Abstract:As typical one-dimensional nanostructures, photonic nanowires (e.g., semiconductor nanowires, glass nanowires, polymer nanowires and metallic nanowires) offer unique properties for manipulating light on nanoscale with tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, field enhancement and abnormal dispersion[1], which opens new opportunities for exploring light-matter interaction on the nanoscale, as well as for intriguing nanoscale photonic circuits and devices that is superior to their conventional counterparts. This talk introduces our recent work on the generation (e.g., nanowire light emission[2,3] and lasing[4,5]), wavelength conversion (e.g., second-harmonic and supercontinuum generation in single nanowires[6,7]), propagation (e.g., nanowire waveguides[8]), modulation (e.g., single nanowire ultrafast optical modulators[9]) and detection (e.g., single nanowire photodetector [10] and sensors [11,12]) of light with single nanowires.

Abstract:Spatial properties of a light field, including its amplitude, polarization and phase distribution, can be modulated via spatial light modulators, digital mirror devices, optical mask, waveplates or diffraction optic elements. In conjunction with additional optical components, e.g., optical lenses or imaging systems, rich micro- and nano-photonic applications can be demonstrated. This paper reviews various useful techniques applied for the spatial light field modulations. Important applications, most notably, optical lithography for the fabrication of functional photonic crystals, and light field conversion and transmission through material system, are discussed. Key issues in the control of optical field, including phase-locking, phase distribution regulation and adaptive optical field synthesizing, are described in detail. The applications of light field modulation to enhance light-matter interaction are demonstrated for some fundamental optical processes, such as light diffraction in liquid crystal, beam combining in nonlinear optical crystal and light field transmission through a tapered nano-tip. It is anticipated that the wide-spread application of light field modulation be expected in the near future, especially in view of a rapid advancement in the nano-photonic research and applications.

Abstract:The rapid development of micro/nanomanipulation technologies has opened unprecedented opportunities for the sorting, assembly, and actuation of biological and inorganic entities for applications ranging from live‐cell separation, drug screening, biosensing to micro/nanomachines and nanorobots. To this end, remarkable progress has been made in the development of efficient, precise, and versatile nanomanipulation techniques based on individual or combined chemical and physical fields. Among them, techniques that fuse light stimuli with electric ( E ) fields, have achieved impressive performance in the versatility, reconfigurability, and throughput in the manipulation of both biological and inorganic micro/nanoscale objects compared to those of many other manipulation techniques, by leveraging the strong optoelectric coupling effect of semiconductor materials. This work provides a review of various types of light‐gated electric manipulation systems – the working principles, experimental setups, limitations, applications, and future perspectives.

Abstract:Plasmonics, which allows for manipulation of light field beyond the fundamental diffraction limit, has recently attracted tremendous research efforts. The propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) confined on a metal-dielectric interface provide an ideal two-dimensional (2D) platform to develop subwavelength optical circuits for on-chip information processing and communication. The surface plasmon resonance of rationally designed metallic nanostructures, on the other hand, enables pronounced phase and polarization modulation for light beams travelling in three-dimensional (3D) free space. Flexible 2D and free-space propagating light manipulation can be achieved by encoding plasmonic nanostructures on a 2D surface, promising the design, fabrication and integration of the nextgeneration optical architectures with substantially reduced footprint. It is envisioned that the encoded plasmonic nanostructures can significantly expand available toolboxes for novel light manipulation. In this review, we presents the fundamentals, recent developments and future perspectives in this emerging field, aiming to open up new avenues to developing revolutionary photonic devices.

Abstract:We show that unique optical properties of metamaterials open unlimited prospects to "engineer" light itself For example, we demonstrate a novel way of complex light manipulation in few-mode optical fibers using metamaterials highlighting how unique properties of metamaterials, namely the ability to manipulate both electric and magnetic field components, open new degrees of freedom in engineering complex polarization states of light. We discuss several approaches to ultra-compact structured light generation, including a nanoscale beam converter based on an ultra-compact array of nano-waveguides with a circular graded distribution of channel diameters that coverts a conventional laser beam into a vortex with configurable orbital angular momentum and a novel, miniaturized astigmatic optical element based on a single biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial that enables the conversion of Hermite-Gaussian beams into vortex beams carrying an orbital angular momentum and vice versa. Such beam converters is likely to enable a new generation of on-chip or all-fiber structured light applications. We also present our initial theoretical studies predicting that vortex-based nonlinear optical processes, such as second harmonic generation or parametric amplification that rely on phase matching, will also be strongly modified in negative index materials. These studies may find applications for multidimensional information encoding, secure communications, and quantum cryptography as both spin and orbital angular momentum could be used to encode information; dispersion engineering for spontaneous parametric down-conversion; and on-chip optoelectronic signal processing.

Abstract:Organic and perovskite solar cells are suffering from the insufficient utilization of incident light and thus low light harvesting efficiency despite their rapid progress in the past decade. In this regard, light manipulation strategies have attracted numerous attention to solve this inherent limit. Herein, the recent advances in light manipulation techniques in this area are overviewed. The light manipulation mechanisms are illustrated to classify the structures. Various light manipulation structures, fabrication techniques, and corresponding results are given and discussed, addressing the suppression of surface reflection, nano/micro-structure-induced light scattering, and the plasmonic effects with periodic metallic patterns and metallic nanoparticles. A brief perspective on future research is also proposed for pursuing broadband light harvesting.

