and compressibility routes of Percus–Yevick theory in it as special cases. The two parameters are determined by fitting well-known virial coefficients of pure fluid. The generalized cubic EOS can be directly and consistently extended to multi-component mixtures merely demanding of the EOS of mixtures also is cubic, and combining two strict physical conditions for the radial distribution functions at contact (RDFC) of mixtures. The calculated virial coefficients of pure fluid and predicted compressibility factors and RDFC for both pure fluid and mixtures are excellent as compared with the simulation data. High-order Virial Coefficients and Equation of State for Hard Sphere and Hard Disk Systems

Abstract:A very simple and accurate approach is proposed to predict the high-order virial coefficients of hard spheres and hard disks. In the approach, the nth virial coefficient B(n) is expressed as the sum of n(D-1) and a remainder, where D is the spatial dimension of the system. When n > or = 3, the remainders of the virials can be accurately expressed with Padé-type functions of n. The maximum deviations of predicted B(5)-B(10) for the two systems are only 0.0209%-0.0044% and 0.0390%-0.0525%, respectively, which are much better than the numerous existing approaches. The virial equation based on the predicted virials diverges when packing fraction eta = 1. With the predicted virials, the compressibility factors of hard sphere system can be predicted very accurately in the whole stable fluid region, and those in the metastable fluid region can also be well predicted up to eta = 0.545. The compressibility factors of hard disk fluid can be predicted very accurately up to eta = 0.63. The simulated B(7) and B(10) for hard spheres are found to be inconsistent with the other known virials and therefore they are modified as 53.2467 and 105.042, respectively.

Abstract:This work aims to build a bridge between probability methods and finite element methods. It starts with considering probability distributions supported in an interval [a,b], which incorporate the traditional probability distributions defined on the whole real space as limit cases on the one hand, lead to a type of spherical probability models with wide potential applications on the other hand. This type of probability has scaling and symmetry feature, and sufficient conditions under which a density function can be generated through discrete polynomial spectrum are given in this work followed by concrete examples. The density function ρ obtained in this way has the advantage of being positive definite. Computer based numerical simulation shows that the theoretically verified criteria for probability distribution are almost optimal with respect to our testing examples. After the establishment of an approximation theorem in L1 space, we propose a probabilistic Galerkin scheme that can be either continuous or discontinuous, which is potentially useful to asymptotically solve some PDEs on the sphere locally and globally.

Abstract:Flow behavior of particles in a two-dimensional bubbling fluidized bed is predicted by using discrete hard-sphere model for particle-particle collision. Quantities of radial distribution functions of monosized particles, binary-sized particles, and binary density particles are obtained. Experimentally or theoretically proposed formulations for the radial distribution functions are evaluated based on our numerically predicted results. For monosized particles, the simulated radial distribution functions are in agreement with computed results from both Bagnold equation (1954) and Ma and Ahmadi (1986) equation. For the binary mixture with the different diameters but identical density, the pair radial distribution functions proposed by Boublik (1970) and Mansoori et al. (1971) agree with simulated data. For binary mixture of different densities, a modified equation of the pair radial distribution function is proposed to correlate from our simulation results.
Simple Analytic Expression With High Precision For The Barker-Henderson Diameter

Abstract:A fitting procedure is proposed to establish two analytic approximate expressions for the complicated Barker-Henderson (BH) diameter with Lennard-Jones potential in two temperature ranges. Considering that the differentiation is a process enlarging the errors and the integration decreasing the errors and that the derivative of BH diameter is important in the calculation of internal energy, we propose to fit the derivative directly, instead of usually fitting the original function and subsequently deriving its derivative. The simplicity and precision of two expressions developed are superior to the extensively used expressions in literature. The one with following form only has an average fitting 0.0063% in the reduced temperature range (0.4 less than or equal to kT/epsilon less than or equal to 15), and can be extrapolated to a wider temperature range (0.4 less than or equal to kT/epsilon less than or equal to 50) with an average error 0.13%, which is d/sigma = 1.1755 + 0.02878 In tau - 0.2072tau(1/4) + 0.00463tau(3/4).

Abstract:Based on the expansion and extension of the virial equation of state (EOS) of hard-sphere fluids solved by the Percus–Yevick integration equation, a universal cubic (UC) EOS is developed. The UC EOS is applied to model hard-sphere and Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluids, simple Ar and N2 liquids at low temperatures, and supercritical Ar and N2 fluids at high temperatures, as well as ten solids, respectively. The three parameters are determined for the hard-sphere fluid by fitting molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data of the third to eighth virial coefficients in the literature; for other fluids by fitting isothermal compression data; and for solids by using the Einstein model. The results show that the UC EOS gives better results than the Carnahan–Starling EOS for compressibility of hard-sphere fluids. The Helmholtz free energy and internal energy for LJ fluids are predicted and compared with MD simulation data. The calculated pressures for simple Ar and N2 liquids are compared with experimental data. The agreement is fairly good. Eight three-parameter EOSs are applied to describe isothermals of ten typical solids. It is shown that the UC EOS gives the best precision with correct behavior at high-pressure limitation. The UC EOS considering thermal effects is used to analytically evaluate the isobaric thermal expansivity and isothermal compressibility coefficients. The results are in good agreement with experimental data.
Contact behaviour of simulated rough spheres generated with spherical harmonics

Abstract:Normal contact behaviour between non adhesive fractal rough particles is studied using a finite element method (FEM). A series of spherical grain surfaces with distinguished roughness features are generated by means of Spherical Harmonics. These surfaces are described by two roughness descriptors, namely, relative roughness (Rr) and fractal dimension (FD). The contact behaviour of rough spheres with a rigid flat surface is simulated using FEM to quantify the influences of surface structure and sphere morphology by focusing on contact stiffness and true contact area. The dependence of normal contact stiffness (k) on applied normal force (F) is found to follow a power law over four orders of magnitude, with both alpha and beta being highly correlated with Rr and FD. With increasing load, the power exponent converges to that of Hertzian contact, e.g., 1/3, independent of Rr. Regions of true contact evolve through the formation of new microcontacts and their progressive merging, meanwhile the area distributions of contact island induced by various forces tend to obey similar Weibull distributions due to fractal nature in their surfaces. Contacts with larger values of Rr are found to produce contact contours with higher fractal dimension as calculated by a 2D box-counting method. Our results suggest that the correlation between radial lengths in a quasi spherical particle should be considered in studying contact behaviour.