Abstract:Our focus is on the potential of enhancing light-matter interactions by using microstructures. It has been proven that microstructures of composite materials (MCMs) are versatile means for passive optical functional integration. Here we elaborate on some motivations and preliminary results. By using MCMs, we present a few examples of enhanced functional integration for optical networks and structures for light trapping at UV-VIS (e.g., solar cells). Simulations of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and polarization dependent devices for network terminals at 1310 nm and 1500 nm are presented. A simple principle was used to demonstrate total absorption of visible spectrum around 400-500 nm, which may benefit application such as solar cells.

Abstract:The strong confined electromagnetic field in the micronano photonic structures brings new opportunities for the research of interaction between light and matter. By designing optical modes, light can be controlled to realize reversible or inreversible energy exchange between photons and emitters at the micronano scale. Here, we review the basic principles of the interaction between light and matter in cavity quantum electrodynamics and their recent advances in strong coupling based on micronano photonic structures such as plasmon nanostructures, whispering gallery resonators and photonic crystals. These works opening the research of quantum nanophotonics will have great influence on the on-chip quantum devices and quantum informations.

Abstract:Optical force, coming from momentum exchange during light-matter interactions, has been widely utilized to manipulate microscopic objects, though mostly in vacuum or in liquids. By contrast, due to the light-induced thermal effect, photophoretic force provides an alternative and effective way to transport light-absorbing particles in ambient gases. However, in most cases these forces work independently. Here, by employing the synergy of optical force and photophoretic force, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a configuration which can drive a micron-size metallic plate moving back and forth on a tapered fiber with supercontinuum light in ambient air. Optical pulling and oscillation of the metallic plate are experimentally realized. The results might open exhilarating possibilities in applications of optical driving and energy conversion.

Abstract:Light–matter interaction is a key branch of photonics/optical material science. As the research emphasis in recent years has shifted from microscale toward nanoscale, light–matter interaction within extreme dimensions raises new challenges as well as opportunities. However, because of the classic diffraction limit of conventional optics, coupling and confinement of light into deep‐subwavelength volume is usually very challenging, resulting in difficulties in exploring the light–matter interaction within ultrathin and ultrasmall dimensions. Based on recent advances in theoretical modeling, nanomanufacturing and experimental validation efforts, unique features have been recognized. Here, recent key progresses of light–matter interaction within extreme dimensions are summarized and future directions based on new combinations of materials, structures, nanomanufacturing, and applications are discussed, ranging from quantum plasmonics, nonlinear optics, to optical biosensing.

Abstract:Light management is of paramount importance to improve the performance of optoelectronic devices including photodetectors, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes. Extensive studies have shown that the efficiency of these optoelectronic devices largely depends on the device structural design. In the case of solar cells, three-dimensional (3-D) nanostructures can remarkably improve device energy conversion efficiency via various light-trapping mechanisms, and a number of nanostructures were fabricated and exhibited tremendous potential for highly efficient photovoltaics. Meanwhile, these optical absorption enhancement schemes can benefit photodetectors by achieving higher quantum efficiency and photon extraction efficiency. On the other hand, low extraction efficiency of a photon from the emissive layer to outside often puts a constraint on the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of LEDs. In this regard, different designs of device configuration based on nanostructured materials such as nanoparticles and nanotextures were developed to improve the out-coupling efficiency of photons in LEDs under various frameworks such as waveguides, plasmonic theory, and so forth. In this Perspective, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress of research on various light management nanostructures and their potency to improve performance of optoelectronic devices including photodetectors, solar cells, and LEDs.

Abstract:Optical manipulation has emerged as a pivotal tool in soft matter research, offering superior applicability, spatiotemporal precision, and manipulation capabilities compared to conventional methods. Here, an overview of the optical mechanisms governing the interaction between light and soft matter materials during manipulation is provided. The distinct characteristics exhibited by various soft matter materials, including liquid crystals, polymers, colloids, amphiphiles, thin liquid films, and biological soft materials are highlighted, and elucidate their fundamental response characteristics to optical manipulation techniques. This knowledge serves as a foundation for designing effective strategies for soft matter manipulation. Moreover, the diverse range of applications and future prospects that arise from the synergistic collaboration between optical manipulation and soft matter materials in emerging fields are explored.

Building upon the fundamental progress of light trapping and confinement strategies, new applications of boosted light–matter interaction within extremely small dimensions received extensive research efforts, as reviewed by Yun Xu, Dengxin Ji, Qiaoqiang Gan and co-workers in article number 1800444. The cover image conceptually highlights representative designs of plasmonic metamaterial structures with extremely small features that are used to boost the light–matter interaction.

Abstract:Recent developments in the field of metamaterials have revealed unparalleled opportunities for “engineering” space for light propagation; opening a new paradigm in spin- and quantum-related phenomena in optical physics. Here we show that unique optical properties of metamaterials (MMs) open unlimited prospects to “engineer” light itself. We propose and demonstrate for the first time a novel way of complex light manipulation in few-mode optical fibers using optical MMs. Most importantly, these studies highlight how unique properties of MMs, namely the ability to manipulate both electric and magnetic field components of electromagnetic (EM) waves, open new degrees of freedom in engineering complex polarization states of light at will, while preserving its orbital angular momentum (OAM) state. These results lay the first steps in manipulating complex light in optical fibers, likely providing new opportunities for high capacity communication systems, quantum information and on-chip signal processing.
